[OB] Shallan is not very creative with names
Zelly replied to Llarimar's topic in Stormlight Archive
Franz Marc is my hero for naming paintings. His painting of a yellow cow? It's title: Yellow Cow. Painting of a blue horse? Title: Blue Horse. Makes me so happy. I've taken a lot of art history courses that required memorization of a artwork's date, artist, and title. Sometimes simple is good. Also, a major turn off for me in the fantasy genre is when too many things are named too unusual. End up with a book that reads like, "S'polyc'ay reached out with his rewata powers, touching the umuth with his mind. The shield was laced with layers of po'quil, which he peeled back gently like the leaves of a bawapni plants." Bleh. -
Just wondering how many of you guys are mormon
Zelly replied to Adolin Kholin's topic in General Discussion
So why is the percentage so unusually high on the Shard? I know Brandon attended and teaches at BYU, so I assume there's a connection there. Is he Mormon himself? Is he...like a Mormon celebrity? -
Stop that. I'm doing a major clean/purge in my house, getting rid of a lot of unnecessary stuff. Most interesting so far is a cache of old purses, some from proms and weddings at least 10 years old, the type of things you only use once because they match a dress you only wore once. Instead one purse was nothing but a purple and gold origami swan. I have no memories of this swan, nor do I know how to make them. It is delightful. Another purse had a matching necklace/earrings set which I don't think I've ever seen before in my life. Trashing the purse, keeping the jewelry.

What if You Were the Only Person on Earth for 24 Hours?
Zelly replied to Draginon's topic in General Discussion
If it was impossible for me to get injured, I'd do a lot of crazy stuff like skydive without a parachute. I....think I'd be really bad at looting. Even if it wasn't hurting anyone, I'd have serious guilt gnawing at me every time I used whatever I had taken. Probably end up trying to return it somehow. Stupid guilt. I'd travel. Free airfare, no tourist lines? Oh yeah. Explore off limit places, see what secrets they held. Probably run around my street naked, just cause I could? -
I needed some fantasy heist books in my life, so splurged and bought: 1) The Hover Alley Crew by Marshall Ryan Maresca 2) The Thousand Deaths of Ardor Benn by Tyler Whitesides ^This is thehe one I'm currently reading, about half way through. The heists/conning people/loveable rogue bits are fun, but then it kinda gets bogged down by too heavy "hey the world is in peril" stuff and an overly complicated plan to save it. The magic system is interesting and reminds me a bit of Mistborn Era 2 (think magic bullets). Characters are...eh...standard bordering on cliche. 3) The Traitor God by Cameron Johnston 4) Steal the Sky by Megan O'Keefe

The shards all have some level of foresight. They've been peeping and planning for millennia. And there are all those prophecies about the Hero of Ages with the power to save or destroy, so someone sorta kinda knew what was coming... Why then, did neither Ruin nor Preservation seem to expect/predict the loss and then merging of their shards? Shards can be surprised, but I mean.....that's a pretty big oversight.

Starting to write a long post, then realized: This thread is almost two years old. Which means that Stormgate should actually be coming back in a few months. So I shall save my responses for his return.

Yeah, but Herdazian level normalcy. Personally I'm much more interested in the Hog than I am the general. I love these little tie ins and wrap arounds that Brandon does.

I don't know why, just.....just roll with me, okay. Preservation Puffs: Consists of small brownish white spheres. They are all oddly, noticeably identical. While appearing slightly fuzzy, they are rock hard and will break will your teeth if you attempt to eat them. Once milk is poured on them, they slightly congeal and then harden to resist movement. Ruin Flakes : Rugged reddish brown flakes. Slightly caustic, may eat away about some bowl materials. When milk is added, they dissolve into nothing. May cause milk to become severely caustic. Not to be used in Styrofoam containers. Honor Honey: Plain tan rings with a hint of honey. They taste okay, slightly sour somehow, but somehow give you a strong feeling of personal satisfaction. Cultivation Crisps: A variety of thin cut shapes in a variety of colors. Pouring milk on them changes the shape and color. Eating may cause unexpected side effects, both positive and negative, or possibly none at all. Great for slumber parties. Odium Ohs!: Dark golden circles with whiteish crystals imbedded. Sugar? Salt? You're not sure, even after eating them. Tastes pretty good, but also makes you feel very nauseated. Domi Devo Drops: Alphabet letter shaped. They taste great. They are very difficult to share with others. Pouring milk on them causes a violent chemical reaction. Harmony Hexagons: 6 sided and symmetrical. They are coated with a layer similar to that of yogurt covered raisins, colored gray with occasional lighter or darker streaks. Impossible to bite in half, each piece must be consumed as a whole. Adding milk colors the milk a light gray and creates a slight film on the surface. Go on, lemme see your ideas.

I did the same thing via Amazon! I think the Kindle version was on sale for like $4.99 and I was like, "meh might as well, I like fantasy". Then I didn't sleep for a week. Welcome!

Was this the same shop that had the painting from the Court of the Gods? Cause that makes an extra connection to Nalthis.

Brandon talks about some types of "immortals" here: Would Bloodmaker Ferrings exist in this category as well? If not, what about someone compounding Gold? Brandon Sanderson Yes, you are correct. Shagomir As a Bloodmaker ages what keeps them from healing the damage and carrying on as a very old, but very healthy person? Do they come to a point where they can't store enough health to stave off the aches, pains, diseases, and other things that come with old age? This makes sense for traditional Feruchemy as it is end-neutral, so storing health becomes a zero sum game - eventually, you're going to get sick and you're not going to be able to overcome it with your natural healing ability no matter how much you manipulate it with a goldmind. ...Unless you've got a supply of Identity-less goldminds lying around. Would a Bloodmaker with a sufficient source of identity-less goldminds (or the ability to compound, thus bypassing the end-neutral part of Feruchemy) eventually just die from being too old? Brandon Sanderson Basically, yes. They can heal their body to match their spiritual ideal, but some things (like some genetic diseases, and age-related illnesses) are seen as part of the ideal. Depends on several factors. source Also have a link to my favorite cosmere overarching timeline link, with lots of potential spoilers.

Characters who should join the MCU
Zelly replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Hela was, in my personal opinion, absolutely spectacular (same for Cate Blanchett). Are there any plans to merge Avengers and X-Men? Or is X-men too time jumpy, "I don't even know what's cannon anymore?" I don't know Marvel nearly as well as I do DC. -
Added Job Sim, To the Top, and Superhot to my wishlist. So many games to play, so little time and/or money T^T I'm loving Windows Mixed Reality, the only downside is that about 1/3 of the VR games are only for Oculus or Vive. So no Sarirento ninjas or Hx3 for me. And while I don't get motion sickness, I do get a headache after awhile, especially in Beat Saber. I think it's a mixture of not blinking enough while staring intently into a light screen.

So my computer went boom splat sizzle. I decided to splurge and got myself a fancy $$$ computer and Samsung Odyssey headset w/ remotes. I spent some time in Skyrim VR, which is very pretty, but also kind of tedious to actually play. I've spent the last few days rummaging through free stuff like Valve's "The Lab", which was surprisingly entertaining. Today I got Beat Saber, which is also a lot of fun (currently trying to mess around with custom songs because default list is meh-worthy). Anyone else play VR? What platform? What games do you recommend? Edit: Also I've discovered that apparently nothing makes me motion sick, as I decided to jump off a building in VR while standing on a balance board IRL.

I wonder if there's a family connection... Like how the Kholin family seems to have an unusually large number of Radiants. (Has Brandon commented on that yet?) I could see Hesnia as an Edgedancer, personally.

Before reading OB, he was my pick for champion. Based on nothing more than the fact that he rage triggered (the wording in WoR is pretty strong) on Sadeas, I wondered if Odium hadn't influenced him somehow, like if that moment of rage cracked him a bit to let Odium in.

[OB] Poll: How do you pronounce Stormlight names?
Zelly replied to Llarimar's topic in Stormlight Archive
I also do the Jazz-nuh, like in Jasmine. -
I'll throw in another gem-order connection I just remembered: the sapphire studded knife used to kill Jezrien. Perhaps the gems are simply symbolic to the Knights, but something deeper to the Heralds?
-
Hello and welcome! You should be fire.
-
Well there is this: Recording gems which also just happen to correspond to the correct orders. Granted, much of this could be simply ceremonial or symbolic. But it's another odd tie in. Why go the the trouble of having each order record into a specific stone type?
