Inconsistencies on Roshar's Technological Advancement?
StanLemon replied to orc's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So the thing about scientific progress is that it doesn't have to happen in the linear fashion that it did here in the real world. Different discoveries can happen at different rates. For example, Raboniel knew what axi were even though Navani had no concept of them other than a theoretical smallest division. While the way it was presented in the book did seem somewhat jarring to me, I wasn't really confused. Scholars on Roshar might simply have tested things out before in a different order than they did here on Earth. We can even use real world examples to explain this, for example the ancient Greeks effectively invented a computer and steam engine thousands of years ago. -
That chapter was one of my favorites. It humanized both her and Hoid and it was representation for something that isn't as common in media.
-
I think that's the point of his character now. And I think the lack of satisfaction is also intentional. It's a representation of how lowly he became, that he torments Kaladin because Kaladin is the only thorn in his lie he has been telling himself for the last year.

This is the part that I actually find the most interesting. What if that is how worlds and even just things get Invested with a Shard's Investiture? Tuning their Rhythms until they have the Shard's Rhythm as part of their pure tone.
-
I agree that Autonomy is the most likely one, it was mostly just an observation
-
He mentions that the body left behind was Rayse. This implies that Taravangian's body ascended with him. However he did mention that he was dead beforehand so maybe that will be a weakness that can be exploited
-
I agree. I also think Hoid is underestimating Kelsier. Kelsier now has access to full Feruchemy and is a Mistborn and he knows even more about Hemalurgy than TLR did. Add that with Kelsier's scheming mind, 300 years of experience, and access to scientific innovation and you get a very scary person.

I'm not surprised by the memory storage. After all, Vasher was able to use them to remove the child's memory in Warbreaker. Most likely it was via this method. Also from Vasher and Warbreaker, it's proven that a holder of Breaths can distinguish and chose which Breaths they use and as Hoid is old and practiced I'm sure he knows how to not use his memory Breaths. As to Awakening with Breaths that store memory, those are interesting questions. Something I especially found interesting is that Hoid seemingly even dumps the memories of what he's doing in the moment in the Breaths.

By that logic we would need to rename Stormlight and Voidlight.
-
So thinking about Anti-Light I realized something. Despite being the opposite of Odium's Investiture, Anti-Voildlight was able to pass through Raysium without issue. Assuming Raysium like other godmetals is just the Shard's Investiture in solid form then it when it encounters Anti-Voidlight it should be destroyed. This means that there is still a fundamental difference between the different states of Investiture as well from when they are solid, liquid, and gas.
-
The problem with this though is that when Taravangian ascends he describes it as fury and hate. I used to believe that Odium wasn't just Odium but this character perspective kind of makes that unlikely
-
Wasn't that the point though? Odium sucked all the nuance out of him. He was dead inside except his obsession with Kal.

I think this might be mysticism. Kelsier has made a religion around himself using subterfuge and getting people to believe divinity when there wasn't any. Perhaps as someone said it could be that he sends a Kandra using his bones and calls that his "avatar" as one possibility
-
I think if Passionlight would be Odium+Mercy(or Devotion possibly) as Odium seems to represent negative passions and the other as positive passions I think Harmony is more telling of the nature Investiture than Intents. As we now know, hybrid Investiture is the harmonizing of different rhythms.

So, with Sazed's epigraphs, we now have an interesting question. Who is his enemy? Back when BoM came out the assumption was that he was simply facing a Shard and that his limited understanding of the overall Cosmere kept him from understanding that. However, we now know that he has met other Shards by the time of BoM and was at the very least aware of Odium. This now makes the Discord theory seem much more likely though it is still possible that it could be a Shard obfuscating itself in some unknown way. What are all of your thoughts?

rhythm of war Cultivation Possibilities
StanLemon replied to albenraph's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Cultivation almost certainly has more to her plan as exampled by Lift's existence. However, I still lean into that she made a wrong gamble on Taravangian and it will end worse than she's hoping for. -
Questiture for Investiture!
StanLemon replied to silver-the-ridgerunner's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Based on Kelek's epigraphs, I'm convinced that the main reason they want a perfect receptacle is to transport Kel- 6 replies

It seems pretty apparent that Thaidakar is Kelsier This whole debate seems exactly like the ones arguing that Brandon wasn't going to bring the Cosmere to the forefront in this book. Well, he did. It's now more than just little tidbits. It's full on in the readers face that there is a Cosmere, that Investiture is the lifeblood of magic, that there are more gods, that there is more to everything. Brandon seems to be tying Cosmere threads together in this book and it would be narratively more odd for Thaidakar to not be Kelsier at this point

Cultivation would probably be the best for Sazed, it would be a perfect balance for the two he has. Also, a thought I had recently is Sazed is the closest the Cosmere has to the view of the Abrahamic God. Working in mysterious ways but allowing free will. I wonder if that might be part of Brandon's idea for Sazed.

This looks fun and woooooooo one million posts! I joined the Shard mostly by accident. I had some knowledge of the Cosmere and had found the Coppermind. From there I followed links and found my way to the Shard, I love internet forums for nerd stuff so it was a nice find It gives me a nice place to talk with others as I've always been the type to overanalyze the worlds in fiction. It has given me much to think about in the nature of the Cosmere too with the theories people have posted. Most importantly it has given a really nice community that a Sanderson fan can talk with others on. Thank you all Several, I just overall have enjoyed how this place has been. But my favorite moments are when I see an excited post because someone's guess or theory on something in the books turns out to have been correct. One million posts woot woot

Steel is the best metal, Change My Mind
StanLemon replied to Narcoleptic Axolotl's topic in Mistborn
When it comes to compounding I think gold is the best just because while gold is expensive you can basically stay in perfect health forever and survive any accidents or bad situations you run into. And as was pointed out, a few Goldminds here and there may very well be cheaper than all the medical expenses that build up. That said, I fully agree that steel compounding would be the most useful of them all. The mobility and speed even in every day life could prove fantastic- 27 replies

Like I said, there were problems with the idea. Just wanted to know what others thought of it. However, despite being stuck on Braize he clearly has direct influence on Roshar as is evident in Oathbringer As far as Scadrial or Kelsier goes, I wasn't even considering that. Though on that subject now, Odium is known for corrupting rather than creating, which is more in lines with what we've seen Trell do. Not that I think Odium is Trell

I've mentioned this a couple times in other threads, but the way that Kaladin recalls Moash's words seem to me a lot like the way Vin would "recall" Reen's words. Just the way the scene is framed is very reminiscent to me. There are issues with this of course, but I was wondering if anyone else had the same thoughts
-
I'm sure there will be an Adolin pov where we will see his internal thoughts. He's had months to get used to it so he's had some time to adjust at least. I hope we'll find out soon
