Me: Holy crap! What could this mean... Don't panic, don't panic. Remember, authors are cruel and misleading. Try and keep that in mind. Um, um, maybe his son fell asleep. Or something. Man, Feather's gonna die when she sees this.

Edit: To put this in context, I checked on my email while in English Class with a super strict sub. It took all of my willpower to not scream out loud in horror and shock. I settled for nearly throwing the laptop instead. And making a full body motion like I had been shot in the chest. Emotionally, it was more like my heart was ripped out and then shoved back in upside down.

I believe Adolin had it coming for quite a while, he will be the reason Dalinar will kick some a$$ to make the king end the war and return back to Alethkar, but that's my gut feeling.

From the excerpts and Reflections of Radiance:

Adolin growled, feeling the old Thrill of battle as he shoved aside Salinor’s attack

<skip>

My prize,” Adolin said, suddenly feeling drained. The Thrill faded from him. Storms, he’d never before felt like this in a duel.

I believe the thrill can be compared to the dark force in the SW universe. Adolin is impulsive and got fits of rage he's prone to make mistakes "in the future"(I mean by that farther in the book compare to the referenced chapter).

hence, from the Reflections of Radiance:

  • Gah. I finally had to quit copying every sentence that gave me a thrill—there are just so many. Oh, so many lovely things happening. ______ laying down his burden was superb. ______ charging was brilliant. _______ dying (sad face)—he died well, but how terrifying that death would have been! _______’s return was breathtaking. _____ crashing... (I’m running out of superlatives!) Ah. It was hard to remember to breathe during this chapter.
  • Even the second and third time through, this moves me to tears. Maybe especially the second and third time, knowing what the results will be. Oh, you fool. You fool. You fool.

one/both could fit the scene of his passing away, and yes I know it's a stretch.

but a male soldier will die in this book it's a fact(again from the Reflections of Radiance).

add to it the glimpse "Dalinar knelt beneath a fracturing sky, holding his son."

make me think it's a high chance it's Adolin. the only thing to hint Renarin dying is having a weak blood, him wanting to prove his worth and getting a new shardblade(unfamiliar weapon).

My guess is, either this is a vision... or

Adolin is killed by Sadeas during their duel for Shards

Or, of course, this is Renarin passing out because of his blood weakness while he is in battle. But I prefer choice one. Hahahaha--sorry Adolin, but you deserve it.

Here's the whole idea for idea 1:

Adolin and Sadeas are fighting. Sadeas kills Adolin. Dalinar runs out onto the battlefield and holds Adolin in his arms. In a burst of emotion, Renarin uses amazing refracting/reflecting/sky-shattering powers and zaps Sadeas to the same place the Heralds used to go when they finished defending from the Desolations...

Adolin is killed by Sadeas during their duel for Shards

I am so for this theory. Adolin is using the fact that he doesn't duel to make people think he isn't very good at it. Sadeas doesn't duel as well... so when Adolin challenges him, thinking Sadeas is a fop who can barely use a sword, he'll be surprised when Sadeas turns out to be very good and wins.

Oh I want to see Adolin lose to Sadeas so badly right now.

I GOT IT! Just a guess, but what if this is a highstorm vision? That would be the easiest way for this scene to occur without spoiling anything plot-wise.

Wait, wait, I got it! What if Dalinar and Navani get married, and he is holding his dying "son" Elhokar in his arms?!

Seriously though, I think I like the idea of Adolin dying to Sadeas' blade. In fact, I swear that somewhere in tWoK, it says that Sadeas is actually very good with a sword... And thanks goes to eveorjoy for finding it for me! ;)

Chapter 15 "The Decoy" Page 229

Not a Shardblade, for Sadeas didn’t have one. But he did carry a lighteyes’s side sword. Plenty deadly; Dalinar had fought beside Sadeas on many occasions, and the man was an expert swordsman. Wit stepped forward.

Dalinar's second chapter in WoR also speaks of Sadeas talent. I hope he doesn't kill Adolin, however. Besides that being too simple a death for Adolin, I think Dueling Adolin would socially be beneath Sadeas. I'm sure we will get to see his swordmanship at some point, but in some other way.

Dalinar flashback? Maybe he's remembering his son(s) when they were younger? He may not remember his wife, but he might remember the grief his son's endured.

This Glimpse was so effective. I hope all of the Glimpses that follow are as good or better. As much as I enjoyed this Glimpse, I hope the promotion did not peak here.

Try not to read too much into it guys. It is out of context after all. ;)

For those who need it, I have also been compiling a list of the glimpses HERE. It's just a Google doc and living in Aus means I can't update it straight away, but I try to do it first thing each morning.

Regarding people saying "Peter wouldn't let them put this in if they really died":

From earlier in the thread:

They picked one where my comment was something like "HAHAHAHAHAHA NO." Actually that had to do with this.

Pretty sure they picked that quote just to screw with me.

Could this be the glimpse he was referring to? Or will we know that one when we see it...?

damnation!

Personaly I think that this glimpse is misleading for two reasons:

First: as we know that somebody is going to die our first reaction with a glimpse like this is that one the Kholin brothers is toast.

This is what the people at Tor want; to us to panic, to speculate, to get scared about our characters, to get progresively more nuts about it all!

Basterds! :)

Second; the most obvious part takes our attention away from the important part:

The "fracturing" sky.

THAT can't be good, more if this isn't a vision but an actual event.

Wild guess: The reaction in Shadesmar of Odium's arrival on Roshar, reflected in the physical world. Major bad mojo in the world, everybody down or on their knees, like when Dalinar witnessed the Recreance.

That does seem the most plausible..One of the kholin Boys dying would be a major spoiler, so this does seem like the most logical (to me )...

It could be a flashback to Dalinar taking Renarin to be healed by the Nightmother.

If it is a flashback it is in the wrong book.

I always tought that there's a big contrast between the two Kholin brothers. Brandon wrote a lot about how Adolin loves to duel, is a great tactician and will be leader of the familiy someday. I think it would be a very sandersonesque move if he took that away from Adolin, let him get paraplegic or something similar.
He could've lost a duel .. get "a shardblade to the knee". Maybe i'm right, but that would be cruel.

Taking a page from Warbreaker eh?

I doubt this will happen. Too much is going on in Roshar to add a "how is Adolin going to deal with his handicap" subplot. It would be interesting though.

"Prince Renarin, would you kindly slay this rock for me?"

Someone making fun of Renarin? Shallan teasing him? Someone acting very flippant in the presence of a thunderclast?

"Prince Renarin, would you kindly slay this rock for me?"

First thought, Shallan flirting with Renarin over an almost dead Thunderclast. I dunno....
