Threnody's forests are empty of animal life because the Shades enforce the Simple Rules towards animals, too. That explains why the forests are so empty. But it opens up another question: Where are the Shades of all those animals? All Shades we see are human or so old that you cannot tell. But why do they assume that they were all human? The people in the forests ride horses and keep animals. There must be animals falling victims to Shades even today. We have one clue. Old Shades dissipate. If they totally dissolve due to old age, we can assume that animal Shades last a lot less long or even don't form in the first places. Why? The obvious explanation would be that they start out with less investiture. That means that the creation and upkeep of Shades is powered by the users and that investiture is continously lost. I think we have found an end-negative system. Does that proof that the killing and repelling of Shades with silver is also powered by the victims, that is the Shades? Strictly speaking, no. But if you assume otherwise the same result would have to be achieved in two different ways.

[OB] Kaladin & Jasnah: the case for Political Marriage
Oltux72 replied to ZenBossanova's topic in Stormlight Archive
The Alethi troops , however, are Vorin. On can make a case that killing Heralds, if you want to rule Vorin peoples, is not a good idea. Genocide, however, is the only sure alternative. Jasnah will not drop that option. And it is clear to her that just to preserve unity among her people, alternatives will have to be looked at. Jasnah also knows that the Knights Radiant of old had more options than they have today. And they did not face an Everstorm. So I dare say Jasnah is not optimistic. That makes her a realist in contrast to Kaladin. He has plans which may or may not work. Somebody will have to prepare for the bad case. And that will be Jasnah. -
And they keep listening to Dalinar because they are convinced of his wisdom? The wisom of a man who has just lost a kingdom? Who cannot even keep his own armies loyal to himself? Who has been so undiplomatic that he has been declared a heretic? Alethkar, an occupied country, taking over the world? Well, if that were so, that is one more reason for them to jump ship and increases the need to secure the alliance.

If the Fused did not go for Kaladin's family, we would have to ask for a reason. Gathering intelligence and attacking opponents at weak points should be a priority. -
[OB] Kaladin & Jasnah: the case for Political Marriage
Oltux72 replied to ZenBossanova's topic in Stormlight Archive
She doesn't. Most people will. She knows that. Everybody knows it. Yes, killing the Heralds is rational as well as outrageous. That is indeed the crux. Time is against them. They can try to befriend the Parshendi. This may or may not work. They can try to stop the posession. Would the old Knights Radiant have tried that? Likely. They failed. Jasnah cannot expect to succeed. So the ultimate fact remains. No Parshendi, no Fused. Genocide is the only sure answer. She is the opposite of a rabid dog. She is a rational potential mass murderer. Kaladin opposed her. That opposition, however, was based on emotion and a certain moral view point. If you take the position that mankind on Roshar must be saved, you cannot rule out genocide. Jasnah is ready to think things through and act on the results. Rather courageous actually. Sometimes there is no good answer. Jasnah is ready to face up to that truth. Kaladin is not. I suspect Dalinar would kill them all if he had to. These are two different question: Is Jasnah right? What does her reaction to her own convictions tell about her? -
[OB] Kaladin & Jasnah: the case for Political Marriage
Oltux72 replied to ZenBossanova's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well, she proposed something like assasinating the pope or nuking Mecca. An emotional reaction is to be expected. And she she wants to demonstrate that Kaladin has no plan. When they were discussing fighting back, Kaladin mentioned that ordinary Parshmen are not the enemy. Why would he say so if he not understood that Jasnah wanted to kill them? Jasnah could have just corrected a misunderstanding. And once the Heralds are dead, how long will they stay on Damnation? And the Oath Pact will be even weaker next time. And killing them again will be harder. No, I am sorry. Jasnah's aim here is to gain a temporary advantage and to use it. While the Fused cannot return any longer, she wants to exterminate all Parshmen. Genocide is very much on the table. They all understand the implications. -
The only way the Rosharans have to get Investiture into a solid object is Stormlight into gems. The protectors would glow. Furthermore if they could do that to metal, they would make armor out of it. Aluminium has the same problem. Look at the effort they go to to make Half Shards. If they knew that aluminium can block shard plates they would make shields and armor out of it. Hence aluminium would be really logically inconsistent. We have the following requirements: Mitigate the effects of a Shard Blade (if it cuts you, acceptable as long as you do not end up with a blade-dead limb) Be reasonably flexible and not too brittle Not a material to make armor or shields of Feasible with low technology Silver fits these requirements. Granted, that is no proof. Yet withering operates on the soul: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/76-shadows-of-self-chicago-signing/#e6374 Blades cut your soul. A bit more radical. But basically similar.

The timing makes sense, but the implicit assumption is that the Evil was Ambition's death or immediately caused by it. Is there evidence for that? I would say there isn't. For all we know they tried something with Shades and it went horribly wrong. Catastrophies leading to devastation on a planetary scale are not unheared of in the Cosmere.

Somebody who has an army to offer or secures an alliance. And if the monarch of Alethkar wants to be seen as independent from house Kholin, not someone loyal to that house. Hence somebody from Thaylen or Jah Keved, if you insist on Vorin, as may be prudent.. Actually if you really want to go hardcore: Taravangian
-
OK, there are those training protectors you can put on a shard blade to make it safer to handle. They are not aluminium. Half Shards are too new. Silver, however, prevents withering from Shades. Are the protectors made from silver? We got WoB that the processes are similar.

Silver: the useless metal... or is it?
Oltux72 replied to Vargo Seldon's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Why then does silver by itself without a user work? -
Still, he could have desired to become a Truthwatcher. So why a Cryptic? Aren't Cryptics rarer?

Silver: the useless metal... or is it?

It looks like silver will serve as a focus but lacks Investiture. You need to touch the shadow. It looks like the fuel comes out of the shadow. -

The Final Surges: Division, Cohesion, and Tension (and Unity?)
Oltux72 replied to Pagerunner's topic in Stormlight Archive
If that were the case, division wouldn't work in vacuum or in an atmosphere of nobel gases. Now we cannot rule it out, but that looks strange. The burning really is a side effect of breaking the bonds and generating so many free radicals. You should also smell ozone. -
Seekers are sad cases. Given the cost of their fuel they will never get to use their power.
-
No. An attacker using atium would almost certainly also burn copper.

What is the temporal relation? Had Threnody recovered or net yet suffered the catastrophe at the time of Kelsier's death? Also what happens to your soul if you become a shadow? And if the shadow subsequently dissolves? Does your soul blow away?
-
We are seeing it fairly consistently. The additional matter used in restoring lost tissue or create tissue by the surge of regrowth or feruchemically healing has to come from somewhere.

That does not tell us why a change of the remote effective mass changes acceleration. Something like this would: formel.pdf F_{1}=F_{0} over 2 + {a_{1}} over {2( a1 + a2 )}
