  1. Chapter 99 epigraph:
  2. This is not quite correct, to my understanding, though I could be wrong. The Beyond does not definitely exist (although people are free to believe it does, and many characters in-world believe that it does, and it does not definitely not exist either). However, the aspects do separate, and when the Cognitive passes... something weird appears to happen. But this could be going to the Beyond, it could be sort of "dissolving" and the Investiture returning to the Spiritual Realm, it could be something else entirely. But I'm not super on top of the WoBs on this subject, so feel free to correct me.
  3. Kaladin dying would be disappointing, when such a large part of his character has been learning to live despite his problems. Feels to me like a terrible way to end an arc about overcoming depression and suicide. "Life will get better one day, but then you'll die before you can finally enjoy it!"
  4. Adhesion does have Physical effects, though. It sticks things together, and is the Surge of pressure and vacuum (hence being able to mess with the storm, it alters the air pressure). It's mostly Spiritual when used by Bondsmiths, but Bondsmiths are... weird.
  5. What fundamental force is Transportation, or Abrasion, or Division? They're "fundamental" from a philosophical perspective, not necessarily a scientific one. And the powers spren grant vary based on perception of what is and isn't "fundamental".
  6. There are variations in the rhythms of the metals, but I don't believe a difference in tone was ever described, was it? Marsh describes three things to identify a metal: pulse length, metal group (pulse pattern), and "Push-Pull variance" (which is just it feels like it's either pushing against you or pulling you towards it). (TFE 20) Sounds like it. I imagine that's how this works (no idea what the "tweak" is, though):
  7. We do have this WoB on why he goes after diShardic worlds: There's also this WoB: My theory on it has been that perhaps Rayse was someone who did in the beginning make a binding Oath not to interfere with other Shards (or perhaps made a normal agreement but holds himself to it anyway; imo the whole "spirit of the deal" bit might be indicative of Rayse holding himself to his word more strictly than some). However, Odium the Shard eventually pushed him to move against the others. To get around breaking this deal, he attacks diShardic worlds, because he can argue that they are breaking the rules and forfeit the protection of the agreement. Edit: On "we killed you" — I think it means the Fused or Unmade or something, most likely, as I bet he managed to use them to get Honor to Invest enough of himself to be weakened. Alternatively, he managed to use them to manipulate Tanavast into breaking an Oath, opening Honor up to attack.
  8. This subforum allows untagged Cosmere spoilers (though the other RoW spoiler subforums require tagging).
  9. Something to note: we see seon bonds in Elantris. Sarene is bonded to Ashe and Raoden to Ien (which is why Ien is affected by Raoden being taken by the Shaod). We have no idea what the bonds do, though.
  10. A very important line to note from Secret History (chapter 3.1):
  11. I think the context of the question that this was in response to, which was asking why it can fuel things directly contrary to its Intent, is relevant, and explains more why I think the WoB says what it does. Depending on how the Fused got their powers, I don't see this as particularly suspicious. The fact there was no Bondsmith prior to the end of Words of Radiance does not mean Bondsmiths can no longer be made. The fact Odium has not made a specific type of Fused does not to me indicate there is anything (especially not anything with their Intents) preventing him from doing so. I explained my view in an earlier post of mine, but there's a lot of posts in that thread, so I'll repost it here:
  12. The WoB that's been referenced a couple times here, just so people who stumble on the thread don't have to dig for it:
  13. Questioner asks why Allomancy has so many destructive effects, Brandon says Shards can fuel any interactions, not just those based on their Intent as an answer. How is that not what it says? I disagree that we have seen Odium cannot grant Adhesion. We have not seem him do so, and have been told by somebody who clearly does not have a complete understanding about this topic (as displayed by thinking that Honor and Cultivation invented the things culture associates with the Surges, like gravity) that he can't. However, I feel there is a perfectly adequate alternative explanation that fits better with what we have been told about the way magics work. I do not feel the creation of the Surges and Surgebinding is as intentional by Honor and Cultivation as you are saying. We know the Surges of Surgebinding are in no small part due to perception, and so Earth for example would have different Surges granted if it had Nahel-capable spren. We also know that there were "seeds" that led to this perception, but considering how much of Roshar has been set up by Adonalsium (including the entire system itself), I would hesitate to attribute that to H&C, and would find it more likely it was Adonalsium who did so. As such, I do not think they made any choices here, I think it's the same way the Metallic Arts have their weird effects mostly unrelated to the Shards behind them. Edit: Sorry, am a bit tired, so this is sorta rambly.
  14. To quote this WoB again: The effects of a magic system are not limited by a Shard's Intent. Should Division not be very contrary to Honor's Intent? And yet, Radiants get it, and not just Radiants, but one of the orders that would seem to be closest to Honor.
  15. Oops, my bad. Should've paid more attention to usernames It's more that it draws on the power that the metal itself is made of. It's not like it draws extra Ruin in from the Spiritual, the way normal Allomancy does with Preservation. If that's the case, then either Odium shouldn't be able to grant Progression (which he can), or not being able to grant Adhesion doesn't fit. Should that not apply to the other nine Surges too, if they're of just H&C?
  16. They do, but you said "This wouldn’t be the first instance of certain abilities being limited to a particular Shard", so I was wondering what the other magic system effect limited to one Shard you were taking as precedent was. And the Fused understanding of Surges is... somewhat flawed. Such as suggesting that Honor and Cultivation invented gravity. While the Sibling does back up Adhesion being pretty heavily Honor, I don't trust that Odium can't actually grant it, and more specifically I don't trust that the Fused have any idea what they're talking about on this topic. Instead, I think that Odium was scared of the potential a Fused with power over Connection could have (for example, could they maybe break their dependence on him and Connect to a different source of power?), and so he pretended he couldn't do it, using its association with Honor as an excuse. And the Fused, not knowing the deep mechanics of how this works, bought it, and bonus points, it made them even saltier towards Honor than they were before! (And if a Surge was of Honor and Cultivation only, I don't see why that would let Odium use it any more than one of Honor only.)
  17. Why not say Gravitation for that, or something like Cohesion or Tension that acts directly upon bonds? And why doesn't Cultivation have anything similar? Why can Honor grant Division, which seems directly opposed to him? And perhaps most importantly, why does the Nightwatcher grant Adhesion, when she should be pretty much the most Cultivationy spren we have? Also: If Preservation could "fuel" Hemalurgy, I see no reason Odium could not grant Adhesion. I don't recall any examples of this, which are you talking about?
  18. The Metallic Arts were not "created": Sixteen was already the number of metals (SH 1.2), which is why he chose it for his "sign" (probably the mists Snapping atium Mistings?): Glys is red.
  19. Possibly, but Dalinar did end up essentially come up with a new contract from the one Hoid suggested, and when Odium goes over the final terms, he did not list that as part of it.
  20. Few WoBs I feel are relevant. One, this WoB that I assume Frustration is referring to, Voidbinding usually but not always originates with the Unmade: Second, Voidbinding has in the past been looked into somewhat but not fully explored: Lastly, Voidbinding is not exactly using SL to fuel a different set of abilities, but is close (and Renarin is very relevant): I unfortunately have not managed to draw any good conclusions from these, but they seem relevant, so I figured I'd note them.
  21. Could be. Would also provide another alternate explanation for why there's no Adhesion Fused, as well (I simply do not believe Odium truly is incapable of granting it, because it goes against everything else we've been told about how granting powers works). If so, perhaps if they died with those bonds still active, the separation of spren and singer spiritwebs left a temporary gap Odium was able to fill in, if he acted quickly enough?
  22. Thanks! Used GIMP for the editing. Font is Tresillian Script (screenshotted from the "Enter your own text" box because I'm not spending $65 for the sake of these covers ). I think the actual tWoKP cover uses the Bold variant, but I used the Medium variant because I wasn't certain which of the two was used.
  23. Imo, the cause-and-effect there is the other way around. I think the reason Braize is nine-centric is because its inhabitants, the Fused, only believe in nine fundamental Surges.
