  1. Ahem, it's "WOBINATOR 4000" not "THE WOBINATOR 4000".
  2. Someone upvote this for me; I'm out of them and this deserves double the regular number of upvotes. TIA
  3. Brilliant! Simply brilliant! Once the Arcanum goes live, will us lay folk be able to help with transcribing, updating, etc.?
  4. If they do a 10th Anniversary leather bound of "Edgedancer" then I will buy that. But I'm fine, for the moment, with just Arcanum Unbounded. Though, it would be nice to have a stand alone "Edgedancer" copy to place between "Words of Radiance" and "Oathbringer" on the bookshelf... Dang it. Maybe I do need one. <EDIT> Unfortunately, the hardback edition of "Edgedancer" is significantly smaller in all three dimensions than the Stormlight Archive hardbacks. Learning this was a huge disappointment as that means I cannot insert the standalone hardback in-between the "Words of Radiance" and "Oathbringer". Will not buy. </EDIT>
  5. I want to start from the beginning to get the right feel for the flow and pace of the book. I feel if I skip ahead it will break the pacing. Then again, I read fairly quickly and am taking Tuesday off from work so I plan to have the book finished by Tuesday evening.
  6. From the original Kindle version of Words of Radiance, page 346: "It faded. As always, the Thrill was fleeting once battle itself ended. It had grown less and less sweet during these raids on the Parshendi, likely because he knew deep inside that this contest was pointless. It did not stretch him, did not carry him further toward his ultimate goals of conquest. Slaughtering crem-covered savages in a Heralds-forsaken land had truly lost its savor." Now, I supposed it is possible that the reason he felt this was because Nergaoul had moved but we see during the Battle of Narak that others felt the Thrill so I think Nergaoul was still close enough to affect things.
  7. I'm trying to figure out how to word this without it seeming like I am trying to defend Amaram. What makes you say that hitting on a grieving widow is within Amaram's character? He did a horrible thing in killing Kaladin's squadmates and taking the Shards for himself but, from Amaram's point of view, it was an unfortunately necessary evil in order to advance his plans of bringing back the Heralds. That certainly does not excuse his actions but it does provide context. Hitting on Ialai would not advance the cause of bringing back the Heralds so I'm not sure he would do that; not to mention it is entirely possible that Ialai is 10-20 (or more) years his senior. I guess it is possible that he thinks wedding Ialai would give him more resources to pursue the agenda of the Sons of Honor but as he is already the regent of the Sadeas Princedom that does not seem to be necessary.
  8. The Thrill is clearly a negative thing, but this feels like it takes it a step up. Dalinar is starting to find more satisfaction in mindless slaughter of as many people as possible than the challenge of a good fight. Whatever flashbacks follow this, it's not going to be good. I find this interesting because it is almost the exact opposite of how Torol Sadeas was feeling before his death. He was depressed by not having any real challenge and was bored slaughtering Parshendi with his new Shardblade. Does that mean the Thrill affects people in different ways? Does it represent a change in tactics by Nergaoul? Is it something worth noting or is it simply flavor for the story?
  9. Two items of note: 1. Is Elhokhar having an affair? That mention of Kalami as always scribing for him recently set off alarm bells in my head. <EDIT> I searched WoK and WoR for Kalami and it turns out she was General Teleb's (the Oldblood's) wife. I believe he died in the battle of Narak. So, she was lonely, he (Elhokar) was lonely... maybe? </EDIT> 2. Where the heck did the red herring of May Aladar go? I thought the same thing!
  10. Here is the post on Brandon's site: https://brandonsanderson.com/oathbringer-release-party/ There is a lot of good info there but it does leave a few things vague. I'll do my best to clarify on your questions but, in all honesty, some of these questions might be better asked to either the BYU bookstore or to team Sanderson. There are three wristbands available: regular, VIP, and what I will call early-bird (for those who want a numbered book in the 1-99 range). 1. re Regular from the blog post (emphasis mine): "Wristbands for the Book Release Party are FREE and will be handed out starting at 10:00 am in the UVCC North Lobby. A wristband guarantees you a seat. Limited seating. You may pick up ONE wristband for yourself and ONE wristband for another person." I'd say it is ok for your sister to pick up a wristband for you as she is, technically, allowed to get two. Be aware though that you will be asking your sister to, in all likelihood, get there very early, wait a long time in line, and listen to people constantly theorize about Shadolin or Shalladin! It would be prudent, I think, for her to get there quite a bit before 10:00am to guarantee a wristband. 2. re VIP from the blog post: The VIP event does not start until 7:00pm. It seems like you can make it before then so, if you bought a VIP ticket, you can pick up your reserved wristband at the VIP party itself (I think). 3. re early-bird from the blog post (emphasis original): "IMPORTANT! Numbered wristbands 1–99 will be issued at the BYU Bookstore at 7:45 am on Monday, November 13th. PLEASE NOTE! All campers must still pre–order their book! We will only give numbered wristbands to the first 99 campers. You must have your barcode as proof of purchase. Your numbered wristband will guarantee you a seat at Brandon’s Presentation and Q&A." So, if your sister is willing to camp out in front of the BYU bookstore for you from Sunday evening until 7:45am Monday morning then, if she has your pre-order barcode as proof, she will (most likely) be able to secure you ONE wristband this way. I am actually helping out another Sharder in a similar way. I will be picking up their pre-ordered book and taking it through the personalization line for them then shipping it to them afterwards. As far as we can tell, as long as this Sharder sends me their pre-order barcode (which will come closer to the event via email) then I can pick up their book. It would be best, however, to call the BYU bookstore and triple check this as I certainly do not want to be responsible for a mishap!
  11. Tough call. One thing that I do not think we have seen from Lift is the ability to see spren all the time; i.e. if she could see fully into the CR she should be able to see spren everywhere all the time, no? Therefore, I do not think Lift would see Kelsier unless he was trying to make contact; otherwise he would be as invisible as any other "spren" in the CR.
  12. On top of that, I thought someone mentioned to Jerrick (after he had been a bridgeman for a bit) that Drephrast had only started showing up recently. You know, coincidentally right around when Frost showed up.
  13. Does anyone else think Frost might also be Drephrast, god of the Sho Del?
  14. That is a really, really tough call. I always complain when people ask me about "favorites" haha, whether it is book characters or food. In no particular order, I very much enjoy Rand, Mat, [redacted], [redacted], [redacted], [redacted], [redacted], and Lan. Sorry for all of the redactions but as you are only on book 1 I worry about spoiling anything. If you are super curious about who else is on the list then I can post again with the names behind a spoiler curtain for you to peek at later haha
  15. Trust me when I say that I completely understand your pain. Throughout the series, each character will be the cause of frustration, headache, annoyance, rage, despair, disbelief, and more. The Wheel of Time is fourteen books long and, without spoiling anything, I can say that each character has tremendous growth (like, yuuuge!). Egwene will still be Egwene fourteen books later but, at the same time, she will have change and grow due to what she encounters. All of the characters do. So, if you are raging mad at a character right now, give them a few books - they might get even worse haha! Many of the characters in the series are polarizing. Some people end the series despising Egwene, others see her as one of the best characters. For me, personally, I never really liked Perrin. Sanderson, on the other hand, said his favorite in the series is probably Perrin. Go figure haha. Good luck with the series! I hope you enjoy it!
  16. But with more fire, right? Lego. I will recover faster... I think. Would you rather lose your sense of taste forever or be deaf for 22 hours a day? (note: neither are affected by leap years because February 29th is magic)
  17. I can appreciate a fellow work sufferer. I choose the cockroach. It would not be the weirdest thing I have eaten. Would you rather be alone forever or have your all day, every day being live streamed to Twitch?
  18. Just as an fyi, in most signings you are limited to getting three (3) books signed/personalized with one trip through the line. If you want to get more than three (3) books signed then you will need to go to the back of the line after your first trip and do it again. Some recommendations: 1) Take a deep breath before meeting Brandon. He is super nice and there is no need to be overly nervous/shy. 2) Prepare a couple of questions ahead of time (if you want to ask him anything that is) 2a) It doesn't hurt to post your questions here in the forums before the signing - there are a TON of common questions that have been asked before. 2b) If you ask a repeat question, don't worry. It is your question and your interest and, sometimes, it is nice to hear the answer directly from Brandon instead of reading it on the forum. 3) If you can, buy something from the hosting location. They go to a lot of trouble to put on these events and Brandon is very pro-helping-out-the-store. So, if you have the means, purchase a book while you are there; it doesn't even have to be Brandon's book haha That's all I can think of off-hand. Hope you have fun!
  19. Seriously! I have digital numbers in my bank account that I want to transfer to Shire Post Mint's bank account! Would love to see spheres made!
  20. I think this might be slightly off-base. Time is only slowed inside the bubble, not outside it. So, if you stacked, somehow, thousands of Pulsers and created a point of really, really slow time then all that would happen is the person or persons in that central point would be experiencing (to them) "normal time" but each one (1) second of their "normal time" would be worth days/years/decades of outside time. Once the bubbles dropped they'd find themselves millennia (or even further) into the "future" from their perspective but, for everyone outside the bubbles, time would have moved through those millennia "normally". Right?
  21. Ads! Money! Everyone is doing it!
  22. It truly is a great chapter. If you have not heard of/ listened to the Graphic Audio adaptations of the Stormlight Archive then I highly recommend you check them out. I routinely go back to this chapter for the scene where Kaladin and Szeth have their discussion after the fall from the building. As you said, so emotional. Szeth is so raw in that moment and Kaladin is so confused.
  23. Please be kind to new members who might not know the ins/outs of the forums. It is very easy to skip a thread you do not enjoy without being "blunt". This PSA is brought to you by me.
  24. You are right that "Edgedancer" is a must read before Oathbringer. Do not skip that. Beyond that, I don't think any of the other stories are must reads. "Mistborn: Secret History" has some interesting tidbits about how Connection works but it is only mildly related to anything we have seen so far in the Stormlight Archive. None of the other novellas have anything even that closely related as far as I can recall. If you have not read "Warbreaker", a stand-alone full sized book, then I do suggest you get to that. It has some very interesting, if, at the moment, minor elements that are part of the Stormlight Archive. Congrats on the ARC! I hope you enjoy your early read! Edit: @Muggins, tagging you in my reply in case you do not have email notifications turned on for the post. Edit 2: Also, welcome to the 17th Shard!
