They looked like an Inkspren and Reacher pair, just scaled up. These would be the spren who'd grant access to the Surge of Transportation.

White Sand and Stormlight
Honorless replied to Hoid the Former Drifter's topic in Cosmere Discussion
@Hoid the Drifter, we don't know much about how Investiture distribution systems really work, only some very different examples of them, I imagine there's a bit more going on. On Scadrial, with the Heralds and with Odium, it's via direct link to the respective Shard(s), on Nalthis the Shard seems to act both passively and directly in different cases, Threnody is irradiated with Investiture, Sel's Investiture is in the wrong realm, Roshar's systems predate the Shards' arrival, First of the Sun's system is also probably older than Autonomy's Avatar. I don't think we can predict types & behaviours of Investiture from how they're distributed or vice-versa yet. Also, I don't know about reclaiming Investiture from the white sand lichen, as I pointed out, it's a miniscule amount, so I'm not sure it would be very useful. -

Nightwatcher Boon/Bane (Game)
Honorless replied to killersquirrel59's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Granted, the Nightwatcher hands over a strange metalmind to you. You can store and tap your happiness in that metalmind. Your bane is that she showed you that you can compound that metal to attain heavenly happiness but for a moment I wish for the ability to read minds -

Presenting a pretty intriguing theory from Krox, Collector and I, Owain over on Discord So, in RoW we got word that the microorganisms that live on the white sand particles can grow on other surfaces. Also a solid WoB: It's interesting for its implications on Roshar but it's entirely possible that we've already seen this phenomena happen on another Shardworld which is heavily Invested: Sel. After the Reod, the city of Elantris was covered in a slimy substance. A substance that was once alive and lived off the light... or Light of Elantris, of the Dor. ~ Elantris, Ch 34, courtesy of xnkvbo from over on Discord For those who haven't read White Sand, it's actually a type of lichen which lives on white sand particles that is actually responsible for the colour changes and forming temporary Bonds with Sand Masters in order to power Sand Mastery. It's kinda similar to how Aviar Bonds grant powers to their humans which they get from their Bond with parasites/symbiotes that they get by eating the fruits of Patji's Fingers by the Perpendicularity. The city of Elantris glowed as it's a giant Aon, with Investiture from the Dor flowing through it and these lichen fed off of it, enhancing its glow. This sounds very, very similar to how white sand is portrayed in the White Sand comics. It seems very possible that both are the same. Both White Sand and Elantris are early works of Brandon, so he might've been playing with the idea; he had already decided on a shared universe by then as well as worldhopping between them (Hoid).

White Sand and Stormlight
Honorless replied to Hoid the Former Drifter's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Recall back to the Kholinar mission in book 3, Kaladin couldn't use his powers without getting detected but Shallan could. Later on, when they enter Shadesmar with their limited supply of Stormlight, they notice that Lightweaving used far less Stormlight than Gravitation. Now recall the scene where Hoid's White Sand detected Shallan's Lightweaving. The black sand turned white just from proximity to Shallan's Lightweaving. On Taldain, in White Sand, it took black sand 4 hours to recharge and turn into white sand again. In RoW, Navani differentiates between Light and its radiation And Taldain's Investiture is distributed by sunlight. Which might mean it's not a gaseous form of Investiture like Stormlight is but Investiture radiation, like the light that everything connected to the Spiritual Realm gives off. Even disregarding that last part which is just my theory, OB pretty much confirms it. White Sand can contain much less Investiture compared to gemstones. So it's really not a good Investiture storage unit but it's a pretty great Invested Arts usage detector. -

Dread in Brandon's books, or lack thereof
Honorless replied to Honorless's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I feel like you're really devaluing the horror writing genre here. If the writing is just recounting the experience instead of trying to create an atmospheric feeling of dread & danger, isn't that a report rather than a novel? I feel like he doesn't really want to. I mean, look at the two books where atmospheric dread and mystery would've taken central stage if they were written by any other author: Elantris and Dawnshard. He paid a courtesy nod to the idea via the settings of the books but then delved with glee into demystifying the locations, in fact it's not just tonal but also thematic in these works. I mean, the idea of demystification fits with these novels really well and is central to them but I can't help but feel that lost potential. Shadows for Silence In The Forests of Hell did have a nice undertone of dread, though there wasn't really much focus on it, it focused more on the human elements, the characters and their actions' rising stakes rather than the environmental dread, but yeah, definitely better than the Re-Shephir sequence. Basically it had more narrative tension from the horror settings rather than feeling like a horror story. Skyward's actual Lovecraftian monsters are pretty solid though, hope there's more of that!- 18 replies

Caretaker of Laughter?

It's called the Red Rip, Starbelt and Taln's Scar on Scadrial, Threnody and Roshar, it's a bright patch of red stars visible from multiple Shardworlds. The redness can be a sign that those stars are astronomically old. Realmatically, red can be a sign of Corruption. There's something odd about that place, it's been mentioned too often to not be significant but we don't know anything more about it as far as I know.

I was just doing a casual reread of OB and looking over Shallan's sketches of Urithiru while it was occupied by Re-Shephir and realized this sequence might've been intended to evoke a sense of dread in the reader. A lot of the Unmade would've been pretty terrifying: Re-Shephir, Moelach, Ashertmarn... but they don't really invoke any emotion in me aside from curiosity. Is Brandon just bad at invoking a sense of looming dread, that mash of horror and mystery? Because I feel like when there's a more human aspect to the dread, he does it well: the fountain executions in Mistborn. What do y'all think?
