I have to agree with Green Hoodie Mistborn on favorite scene... I'm generally not a sappy kind of person (I'm often accused of being a little too stoic) but the whole, Kaladin overcoming his past betrayals, bellowing into nothingness about not being fooled again, and then embracing his heroic nature and charging in to save the day...actually makes me tear up. The first time I tried to read it out loud to my wife (she refuses to read the books becuase I've already spoiled every sanderson book for her, and she's not a huge fantasy reader anyway) I couldn't get more than a few paragraphs in becuase I kept choking up. Seriously, this part really gets me...I had an easier time delivering my best man speech at my big brother's wedding! Favorite character has got to be Lift. I know we haven't seen a whole lot from her...but come on...she's totally AWSOME!!!

The Stormlight Archive: A Pocket Companion
hoidhunter replied to Argent's topic in Stormlight Archive
I am sooo happy I was able to get a copy of this book. When I heard that it was a free give away, I was expexting some paperback psuedo panphlet...dude...it is a super nice little book. Really nice hard cover, nice thick paper pages. The book store I visited only had 3 copies...I got one, my wife got one, and a fellow 17th sharder (never got his name) grabbed up all 3 the moment the book store opened. By the way...dude at Chaucer's in Santa Barbara...what's up? I wish I had introduced myself! -
Upvote to OP. This was the thing that led me to go from forum lurker to member. I'm soooooo happy someone asked Brandon about Felt in person. I think that Felt is not 17th shard, not Hoid, but maybe affiliated with Hoid.

I see where OVERSLEEP is coming from...but...I also have to agree with King of Nowhere. The metal itself does not contain the investiture, rather, it is simply a filter that tells the investiture what to do. We see evidence of this in that some allomancers are more powerful than others, and can gain the use of more investiture from burning the same amount of metal vs a "weaker" allomancer. So, when a feruchemist creates a metalmind, they are really changing the code that tells the investiture what to do when burned. A piece of steel's coding changes from, "push on metal", to "make lots of speed." The confusing part (as oversleep points out) is that, the amout of feruchimal charge that you get from burning a metal mind, seems to have less to do with how much metal is being burned, and more to do with how much feruchimal charge it already has. So let's try thinking of it this way, as you put more of a feruchimal charge into a piece of metal, the code continues to change. With 1 FU in a piece of steel, it is coded to generate 10FU when burned...but with 2 FU, it's coded to generate 20 FU, 3FU = 30FU, and so on. The amout of feruchimal charge that a metal mind has before being burned is not actually being multiplied by burning, it's simply coding the piece of metal to turn more investiture into the same type of feruchimal charge. This feruchimal charge is immediatley available to the compounder for use, unless they can redirect it into another metalmind. I don't ever recall reading anything in regards to how fast a metalmind burns during compounding. It may actually be more efficient to compound metalminds that are small pieces of metal full to the brim with a certain quality, vs a large piece of metal with a relatively small amount of feruchimal charge. I may be wrong about this...but it seems to make sense to me. Thoughts? (BTW, upvote oversleep for adressing this.)

Facts before guessing. Checking before assuming. Reason before conclusion. "I will extrapolate instead of criticise. I will bring the details together." Count me in guys. I don't know how much input I'm going to have over the next couple of months (moving across the country), but I'm flattered for getting the invitation.

Imagine a soulcasting chef. Someone who was REALLY REALLY good at soulcasting food stuffs. I know the idea is not really relevant to the current discussion, but still...

Yeah...I refuse to believe that it's "just a name he liked." brandon puts Easter eggs all over the place, and it's always with a purpose. Even if it's just, it's a common name on the world where trellagism originated. But I get the feeling that it's going to be more than that. I think that we witnessed the origination of trellagism in that scene. By the way...I have zero evidence to back up that claim...just a hunch. It's a little coincidental that the character named trell was told to always seek out help from someone else, when the shard that is using the religion is obsessed with independence.

Personally, I love a hero who is completley unhinged. It makes for a much more intersting story. Between the two of them, I like Kel a lot more. Kal has his great moments, but he's so whiney. I think he could use a little bit of the "smile through difficult times" that Kel does so insanely well.

Uses for Feruchemical and Allomantic Abilities
hoidhunter replied to The_Dark_Fungi's topic in Mistborn
A chromium misting would indeed make a fine first responder for a variety of situations. When I first read AoL I immediately began imagining a real life superhero who calls himself "The Waiter." Get it...he makes people wait... There are definitely other, outside the box, ways that A-chromium could come in handy though. Simply burning a little bit at a time in order to speed your way through minutes or single hours at a time could be really useful in making better use of your time. I would do this habitually, if nothing else you would theoretically be extending your own life span a little bit at a time. If you did this a lot, starting at a young age, you would find yourself at 30 years old on paper, but having only lived through 27 years of time. Over a lifetime this could really add up. Ever since reading the scene with the wagon in BoM, I've been wondering about the possible offensive applications of A-chromium. Imagine that there is a high speed chase going on...you can see the fleeing suspect speeding down the road toward you. You stand off to the side, out of their path, but close enough to catch them in a bubble. As soon as they are in range you put up the largest bubble you can, and the fast moving car goes from 85 mph to almost zero, starting with the front end, while the rear portion is still trying to move at 85mph. In theory, this would be like they were slamming into an invisible wall...halting their flight, and potentially killing the driver. -
Yeah...It's hard to be a "true-breeding" species without sexual organs...unless they have some sort of really off the wall method of reproduction. But the simple fact that some people are "koloss blooded" meaning that they have some koloss heritage means that koloss are capable of interbreeding with ordinary humans. This would be difficult to achieve without normal male/female genitals.

I assume Cultivation...but...that's just an assumption. I'm sorry that I don't have anything else to add. But I also don't think there is any other relevant info that could be used to determine exactly who he is referring to.

Well...as is mentioned above, we have a WoB somewhere about allomancers being able to burn any metal that is inside their body, it doesn't have to be swallowed. That being said...I kind of agree with Stormgate's statement. Why would you want to inject metal into your blood, when you can just swallow it instead. Often times, can and should, are two different things.

I remember reading somewhere, that in the pre-ascension era of scadrial, hemalurgic spikes were used for religious purposes...ie, a way for people to communicate with their gods. Somewhere in one of the log book entires from mistborn, Elendi mentions "Having the piercings of the Hero." or something like that. On a separate note, Brandon has mentioned that hemalurgy can be used, in some way, with all of the other magic systems. Now, this is my own speculation, but I feel that this creates the misconception that you can take an atium spike, jam it in an elantran, and become one. I may be wrong, be I think we have already seen certain manifistations of what could be called hemalurgy on Sel, with the darkhor.

interestingly enough, ants are actually hydrophobic, they can repel water and enclose themselves in a small bubble of air. this allows them to survive for around 24 hours despite being completly submerged. Neither is the least bit suprising. (I always thought that if I ever own a boat, I'm going to name it "The unsuspucious fishing boat") Asimovian AI androids are like billionaire real estate tycoons. -

I'm sorry, I have been posting in both threads, and apparently got rather confused. Both can be described in very literal terms without conveying the slightest hint of how they are commonly perceived. Friends are like parshendi. -
Well, regardless of whether or not Parshendi have gemhearts...I would say that the similarity between the two (that may account for chasmfiends fighting with voidbringers) is that the chasmfiends pupate during highstorms to change between juvenile and adult forms. Just like how parshendi go out into high storms in order to change forms. I assume that somewhere we are going to find out that the everstorm turns chasmfiends bad as well.

I just wrote on my pad of paper (using a pen), "There once was a website called the 17th shard. Many people used it to discuss their theories about Brandon Sanderson books. Sometimes the people disagree and get very defensive, but mostly they converse in a civilized manner. The end." You're bane is that you now have to do the same, but change the story a bit. I wish for proof that you have done this. -

I'm also super impressed that you actually granted my previous wish...if I could upvote a PM I would...but I'll just upvote your last post instead. -
So...this is not all that groundbreaking as an easter egg...but I thought that it was fun when I noticed it. In Final Empire, when Kel is first training Vin in allomancy...she burns iron without knowing what she is doing...the result is a nail flying directly at her out of the dark. Kel saves her, and her immediate thought is "Did that metal bring objects to life? That would be an incredible power indeed." Totally unremarkable on your first read...then you read Warbreaker...and realize that this was incredibly subtle foreshadowing on Brandon's part for something that takes place in a different magic system. I wonder if there are any other examples like this?
