  1. Not necessarily, emotional alterations seem like a far more generic Investiture than Midnight Essence which is kind of pretty specific.
  2. Just a little something Hoid says from TotES to add to your theorizing
  3. This need not devolve into a vs debate. I think it's safe to say we've had enough of those lately. This can be a thread to explore the limits of a Bondsmith's power though.
  4. Oh I'm sure their is some kind of connection. At least one person has postulated the possibility that Re-Shephir is an unmade Aether
  5. Riina and the other Ire were very near Scadrial during Era 1 and Secret History proves that Hoid didn't spend the entirety of Era 1 on Scadrial as sometime just before or during WoA he was returning from somewhere
  6. One limit they have consistently been shown having is that they have no range. All uses of their Surges have required touching the target first, even Ishar had to touch to use his power. The only loophole we've seen is they can seemingly influence their power through their spren. Like Navani taking control of the Tower, and Kaladin while he was enveloped in the Stormfather's power
  7. I disagree, Midnight Essences are described as oily in appearance. The only time they are described as smoke like is when they are dissolving which is how all Aethers have been described when dissolving like how Roseite was described as evaporating into a pink smoke Midnight Essence is the name of the creatures produced, that doesn't necessarily equate to the Soulcasting Essences Or that there are more essences unknown to Roshar. Just like Silver has an interaction with Investiture even if it isn't Allomantically viable I indeed said Tallow, which is oils because Midnight Aether is on multiple occasions described as oil like
  8. He's also said the timeline is fluid until he sets it in stone. I bring this up solely because based on the knowledge we have, it's the most likely reason for their diminished state. Sure there could be other causes which we may learn in the Elantris sequel but we do have a likely reason right now
  9. Less a theory and more an observation. The Essences used for Soulcasting appear to have a relationship with the Aethers Zephyr Aether/Zephyr Essence Sunlight Aether/Spark Essence Verdant Aether/Pulp Essence Roseite Aether/Lucentia Essence Midnight Aether/Tallow Essence
  10. I'd also add that Autonomy seems to co-opt existing magic systems. Now TotES takes place lete enough in the Cosmere timeline that it's possible that stories of White Sand made it to Lumar and the similarities made people think it was an Aether. Or, it really is a different Aether that she took and planted on her own little planet
  11. After learning from TotES that Riina had 'recovered' from her decrepit state that she and the other Ire were in in Secret History, I think that Era 1 takes place some time during the 10 year period of the Reod. Brandon has alluded that the Reod affected offworld Elantrians even if not so severely as it did to Elantrians who were on Sel. Additionally the description of the Elantrians of the Ire in Secret History always sounded halfway between Reod and proper Elantrians to me.
  12. Based on the tech level, TotES likely takes place between era 3 and 4 of Mistborn. With working space travel shown, I agree it is likely the second latest chronologically with only SotD being later
  13. Moving something a few hundred miles at FTL or even near FTL would seem like teleportation
  14. This very quickly became one of my favorite books by Sanderson. Very well written and the Cosmere connections feel very naturally with Hoid's snark making the not subtle ones entertaining
  15. This has quickly become one of my favorite Sanderson books. I'd love to see this as a movie
  16. A number of types of Savantisms have some pretty strong downs
  17. Could you point me to a page where Dalinar does that without first having Stormlight? I don't recall anything specific enough for that. As for Navani well..
  18. He still presumably had Investiture to do that charging and overcharging in the first place. It's like Compounding, getting more than you gave, but you still need a little to start things off
  19. Not without using their Surges and they can't use their Surges without having some Stormlight to start off with. So no they don't. Unless you want to make the completely baseless claim that Bondsmiths can use their powers without Investiture Doesn't matter. If you want to make ludicrous conditions, so can I You still have to PREPARE to have those. Gather the Spheres knowing you might need them in the future, make sure you've had them infused. So prep. Just like a Mistborn needs to prepare their metals. A Feruchemist needs to prepare their metalminds. An Awakener gathering Breaths. And so on and so on. Saying that any Investiture that a magic user would be expected to have at any given time is invalid is disingenuous.
  20. Having any Investiture requires prep. Also they could have dead Plate...with no Stormlight to power it thus trapping them in an immovable armor. They don't need to be 4th Ideal. Your position that having filled metalminds is any more prep than any other magic user having Investiture which would be expected of them to have in most situations is ridiculous as not just me but multiple people have called out now.
  21. I mean, Sazed used up all his speed making a months long journey into a week long journey, sounds pretty impressive to me. I think Bleeder had a ton of speed because by Spiking Idashwy she gained access to all of her stores of speed and those probably had years worth of speed stored in them only used sporadically
  22. I'd probably contract out my services. That much power could do a lot and would pay well for the more expensive metals like gold.
  23. There are few circumstances that a Fullborn couldn't easily have full metalminds. You have to be intentionally weighing the fight to the Bondsmith's favor to assume a Fullborn doesn't have full metalminds. Which basically admits to the Bondsmith being at a disadvantage against a Fullborn. Speed might not be everything but it is enough. What's seen in SoS and BoM is enough to show that they are more than capable of moving too fast for any Radiant to react to. Your example with Lezian doesn't work for two reasons. First he wasn't instantaneously teleporting, he was turning into a trackable ribbon, and two, his every other movement was still at normal speeds. All movement is sped up for a Feruchemist. Additionally a Fullborn can hit quite litterally like a bullet train, no Plate is going to stand up to more than one hit that hard. Frankly, the only way a Bondsmith beats a Fullborn is if either the Fullborn has been handicapped or maybe via an ambush.
  24. Then your Bondsmith has no Stormlight, or time to even say more than a single oath. That's how ridiculous your assertion is. Prep time assumes that they are preparing for a specific enemy or situation. A Fullborn would have full metalminds on their person as a matter of standard procedure. Just like every other Feruchemist.
  25. No prep time still assumes a Fullborn has full metalminds on their person, assuming differently is utterly ridiculous.
