The difference is he has intent to kill by breaking a tie. Also the reason my posts aren't justified is because I'm on mobile enroute to a date.

Cycle 2: Cremlings In A Highstorm

If there was one thing Arina knew, it was that timing was everything.

You didn’t make it, as a reporter, until you found the big scoop: the one no one else had thought to cover, the one thing so impressive that even her superiors would have to acknowledge her worth as a reporter then. And finding the big scoop was half the problem: beating the competition (if there was any) to it was the other half.

She’d heard of something particularly juicy: the Blackthorn being summoned off to a clandestine meeting, and a mysterious corpse being discovered in Urithiru.

Her task, now, was to quietly get to the bottom of this. She could just see the report in the next day’s broadsheets: ‘BODY FOUND IN URITHIRU--BLACKTHORN COVER-UP?’ Cover-ups and scandals, of course, sold well. But she wanted to be meticulous about it. That was the other difficulty. How did you thoroughly research something that the Blackthorn and his aides insisted had never happened?

Her source insisted that he’d spoken strictly off the record; that he couldn’t give her any access to the corpse or to the existing notes than he’d already had. Probably a surgeon, she thought. A slightly strange profession for a lighteyes, but by no means impossible. Certainly, he handled his eating utensils with the deft precision of a man who regularly cut arrows out of men and lanced wounds for a living.

Being darkeyes, Arina knew, was a bit of an impediment, where these things were concerned. She had to tread a careful line between inquisitiveness and overstepping the boundaries of politeness. She was, after all, talking to a lighteyes. Even if he was a surgeon. Even if neither of them were in the military, which meant that the norms that applied were social, rather than those of rank. “Well,” Arina said, with a disarming smile. “Surely someone who’s trained as many years in your craft as you must’ve been asked to comment on the state of the corpse?”

He raised an eyebrow. “Fishing,” he informed her.

“It is my task,” Arina admitted.

Her informant carefully set down his utensils for a moment and regarded her. “I’m paid for my discretion,” he said. “Not for babbling about my Highprince’s affairs.”

“You did tell me about the corpse in the first place,” Arina pointed out. “Why do so, if discretion is your first concern?”

He didn’t answer, not immediately.

“I think,” Arina pressed, leaning forward, her lips curving in a triumphant smile, “You’re not as concerned about silence as you think. There’s something else, isn’t there?”

The surgeon drew a deep breath. He said, “Three things.”

“What?”

“First,” he held up a finger and folded it back as he spoke. “You’re wrong about how concerned I am with silence.”

“Oh?” For some reason, it had suddenly become difficult to breathe.

“Second,” he said, ignoring her comment. “You’re wrong about why I approached you. And third,” he held up his third finger, “You should know that dried blackbane leaves are often rendered into powder. There is a faint bitter aftertaste; easily detectable by those trained to notice such poisons. Of course, when ingested with Herdazian spices…”

He nodded to her half-eaten plate of food.

“...it becomes considerably more deadly. The paralysis, I’m told, should be setting in right about...oh, now.” He smiled, faintly. “It should be quick, if that’s any consolation.”

“...W...hy?” Arina managed to choke out.

The surgeon shook his head, tiredly. “That’s the first and second thing you got wrong. If it’s any consolation, I consider killing to be a waste, and a corruption of my art, but unfortunately, we must all do things we consider distasteful to survive. Goodbye, Arina.”

He picked up his utensils again, and continued with his meal, those frost-pale eyes studying her intently.

They were the last thing she saw as black spots--as black as as dried leaves, she had to imagine--encroached over her vision, and finally…

Nothing at all.

Malarn supposed he would’ve died if it hadn’t been for a passing sentry--a one-eyed Brightlord carrying, of all things, a spear, and whistling a jaunty tune.

And all he had done was to head down to the kitchens to beg a meal off the cooks.

He’d gotten that, too, after certain amount of disgruntled muttering about how he was introducing rancid odours into their kitchen. That, he didn’t understand at all. He sniffed at himself again and sighed. “It’s the fragrance of a man, storm it,” he muttered, as he gave up and began prodding at the stew.

It certainly smelled mouthwateringly good, but some of the pieces of meat were--as expected--tough as boot-leather and could probably be used as shields to fend off the Parshendi. Except, they weren’t quite fighting the Parshendi now, or so the word went. Malarn wasn’t really sure. He didn’t move in those rarefied circles; the affairs of Highprinces were, as far as he knew, none of his concern.

The spices, at least, made the entire dish edible, and before he knew it, he was scraping the bottom of the bowl.

That was about the point at which he began to feel a pleasant sort of numbness creep over him. It was the sort of lassitude of stepping into a warm bath (not that Malarn took very many baths; they did terrible things to his manly fragrance) at the end of a gruelling day. It was like his mind had gone sluggish all of a sudden, as thick as honey, for he hadn’t even realised that he was slowly keeling over until someone was bending over him.

“And, here’s the riddle of the day,” the man muttered; his features were badly marred by burn scars, although these had faded with the passage of time. Malarn wondered if he was hallucinating things. “A man who stinks--or a stink who is a man?”

Malarn tried to answer, but for some reason, his tongue felt strangely swollen and clumsy in his mouth.

The man tsked and set down something on the ground with an audible clack. “Now, that won’t do,” he said. “I imagine you’ve got things to do, stars to see, and all of that, eh?”

Malarn blinked.

That was right before he was hauled up, with surprising strength, and the man stuck two fingers down his throat.

Malarn gagged, fought, and ingloriously puked his guts out.

The man sighed and shook his head. “Sometimes,” he said, “It pays not to get involved. Sometimes, you just end up knee-deep in manure. Or, as the situation may be, in someone else’s vomit. Try to stay away from poisoned food in future, hmm? Redspine isn’t the most pleasant of ways to go; take it from someone who knows. Carpe diem, appreciate life, stop to enjoy the rain--or, as I would suggest in your case, the benefits of a warm bath. Which, as I see you’re more or less going to live, I’m about to do so myself.”

Malarn croaked, “Thank you?”

The man tsked. “Can’t stay,” he said. “Places to be. I’m sure you’ll understand. Eventually. Or perhaps, not at all.”

There was a side of Highprince Sebarial that the other Highprinces--that others, for that matter--seldom saw. But that was the way of life, Kaddar thought. Pressure revealed things: force a man to crack, and you saw new aspects of them you’d never have known before.

It was under pressure that you knew what a man was made of, how he thought, how he reacted. It was then you sorted those who’d defend a brother to their dying breath, and those who’d stab their brothers in the back without a second thought, if enough hinged on it.

The plump, usually obnoxious Highprince, was no longer smiling.

“Fortunate for Maximilianos that you ‘happened’ upon him,” Sebarial said, at long last.

Kaddar offered a faint, almost-bow. “I, of course, live to serve,” he said, with a smile that was more a flash of teeth. “And I have been known to be a master of appropriate timing. In fact, if someone hadn’t been so inappropriate as to have vomited on me…”

Sebarial threw back his head and laughed, if briefly. “Well,” he said. “I see your sense of humour hasn’t changed, at least.”

“It’s a skill, Brightlord,” Kaddar said. “I pride myself on stubbornly resisting all attempts to change. It’s a valuable lesson I learned from a stone.”

“And who won?”

“I wouldn’t dare to say,” Kaddar replied. “The stone might be offended.”

“Damnation, Kaddar,” Sebarial said, abruptly changing the topic. “They tried to kill my nephew. Whoever they are.”

Kaddar raised an eyebrow. “Wasn’t aware you were fond of him. And this is Alethkar, Brightlord. This is Alethkar, squashed into one miserable stone city. And you wonder why it is that a man can’t get up to take a piss in the middle of the night without stumbling on someone murdering someone else--or at least trying to?”

“I’m not,” Sebarial admitted, “But Palona is.”

Kaddar nodded wisely. “Ah,” he said. “I see.”

“Still,” Sebarial said, “All that joyful stabbing and murdering and plotting is spilling over in this miserable stone city. I’ve had some of my spies listening and three of them died to bring me this information.” He looked at Kaddar. “I could use someone with your particular set of talents.”

Kaddar thought about it. “Actually,” he said, slowly. “I’m just passing through Urithiru. I wasn’t planning on getting involved in politics…”

“Bah!” Sebarial waved off his response. “Don’t tell me you actually believe that, you inveterate meddler.”

Kaddar shrugged. “Maybe I’ve mended my ways,” he said, piously. “I’m quite the reformed character now, didn’t you know?”

“And inconsistent,” Sebarial replied. “Considering you just told me you’re too stubborn to change.”

Kaddar acknowledged the point with a faint smile. “So I did,” he said. “Well, then I’m inconsistent as well. It’s another of my charms.”

“I’m sure,” Sebarial said. “So, since you’re not interested, I presume you won’t want to hear anything about what my spies have uncovered…”

Kaddar hesitated.

“Well,” he said, “Maybe I was too hasty…it happens, of course, particularly when one gets rather impatient and overly-fixated on particular goals...”

Sebarial beamed. “I thought you would see things my way,” he said. “Tell me, have you heard of the Sons of Honour?”

“I need you to spy on the Ghostbloods for me.”

Wilson stared at Sebarial. “If this has anything to do with the attack on your nephew, I’m leaving. Thanks for the invite; it was nice to see Urithiru finally, but I have more important things to do than to protect your own family, Sebarial.”

“Now, now, Wilson. Is that any way to treat an old friend?”

She raised an eyebrow. “You got the old part right. Jury’s out on the friend part. If it’s not about your nephew, what is it about?”

“It’s about my nephew, but it’s more than just him. I couldn’t care less if the boy got himself murdered tomorrow--don’t tell Palona that--but there’s a greater scheme at work here. The Diagram.”

Wilson nodded. “And you want me to help how?”

“You have connections to the Ghostbloods.”

She stared at him. “...How do you know about that?”

Sebarial smiled. “Don’t worry; you won’t be alone. I’ve got someone else here to help you out, and I’m sure you two will get along like two cremlings in a Highstorm.”

“That expression tells me nothing, but fine. I’ll do it.”

“Wonderful. I’ll leave you to do what you do best, then.”

I guess I'll start things off with a vote for Shallan. Although things didn't go well last time I did this, this game should be different. (hi wilson) I'd mostly just want to hear from her.

Wow. That Cook is an utter jerk. Why would you wish a third N1 death on Mailliw?

I'm putting a vote on Venture Mistborn, for a suspected WGG. It seems awfully fishy to me that a Doc would save him. Venture wasn't a huge suspect in the Day, and I'm quite frankly surprised that a Doc would guard him.

Luckily, the Scholars have it easy, because only one person died. :P

Posted

So it seems that if there's a tie, there won't be a lynch? I didn't realize that.

And I'm glad Mail lasted till round 2. Congratulations! :) Now what would be the motives behind the three attacks? It seems we have two active cooks and the Diagramists. So Venture, Arraenae, and Mail were attacked.

Mail- caused quite a stir with his fake list. He initially claimed Ghostblood with his list, then claimed Son of Honor when he admitted to it's falsity. Some believe he's a Diagramist, others don't.

Arraenae- I'm actually kind of surprised they were killed. What posts did they make before they died? I'll pull the posts from Adavantos's list...

Arraenae: RP post regarding write-up and Clanky’s vote against Paranoid King. Votes for Clanky asking for an explanation.

Arraenae: Retracts their vote on Clanky in favor of Orlok for being “eager to kill someone for giving new players advice about PM safety.” Reminds him that new players have no prior experience to go off of and tips like this are extremely useful for them, obvious to recurring players or not. Also asks for Hellscythe’s reasoning for thinking that Stink is a Diagrammist. Edits in that both her faction and the faction of those she knows the faction of are wrong on Mailliw’s list.

Arraenae: Responds to Kynedath’s long analysis post that called her out for voting on Orlok. Retracts her vote from Orlok in favor of Kynedath, citing the fact that he composed a long analysis post but did not vote for anyone in it, believing it to be suspicious.

Arraenae: Assures Kynedath by referencing the primary element of the game; deceit.

Same with Venture actually. Looking through his posts, he claims to be a "good guy" runner captain, but doesn't specify if he's a Ghostblood or Son of Honor. Many discuss him, and Seonid and Mail vote for him, but Mail retracts his vote.

In my estimation, Mail was attacked either for his list, which gave people suspicions of him being a Diagramist, or for claiming to be a Ghostblood (by a Son of Honor cook who didn't recheck later), or for claiming to be a Son of Honor (by a Ghostblood cook). It's also possible he was attacked by a Diagramist cook who thought he was too clever, or that there were enough reasons to kill him that it'd be difficult to determine a motive.

Venture was attacked, seemingly, because the Diagramists believe, or want us to believe, that he really is a non-Eliminator Runner.

Arraenae. They could have been attacked for claiming to be a Son of Honor (since they were listed as a Ghostblood on Mail's list and they said that was wrong), or for showing suspicions of Kynedath. They were most likely killed by a Ghostblood Cook.

EDIT- looking through the Rules, I notice it doesn't mention anything about ties in lynches.

GMs- What occurs when there's a tie in lynches? No lynch? Random lynch? Is there a minimum vote number? I doubt it, or it would be mentioned.

Because if there is supposed to be one, it seems probable that we hit an Explorer who was Exploring, or possibly someone who was hit by Regrowth.

Also, I didn't realize originally that Edgedancers and Surgeons could heal, so there's at least 3, possibly more healers out there.

Well, I guess I get to have the first word here. I'm not sure how to feel about it. My gut is screaming at me that not everything is as it seems here. First - to the cook whoop targeted Maill, poor form. Just poor form. I can understand any you thought he was suspicious, but for shame! This would have been the third game in a row he was killed on the first night.

Other than that - it's odd to me that nobody messed with the lynch vote. It's odd to me that two out of three kills were protected. And it's odd to me that Arrenae was attacked at all.

Also, I love the mechanic of not learning roles upon death. But I also hate not getting that information. Just a PSA.

I never mentioned this last cycle but I normally do at the beginning of all SE games but I don't like Village Kill roles attacking so early. There isn't enough done in one cycle for one person alone to decide who should die. I know that not everyone agrees with me here but I'm sticking with it.

As for the three kill attempts:

Mailliw: Understandable even though it is rude.

Arranae: Voted several times so maybe someone didn't like being voted on? Voted for Me, Kynedath, Orlok and Creccio.

Venture: Two players claimed Runners. One talked a lot and would be more likely to garner protection. The other (Venture) didn't do much other than the claim making her an easier target if the Diagrammists want to shut down PMs.

Also for today I guess we don't need to worry about getting multiple dead people scanned by a scholar so that's a plus.

Hi guys: mildly embarrassing, but both Wilson and myself missed that we forgot about the votes, so I'm putting a provisional tally here. Wilson will add it into the main post once she's on a computer.

Malarn (2): Aleral, Alycia Kavdar
Inor Haze (2): Arina, Cla
Edurams (2): Malarn, Slalassalas

Slalassalas (1): Agrigar Leiken
Maximilianos Sebarial (1): Sheon Idris

Why do I always stick my foot in my mouth whenever I cast my first vote. Seriously, this is like the third time I've been on the chopping block for casting just one vote. Anyways, I don't think Adavantos is that suspicious anymore. He responded to my comment quickly, and greatly contributed to the discussion. In addition, I didn't realize he had been doing those summaries in the last game he was in, so those really can't be considered too suspicious. I'm not discounting the possibility he's evil, but I trust him now.

Now lets look at the body count. Venture was attacked by the eliminators because he claimed to be a runner. Limiting PMs is generally a good strategy for Eliminators, but they might have attacked their own member in order to make us trust him. However, I doubt that. Generally speaking, it's not a good idea for game balance to allow the Eliminators to protect themselves from the lynch, as it wastes a day of discussion. Since all healing in this game does that, I doubt the Diagramists would have the resources to pull off that type of move. Therefore, I'm going to trust Venture.

Unfortunately, there were also two poisonings. Mailliw loves to create chaos, so it's unsurprising he was attacked. I'm a bit sad about Arraenae though. I believe she was a new player, so it sucks she was killed day one. Ah well, I suppose that's how we welcome people here. I guess it was the Ghostblood's cook that killed her, as she claimed she was a Son of Honor. It's nice that there's only one body to examine this cycle, but that makes it a prime target for an Elsecaller to mess with. Information is at a premium in this game, especially if we can't even trust our scans.

In terms of suspicions, I'm going to cast a vote on Bort. He voiced suspicion of Adavantos and Mailliw, but he never shot a vote out at either of them. In addition, he strongly encouraged us to think about this as a faction game, instead of focusing on finding the eliminators. That just serves to create more bloodshed, and only helps the Eliminators.

Post updated with the vote tally.

Also, I've updated the very first post of the game--as in the sign up post--with the link to the first writeup. I will continue doing this throughout the game, so you can find your quicklinks there.

Is "saved" specified to Surgeons and Edgedancers? Or does that count for Explorers and Elsecallers as well.

BecausecIlhaveuattheorycthathMailbisaandElsecaller.

Also just in case anyone didn't see my post from the end of last cycle--- I advocate for the Theidakar and/or Restares to come out and say who is in each faction because the evil team most likely already knows. And the more information they have that we also have, the better.

If an explorer or an Elsecaller using Transportation is attacked, it will not show in the writeup, since it technically didn't happen. The killer could not find their target.

And to clarify, what happens with tied lynch votes if there's no shenanigans? A random player dies?

Everybody lives. No one gets killed by the lynch.

Since nobody was lynched this cycle I would say it stays as a tie with no death.

Stink (2): Orlock, Elbereth

Sart (2): Mail, PK
Adavantos (2): Deathclutch, Sart
Creccio (2): Arraenae, Clanky

Mail (2): Araris, RippleGylf
Hellscythe (1): Phattemer
PK (1): Adavantos
Venture (1): Seonid

Here's the list that Adavantos had, with my adjustments, but I don't think it's right. The discrepancies seem WAY too large. Anyone willing to go through the thread and double check, counting all of the first red posts of each person?

(3) Stink: Hellscythe, Orlok, Twelfth,

(3) Sart: Kipper, Mailliw, PK,
(2) Adavantos: Sart, DeathClutch,
(2) Creccio: Clanky, Stink,
(1) Hellscythe: phattmer,
(1) Orlok: Arraenae,
(1) Venture: Seonid,
(1) Mailliw: Araris,

(1) Paranoid: Adavantos

I'll wait till this is confirmed before trying to comment.

Point of order to help with the vote tally discrepancies: any retraction counted last cycle. If you placed a vote, retracted it later, but didn't retract it from the first post, I still counted the second vote. The reason for this is because the request to retract from the first post was made a while after the start of the cycle, and a rule like that should be in place from the beginning of the cycle. Hence, from now on, only the first red name will count.

Okay, wow. I mean, I understood I was going to draw fire from my play last cycle, but really, cook? 3 in a row? I'm just glad someone believed me enough to help me out. So, thanks, Saver, and Cook, go poison someone else, please. :P

Arraenae's death is the interesting one to me. She was fairly new and has only played one or two games prior to this. My gut says the kill was from someone in LG15 who saw her learning a lot and becoming quite a good player.

Venture's attack is unsurprising, the interesting part is his survival. When he claimed to be a Captain and a Runner, that immediately would draw fire from any Diagrammists and potentially enemy faction cooks. I didn't think he fished for protection well enough, as he didn't claim a faction, so neither side know if they wanted to save him or not. I guess someone anticipated the Diagrammists' plan though, and got it just right. This doesn't feel quite like a WGG to me. It's possible, but doesn't ring true to me.

Thanks Wilson! In that case, again going off of Adavantos with the changes after as well:

(3) Sart: Kipper (1), Mailliw (3), Paranoid King (2)

(2) Adavantos: Sart (1), DeathClutch (1),

(2) Creccio: Clanky (2), Arraenae (4)

(2) Mailliw: Araris (1), RipplyGylf (1)

(1) Stink: Orlok (1)

(1) Hellscythe: phattmer (1),

(1) Paranoid King: Adavantos (3)

(1) Venture: Seonid (1),

(1) Starry: Hellscythe (3),

And our result was:

Sart (2): Mail, PK
Adavantos (2): Deathclutch, Sart
Creccio (2): Arraenae, Clanky

Mail (2): Araris, RippleGylf

Stink (2): Orlock, Elbereth

Hellscythe (1): Phattemer
PK (1): Adavantos
Venture (1): Seonid

So Elbereth was moved form no one to Stink, Kipper was moved from Sart to no one, and Hellscythe was moved from Starry to no one.

So I can think of 3 reasons votes are moved.

1. The person themselves have a vote-changing role, and move people to protect themselves.

2. Either a leader or a follower of the person has a vote changing role, and they figure that it's better to bet that they aren't a Ghostblood than that they are, so they move to protect them.

3. They are a Diagramist and so a Diagramist moves the vote.

The most suspicious of these moves (to me) is Kipper's move from Sart to no one. If it weren't for this change, Sart would've been lynched. Also, it seems likely that either Starry or one of Starry's leaders or followers is a vote changer, or Starry's an explorer. I don't think the Diagramists would've moved a vote off of someone that only had one vote.
