Rebus thought this development was interesting, though the subsequent events might be less interesting than Ryna seemed to think.

"I am literally cheating - every bit of this technology would fall apart if anything resembling normal physics were applied."

A ball, as requested, materialized from the air in front of him.

-

Rebus nodded, managing to put satisfaction, acknowledgement, and permission into the motion.

-

"Ah. I could simply kill them for you - Eli is less expendable than I'd expected, though clearly not whole." He shrugged.

Rebus cocked his head. "Why would I want to be?" he asked, attempting the overhead swing a second time. "A soldier is one of many, and that is a dangerous position."

"A solider is a man who knows the battlefield." Cricket said, jumping aside. He was half a second too slow, however, and the blade nicked his shoulder. Cricket stood, feeling blood drip down his sleeve.

"A soldier is a man who knows what blood feels like." he said, slowly, advancing. "Who's seen light fade in the eyes of their brothers. Have you, Rebus?"

He took another step. "Do you know the scent of blood? The sound of a bone snapping? The feeling of a bomb exploding in your face, a bullet passing through your arm?"

"You're no soldier, Rebus. You've never suffered. You've never even felt pain."

She nodded to eli. Elinore lead them to their ship. Which was a pirate ship though it was on land. She climbed onto the ladder.

-

"Eli? Who.. no this is a different planet then the one atlas and the rest of them are on. Only two people have been here. You and ryna the chronicler." She said folding her arms. "And i would rather you not kill the lesders of a planet wide crime syndicate. That would cause more harm then good"

Ryna followed Eli, keeping an eye on Rebus. She did NOT like him.

Rebus laughed, ruining his next strike. "Never felt pain! Cricket, every moment I do not exist is spent in endless confinement, unable to act, nothing ever permanent. That is torture, and not metaphorically so; a normal man would be driven insane in days. I do not feel pain, but could you say that your mind would remain after that endless nothingness?"

In fact, the barkeep seems inable to see you.

The woman held an arm up, and her hand clutched a detonator. She pressed the button, staring patrons of the tavern in the eyes. "When I let go  of this trigger, this building will explode. So you need to do as I suggest, or..."

@KaladinsSenseOfHumourSpren, cuz this is relevant.

The woman gasps at the illusory sword, then looks at the hand. She snarled, and her eyes began to glow.

”Insignificant,” she spat, grabbing her hand. The controller was crushed under the pressure.

Rebus cocked his head. "An ordinary person granted near omnipotence could indeed have anything they want." He smiled, eyes glittering. "But it's all just words. I could be have all the luxury in the world, and it would be just the same to me as being tortured."

"Then why do anything at all?"

"Yes." Rebus said simply. "I do."

-

Rebus thought, throwing out utility fog projections of various plotlines. "The fairest option would be the newcomers - preferably before they get a plot going. Lyric and Jack would be a good choice, as perhaps would be the former companions of Sequence, the High Notblades and those they are interacting with, the group seeking Plot Significance, or Eli and Ryna."

-

Jack followed, jumping clean over the Sage. He did a roll as he landed, springing back to his feet next to Lyric. "That man seems mad. Both kinds of mad."

Unintelligible took a step towards Rebus. Just one. "You." He growled. "Are a terrible person. Once I've buried Sequence, I will fight you to my last breath, just like you want. But now, here, I am in no shape to fight. You want conflict, engagement. I am in no state of mind to provide either. Neither is Aelinor. So what will antagonizing us here accomplish?"

--

"I lean towards a less established plotline." Malevolence mused. "These newcomers seem a good prospect. But I would like to know more about them before committing." He stood from his chair, and suddenly his appearance changed. Where once had stood a villainous-looking man with violet eyes, blond hair, a dark labcoat, and a black axe, now there stood a short, balding man wearing thick glasses over his grey eyes, and a rather worn suit. "Shall we welcome them to the Thread?"

--

The Sage indeed looked very much both kinds of mad, as he attempted to stand up, only to slip on the oil and fall on his backside. Despite his anger, however, neither the Sage nor his minions left the mall.

Lyric hung his hammer back at his side, breathing out heavily. "Well, my friend. I am sorry to have lead you astray." He looked at the sun, which now hung low in the sky. "I would sleep better if we put a few miles between ourselves and this place before nightfall. Shall we go?"

Malevolence glanced down at his drone, which was giving real-time updates due to the quantum linkage system he'd developed. Excellent. He thought to himself. Most excellent indeed.

Cricket smiled.  "I know that pain as well. I've spent eternities in silence, depending on my Author to move, to speak. Do you see me break?"

He couldn't tell if his taunting had any actual effect on Rebus, but he needed to strike regardless. He leapt forward, feinting to the left before slashing at Rebus's right.

This level of inexplicablity was indeed suited to the task. "Good. Now then - there is a man within a cave, formed of vapor. If you search for him, you will find that cave, regardless of where you are. He is the gatekeeper to a smith of great skill, and you may attempt his test if you wish, but he is not the one you want - for around this cave there should be strange happenings. Follow them, and you will find the quarry." The first man is Omen, who is played by NameIess

Mischief was happy. Caves had all sorts of nasty things she could utilize. She then zoomed off and started erratically scanning the area

Some time passed, but a flaming, bush-clad mischief appeared at the cave

I’ll need you and probably nameless to describe what else happens as y’all actually know what’s happening.

Most futuristic technology is impossible, of course, but utility fog - given the thermodynamics, computation complexity, and intensive nanotechnology - is one of the most so."

One of those utility fog walls appeared, the system making an educated guess as to where it should go.

-

Rebus followed, lifted himself to the deck with utility fog. "How does the ship sail?" he asked, hovering next to Eli.

"Yes, but my goals remain the same - reminding the Authors of my situational ruthlessness. I suspect I could manage said crime syndicate, but if you wish I shall teach you the art of manipulation." He smiled. "The secret to much of my success lies in a situation known as the AI box test. This scenario is a thought experiment, in which a superintelligence is placed within a closed system and allowed only to write text on a screen. This is an attempt to control the superintelligence - an entity trapped within a 'box' cannot take over the world, but can still communicate plans that would improve it. Unfortunately, when simulated in real life - one human, with none of the enhanced capacity a true superintelligence would have, writing text to another who plays the researcher - it is overwhelmingly clear that the simulated AI can talk the researcher into letting it out, even when actual money is at stake."

"This is done in two ways. The first is bribery - within the test, anything can be offered by the superintelligence, since it is after all a superintelligence - from incredible technology to simple wisdom. The second is that the simulated researcher only has to agree once - the AI has plenty of time to argue, and merely one moment of weakness is enough to let it out." Rebus grinned, eyes sparkling. "Sound familiar?"

Due to my lack of intelligence HUH??? I dont know what ang of that means.

he chuckled thr ball at it.

-

"eh... magic?"

-

evaiya blinked, "what is aye ie.?" She asked very confused.

Omen appeared at the cave’s mouth. He did not take the form of mist, this time, but of shadow. He was a shifting mass of darkness some twenty feet tall, with vague features.“Who sent you to this place?” Omen asked, dark fangs flashing as his mouth moved. “I thought I made it clear that those who seek the Dreamsmith are supposed to find me by intent, not by asking around. Did I put up with that ridiculous brave adventurer for nothing?”

Mischief thought for a moment

She decided charades would be the best way

She made a tiny halberd and swung it around. She then stared into the distance and spoke in complete gibberish in a monotone

She then dropped the act and realized the big shadowy guy looked sad and needed a friend, so she gave him a few thousand insects to keep him company.

Omen watched this in consternation. How was he supposed to create a trial for someone so… erratic? Perhaps he could call Meat the Minstrel back in.

As Omen considered, he shrunk down into the form of a pure-white spider, sitting atop a web of mist that hung over the entrance to the cave.

”Er, are you… seeking the Dreamsmith?” The spider asked.
