Cosmere reread order and questions after the reread
alder24 replied to The flying spider's question in Cosmere Q&A
Hope you're safe. What kind of proof do you expect him to have? He wasn't a real Ardent, he was just playing his role as one. He used knowledge that other Ardents possessed because he didn't want to sound suspicious to Jasnah, who knows more than others and would quickly figure out that this guy knows more than he should have. He wasn't there to convince Shallan or Jasnah, but to get closer to Jasnah and kill her. Also Almighty as presented by Vorin religion isn't the most accurate representation of the Shard of Honor. As you know by finishing WoK, Honor is dead and that's not something that Kabsal should ever say to anybody, and it's in direct contradiction to Vorinism. Trying to say anything related to Shards would immediately alarm Jasnah as she is aware about them to some degree. Also we don't really know where he came from, what he knew - he might not be aware of Shards yet, and simply didn't know the true nature of Honor. -
That's not really a problem when it comes to abilities. Marsh has 20 something spikes and he is fine - his appearance is a little different, but his personality is still more or less the same. Spikes always change you, they always twist and shape your body to fit new spikes. This is most known with Inquisitors - their brain is changed to go around spikes, their heart is shifted etc - but if Marsh is fine, then you will be fine too, the changes are out of necessity, rather than some unwanted mutations like with Koloss spikes. I would not take this WoB as literal, this is more like something that Brandon used to make us understand better how Mistsnapping works, not a real numbers. I would be very cautious with taking this literally. We only know that everybody has a Preservation's fragment in them, that's innate investiture, and people with powers are more invested than non-Metalborns, with Mistborn/Feruchemist being the most invested. But it's hard to judge the true level of their investment. Plus most non-Metalborns would be below those 20% as they weren't snapped by the Mists. But again, those aren't real numbers, it sounds like he made them up as he was writing this. That makes it better? A metal wire inside your body would drastically reduce your movement, cause internal injuries, bleedings as the metal is cutting deeper into your tissue, not to mention potential of metal poisoning and infections from such surgery. Metal wire is stiff, it won't move when you would want to twist or turn your body, it would cut you internally to pieces as a wire is less willing to change its shape than your muscles and fat are. This is a really, really bad idea. Deadly idea. You want to skin yourself alive? You really want to kill your Hemalurgist on the spot, because that's how you do this. There is a reason why you don't even put a piece of armor on your bare skin, and you want to put it under your skin? Nope. That would be a really short and painful existence. It's easier to just have a spike and deal with it, rather than skin yourself, then have metal plates cutting you deeper and deeper with every move you make, and have no skin, as you can't attach your skin to metal plates. This is not Hemalurgy anymore, this is pure torture.

I want to point out that Set's spike was described as a needle - that's a very thin spike, not a lot of metal. Inquisitor spikes were more like a railroad nail - massive, raw and bulky. That's a looot of metal compared to Set's spike. I think that a typical spike used by Set was somewhat in the middle of it, more similar to Kandra's Blessings or Koloss spikes - still bigger than a needle, but smaller than a railroad nail. If 30 people's worth of Investiture can be stored in a needle, then an Inquisitor's spike could potentially hold hundreds people's worth of investiture. With some metalworking you can make a spike that's as big as Inquisitor's spike, but doesn't stick out of your body and doesn't have a nail head that is easy to grab. Problem solved. Still 20-30 people's worth of Investiture is quite a lot in my opinion. A wire can be cut. What would a cut Hemalurgic wire do to your powers granted by this spike? It would basically cut you off power. Not a good idea, if one of your points against Inquisitor's spike was "easy to remove", with which I don't agree they are easy to remove, Vin did it only when Ascending, before she worked with Elend to remove a single linchpin from a few Inquisitors, which was quickly prevented by adding a plate on top of the spike. It's much harder to remove your spike if you don't have a linchpin. But your wires are much worse than that, a single sword cut can sever the entire network.

I think it has to be more or less specific. That's because intent is one of three main components of Hemalurgy, the other two are a type of spike and a binding point used. All of those three components must match to successfully steal what you want. But I think if you intend to use a piece of metal as a Hemalurgic spike, and you just want to steal something just to damage the soul, it would rip off a chunk of spirit web, but not really a usable one, just a random piece of a soul. You might need to have a specific thing in mind to steal, but wrong metal or placement of the spike would still steal something, even if that's not what you intended to steal. Some WoBs partially about this: You have to pierce the binding point, you can't do it with a round bat, you need something pointy to stab it through the body. Feruchemy can heal damage done to the soul. With the right intent, those bullets might work, but only if they hit some binding point, which is really unlikely. Binding points are very tiny, and those bullets have to be really precise. That's my opinion at least. I think you can steal a lot and they won't grow that back. You're stealing parts of their soul responsible for those attributes, and that's something Kandra can't heal. If you steal strength from them, they would be permanently weakened. But you don't want to give yourself that attribute - Kandra aren't human, they are different species and that would probably cause big mutations in your body. Chimeras were likely created by stealing attributes from dogs - just look at the amount of deformation present from a single spike. Anything that gives you a glimpse into SR can help you with finding the right spot. Electrum Misting or A-Atium would be a big help with spiking a Kandra.

A short quote box with a spoiler box inside, that has an expand option, isn't working right - if the quote box is expanded before I open the spoiler box, the quote box doesn't change its size after the spoiler box inside is opened, which makes the spoiler box extend beyond the quote box, covering text under it. It happened here If the spoiler box inside it is opened before I expand the quote box, it works fine, but if the quote is expanded and then the spoiler box is opened, the above happens.

I think the death of the Stormfather would stop the Highstorm cycle completely, leaving Roshar in a permanent Weeping period - just constant rain, no Highstorm at all. But yes, potentially Highstorms can be stopped in one place, just like the Everstorm was stopped by Odium in OB. The Stormfather remarked how Odium is riding the Everstorm, just like Honor used to ride Highstorms. Someone like Honor would be able to stop Highstorm, but if Dalinar tries to he might break, or maybe even deadeye the Stormfather (after all, the Stormfather constantly warns Dalinar not to push him as this hurts him and it might break things Dalinar doesn't understand). I think it's likely that it will be Dalinar who deadeye the Stormfather, after he pushes him too hard, there is some foreshadowing for this idea. RoW ch 107: Not likely, there is another Death Rattle about this moment:

I'm pretty sure Chimeras were made with senses stolen from a dog, and maybe even intelligence stolen from a human (as Set's version was able to "think almost like a person"). Their whole body would be deformed, you are not stealing just "senses", you're stealing parts of their humanity, their identity (identity is tied to their Spiritual image) and those stuff, which would give you whole body deformations - but their organs might get especially deformed. I wonder if Lerasium spike would lessen the deformations granted by attributes, as you're stealing all attributes at once, thus your body might get evenly changed, resulting in more human form than any other Construct can have. After all this is Preservation's metal and it might make sense that it will try to Preserve you even in Hemalurgy. What do you think @Trusk'our? It's hard to predict what Hemalurgy would make out of you, after all what in stealing strength makes your skin blue and not growing? Not to mention almost the total disappearance of intelligence. You can make quite wild guesses, which is always fun.

Yes, but Straff had 18 Misting kids (and an unknown number of non-Allomancer children). Mistborn even back then were quite rare. The answer was provided in this WoB before AoL release, if you want: And this WoB from 2015, saying the same as the above one but leaving a little room for uncertainty: If you want to know:

Skybreakers in space means a second recreance?
alder24 replied to Atlas333's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It's interesting, but I don't think there needs to be a second Recreance. Skybreakers have a much easier time to leave Roshar, as they can use the Surge of Gravitation and fly out of Roshar. Also they are perfect diplomats as they won't break any laws and thus they don't infuriate local people (in theory). Other orders don't have such an easy way to covertly arrive on a far away planet. Shadesmar can be watched, is crowded and you have to relied on shipping routes, and we know from TLM this isn't a viable way of transportation (it isn't FTL) - Elsecallers won't be a good option, and Windrunners have other duties and are soldiers bound to protect and uphold morality - not a good choice if you want to threaten others into submission. In TLM those people are members of Ghostbloods. I think it's very likely that those particular people are bonded with corrupted Highspren and might even be a splinter group of Nale's Skybreakers (or they were just old Ghostbloods members who finally got their corrupted Spren bond from Sja-Anat, as Mraize wants that badly). I don't think they are servants of Odium as there would be a conflict of interests between them and Kelsier. SotD2 is so far in the future that everything can happen at this point. However what picked my attention is this part, spoilers: -

I think what @therunner tries to say is that the force of steelpush acting on a coin is the same, no matter if it flies through the air, or it hits a wall - we can agree on that one. Then, because of Newton's 3rd Law, the force of reaction would act on Vin continuously when she is pushing the coin. This force is equal to the force of Vin's steelpush, and because of Newton's 3rd Law it doesn't matter if the coin is in the air or it hits a wall, the same force is still applied to Vin. Therefore it makes no sense for Vin to fly backwards when the coin hits a wall, because the force acting on her didn't change, it should be the same as it was when the coin was flying through the air. But we clearly know that a Mistborn is flying when coins hit the ground/wall, thus Newton's 3rd Law doesn't apply here, as another force starts acting on her the moment the coin hits a wall and that's not the force of reaction from Newton's 3rd Law. To say it simply, Newton's 3rd Law can't be the reason why Mistborn are flying when coins hit the ground, because the force of reaction didn't change and is the same as when coins were flying through the air before they hit the wall.

I think the shard of my soul is about Spren bond - this death rattle is from the perspective of a former Radiant who had broken their oath, shortly after Recreance. My theory on that one is that Taravangian will win the contest or make Dalinar break the rules of it. He will kill Dalinar and make him a Fused but this will deadeye the Stormfather, causing endless Weeping (many Death Rattles are about it) which would accidentally flood Kharbranth, and thus Taravangian would break his own deal with Odium, which would expose him to Cultivation, forcing him to withdraw from Roshar. This Death Rattle is from Taravangian's PoV. Reference to the endless Weeping after the Stormfather death in my theory. I wonder if this isn't about the battle of Thaylen fields? Dalinar counted 9 Radiants (without Venli who is the 10th) standing in front of the Everstorm - the wall of black and white and red. Yes, that again fits to my theory - with Stormfather being dead, there would be no more Highstorms, and no more Stormlight, and thus Odium would "win". I think you might be right. Inversion of the 1st Ideal, that Radiants can say to break their Oaths - that's what I think happened during Recreance, that's what Shallan did when she broke her bond with the Testament (literally she said words very similar to this one). This one makes me think that Moash is under the influence of Dai-gonarthis and that's what makes him emotionless. I think this is again about Stormfather's death per my theory. Light fail means no Stormlight. Storms didn't die with Honor, this one fits my theory as well. Ascension to Honor. To fix the Stormfather someone will need to Ascend to Honor. Again per my theory.

There is no new 17th Shard as far as we know - even Harmony is 2 Shards combined. We don't know why there are 16 base metals, but it might have something to do with the Shattering and 16 Shards or maybe ever before it. Metals have some kind of spiritual component and that's what makes them special, that what makes them interact with investiture, and probably that's what makes the 16 base metals works in Metallic arts. But those components came before Scadrial was created (because of the Dragonsteel in WoB), so it's that Metallic Arts uses those base 16 metals because they already had specific spiritual components, not the other way around. I would not expect any new base metal popping into existence because of that - this is locked by the mechanics of the magic system of the whole Cosmere, not just Allomancy. I think that was simply a foreshadowing for Lerasium - the Lost Metal and the "17th" metal.

Yes. It's liquid, it's not a metal. If you somehow made Dor into a god metal, then it should work just fine. I would say so. Alloys would work too.
-
I think that's because Shardblades are sapient spren maniesting in the PR. Normally god metals are just a Shardic investiture leaking into PR, no sapience, no sentience, not even any self-awareness. Shardblade and even Shardplate are vastly different from that.
-
Technically yes, but in practicality no: Shardblade are already full of investiture, they can't fit additional Hemalurgic charge: Also Shardblades are made of an alloy of Tanavastium and Koravellium, god metals of both Honor and Cultivation. Pure Tanavastium is in Honorblades, but the problem is the same - you need to separate a piece of it from the blade to make it work like a spike.

All bubbles would have the same radius (assumption). Assuming that they walk in a straight line and don't move until they need to make the next cycle of bubbles, the first guy Bill will stand in the center of his bubble, and the second guy Bart will stand on the edge of the bubble. When Bart creates his bubble, it will have the same radius as Bill's bubble, and therefore it will catch Bill standing in the center, overlapping with his bubble and speeding time from him 2x. Both Bart and Bill will experience 2x the speed of a regular bubble. But then the third guy Bob will go to the edge of Bart's bubble, place his own, and that one will catch Bart standing in the center - making him 3x as fast as a regular bubble would give him, because 3 bubbles overlap where he stands. Of course they can all follow each other, instead of standing in the center of their bubbles. Yes, when Bill exits his bubble it will collapse, but they all are in Bart's bubble so this doesn't matter that much. They will be running from 2 bubbles overlapping to just 1 bubble, before the next one is made and another 2x overlap is affecting them. I didn't want to say that they would constantly move 2x or 3x, this only applies where bubbles overlap (3x would be just a point). The bubbles pop not when they touch the edge, but when they leave it - as long as some part of a person is inside the speed bubble, they will be included in its effect. Standing on the edge of a bubble is fine.

I knew it! This whole idea was just a cover up for you to promote your cult!

It works. But they would move 2x as fast because the bubbles overlap, or even 3x for the guy standing in between the other 2 guys. You could make this with just the 2 of them, and it would work just fine - the bubble would be roughly the same size so every time one of them would make a second bubble, it would include the first guy standing in the center of his first bubble (but they can just move together). If you have 4 of them, make 2 of them make 2 bubbles simultaneously in the same place, speeding the time 2x, and then the other 2 would make 2 new bubbles on the edge of the first 2, in the same place, speeding the time 4 times. Fast and cool. But Wayne is doing almost the same thing with his single bubble - he runs inside the bubble, dropping it as he gets to its edge and almost immediately making a new one. You need a lot of practice but it works.

Oh right, got you. Thanks for clarification. Look at the WoB I've provided - you need an external source of investiture if you want to soulstamp yourself into a Mistborn/Feruchemist, like a jar of Dor. When compounding you would use investiture from this jar, not from Preservation. A nicrosil medallion would work for you as long as you have this jar (not to mention you would need to be both a Feruchemist and a Mistborn to make such a medallion, and that requires external investiture). You are a Mistborn as long as your jar has some Dor in it. The moment it runs out, you no longer have any powers. For just Feruchemy you shouldn't need that much of it, your body fuels it, but there is a tiny bit coming from Shards that fuels transfer of physical attributes into investiture, and that would need to be fueled by an external source as well - you need to provide it as you can't draw from Shards. Basically, as far as we know right now, no matter how hard you try, if you forge yourself into a Mistborn, you need to give the Soulstamp lots of investiture, like a jar of Dor, and that would fuel your Allomancy. Sooner or later investiture will run out and you will lose your powers.

No, it doesn't store weight-force (which Brandon said that Wax doesn't use modern physics terminology, weight in W&W means just mass), it stores mass directly (but not in a physical sense - your body doesn't change). But this really doesn't make sense if you go into details - F-iron follows conservation of momentum, but when taking into account different reference frames it doesn't work well. And F-iron just breaks conservation of energy. It's just weird. Not to mention density is the same no matter F-iron. Just don't think about it in terms of physics, but rather as a cool magic thing. The increase in strength doesn't make you stronger, it just allows your body to hold new gained mass and move normally - but you won't punch harder or something like that. Gooood, very gooood There are clues left by Brondon in the HoA Annotations, if you really want to know:
-
Storing weight doesn't affect your body physically which is weird if you think about it. Your body doesn't change, only your weight changes. F-iron kind of breaks down physics a little. Wax is just constantly storing weight, which has no impact on his physical appearance (like for example storing strength in F-pewter has). Here is a WoB from AoL annotations about this particular fight scene and weight if you're interested: Koloss-blooded are offsprings of two Koloss. Full Koloss still exists and they require spikes, but Harmony changed them so they can breed true as a species to preserve their unique culture. WoBs: They are called Ferrings (but in the books they are often referred to as just Feruchemist). Yes, Feruchemy got broken down into singular abilities, because people started intermixing and Allomantic genes interacted with Feruchemical genes, breaking them aparat which resulted in Ferrings. Do you want us to answer some of your questions, like here, or do you want to figure them out yourself? I don't think everything will be explained in the books, like what happened to Ferrings, but I really don't want to spoil you anything that will be explained later in the books.

Using Hemalurgy to Transition Between Realms?

Not every time you access SR you get future vision, Aon Tia don't give you that, Dalinar creating Perpendicularities don't have that etc. -
Using Hemalurgy to Transition Between Realms?
alder24 replied to Trusk'our's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It would work if you don't "exist physically" in that realm, like for Kelsier to be pulled into PR more. Probably he would still need an anchor in the form of a body to get fully transported into that realm. No, I don't think so. She has a body, and nothing in Hemalurgy makes this work like that. At best you would get what Lift has - greater presence in CR allowing there to see and touch spren. But Hemalurgy doesn't deal with the body transitioning into another realm. That's what I think is the most likely. I don't feel this is right. It might give you a little edge if you already have a future sight, but on its own it won't make you see the future, and probably wouldn't even increase your Fortune.
