An Extensive Interview with the Team Behind the Kaladin Album
CaptainRyan commented on Chaos's article in Columns and Features
Wow. What a moving story about how this came to be. Hats off to everyone involved in the project. Good luck and I will spread the word as much as I can!- 13 comments

I read this in entirely a different way. To me, the Stormfather is saying that being able to make "oaths" is a hallmark trait of sentient beings. As the Parshendi are capable of making oaths then they would have this "mark". As others have brought up, the Stormfather did not treat Eshonai in a "racist" manner. If anything, the Stormfather seems far more racist against humans (due to the Knights Radiant abandoning their oaths).

Way of Kings Prime Scene, Two Way of Kings Annotations
CaptainRyan commented on Chaos's article in Brandon and Book News
Tough call. Part of me would rather Brandon cut back on some other series/books and write annotations but I fully understand that he needs to do things his way. So, if it was up to me I'd vote for annotations but seeing as I'm just some random fan on the internet I will instead be happy with whatever Brandon chooses to write!- 17 comments

[OB] The Great Voidbringer Army
CaptainRyan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
Definitely agree with you there. This tactic would be very effective against a lot of the world. -
[OB] The Great Voidbringer Army
CaptainRyan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
Just to clarify, are you assuming some portion of the Voidbringer army starts farming? Otherwise, unless they raid these communities right at/around harvest time, there won't be a ton to pillage. Even if they raid just as a harvest is completed they will only steal enough food to sustain them for a (relatively) short time. If the Alethi use their soulcasters to provide food (and, thanks to the gemheart hunting of the last six years they have a solid stockpile of gemstones) then I think the Alethi, even besieged, will be able to feed their people for a longer period of time than Voidbringers who subsist solely on pillaged food. -
[OB] The Great Voidbringer Army
CaptainRyan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in Stormlight Archive
The same could be said in reverse. Won't the transformed Parshendi still require food? They can pillage for a while but then they are going to need a stable food source, eh? Unless they have some form of soulcasting... perhaps? @Calderis The Stormlight Archives is going to have a "War of the Worlds" style ending! -
I plan on buying it for two reasons: 1) I want to support the idea of the Cosmere being brought to different mediums. Overall I was very dissatisfied with the graphic novel but I absolutely LOVED the visual aspect. I can only hope that we see some Mistborn, Stormlight Archive, or other Cosmere short stories or novellas given a similar treatment. Prose is great and all but actually seeing the landscapes, people, buildings, magic, etc. in a beautiful color format was simply fantastic. So, sure, the first adaptation was comprised of chull leavings. To me, that's ok because it gave a small glimpse of one of the Cosmere worlds. 2) I bought the first one and I want my Sander-shelf to be complete haha

Spike's weakness (Full Trilogy Spoilers)
CaptainRyan replied to Fifth of Daybreak's topic in Mistborn
With some caveats I would suppose that the answer is "infinite". The spiritual realm has no time or location as we perceive them so a hemalurgic "pincushion" (I like that term btw) could be, conceivably, susceptible to shardic control anytime, anywhere. Before anyone gets too huffy about this conjecture, let me just say that it would not surprise me if there were limitations to how this works. For example, it is possible that only a Shard that is invested on the same world as the "pincushion" could exert control - e.g. if Harmony is the only Shard on Scadrial then he is the only Shard that can affect "pincushions" on that world. There are probably a number of other practical limitations that prevent any Shard from controlling a "pincushion" at anytime/anyplace. -

People who doesn't like Brandons books
CaptainRyan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in General Brandon Discussion
I agree that 1-star ratings are usually rubbish. I generally try to read the 2, 3, and 4 star reviews of things. I find them to be more honest haha -
People who doesn't like Brandons books
CaptainRyan replied to Toaster Retribution's topic in General Brandon Discussion
My sister read the original Mistborn trilogy and said she ended up hating the story overall because of the ending; specifically she hated that Other than that, I do not have any personal experiences with people who dislike Brandon's works. I have, however, spent a bit of time reading 1 and 2 star reviews of his books and, let me tell you, they are sometimes pretty hilarious. -
Is there any thing in Stormlight you don't like?
CaptainRyan replied to ICanDream's topic in Stormlight Archive
Agree with the complaints about excessive resurrection. I also did not enjoy the ending "pace" of Words of Radiance. So much happened in the last few chapters that felt incomplete. I would have liked to see more interaction between the new Radiants (Dalinar, Shallan, Kaladin, Renarin) but, instead, we get one tiny scene where almost nothing of import occurs. Also, Kaladin just straight leaves and no one is like, hey, slow down buddy, let's talk about this. Stick. Lyft. -
I might like Kaladin even more than Drizzt
CaptainRyan replied to bridge4's topic in Introduce Yourself!
@bridge4 Kaladin is one of my favorite characters are well. He has such powerful scenes! Amaram's army & his squad, Tien's death, the rescue at the Tower, Whitespine Uncaged, the speaking of his oaths, his internal struggle with feelings of failure, etc. Love it all! -
Also, and I may be wrong on this point, but I do not think Nightblood can absorb Investiture unless he is being wielded. So, if I am understanding the mechanics correctly, someone would have to unsheathe Nightblood in a highstorm and somehow not die from channeling all of that Investiture through their spirit web (very unlikely).

Here is a breakdown of the costs: CAMPAIGN FEES: Kickstarter's fees combined with transaction processing fees adds up to around 8.5%. So, just reaching our minimum goal, that's around $9,350K that we won't even see. If we raise $1M, that becomes $85K! REWARDS, FULFILLMENT, DISTRIBUTION: Once the campaign ends, we have to mix the music, design, commission, and print all the artwork and rewards, and organize shipment for the rewards to be sent out. Excluding the creative work, we still need to hire someone to help fulfill the orders (so we can spend our time making this album the best). This is why we appreciate you paying the extra shipping cost. Still, with everything, order fulfillment comes to roughly 35%. At $98K raised that's about $38.5K. If we raise $500K - $1M, we'll get increasingly discounted bulk rates, but even at $1M, it's still over $200K. TAXES: We're doing all we can to keep taxes as humanly low as possible, but we're also going to be keeping things legal. We do have to plan for the worst, and the tax giant is still around 15-18%. At $110K that's $18K in taxes. At $1M it's $165K!! This is part of why we're pushing to record, mix, and distribute the album before the end of the year. By doing this, we can reduce our tax burden by writing off the costs of production. STARTUP COSTS: Any creative project of this scope has a lot of prep costs. We've had to pay for licensing, hire an orchestra, pay for flights, and so much more. Another start up cost is the music and artwork itself. All of our composers and many of our concept artists deferred some of their payments to reduce the up front costs. All said, startup costs are around 35%, which comes to about $38.5K if we hit our $110K mark. At $275K, the startup costs increase to $97K, but the nice thing is that they stay there; startup costs will remain the same for every dollar over $275K. This is why reaching $300K will allow us to record the twice the music we've already recorded! And reaching $500K will allow us to hire some amazing performing artists for some Bonus Tracks we are DYING to make!

Just to clarify @Stormsurfer, by "Stormrunner" you mean "Windrunner" right? Someone bonded to an Honorspren who has access to the surges of Gravitation and Adhesion and can use the following powers: Full lashing, Basic lashing, and Reverse lashing? If so, I second Calderis - a Fullborn would absolutely destroy a Windrunner. Fullborns are possibly the strongest, in terms of raw combat power, human magic user we have seen in the Cosmere. Off the top of my head I cannot think of another magic user who could go head-to-head with a Fullborn. An Elantrian, given enough prep time, might be able to think of something really useful to do with Aons... maybe.

Truly, nothing is beyond Calderis' power.

Your Least Favorite Cosmere Story And Why
CaptainRyan replied to Stonesinew134's topic in Cosmere Discussion
"Shadows of Self" is, in my opinion, the worst Cosmere book. I wrote about it elsewhere but, in the end, I guessed Sanderson had a lot of trouble writing this book before he told us he did. It was, to me, fairly obvious that he was not sure how to get to the ending of the book. Also, compounding has ruined the Metallic Arts for me a bit. Way too stronk imo. "The Hope of Elantris" is my least favorite short story by far. There really is not much to recommend it. -
Over in this thread, it was mentioned that we have this WoB from an inscription: "Preservation was the first shard to be held by someone outside the original 16." Assuming this refers to the events in Mistborn era 1, do we think it is possible that any of the Shard holders initially picked up one Shard but then traded with one of the other Vessels for another? If so, any speculation on who might have traded and why?

If you live near Murder by the Book then you could buy it on day 1, read it, then bring it to the release party to get it signed eh?

What's your favourite fantasy series?
CaptainRyan replied to ICanDream's topic in Stormlight Archive
I voted for Mistborn era 1. There is no other series I have recommended as much as that one. I have literally purchased ~10 copies and given them to friends, family, and complete strangers. That being said, I have a strong dislike for the word "favorite". I think the "Kingkiller Chronicles" is one of the most beautifully written pieces of literature I have ever read. Patrick Rothfuss is Michelangelo of writing. The "Belgariad" by David Eddings was one of my first fantasy series and I think it is a wonderfully accessible start to fantasy for younger readers. "the Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch was one of the most captivating and entertaining books I have read in a long time (warning: the rest of the series is, to me, hot garbage). "The Hobbit" is the premiere classic in fantasy and I would find it hard to take a fantasy reader seriously who also claims they have never read it (yes, yes, that is pretentious of me but come on! It is the freakin' Hobbit for crying out loud!). /endrant
