Poll: Favorite main character besides Kaladin
alder24 replied to Stitof's topic in Stormlight Archive
Hard to choose between Shallan and Adolin, but Adolin would be the best friend you could have. Shallan is just fun to spend time with. -
Mistborn, Feruchemist, Awakener, Surgebinder or Elantrian?
alder24 replied to Ati16's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Awakener! I don't care that his weaker in power than Mistborn or Surgebinder. He can do so many cool things and only imagination is stopping him. It's the most versatile system on par with Elantrians. -
Seems like everybody can burn proper alloy of Lerasium to become misting And here is how you gain tie to Honor/Cultivation and ability to start burning Shardblades - alloying it with Lerasium

Shadesmar is Roshar's CR, it is part of Roshar, so as long as agreement forces Odium out of Roshar, he will be out of Shadesmar as well. But you miss the point in RoW - Odium can be out, but his Fused and Everstorm will remain on Roshar, he can't take them away anymore. Fused can simply occupy Shadesmar without Odium's order.

Ruin + Preservation = Eventual Declination into Complete Ruin.
alder24 replied to Heretic333's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Harmony is two shards for now, and no matter what they are, one shard can't destroy the other while being held by one vessel. Harmony can be splintered back to Ruin and Preservation, but Ruin can't destroy Preservation while held by Harmony/Discord together. Harmony is becoming Discord not because Preservation is decaying away, but because there was always slightly more Ruin than Preservation. It will never end up with pure Ruin, as long as those two are together, there will always be Preservation. Cultivation is about growth/change, not necessarily good, it can be bad as well. Cultivation is better opposition to Preservation than Ruin in my opinion. Both Cultivation and Ruin are about change, and would be better match together than with Preservation. Ruin again is not necessarily pure negative thing - sometimes you need to destroy old house to build new and better one. So with right combination, Ruin can be positive. -
Just because he's pov of back 5 books, deosn't mean he's alive - there was a WoB about it. We don't know if he gets to be ok, or that would be just flashbacks. The forces that fight illusions? Very effective. And amaram forces were infused with sprens of Odium. Thrill flares aggressiveness and will to fight, not mind control anyone. And Thrill is mindless, it doens't matter for him whom you fight as long as you fight. That Koloss army would be even more dangerous to Roshar if controled by Thrill. But Thrill is on the bottom of the ocean, so he's not coming back. Some basics of germ theory were developed as early as 16th. Starting date of industrial revolution is debatable among historians, but it really kicked in around 1820. For now fabrials are still mostly limited to rich and wealthy, and provide only simple tools like heating, lifting - no mass production with usage of fabrials, no motors, no machinery. That's not industrial revolution. That is a stepping point to it, but they are still behind. Even spanreeds are still limited to mostly nobels. There is nothing stopping Roshar for developing printing press for glyphs or women's writing. MeLaan was asked by Wax how's Marasi, she answer very technical, and no one was confused about it - they understand that. This suggest medical knowledge on Scadrial is advanced, comparable to Roshar's, on par with early 20th Earth. Again, its hard to tell, as we got a lot of technical terms from surgeon's pov in SA, and not even a doctor's visit in Mistborn. I didn't try to be dismissive about fabrials. I wanted only to point out how limited in application and usage they are for now. They are mostly in hands of Navani and rich people. Fabrials will be a powerhouse, and will cause industial revolution, but they are not there yet. Close, but not there. Newspapers are primary source of invormation for everyone, everywhere. Most if not all can read. Writing hard to tell, but schools are even at Roughs, university is accessible even for people from Roughs, so I would say it's still common. I told it's not perfect in Basin. People outside of Elendel can still vote for their mayors, na those mayors can represent them in Elendel, which is not effective. But there are talks and voices calling for change, like Wax and Marasi. They even have non bloody "revolution" when worksers overthrown unpopular governor in SoS. Can anyone on Roshar do the same? Yes, universal suffrage that's the word. Presumption of innocence. Right for fair court case. Right for the court representation/attorneys - Those alone would solve all problems that Kaladin and Moash faced. Wouldn't be nice if Tien wasn't send to war for some puny revange? There are working rigths being implemented by Wax. Maybe right for free education (no idea if it is in Elendel tbf, but there are schools even in Roughs). Right for freedom of believe (just look how Jasnah and Dalinar are treated, maybe they are not punished by law, but they are still having troubles with this). Constitution. Criminal code. There is a lot that can be offered. Cars are quite common, cheep enough that cab companies switched easily to cars, more than that even common people use it - Wax crushed few of them. Trucks are used on mass. Train tracks were place in a multiple warehouses Set used during Era 2. Most recent one is in Blimming again. But even in AoL, the one where Miles was caught, I think there were train tracks there as well. Gasoline can be manufacture from plants (Scadrial is doing that). Rails can be placed in a ditch, with sufficient draining, or storm barriers. Cream would be a problem for sure. More than 300 years, they have it during Final Empire. Roshar can soulcast it, but tell that to the people in remote village, who never seen Soulcaster. Or people stuck in Kholinar siege, where most were starving even when there was a soulcaster making food for them. There are limits of what soulcasters can do. Canned food has no limits and can last for years, while soulcasted food for days/weeks. Just connect? Intent doesn't matter here? I would say intent is important. So discovering it by accident is unlikely. I would say Roshar has no knowledge of Hemalurgy, mainly because most Scadrial don't have that (just because they heard of it or read about it in books left by Sezed doesn't provide them knowledge how it works as Sazed suppressed it). Knowledge about Allomancy and Feruchemy is common on Scadrial, similarly Surgebinding is geting more common knowledge on Roshar. And we're back to playing ping-pong with responses again.

I would not put them that tale. 18/19? Too late. They lack of industrial revolution(1760) or even printing press(1450). It's hard to compare medical, as in Mistborn we follow a guy who can heal himself, but judging form MeLaan description of Marasi's wound, (BoM when they fly to the temple) which was very technical, and no one asked any questions or was surprised by that description, Scadrial is also on very advanced stage. At least comparable to Roshar. That was likely the only medical description we got in BoM. Yes they have few fancy tools and advance theories. They do not follow Earth development, as Roshar is vastly different than Earth, and with Stormlight and gems they can make these more advanced tools. But still the glaring lack of early machinery like printing press, manufacturing, early industry or mass production, makes me think that they are a bit earlier, 15-17th century at best. Most people on Roshar are uneducated poor/working class, like medieval peasants but better and with more rights. Far from slaves tho, but there still are slaves. East is kind of feudalish with high gender inequality. Half of Roshar can't write. And Thaylenah as elective monarchy - only naval officers and merchant councils can vote. It's merchant republic, very common in middle ages (Venice). Azir is even worst, just few viziers vote for emperor. So while on Scadrial people complain about representation, all can vote and live in democracy (not perfect), and it still much, much better than anything on Roshar where 99.9% can't do anything to influence their government, and even Reshi isles have kings. Only Shins don't have monarchy. Scadrial would bring to Roshar revolutionary ideas of equality, democracy, and give more rights for commoners than there are on Roshar. (no guillotine this time) No mass transit? Taxis everywhere! Huge railway industry, cheep enough to rival extensive canal networks and send trains straight to factories and warehouses. It has to be cheep, for people as well. Bilming has cheep public overground railway. New Seran has gondolas. And cars are in every city now. That's no mass transit for you? Scadrial can mass produced canned food. This is a lot to offer. And I would not call it Industrial revolution. Heating fabrial is not industry nor spanreeds. Electricity means engine, and that means true Industrial revolution. Roshar is not there yet. He could, if he knew that is possible. Simmilar to how Scadrial has to know about Honorblades, Dalinar has to know about Hemalurgy and how to fight it to control them. He won't have that knowledge. No one on Roshar ever heard of Hemalurgy (outside of Mraize and Hoid). But still, I agree that Scadrial is in much worse position for invasion of Roshar than Roshar for invasion of Scadrial. They can't do it at all, not to mention succeed. They would fail in CR harassed from dozens of Oathgates by Rosharian troops, targeting supply chains and logistics. Highstorms are also a big obstacle. Scadrial can't invade Roshar.

Mistborn V.S. 3rd Ideal Lightweaver

What? What are the shield sizes in your opinion? Round shields seem to have varied in size from around 45 - 120cm (18" - 48") in diameter but the smaller and more manageable 75 - 90cm (30" - 36") is by far the most common. A typical kite (triangular shape) shield was at least 90-150cm (3-5 feet) high The heater shield (triangular shape) is usually approx. 50-90 cm high (depending on period, later it became shorter), and 60cm wide. Most shields are as wide as a person, often less than that. So which one of those shields would only needed to be 1.5 times bigger to fill whole corridor? Every one of them needs to be several times bigger. -
Did anyone else think it weird that Nightblood is a "He"?
alder24 replied to Wuestenfuchs's topic in Cosmere Discussion
He's "he" because Vasher started calling him that. -
Wayne is easy. His main advantage is bendalloy, so to nullify it make Anti-Wayne natural A-cadmium. Her bubbles will cancel out Wayne's bubble and exposed him to regular Set member's gunfire. To gain advantage over Wayne, F-steel, during hand fight she will be always faster, and at a distance, she will keep up with him. F-gold and A-chromium for a finishing blow. And I think that will be enough, only 4 powers, 5th can be pewter (A or F) just to gain even bigger advantage at hand combat. Wax is hard, and I have no idea. It's aerial and ranged combat. It's more about a skill than sets of power, and there is no one better at it than Wax. Natural A-steel and gained A-iron is a must. Maybe F-Iron to give him the same anchoring as Wax have, and A-Duralumin to gain advantage on it. Maybe F-gold to counter Wax's skill. Anti-Wayne - natural A-cadmium, F-steel, F-gold, A-chromium, A-pewter. Anti-Wax - Natural A-steel, A-iron, F-Iron, A-Duralumin, F-gold. I don't have idea for Anti-Wax, crushing him under rocks is the best way to kill him (the only one that almost worked).

Mistborn V.S. 3rd Ideal Lightweaver
alder24 replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Soulcasting is mass-preserving if you still can't agree. Even if that's the case, duralumin push can do it. Run out of steel? That's gonna take a lot of time. Lightweaver will lose all Stormlight sooner. And Mistborn simply can aim coins for the bottom of the shield, imbalancing and exposing Lightweaver head. Shields are being held on singular pivot point. Or push coins below/above the shield and behind Lightweaver to endlessly push and pull it through his body. For whom? Kaladin? Because Sigzil almost died in first battle of RoW. Some died fighting them. Not to mention how the Tower fell. Fused are a threat, just because Kaladin and Jasnah can deal with them, it doesn't mean that they are not a threat. -
Balat's axehound weighs as much as he does, but she is not the biggest (still big), as the biggest axehounds come up to a man's waist. Whitespines are as large as horses. Chasmfiends - at least twenty feet wide, six times the height of an adult man at their peak, and over twice as long. But they are forming bond with mandras, that reduces their weight. Skyeels also has this bond, as they should be heavier. And you have also chulls and island greatshells. No numbers for weight, so best you can do is approximate from their size. That's all I've got from Coppermind and WoBs. Roshar is high-oxygen, lower-gravity world, so animals can grow bigger but not necessarily much heavier.

Mistborn V.S. 3rd Ideal Lightweaver
alder24 replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It would be harder for Jasnah. And we've never seen Jasnah soulcasting Fused, even in OB when 3 realms were almost one with unlimited Stormlight. And the WoB clearly says: Both Mistborn and Radient do have connections in SR (to the Shards, powers, invstiture etc) that make soulcasting them very hard for Jasnah. It would be almost impossible for average Lightweaver to soulcast Mistborn, especially when they are worst at soulcasting at a distance than Elsecallers. "It is not impossible that you could imagine a Lightweaver being able to do it." - the way this is worded suggests it's not the norm for average Lightweaver to soulcast at a distance. -
Mistborn V.S. 3rd Ideal Lightweaver
alder24 replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes, I guess it's because aluminum hat is covering brain all around, shardshield is not. Here is another way to win in your scenario - Mistborn just shoots the coin into shield and steel push it normaly, both of them are flung in opposite directions, and if Lightweaver did not think of soulcasting a wall behind him, he will be ejected from his trap and Mistborn will be free, if he did, he will be smashed into that wall. Mistborn has pewter, so he easily withstand being pushed against the wall, Lightweaver will suffer discomfort, and be unable to move. He will have to drop the shield and let the coin pass through him, and if he does that, Mistborn now can endlessly push and pull coin through Lightweaver body, draining him out of Stormlight, and killing him. Mistborn can do it with one coin, 10, 20, or whatever gives him better anchor. When Lightweaver drops his shield, Mistrorn push on his emotions with duralumin and steel pushes himself toward Lightweaver, killing him while his paralyzed. You really underestimate Mistborn. Just because he can't heal and glow in the dark, it doesn't mean he's not fearful opponent for Radiant. Not to mention all of the metal that Lightweaver will have on his body will help Mistron strike lethal Spren forming a scutum or pavise, even if little bigger than normal is ok, and would be enough in this scenario, but as a big wall? That's a little stretchy, but might be possible. Lightweaver can't soulcast Mistborn, he's too invested. Tbf, it's quite easy to react to electrum shadows freezing - even if you don't know what could it be, it's the most logical to avoid those places where shadows are freezing. Especially when you are in the middle of movement, and know you can't lose all the momentum you already have just like that. -
Warbreaker/Elantris Edgedancer (part of Arcanum Unbounded) Dawnshard The Secret History (part of Arcanum Unbounded) The Emperor's Soul (part of Arcanum Unbounded) the rest of the novellas in Arcanum Unbounded White Sand (graphic novel) Both Warbreaker and Elantris could be read first, as they are quite important to the Cosmere. And also they are the biggest books remaining. The later three are short (100 page long) novellas, and are happening between Stormlight Archive books (Edgedancer and Dawnshard), and Mistborn (The Secret History), so they are nice little follow-ups for the books you've already read. The Emperor's Soul is also around 100 page long novella.

Why not? It's not covering his entire body. His head is exposed from above, back from behind. Rocks are not aluminum. -

Duralumin emotional allomancy, Lightweaver drops the shield, mistborn leeches, Lightweaver is dead. -
Mistborn V.S. 3rd Ideal Lightweaver
alder24 replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
This is a thoughtful analize with reasonable set of rules. I would give them both more Stormlight and metals with electrum, and specify what is considered by long range. There are lot's of scenarios that can be made, Mistborn can use emotional allomancy to make Lightweaver fearful and cowardly, or overly aggressive to manipulate him as he wants. He can use duralumin with emotional allomancy to paralyzed him just before closing distance and leeching. There is just too much moves to consider, and all can be countered, but listing all the moves is just pointless tug of war. Mistborn will be better in close quarters combat - he can easily outmaneuver Shardblade with pewter, and grab both of Lightweaver's hands while leeching. Shardblade gives you range advantage, but once he dodges it and comes closer, Lightweaver wouldn't have time to react, even by changing its shape. I only think that bronze won't be able to detect illusions because secretsprens weren't able to do it in OB. -
Mistborn V.S. 3rd Ideal Lightweaver
alder24 replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Yes, that was the point. My statement was pointless and illogical, like yours about future laserbeams. That is not a personal attack. You want to pitch ancient Lightweaver, with Jasnah, 4th ideal Elsecaller, standing next to perpendicularity in OB skill level, against modern Mistborn who "didn't train with electrum" because "he is person first". And when I proposed to equalize the fighting field and placed ancient Mistborn with Atium, against ancient Lightweaver, you jump straight into future lasers. That jump was pointless. That was not an argument in any way. -
Mistborn V.S. 3rd Ideal Lightweaver
alder24 replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I have no idea how logically you could connected it with Rashek was bad with hemalurgy... And that's the point. Soulcasting is hard to do. That's why modern Lightweavers struggle with it. We have nothing to suggest that ancient Lightweavers didn't have problems with it as well. Things that you are saying will be very hard or too hard to do for an average 3rd Ideal Lightweaver. Why not use future Mistborn with full feruchemist medalion and leeching cubes that can FTL to Lightweaver before fight even begins? Your arguments are just pointless. -
Mistborn V.S. 3rd Ideal Lightweaver
alder24 replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So why not using ancient Mistborn who all had Atium? Insta win Yes, Soulcasting is hard to master. Very hard. It takes a lot of time and training. Soulcasting air is even harded. That's my point, modern lightweavers are very bad at Soulcasting. They are the only data we have. -
Mistborn V.S. 3rd Ideal Lightweaver
alder24 replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The statement you made is hypocritical. "Modern mistborn are weak, as they are not assassins" but "let's ignore modern lightweavers cause they can't do fighting, and talk only about ancient lightweavers, about which we know nothing". I can came up with a dozens of reasons why modern mistborn would be trained in fighting the same way as ancient one. No one knows what ancient Lightweavers could do, but we know what modern Lightweavers can do, that Lightweavers are worse in Soulcasting that Elsecallers, that Jasnah is 4th Ideal and far better in Soulcasting than anyone else. And if Lightweavers don't want to fight, are born with disabilities, decide they want to be scientists, or engineers instead of soldiers etc? -
Mistborn V.S. 3rd Ideal Lightweaver
alder24 replied to Wits instant noodles's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Lightweavers in modern times will be illusionist first, soulcasters second, because there is sufficient workforce, production and tech, so they don't have the need for soulcasting anymore... Great argumentation, 10/10. -
Maybe there are soulcasters that can make only very specific material, like bronze, and those which can make all of one of the ten essences like all metals which are much rarer? I'm pretty sure, that in WoK Shallan thought that soulcasters that can make everything exist and not only Jasnah has one, but they are extremely rare. There are soulcasters that can soulcast material into three different ones. But yeah, technically steel is not a metal, so only iron.
-
They can make any mine with huge cave on the bottom of it, to hold the water, or by finding underground river, to which water will flow. They can prevent highstorm water from enetering a mine, by placing the entrance on the eastern wall, not on the ground, and on the higher ground, or by sealing it before highstorms. They can soulcast a strombunker on top of the entrance to a mine. It's not like their houses and basements are being flooded every highstorms. Roshar has iron mining (the WoK chapter in Shinovar, soulcasted iron is there heavily valued), and soulcasters wouldn't be able to meet the needs of the entire Roshar, and there is very few of them. Soulcasted sword out of wood will never be as good as forged one. It's not just about shape, it's about using proper type of steel and proper hardening and thermal processing to give desired properties to a sword. One of the ten essences is metal and one of the soulcaster from Aimia was for metal so, if it's for making any metal than steel can be made as well (plutonium too )
