  1. Where would the benefit be? A shard is not better at making a bow than an ordinary bow. In fact, it would suck. A bow has to bend. It seems to me that if you wanted a ranged shard weapon, you'd need to go for a larger weapon to get a decent mass. So a shard javelin powered by an atlatl. It would solve the classical issue of all distance weapons. You could not run out of ammo, as the projectile can dematerialise and return to the wielder.
  2. How long is Taldaine settled? Human populations generally adapt quite fast to the level of UV light they are exposed to. In adition to the obvious disadvantage of damage by a lack of pigmentation, there is also the reverse effect a deficiency in vitamin D leads indirectly to dangerous child birth. http://www.victorianweb.org/science/health/health6.html
  3. Have we seen shades or their magic anywhere else? I would speculate that silver is kind of a "passive" allomantic metal. You can get it to do things if you provide an external source of investiture, the shade or its magic effect.
  4. That still leaves Azure, who would have had to surpress her aura in a serious fight against the palace guards.
  5. There is a sun. It is a white dwarf, which is extremely potent in the UV. It is not very bright though. The dayside sun is cooler, though brighter. They have an incentive to develop a protection against UV rays that does not involve heating you up by absorption.
  6. Neither are they seen around Azure, who must have the breath needed to awaken several cloth figures she formed on the deck. And the watcher in the light house asked at which heightening Kaladin is. Nor does the effect show around Hoid, who has gotten perfect pitch back, hence at least second heightening Do we have any indication the enhanced colors are visible to people without breath?
  7. Well the first oath is broad, but it has some meaning it should be incompatible with: suicidal tendencies - it does not rule out sacrificing yourself for something, but an outright wish to die clashes with "life before death" nihilism - the journey has to matter being a serial killer - life before death pacifism - strength before weakness, self defense is implied in the oath working as a contract killer - life before death
  8. Presumably the process of making you an aluminium misting would block itself, as the mists are also investiture, so you'd burn your own changing power away.
  9. Wax shooting his wife ... again.
  10. The side of classical Vorinism now appears to be House Sadeas. I am sure we will see two version of the battle of Thaylen Field, which differ on who attacked whom. The Thrill used to be on the Alethi side. Declaring it an enemy will not just convince everybody or even a majority. The new Radiants are betraying Alethkar again.
  11. That still leaves good old bribery and taking them from prisoners of war. I am afraid aethers would work much better a small rewrite to make them harder to transfer. That is a good explanation in case of native wives. It fails with foreigners though. They would have all incentive to phone home. Nobody of Amberite at all? They are important houses. No different from awakened objects except for the light and heat. And with enough Breaths awakened objects can create magic effects. Or the Returned. Aethers are not that different. They are physical objects but other than that, how are they different from spren or aviars? The Dari show something entirely new and the Bestarin show a novel concept. From a tactical viewpoint, if you wanted to create a whole planet of invested people out of ordinary people, you'd have to go for aethers (or Ashyn magics). And if you wanted a base in Shadesmar, you could live of Verdant soup and cross it on Corpates. And Dark Amberite versus Shard plate and blades is a match I want to see.
  12. If the priests ever had to fake descent due to a fatality, with a king they could invent a posthumous child. WIth a queen they'd be out of luck. Also the process of getting an heir, if they need to get one right now can be quick. WIth a queen, it will take months.
  13. The system of the aethers right now has some issues The peoples outside the Empire have a large incentive to obtain aethers. Why does it take so long? They marry outside their lineages. Now suppose an Amberite man marries a woman of another lineage. Her children happen not to be his children, if you know what I mean. Yet they bond Amberite without problems. You think nobody will notice? Nobody with Amberite or Bestarin will ever be picked by Vo-Dari. Nobody notices. Over decades? I don't really see how explanations in terms of Realmatics would help. The people of that world do not have such knowledge. Nor are they that unique. If Rosharans can grow crystals, aether can let you grow metal.
  14. Spice triggers receptors, but it causes no damage. It creates an illusion. And Hoid has absolutely no problem with illusions.
  15. I gam pretty sure they would also try alloys. And coatings. We are talking about a woman who puts the numbers of time per week of having sex into a contract. Inconclusive. It is extra embarrasing if the illegitimate daughter is more powerful than the legitimate daughter. That raises a point. Specific allomancers may move to specific cities for some reason. But this is getting interesting. The people of Northern Scadrial being aristocrats should study the inheritance of allomancy. It seems to me if there are allomancers of unavailable metals anomalies should show in the data. IIRC Vin reports that all other reserves were gone. Nevertheless you could get a leecher to leech them for testing.
  16. Isn't picking up a shard somewhere between intentionally inflichting brain damage on yourself and suicide? Ati effectively was not himself anymore.
  17. That is an answer, but it requires him to remain an allomancer and feruchemist of atium. Hence that would mean there are two generations of metallic arts.
  18. Is it needed at all? If you must keep it, how about Devotion and Dominion settling on the workd if the aethers first and fleeing from Odium? The aethers cannot be fully explained or the plot with multiple aethers being possible and this being kept from the general population will stop making sense. Yes, this really makes no sense. If you really need the air of despair, introduce the second army of shadows right away (Bestarin and Amberite advancing in two groups?) and make the defeat of the first army a pyrrhic victory. The plot of the succession can work without the element of mistaken identity. The conflict can come from the heir leaving the priesthood which is not suppposed to happen, because the third son was supposed to become a priest, not the second son..
  19. That of course raises the question of what happened to the existing Atium mistings. And if there is no more Atium, how has Silvereyes avoided death by old age? And are there misting for Ettmetal? It is possible that swallowing it would cause you to explode, but does that mean that there are no mistings for it? Its alloys? And why were no malatium mistings created, when the mists made mistings? And if you are an atium misting, are you actually an atium misting or a misting of god metals and their alloys?
  20. Steris is honest and rational. She might well for the reasons you gave hide being a gnat in public, but she would mention it in negotiations about a marriage, as it affects the prospective heirs. I think, and I am not alone in that, that she is an atium misting.
  21. If you are standing on a terrestial planet, there is a metallic core with a diameter of thousands of kilometers a few thousand kilometers below your feet. You would see one gigantic blue line with enough range.
  22. Why would you want to? Go the whole way. Build a shard machine gun with teleported bullets.
  23. Would somebody dare to follow Amram's example?
  24. The Monks of Baz-Kor IIRC. Though now that I think about it, hazekillers must have martial arts training.
  25. Immortality not mentioned? I am surprised. I agree. The question is, not being in Elantris, where could I use it? And do I need to rediscover all Aons?
