Fullborn V.S. 5th Ideal Windrunners
StanLemon replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This is directly contradicted by HoA where Sazed hits a Kandra hard enough to break its stone True Body. Until he retcons this in a book the book takes priority- 456 replies

Fullborn V.S. 5th Ideal Windrunners
StanLemon replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Your mistaken again. That WoB you did is about density and muscle. Brandon has repeatedly said that F-Iron increases mass. That is not up for debate. A Skimmer doesn't need to have an increase in strength to hit harder, the increase in mass does the job for them. More mass means more force. That is elementary physics. And we have seen it happen twice with Sazed. On of those examples can arguably applied to him tapping Pewter too, but the other can't. You are acting as if strength is the only way to increase force of blows which isn't the case. And yes, before you ask, physics does allow an increase of mass without increasing density. There are a whole slew of particle physics issues that have to be handwaved but you don't need to increase density to increase mass. Assuming that he was using 6 weeks as a normal travel time with 8 hours of sleep and and about an hour for eating each day. He would have still had to compress approximately 630 hours of travel time into approximately 144 hours even accounting for his lack of need to sleep. That's something like 4.5x faster average. If he truly was only using them occasionally he would have to have tapped A LOT each time for the average to balance out. Either way, whether he used them occasionally or the majority of the trip, it just isn't enough stores to follow the WoB example.- 456 replies

We should probably move this debate on Feruchemy compression to a new thread as 99% of the time it won't be a factor to a Fullborn. They'll have enough of any trait that they won't run out regardless- 456 replies

Sazed turning a 6 week journey into a 6 day journey. And he only stored every 5th day for 5 months, using your interpretation, he wouldn't have had enough. But we do see Sazed hit harder by tapping Iron twice. Iirc Wax never hits anyone while tapping Iron- 456 replies

Truly this, this is what makes F-Steelbthe single best combat power in the Cosmere. Makes them nigh untouchable in a fight and can hit several times in quick succession. A Fullborn is even worse because they will have far greater amounts of speed than any normal Feruchemist and will have A-Pewter, F-Pewter, and F-Iron to make each of their blows hit like a train. Imagine being hit by a car ten times in half a second- 456 replies

Two things. First, we have already gone over how that rate of decay can't possibly be as bad as Brandon's example, otherwise most of the displays we have seen in the books would be impossible. Secondly, Brandon clearly flubbed up his math on this. He's clearly using a compression of halving things, and basic mathematics dictate that compressing dictates a doubling for every halving of time. And he prefaced his example with 'in mathematical terms' so just because his flub happened doesn't mean the numbers he used should be taken as gospel on this, he was trying to get the point of Investiture loss across.- 456 replies

I could conceivably see a skilled martial hitting someone moving 2x speed. I could even believe a skilled Radiant with Stormlight reflexes and Shardplate having chances (bad chances but chances nonetheless) to hit someone going 4x speed, but a hitting Steel Feruchemist going even faster is down right unlikely. Add F-Zinc for high speed thought and A-Pewter for inhuman grace and dexterity and a Radiant would have to be ridiculously lucky to hit a Fullborn.- 456 replies

Relatively speaking it is. People's reaction times are only fractions of a second better. Considering how much only fractions of a second make a difference, imagine how having whole relative seconds better reaction speeds would give an advantage. Running speed doesn't matter too much in a fight, it's all the other speed boosts F-Steel give that makes it so dominating That's because cheetahs are only fast sprinters, and they have terrible stamina and aren'tany faster than other big cats in any other way. Back to running speed not being the thing that makes F-Steel so broken. Watch a video of someone swinging a sword at 1/5th speed. You would have to let yourself get hit by the sword if they are swinging that slow. That's what makes F-Steel so broken as you perceive the world moving slowly as well. You're the only person moving at normal speed in a world of slow motion- 456 replies

One compression doubles your speed. Two compressions doubles it again, making you 4x faster and the world from your perspective 4x slower. Third compression doubles it again to 8x. And that's assuming you are only storing 50% of your speed. So 1 hour of 50% storing leads to 7 and a half minutes of the world being at 1/8th speed before Investiture loss is taken into account. Most fights period don't last that long Edit: @alder24 to be fair, a martial weapon does have better reach, one of the reasons a spear is actually a better weapon than a sword generally.- 456 replies

You keep trying to dismiss how utterly broken speed is. Few if anyone agrees with you for pretty obvious reasons. I suggest you watch a sword fight video, then watch it at half speed, then at quarter speed, then at eighth speed. Eighth speed is only compressing speed three times and those sword duelists will be moving sluggishly- 456 replies

But there is little speed difference in real life fights, I wouldn't be concerned by someone with a sword moving at half speed or slower and I don't even have the that great of reflexes.- 456 replies

Iyatil likely has A-Pewter or F-Steel considering she was able to outrun Amaram, someone who is likely reasonably fit and has a longer stride. Conclusive? By no means, but likely

It might get better, but it seems unlikely to get to Gold Compounding levels. Maybe a 5th Ideal Radiant with Progression but not any others. I would guess Tension could increase durability if any Surge can. Oh have you not seen the Scadrial vs Roshar megathread from a couple years back? It was like thirty pages or something of back and forth- 456 replies

StanLemon replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It's definitely not on the level of Gold Compounding as there are plentiful examples of Radiants needing time to heal that Miles just never needs. Frankly this line seems to be a bit of an outlier compared to the rest of the series as there are no examples I can think of other than this that even imply that Radiants have enhanced durability and there are far more examples of the healing being not nigh instantaneous. Also the line is a little ambiguous, as the following paragraph mentions that Stormlight healed the sprain in moments. So it would be reasonable to interpret Kaladin as meaning he would be left with broken bones if not for the healing power of Stormlight- 456 replies

This is demonstratably wrong. In boxing as previously mentioned and martial arts matches, unless there is a decently large difference in weight and strength (something Compounding can more than make up for) the faster person almost always has the advantage. And that's two people who would only have a relatively small difference in speed. Even 2x faster would be well above even the difference between the fastest real life combatant and slowest.- 456 replies

I agree completely with this, Straff is Sanderson's most mustache twirling villain. Cowardly, unnecessarily cruel, power hungry, etc. He practically is the definition of evil

This gave me a terrible idea for a Shardblade, Hemalurgic Aluminum Shardblade...

Except it's also described as being only a little larger than a hand, so if it's over sized it isn't by much. Also you missed the point, that spearhead is made up of at least 16 other pieces of metal, so each metalmind is at best only 1/16th the size of the Bands. A small bracer would be more metal than that. And that's if there wasn't multiple metalminds for Tin, Bendalloy, or Nicrosil making each metalmind even smaller. Heck, assuming 5 layers for Tin and 2 for Bendalloy would would bring each metalmind to 1/21 of the Bands' total size. Likely no larger than a standard bracelet at most. And that's assuming all Nicrosil functions can be done with a single Nicrosilmind Edit: I realize bracelet might be ambiguous, I am specifically meaning a solid metal bracelet, not a small chained bracelet

There is a caveat to this though. The Bands are a fairly small metalmind overall, described as only slightly bigger than a hand. But they are made of at minimum 16 other pieces of metal which would make each individual metalmind relatively small. Also, it's hard to judge how full each trait in the Bands actually were, only that there was enough Investiture throughout the entire Bands for for Wax to see it with his Allomancy.

Also, most Feruchemical traits diffuse like a gas in the metal, so it likely doesn't take much of a trait to Invest all the metal meaning it takes very little of a trait to Invest into a Metalmind for Compounding purposes. The only real question is if the amount of Investiture in a metal influences how much you get out by Compounding or the speed at which the metal burns.

Because it's what would be expected for a Fullborn to have at any given time. There is no reason for them not to have their metalminds full unless they're an idiot or an exceptional circumstance where they had to start filling from scratch. Miles is an example of the ludicrous stores a Compounder can have- 456 replies

Dalinar is my favorite. He's a fantastic complicated character who's trying to be a better person than he used to be even when he wasn't aware of all his faults. His entire character arc is to be a better person and to help bring up other characters to be better than they are and I love it.
