  1. They'd be worse. Guaranteed. Brandon has said more than once that he writes other projects so that he doesn't burn out. The first Alcatraz book was written because Brandon was getting sick of writing the Mistborn trilogy. He does it to unwind.
  2. He has been writing more than one book per year. But there are also side projects that he works in that we have to account for as well, such as Rithmatist and Steelheart.
  3. What a waste it would be for Brandon to spend ten years of his career writing a story that "sounds a lot like other massive sagas". If you want an awesome war epic, with blacksmiths and saviors of the world, the Wheel of Time executes that story wonderfully. Why would we want another one of those, instead of the epicness that Brandon has planned. We've only started to glimpse the full story of the cosmere, and I'm sure it's going to get more and more awesome as time goes on, not to mention all of the awesome series that will comprise the cosmere epic. I want the later two mistborn trilogies, The Stormlight Archive, and Dragonsteel. The Stormlight Archive probably isn't going to see it's conclusion until about 2026, by the calendar that Brandon's given us. That's 13 more years at the least. And after that's all said and done, there are still another 17 or so cosmere books that Brandon still plans to write. Assuming one a year, we're now to 2043 by the time we see the end of the cosmere if Brandon doesn't expand beyond what he's got planned (which he tends to do). Not to say that it wouldn't be an interesting read, but I want to see what Brandon has in mind to advance his stories, not go back and expand a story that we already have a pretty good understanding of. Do you really want Brandon to spend ten years writing a prequel series?
  4. I really hope that Brandon doesn't go back and do that. I'd rather see him spend his time writing new material, not expanding the backstory of Alendi. I don't know about you, but I want Stormlight and the later Mistborn trilogies. And ten books about Alendi? I don't want Brandon's releases for TEN YEARS to be about him. I don't care about him that much. He got plenty of backstory during the Mistborn trilogy. A short story, maybe, but anything more than that would be a waste.
  5. Don't assume what I am or am not forgetting. I know full well that he can increase his weight, but increasing by that much would trash his reserves if he did it for every shot. And as you seem to have ignored: Wax can add his steelpush to a bullet shot out of a gun. So yes, he could probably get a bullet going at fired speed on his own, but how fast could he get one going if it was fired before he started steelpushing it? Also, increased aiming ability, and ability to fire off multiple shots in rapid succession. Assume he's got two six-shot revolvers. That's twelve shots that he just has to point and pull the trigger on. With coins, you have to push a single coin after lining up your shot, or just push your entire handful, as was more common for battle use during the first series. Vin almost always tossed a handful at someone, then pushed on it. I assume that means that it's much less accurate than a pistol, and is more comparable to a shotgun.
  6. How fast can you throw a rock, compared to how fast a fired bullet travels? I know, it's not a very accurate comparison, but I don't really want to figure out how fast a bullet would travel with 180 lbs of force applied to it. But I'm fairly sure that It's slower than it would be fired out of a gun. Also, with a fired bullet, Wax can apply additional force to it as it travels, making it impact even harder. Gunpowder + SteelPushing = AWESOME.
  7. I'd be fine with including SOME acronyms, such as book titles (TFE, WoA, HoA, WoK, WoR, TES), but other than those, I feel like acronyms are unnecessary. Also, they lead to more and more confusion as we get new people who everyone just assumes that they get our acronyms. If you've got a term you're planning to use heavily in a post, such as faster than light, the first time you use it, type it as Faster Than Light (FTL), then use it going forward in your post. As for frequently proposed theories, I don't feel like theories have ANY place in our FAQ's, as they are to be a knowledge source for new members or those wanting a reminder of what we know. I don't want them turning into a list of supposition, unless I see good arguments that change my mind.
  8. I considered it, but decided against it for a few reasons. First and foremost, there are things that Brandon asks us to edit out of pretty much every single signing audio (mostly personal conversations between Brandon and people in line). Out of respect to his wishes, we don't just post the raw audio.
  9. I too can confirm that it is true, having heard it with mine own ears. The recording, on the other hand... I don't really want to go diving through over 48 hours of raw audio to find a 30 second audio clip. Also, as for uploading the raw audio files to the server and putting a link into the wild? Our servers couldn't handle that. We have to keep a close eye on them when we upload a new ShardCast, and even then we sometimes see downtime. It's just not a good idea.
  10. I noticed. I also noticed that you tweeted us. If you want to ask Brandon, he'll be doing an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit on the 15th of this month. No guarantee that he'll answer, but it's worth a shot.
  11. It's a very difficult question to answer, and it really isn't a good benchmark. He wrote a book called "The Way of Kings" (he now refers to it as Way of Kings Prime) before Elantris was published which was much shorter than it is now (it was about 306K words vs over 380K). He then spent the next eight years doing worldbuilding and editing. The first reference to a rewrite I can find on his blog is in May of 09. He then finished his rewrite two months later, so I'm not sure if it really only took him that long. He's good, but rewriting that much in two months with Sundays off is 7300 words per day. Also, with the rewrite, there was a major change to the plot regarding a choice Kaladin made before the story began, so his plot was VERY different in PRIME. Plus what Flash said... It's a really tough question. If Peter gets on, he'll have a better answer. http://brandonsanderson.com/blog/784/Another-Long-Winded-Explanation-of-Various-Things http://brandonsanderson.com/blog/803/DONE?m=1&y=2009&d=4
  12. You might hate to say it, but I'm really disappointed that there's not going to be a midnight release. :/ there's a signing day of, but it's just not the same. I wonder why they've decided to not have one.

Oh, we do. But it's a secret handy list.
  14. We're planning on doing one, but we're going to be starting it a little closer to WoR's release.
  15. No problem. As for the double post, don't worry about it. We just do it to keep things clean. Also, welcome to the site!
  16. One that you should definitely go for is Brandon's Mistborn trilogy. It's an awesome series, plus it's all out. As for Wheel of Time, I'd say definitely. I got discouraged a few times while I was reading the first book, but then I got the audiobooks and loved them. Plus, you're getting into it at the right time. You'll never have to wait for a book, which I'll admit, I'm kind of jealous of.
  17. Today, Tor.com put up the tour listing for The Rithmatist. All of the places that Brandon will be going to for this tour are places that he didn't get to during the AMoL tour, so if he didn't make it to a bookstore near you, you should definitely take a look at this tour! Here are the tour dates: Tuesday, May 14, 6-8 PM Books of Wonder New York, NY Wednesday, May 15, 7 PM Children’s Book World Haverford, PA Thursday, May 16, 7 PM Tattered Cover (Highlands Ranch) Denver, Colorado Friday, May 17, 7 PM Barnes and Noble (Oakview Mall) Omaha, NE Saturday, May 18, 1-3 PM Maple Street Book Shop New Orleans, LA Monday, May 20, 7 PM Blue Willow Houston, TX Tuesday, May 21, time to be determined Hicklebees (Note: This event may be moved off-site. There is also talk that Brandon may be touring in the UK sometime this November, but details aren't set. The original blog post is located here. If you'd like to read an excerpt from The Rithmatist, you can find one here.
  18. The cosmere is the name of the universe that all of the cosmere books take place in, not the name of the galaxy that all the planets are in. We don't have a name for that yet. It is, however, a "compact dwarf galaxy" that all of the action takes place in. Brandon has said that Earth does not exist in that universe.
  19. Also, as note, I'm aware of how awful the mobile version of the site is now. Text the same color as the background, tiny text entry blocks, oh, and the full version button does NOTHING. I'm sorry in advance to anyone who gets stuck on the mobile site in the meantime. It's a work in progress, though. Pardon our dust and all that. I really should be going to bed soon... But I figured I should put these notes somewhere I could find them once I woke up. Night amigos!
  20. It IS Hoid. Brandon HAS confirmed this at a signing.
  21. Hey everyone! As I'm sure you can tell, the site has been upgraded. Whether it's successful or not, I don't know that yet (I'm writing this at 4:30 Wednesday, about 6.5 hours before we plan to start the upgrade). Anyway, I just wanted to put up a thread asking what you all think. I know it's going to be a little bit different, but we're pleased with what we've done, and we think you're all going to like it too. Also, there's a guide on the front page (which I'll be writing once I'm done with this post) that will give you a basic tour around the site, and help show you where the things that you know and love have been moved to. If it's missing something (it probably will be) post in here, and I'll do my best to get back to you as fast as I can. Thanks so much for all of your understanding with the change, and welcome to 17thShard 3! Edit: It's now just about 7am. We're finally wrapping up. We may have botched a couple things that have made it so that we've lost a feature or two (The Gallery and the Awards system come to mind), but we'll be getting those reinstated in the next couple days. Sorry about the prolonged downtime (It only took us twice what we expected, no big deal), and we hope you enjoy!
  22. All of these RPs are dead. Either that, or they're VERY inactive. One way or the other, we're more than willing to unlock them and put them back out into the main RP board. Just post a message here in this topic, and send me a PM, and we'll get it put back. Please only do so if you're intending to keep it active, and keep it running. Otherwise, it'll just get brought back to the graveyard.
  23. I'm really sorry that you feel that way, but I'm more than a little put off by how it seems that you've already decided that you're not going to like what we've been putting a lot of hard work into. I love the current site too, but it's getting old, and things are breaking that we just can't fix anymore. I get it, change can be a little scary, but we're loving how it's looking, and we think everyone else will too. Yes, it's going to be a little different and everyone's going to need to adapt a little bit, but it's also getting awesome new features, which are looking gorgeous. I know that we can't satisfy everybody, but I think we're making awesome improvements, and we're really proud of it. Thanks for the go ahead, and your understanding, but we were planning on doing it anyway.
  24. Ferrings only started showing up after the Terris people who survived the Final Ascension started interbreeding with the other survivors which diluted the power. Mostly true, but technically false. Edit: Okay, I was a little bit wrong. There were some before, but they were very rare. Relevant Link
  25. It is Hoid.
