  1. How do you know that he wanted to portray it as evil? I think what you're coming across is that you expected it to be evil, because that's the trope, and he subverted your expectations. So he didn't forget, he did it intentionally. We have a couple of WoBs about Shu-Dereth. They're pretty interesting, but they don't mention anything about it being evil: https://wob.coppermind.net/adv_search/?tags=shu-dereth
  2. I don't think we have this level of detail for any of the magic systems.
  3. @MistCLOAKed Mountains @Paragrin - you guys want to lock in a final guess, or should the Red Team take it's turn?
  4. And because if it's dangerous to produce venison, it'll sell for a lot more.
  5. Welcome to the Shard! This is a pretty good theory that you have (much better than I could do when I first joined), but there are a few things that are off. The Rosharan humans fled from Ashyn, a neighboring planet in the Rosharan system, not Scadrial. Odium came to Roshar at approximately the same time, which was long, long before the Stormlight books. As others have mentioned, Mistborn era 2 takes place during the second half of Stormlight. Have you checked out the Coppermind yet? It's basically the Cosmere version of Wikipedia. Here's a good overview of the history: https://coppermind.net/wiki/Cosmere (beware tons and tons of spoilers).
  6. Didn't Jasnah's Soulcasting work in the deleted scene? Didn't she Soulcast the ropes binding the sailors? Also, why would Adhesion have to do with Kaladin's flight - isn't that Gravitation?
  7. We haven't seen very many shared Surges, but the ones we have are pretty much identical. Adhesion - same between Dalinar and Kaladin Gravitation - same between Kaladin and Szeth Division - only seen Duskbringer (very little) Abrasion - only seen Edgedancer Progression - Regrowth is the same/similar between Lift and Renarin Illumination - only seen Lightweaver Transformation - same between Shallan and Jasnah Transportation/Cohesion/Tension - haven't seen Willshapers or Stonewards
  8. Have you tried looking in the Gallery? There are a lot of really talented artists here on the Shard. https://www.17thshard.com/forum/gallery/
  9. Brandon has repeatedly said we're not going to get answers about the Beyond. Also, Nazh is from Threnody.
  10. Yeah, it's not canonized, but that's how Brandon has it now:
  11. @Oltux72 Good idea. I imagine that Brandon's just going to completely revamp the whole thing due to how much he's stolen for his other books.
  12. An Accountability of Virtue and Dym @Babilarian Darkeyes
  13. We actually have very little idea what avatars are or how they're made. The only ones we know of are Patji and the new one on Obrodai. When Brandon's talked about whole pantheons being Bavadin (i.e. this WoB), he's used the phrase "personas" - which might be the same thing, but might not. The way Brandon's talked about avatars (which isn't often) leads me to believe that they're more than just a persona, they're distinct beings (to some as yet unrevealed extent). But they don't seem (to me) to be the kind of thing where you would have multiple avatars on the same planet, all being worshiped by some religion. They seem more like mini-Shards, or something similar.
  14. Right but the Vessel, Bavadin, is technically female. I think that's what they were referring to. Right, I understand that. I just thought that nitpicking new members about something that Brandon explicitly said not to get hung up on was uncalled for. Brandon himself even uses masculine pronouns sometimes.
  15. Well, he wrote the letter to someone. It wasn't Bavadin, and it wasn't Patji. The only other avatar we know of is the new one on Obrodai, so that should be the default choice (i.e. Occam's Razor). The first 90% of the letter is talking about an avatar and a planet. It would be pretty weird for it to change tracks completely and talk about a different avatar/planet. Plus, a new avatar would explain both the inability to respond to Hoid and Patji's surprise that Hoid was able to located the "insignificant" world.
  16. Welcome to the Shard! You know, I read Warbreaker almost two years ago, and spend much more time than I should on these forums - and I never made the connection between the names. Good catch! The Coppermind (the Cosmere Wiki) is a great resource for these kinds of questions. Much faster than searching the forums directly. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Clod P.s. FYI, double posting is against the site rules. You can "edit" your post to add additional thoughts.
  17. Just from curiosity, can I ask where you found this? I can't find anything. Obrodai is mentioned in the letter (the chapter 50 epigraph). Brandon confirmed that it's a Shardworld in a WoB during the Oathbringer tour. The avatar can't be Bavadin, because it's a new avatar that he tried to contact. The easiest place to find these kind of things is the Coppermind (basically the Cosmere Wikipedia): https://coppermind.net/wiki/Obrodai Ch 50 Epigraph: Newcastle WoB:
  18. The new avatar that Hoid tried to speak to is not Patji (who is the letter writer), and not Bavadin. It is a new avatar that is located on a Shardworld called Obrodai. It's also almost certainly *not* First of the Sun, as Patji refers to it as "that world," and asks that Hoid "seek these waters in person" (referring to coming to First of the Sun and talking to Patji himself). It's certainly possible that Obrodai is a different planet in the Drominad system.
  19. Yes, if you only alloy in a little bit of other stuff, it may still retain some of the properties. However, the original question was clearly not asking about a sprinkling of other metals - they wanted to know whether silver combined with aluminum would retain both properties.
  20. @Doomstick - this is a tricky one. I believe the only actual Brightlord is Lamaril. Then there are a few darkeyes who have interactions with Brightlords (Dym, Makh, Natir). There's also a nobleman from Sel: Edan. What do you think?
  21. I was talking about Bavadin herself not the shard's many avatars. Avatars are not mentioned in the WoB at all. He refers to "personas."
  22. It's been a really long time since I read Sixth of the Dusk, but I don't remember this being the case. The Coppermind also doesn't mention anything about this.
  23. Alloys are considered completely different metals. Many of the 16 Metallic Arts metals are alloys of others. For example, brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, both of which have different Allomantic properties. An aluminum alloy would be treated as a different metal. Same with a silver alloy. Caveat: alloys with only minor additions may work similarly to the base metal.
  24. Her, Bradvin is a woman. Other then that I mostly agree although Autonomy is perfectly willing to interfere with others she just can't stand being interfered with It's a little bit more complicated than that. To quote Brandon: "try not to get too hung up on gender, race, or even human appearance where Bavadin is concerned" I think that's hilarious. I've been meaning to ask a similar question for a few days now, I am glad someone else did and you replied. Bavadin is now instantly super interesting to me! Brandon Sanderson Bavadin is awesome. One regret of finally moving on from White Sand (and doing the graphic novel, instead of doing an entire trilogy myself) is because I won't get to show her off as a character for a while. It should still happen, mind you, but I have enough on my plate right now that I just can't do it all. Argent Eh, it's alright. The more we wait to see her, the more practice writing you will have when you do write her, and the more awesome she will be to us Are we going to see her in White Sand first though, or elsewhere? I've also been talking with a couple of friends about Ambition, who happens to be a Shard I love unconditionally just because of his?her? mandate. So I should ask - how tight-lipped do you intend to be with information about it? Can we prod for a little bit of trivia, or is it too early for that? Brandon Sanderson I'm going to be pretty tight-lipped for now. Let's at least let White Sand finish first--you will find her in there, though her touch on the story (directly) is light. She prefers to allow her personas to become the focus of attention. General Reddit 2016 (Nov. 28, 2016)
