  1. Welp… I’m banned from the shard for an indefinite amount of time. Tomorrow’s my last night. It’s something about getting real friends (but the people around me are boring or moral-less) so yeah see y’all when I leave the house.

I’ll just go cry now. See you tomorrow.

Killing characters and resurrecting them quickly becomes cheap as Frusty said. The most you can do this for one character is twice, best would be just once. And if you do do it, try and set it up early on. Don't do it with multiple characters in your books too. It will become predictable.

Yes, Wizard will die in time. So much potential in that happening. Been planning it for a while, since he came back. This time, he will be dead for good.

  3. Okay, hi all! And happy Thanksgiving week! May there be pies with dragons on top upon all your tables. They’ll appreciate the tribute, I assure you.

That said, I figured now was a good time to catalogue some of my most recent slight weirdness.

    Kicking off…

    1) I petted a tiny table in Spanish class Thursday.

    2) I drew a rat pancake on the blackboard in Spanish on Thursday.

    3) I rejoiced over the dramaticness of a scene my friend and I roleplayed.

    4) I recruited another friend to help me make a credible legend about my school (the fact that I need to bring in an outside source should serve as a testament to exactly how many crazy things I say there).

    5) I decided to give my school friend a sword.

    Just a little one. ;)

6), my crowning glory and the only thing in here really worth a status update:

How much is that dragon in the window?

The one with the firey breath?

How much is that dragon in the window?

I need him to burn you to deeeeaaaaath!

As a side note. I also received 21 tiny metal swords in the mail on Thursday that are GORGEOUS, and today my tiny stone jade-looking dragon arrived in the mail, which I christened Egypt. She is smol but she is wonderful. This needs a pic.

    Now I have eight dragons!

  4. Happy new year!

I went to a church dance and elected to devote the evening to scientific findings on the species of Homo Sapiens, or humans, as opposed to my own species and subspecies—evil author. I shall copy my notes here. Some few of them are about individual members of the species, but more muse on behaviors of the animals as a whole.

    • In the light, the dark-haired girls look like redheads. Very redheads.
    • There is an irritating gaggle of people blocking my vantage.
    • When a human is cut off from its pack, or has nobody to speak with, it must distract itself at all costs—a phone will do, or food, or a notebook (do not stoop to such. My writing it scientific findings, not a distraction. Let us be very clear on that point).
    • There is a girl in a wheelchair with a broken leg, who I see with a boy who is teasing her. Friend or date, I don’t know.
    • When this species gets together, they form a huge, shifting clump, effectively creating a ‘maze’ difficult to navigate.
    • Tragic how these creatures need songs written by those they don’t know to feel good about themselves. Can’t they tell they are already wonderful?

    • Somehow, the way they jump up and down with fists in the air makes even one like me wish to join them.
    • A large amount of males has congregated at the opposite wall for no apparent reason.
    • I shall now progress into field study.

    • Field study is exhausting. I shall prowl the perimeters of the room as an alternative.
•The knot in the center of the room is not the only place humans frequent. Not even most, possibly not even half, dance there. The others dance and chat in small groups.

    • As the night ages, the population of those who seek sustenance swell to unbelievable numbers.
    • Two boys did a flip--one over the other. I shall not theorize.
    • The boy has stolen her wheelchair.
•Approximately everyone thinks they’re weird, even if it’s simply subspecial traits manifest to by themselves. The only ones who can properly claim to be weird are the people who actually are. If you’re reading this, that’s probably you. Congratulations.

    • Boys like the halls…?

    • When viewed as a group, humans appear to be a single organism, a single mass… as opposed to separate, individual entities.

    • There is a most unusual force utilized to make any subspecies of author (perhaps reader also) to feel inferior when walking among humans, when, in fact, we are immeasurably superior to the animal in question.

    • Shyness is not a byproduct, but a precursor of a good dance.

That was fun. Really fun. Again, happy 2023!

…I’m glad I didn’t see this until now. Good notes, all of which seem accurate.

Capture the flag is much better than dancing, especially if there are swords involved.

We females are terrifying, guys are way funner to be around, especially when you can bench press more than they can. B)

I won’t rant about the school system and its effects on mental health. I have a google doc for that.

That being said, school is not always very flexible for people with outside circumstances causing stress, anxiety, or depression. In my experience with that kind of thing, I end up lacking almost any motivation for schoolwork or just general daily things, but I'll get pulled into some other project at the drop of a hat. Which of course leads to more stress.

If school is going to be the place where we must grow and be productive, you could make an argument for homeschooling in that it's good to have teachers and a learning setting that is linked with your life personally to allow for flexibility and better mental health.

At the same time, it is impossible for many families to be able to do that. Some families rely on school to be a place for their kids while the parents work. In my opinion, the best thing we can do for public schools is continue researching into the causes of stress and ways to change them, as well as ways to approach teen mental health in general. Of course, people are already doing that, but we really need to work on implementing it into schools.

I'll shy away from specific examples because I don't want to make myself out to be an expert. I think, though, that it really is going to take time to make those changes. For now, if you are struggling with those kinds of things, you should talk to a counselor if your school has one or a therapist if you think that could help.

Also, please tell me what you think of what I just said if you can. I know I probably said something stupid up there, so let me know.

      Hello.

      I'm late to the party.

I only have two finals because I go to a special Focus Program every day after the first two class periods of my normal high school.

At that Science Focus Program, we instead have "portfolios", which are big projects that show the accumulation of our knowledge over the class.

And these portfolios are due soon. And not all of them are done. And I have so much stuff to do and it's stressful and....

      Yeah.

(Now, time to go read what everyone else has posted!)

    4. Edema Rue

I’m also late to the party.
I am glad that we have education, but I think that in America especially, it just doesn’t fulfill its job. Language arts classes especially drive me crazy, though this might just be because I read too much. Still, I think that they shouldn’t be teaching high schoolers how to use a comma. All the freshmen are supposed to read Romeo and Juliet; instead, we watched the movies and compared them.
They seem to cater to the needs of the students that aren’t willing to put in any work themselves. This might be harsh, but after having to sit through classes that repeat the same thing they do every year, I’m just a little bit bugged by it. They should keep students up to a certain level, yes, but they also need to let other students go faster. Otherwise, there’s no point in giving up so much of your time just to sit around wasting said time.

Sorry, that was kind of harsh, and I am by no means an expert. This is just a subject that bothers me a lot. Contradict me as needed. :D

  7. Ahem. Good day, subjects. Today is a good day, for you see, I am perched on a lovely dragoney throne with embellishments of platinum. Expensive, yes, but nothing I can’t handle with the help of your taxes! Look how it shimmers in the light. Gorgeous.

Then I will go mad with power execute thousands of people, get executed, and replaced by a new government, which will be overthrown by a new government. Which will be turned into an empire.

That empire will take over most of the world, get overthrown, and then come back only to be overthrown by the original government.

    …how ‘bout no.

Also does anyone else sprinkle spices in their water sometimes?

”A dash of paprika.” Brushed it off palm “A little bit of lemon pepper… ah, yes, that’s about right. And to round it off, just a smidgeon of cinnamon sugar.” Sprinkles “Perfect! Now to drink it!” Examines mixture dubiously “Are you sure about this?” “Please, who are you going to trust?” Rather exasperated “The expert (me) or your own puny instincts?” Hesitates “Okay…” drinks it all, then repeats performance for absolutely nobody

Yep! That’s what I’ve been doing! Also still haven’t changed out of my pajamas!

  13. Well, Ookla season has begun.

As the more active of you may know, I have been setting up for a temporary tyrannical takeover, and it is time for it to come to light.

I wish I could have a beautiful custom made throne for this, but SOMEBODY asked me to extend the deadline, which I benevolently did, with minimal growling.

I am a very magnanimous tyrant.

Anyway, you’re all my subjects under my control, blah blah blah. Ookla the Obstinate/Ranryu is my cotyrant, and InfiniteInsanity is my advisor. Also, any oldest children have a higher chance of surviving this Ookla season.

  14. Greetings, everyone. I’ve escaped my confinement for long enough to wish you all a happy thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is a funny holiday. It gets sort of eclipsed by Halloween and Christmas, but lately it tends to sneak up on me, even though we’re shopping and cooking and stuff. It’s funny how often that seems to happen to me lately. I guess it’s an effect of getting older.

Anyway, I wanted to thank you all for being awesome people and all those amazing things. And once more, happy thanksgiving!

But I still don’t have WoK… or a finished rough draft of my own novel. It’s like 5% if even that. Scudding side projects.

  20. Okie I'm still not supposed to be here but I suspect that now that I've breached the line, Imma be posting status updates now and then :P

I wrote a short story! It's not perfect at all and I don't know how I feel about it but I enjoyed writing it a whole lot, so I'm putting it here. If you plagarize (whateverthestupidspellingGAH), I will find you 🙂

Also, I award you, @Immortal Platypus, three nice comic-style bombs and a stick of dynamite. And some marshmallows that won't steal your soul! Have fun! And no, I have no regrets on this point.

    Spoiler

In an age long forgotten, there hung a castle in the sky, suspended by stars. The palace used to be a beacon of hope, little more than a concept to bring to the world ideals, to give the world order and to show men honor when they looked to the skies. This palace was secured to the clouds by thirty strings, delicate as spiderweb, but hundreds of times as strong. Those gifted with the powers of darkness were chosen to watch over half of these strings, and those with light the other half, to keep the castle in the sky and preserve this shred of hope that the world could eventually become perfect.

Anciently, these two factions did not trust each other. Half stars reborn, half monsters given a second chance (so the legends said), one faction wished to control the others, though even they themselves never gave this desire a name, instead calling it suspicion or mistrust due to the nature of the darklings. Those who held the night in their hands were rarely powerful enough to fight back, instead retreating into mountains or fighting wars of ideas. These wars were ongoing, even at the time that these thirty guardians were chosen and given their wings, the better to protect and thicken their strings.

Each string was bonded to the heart of the guardian. As they sought to become better, and in turn to better their worlds through the ideals of the stars, the strings would strengthen. This, the spirits decided, was a perfect way. Surely those respected with such a sacred duty would never forget what they stood for. After all, half of them came from the stars, and the other half had in a previous life been pure enough to wish to change their very nature. Their task was the perfect way to do it. How could they not appreciate that?

This worked perfectly for exactly ten years. On the anniversary of the day the system had been implemented, a lightling called Elisa sought out the spirits and presented an argument. Creatures of darkness, she claimed, should not be trusted with such a task. Their very abilities marked them as evil by nature, something difficult to overcome even for the best of their kind. The spirits listened patiently but painfully as she listed the reasons she saw her people as deserving of the birthright, and the darklings as little more than peasants. Redeemed prisoners. As she spoke, her string began to melt, little by little, drop by drop. Gradually, the sustaining energy of the stars withdrew from the darkness she’d found in her heart.

She paused for breath, and the string snapped.

The spirits shuffled and muttered. There was more than one cry of despair. What went wrong, they asked each other? Where did she go wrong? What happened?

They forgot about Elisa, who, feeling the loss, flew to see her string. It had snapped, having become far thinner than it should have been. Aghast, she tried to fix it. “I was only doing what was right,” she cried to the stars. “You have chosen my people! You have given us your gifts, not the darklings. Have you forgotten that you favor us?”

She should not have spoken. Her wings, bestowed also of the stars, began to melt away. The stars did not wish her death, but they could not stop it. Her ideas were flawed. They were wrong, and they could not give their power unto one who had allowed her mind to become clouded with the ideas of men. If only she had understood. But, for Elisa, it was too late.

The spirits called the other 29 together, determined to find out what went wrong. They told the others what had happened to Elisa, and asked how they could prevent this in the future. Haedin, a darkling, stepped forward. “We need to realize, he said, that my people is just as good as their people, chosen of the stars or not.”

“But you are not chosen,” Tembri insisted, a lightling. “You are not chosen because you are not good enough. You are monsters. You must beg on your knees for a chance at redemption. We are fallen gods, here only to gather more power. Naturally, we are the more capable.”

“And Elisa? She was among the capable?”

“Elisa was a fool,” Tembri snapped. “She grew weak. The ideals state that our groups are equal and deserve our opportunities. Those are, however, ideals. Only rusty ideals. Her crime is speaking a truth that contradicts what the stars would have us believe.”

Haedin stiffened while Tembri went on.

“The stars are weak,” he said. “They are too merciful to those who don’t deserve it.”

Tembri’s string snapped. “He stumbled back, shocked. What did you do, Haedin?”

Haedin’s eyes flashed with anger. “I did nothing, you fool. You did it yourself. You called the stars weak. You contradicted the ideals. The truth.”

From there, the conference only escalated, and the influence of the spirits was not enough to calm thirty fiery angels. Some were angry because they were set equal with darklings. Darklings, they claimed, had no moral code. Darklings were monsters reborn. Darklings were abominations. They should all be killed. These arguments only escalated, and several darklings threw in retorts of their own. Lightlings were useless little pieces of divinity who had never done anything wrong in their lives, as if the darkling blood on their hands was nothing but mud from mere interactions with them. Lightlings destroyed everything they touched. Lightlings, full of privilege, full of superiority, made them sick. Lightlings were the ones that should be expunged.

    Snap. Snap. Snap.

But nobody seemed to care anymore. Now it was about winning. Winning, whether the castle crashed or not. Strings melted and snapped. Wings dripped onto the floor, coating it in a thin layer of wax. Most of the darklings stayed out of the confrontation, watching the proceedings with wide eyes, trying to calm everybody. But their strings alone were not enough. The castle creaked, tilted, stretched the remaining strings thin…

    …thin enough to snap.

The palace, symbol of ideals, fell. The spirits escaped. The twenty nine were not so lucky. The impact with the mountaintop killed most of them instantly, even the few who hadn’t noticed over their own shouting, not until the palace had flipped and crashed into the ground.

The towers were not crushed. The palace was built in the shape of a smooth trident, and the spires stabbed into the ground, fixing the palace and the island beneath it deep into the earth.

For years, people within eyeshot and earshot of the mountain where it fell spoke stories in hushed, nervous voices of the huge landmass that had fallen there. They knew nothing of the palace. It was no longer visible.

    A relic.

A relic of ideals and broken promises.

A relic of the past, of an angry people turned fiery and the passive not strong enough to hold up the world.

Ideals had fallen. Ideals had broken. And yet the stars had hope.

Perfection, after all, is not for man. These people had listened too much to the skeptics. In magnanimously descending to work with the others, they showed the world how good they could really be. But only out of pride.

This was not the way to return to the stars. This was the way to return to what they were before, back to waiting and learning until they were ready to try again.

The stars and the spirits spoke of the events. They found the inferrations made by these two nations quite interesting. Why would they send remorseful monsters to the earth with darkness when that was the very thing they were attempting to forsake? Why would they send stars, who already knew how to use light, to earth as lightlings? There was no progression there. No, the monsters were the lightlings, given light to learn to use it so they could come to the skies. The stars were sent with darkness, to learn to harness it so they could become something more. Light and dark together. That was progression.

No, the conquerors had been wrong.

No, the victims had been wrong.

Perhaps, with the truth, they would be able to find their ideals.

Then again, maybe truth, like ideals, would famously thud to the earth, the minders of it disillusioned and annoyed.

      GO GET THIS WEEKEND HALY!

  22. I've had Isadore fever all day so I finally wrote a scene with her where she revives a mostly dead boy. So here it is; I'm not going to keep it up forever but here it is for now.

    Spoiler

The ground sloshed underfoot, muddy and red, scattered with the dead and dying. Few were completely dead, at least so far. That would take time, hours at least..

Isadore inhaled deeply. She could almost taste the blood in the air, or at least she imagined she did. It was tinged with an almost metallic smell— a familiar metallic smell, fortunately. After all, Isadore would be far different without those experiences.

Maybe that wasn’t such a good thing.

She tapped into her Core, allowing her to see the spores of deep, rich green light from her view. She’d been deliberating about whether or not to use some of their Glow to see the souls of the dying, but it turned out to be unnecessary. The life forces were visible without it, abandoning their previous owners, blossoming from their chests into the night sky above. The misty souls were a beautiful shade of violet against the dark, starry sky. Isadore reached her hand through one. It continued its slow climb, not in the least disturbed by her presence. She moved on.

Ah, there he was. He’d fallen at the very beginning, before the fighting even started. Only a thin tendril of mist was coming off of him now, like the smoke from a candle just barely blown out. Soon all of his life force would be gone, moving on to who-knew-where.

She knelt next to him, her cape and dress suddenly cold, soaked through with mud. She didn’t care. She could just clean that off later— assuming she had any Glow left after that. She probably wouldn’t, but honestly, she didn’t care.

Isadore took a deep breath and reached out with her senses. This would either work or it wouldn’t. In preparation for today, she’d refrained from using the Glow for two weeks at least. She could feel motes of energy spread out for miles, her senses and power amplified by the full moon

    Would it be enough?

She flared her Charge, drawing the glowing motes toward her. The nearest ones settled on her skin, in line with a plain through the center of her chest. The others arranged themselves into rings like those encircling a planet, their radiance increasing just by virtue of being near each other. She closed her eyes. They were still there, but the way they were was impossible to describe. They felt like the energy of a lightning bolt when the volts became a part of the person in the seconds before that person was reduced to charcoal.

She wanted to draw them into herself, feel that feeling as more than just an impression. But such mistakes had destroyed mages greater than her. She had a job to do.

Mustering her strength, she drew every tiny mote of Glow toward her. She felt them streaking from every direction as far as her senses could reach to form rings around her, projecting around her a shell of raw power exploding into brilliant light. Her hold on it was slippery at best. But she didn’t need to hold it, at least not all of it. Gritting her teeth, she sent half of the light into the boy’s body and directed it to heal and mend and return to its prior state. The other half she held next to her as long as the healing process would allow. Sweat beaded on her forehead, pain blossomed in her abdomen. Afraid to breathe, in case that interrupted the delicate balance, she opened her eyes. The smoke of the boy’s life was…

It was gone. A wave of panic crashed through her— but there it was, in the sky, not quite gone. She sent the rest of her Glow up, and it obliged, glad to be doing something. It wrapped around the tendril of soul and rolled it up like a spool of thread. The mist strained against it, reaching for the sky, and whatever freedom lay beyond. Isadore yanked on her Glow, struggling against the celestial pull of the stars. At the same time, her Core cracked

She screamed, slapping her hands to the mud, clawing compulsively. But the soul in the stars above her finally gave, and the spool of magical energy, suddenly without resistance, spun faster than a top, collecting the misty soul, dragging it out of the sky.

Isadore, freed from the worst of it (though she had to keep constant pressure on both aspects of the Glow), closed her eyes and sucked in breath after breath. She felt lightheaded and about five seconds from blacking out, but she opened her eyes again anyway to transfer the soul back into the body.

She broke apart the motes of the magic spool, and before the soul could escape, used them to form a cocoon around it. She drew the cocoon toward her and toward the body. She lengthened it, then created a rope to twine around the soul. Then, finally she pushed it back into the boy’s chest.

Closing her eyes, she could feel both the magic and the soul, coiling in his chest like a snake until it was all inside. With a sigh of relief, she pulled at the remaining Glow (some had been used up in the process, but not all of it). But it wouldn’t come.

She frowned and tugged again. She hadn’t expected this. She could only hope it wouldn’t have any ill effects once she revived him. With a final puff of Glow, she started his heart and lungs.

He coughed, jerked up to sit, and coughed again. His eyes were panicked, Isadore noticed dimly. Panicked and green.

And then, to her utter humiliation, she slumped into oblivion.

Lethargy got a hold of me
And I don't know how to shake it
Got these itchy feet for a change of scene
    Do anything to escape it

There's an English man up in space these days
    Floating in awe and wonder
As he floats away from the atmospheres
    All of us non believers

Get up, get up, pressure, pressure
Run away as fast as you can go
    Everyday our friends and lovers
    Give the answers everybody knows

---All from Lethargy by Bastille (they just have too many good songs ok???)

Stories told to me and stories told to you
Did you ever feel like they were ringing true?

And all their words for glory
    Well they always sounded empty
When we're looking up for heaven
    Looking up for heaven
Way down here upon the ground
When we're lying in the dirt
There's no looking up for heaven
    Looking up for heaven

---Glory by Bastille (ok at this point I'm just copy pasting their songs so you should just go listen to them ok)

Don't you love it, don't you love it?

But soon we forgot to smile
    At anything else
