  1. I kind of like that idea but there are questions: Wouldn't that mean that the "visible appearance" of spren would slow down in the span between highstorms (most during the highstorm, the fewest near to the next highstorm)? Or they can hold stormlight better than gems, which would run out of Stormlight within a week? Wouldn't there be more spren visible in a room that is well-lit by spheres than by candles? Anyways wouldn't there be much more visible spren on the Shattered Plains (which are nearest to the "origin of the highstorms") than in the western regions of Roshar (save for Shinovar)? But I stick with your idea. Possible solution: Spren need a certain amount of Stormlight around that is permanently reached everywhere on Roshar but (mostly) not in Shinovar. I don't know in mind: Are spren captured in every soulcaster('s gems; aside from the fake soulcasters ). From Navani's notebook, so it would seem. It seems to me that the "action" burns up the Stormlight rather then the imprisoned spren or the user, but it might be that the spren channels the power of the stormlight to make that "action" work.
  2. . (interruption, leading Brandon to lose his train of thought) . Brandon: So what we are dealing with here is that all Spren are indeed all pieces of the one who has gone, so those spren are all- except the Windrunner spren, the spren like Syl, have certain umm.Zas: Nohaden mentioned that “All the spren aren’t as discerning as Honorspren.” . Brandon: So there has been dissention among them about who gets to call themselves Honorspren, if that makes sense, and there is some disagreement among scholars about which ones are really, you know “This is what defines an (honorspren?)". But the spren you are running into are all (something) of either Honor or Cultivation, or some mixture between them. And you can usually tell the ones that are more Honor, and the ones that are more Cultivation. That should be able to be (something). . So it appears that spren, whether they are acting spren or just manifesting spren, are all of Honor or Cultivation. Though, perhaps some notable spren, which will be seen by Dalinar in WoR, have been corrupted by Odium. It also appears that the spren communicate and debate with one another (factions?). It also seems that honorspren is not a cut and dry designation and several varying types of spren see themselves as 'honorspren' in contrast to other spren. I think this weakens the idea that there is an absolute standard (at least functionally for spren bonding) for what 'honor' means (The italized part I included hoping it fits; the bolded parts are for markings.) I've added the beginning of that question to the quote within the quote. Brandon said that the spren "you are running into" (you == the readers/listeners? I can't see others that may "run into spren" and are addressed by BS that way). That leaves a vacant space for possible "Odium-spren" to fit in. I'd say Nohadon defines an honorspren similar to our ideas (spren binding to honorable persons, to make a very raw description). But there had been other spren, able to "Nahel-bond" that hadn't been so discerning with choosing their "partner" like said honorspren (for example binding to Yelig-Nar (kind of a foe) or Alakavesh (who went astray when fighting other kingdoms instead of preparing to be ready for Desolations). PS @ Shardlet Between the multiquote-butto and the edit-button is one called "hide". You can use it to "hide" double-postings or ones you want to disappear. They will not be deleted but only visible for the admins/mods then.
  3. I don't agree because we have no evidence that there really is no Stormlight in Shinovar: At least I think that the Shin surely know Stormlight but because of Shinovar being sheltered by that mountains the can't get much benefit from highstorms. May be the Stormlight carried by highstorms only on rare occasions "sweeps" over that mountains. Another possibility to gain Stormlight might be infused spheres or gemstones through trading. But then, Thresh said: I, personally, think that there is a small amount of Stormlight in Shinvoar too and thus it's revered and not in daily, "profane" use. And there might be no or only a few spren in Shinovar. Do we know (WoB) whether there are really no spren in Shinovar while we know on the other side that "there are spren everywhere around on Roshar" but they aren't always mentioned (some theorized that Dalinar might have attracted on but doesn't give it a heed).
  4. I'd like to add that neither kind of spren are capitalized in TWoK. It's us doing this, but it's not "given from the source" (TWoK). (Also I'd like to admit that this disturbs me kind of, I'd have capitalized them, but as BS didn't ...) edit: adding: I daresay that "honorspren" are not called so because they are "of honor" but because the are attracted by honar(able behaviour).
  5. Thank you very much for your helpful answer. Aside from the fact that she didn't "fight off deathspren ... during the highstorm." She were there and she seemed to try to protect him but there were no deathspren during the highstorm (at least not mentioned and I believe they were not mentioned because there had none been). The deathspren-scene comes later, when Kal recovers from his injuries. But that was not my topic. That there can be kind of an exchange can be read in TWoK.
  6. Thanks, I saw this but it's not really the same subject. Hasn't there been WoB (more or less directly) that at least some "spren are Splinters of Honor" (heavily paraphrased)? So how should the Splinters of Honor get "touched ... by ... (possibly a Splinter of Honor)?" I don't see any logic here.
  7. This question bothers me quite a while now. Syl says: But on the other side she said: And, perhaps the better "argument" for my idea: So the fearspren left Bridge Four alone not, because there was no fear but because the other bridgemen felt more fear. That is evidence for me to theorize: Kaladin('s way of live) attracted Syl('s attention) setting the foundations for their further relationship and therewith for Syl's development. Following this idea I dare say that all spren are attracted by ... (flamespren by fire (flames), windpren by wind, riverspren by rivers, bindspren by using stormlight to bind something, rotspren by infectious wounds, deathspren by people that are near to death, exhaustionspren by people that are exhausted, tbc.). A further idea: If my thoughts are right and only windspren can become honorspren this may be caused by the fact that they are always out and dancing on/with the storms, even highstorms that sort of "carry" (for lacking a better word) stormlight which seems to be "Honor's power given to the people?" What do you think? edit: adding the fourth quote and the following lines.
  8. The Heralds return ...? You refer to "returning to torture?" And do we have WoB about "Nohadon founded the KR?" Who kept the Nahel-spren seperate? And how? And why should one do this? I have problems to believe that in centuries there was not one person honorable enough to bind/get bound by an honorspren. That might have not been written somewhere (or not found yet). Or do we have real evidence that Kaladin/Syl were the very first spren/human (do spren only get relationship with humans?)? Edit: adding a question I think there is a limited number of spren that are able to become Honorspren. Maybe only some windspren can change that way. Then it might have been harder for them to find an honorable person. Syl has definitely been described as a windspren:
  9. Only for clarification: Not the Shardplate absorbs stormlight, only built-in gems. IIRC there are sockets built in the Plates that -- I think so -- might restrict the amount and size for the used gems. And there's surely a limit of stormlight one gem can contain, so when this limit is reached the biggest highstorm couldn't help more.
  10. I'm sorry, but I don't think so: If that would work I'm sure that the regrow of Dalinar's gauntlet wouldn't "take days."
  11. Do spren "manifest" in the Psychical Realm? I dare claim that there is no newer statement from BS about that question. Furthermore I think that spren =|= spren. There are spren that seem attracted by emotions (fearspren, luckspren, painspren), by physical conditions of people ("alespren", rotspren, deathspren, exhaustionspren), by different weather conditions (rainspren, windspren) or by other circumstances (fire -> flamespren). Btw. here's the complete quote about Kaladin's mother and spren: I've emphasized what might be the most important parts though the full quote might be helpful. Manifest in the Cognitive Realm? Now I'm confused. I think your idea only works for those kinds of spren that are not generally around. When Kaladin's mother said that there are spren in everything, I think she meant those which are generally around, not those that become visible by chance like fearspren that seem to appear where they find the greatest amount of fear (as you said). That might support my idea that spren =|= spren. Also I'm sure -- but I'm unable to find it at the moment -- that there was a statement from BS, that there are different spren, some more of honor and some more of cultivation (heavily paraphrased). I hope this is understandable.
  12. Thanks for clarification. Next question: In which way do you think Odium changed the Heralds with torture. Eh, I mean: How did the Heralds change when possibly tortured by Odium?
  13. Not only that, but how did his family and entourage come to Urithiru then? I don't think that really everyone has access to Shadesmar (neither through Oathgates about which we don't know anything until now). Do you imply that Urithiru still moves around? I -- still -- like my idea that it is sunken in an ocean or lake (what might not necessarily contradict the moving-island-idea because it could have died and sunken).
  14. Who are "the heroes"?
  15. "Their voices were whispers, scratchy sounds like paper being torn." (quote from TWoK) This might mean that one must be closer to death (than Kaladin was) to understand them (Kaladin surely didn't). And Syl isn't "doing something to keep him alive." She tries to keep away the deathspren from Kaladin: I'm sure (gut feeling) that if she could help Kaladin actively, she would do. But that would mean she could hold and give away stormlight. But she can't do this as the following quote shows too.
  16. Kaladin felt "as if he could float away." (That's from PM's quote.) A few weeks after his recovery he "dreamed he was the storm" (TWoK Ch. 46). I feel those are similar levels of consciousness. I don't have an idea what the Spiritual Realm is or how it is arranged, so I wouldn't deny that both events where "visits to the Spiritual Realm." About the Spiritual Realm: That makes me wonder if Dalinar's visions were such visits to the Spiritual Realm, too. Not that I'm the first to ask this: So, only a RAFO unfortunately.
  17. I think that's because the Midnight Essences were nothing really living or animated nor were of flesh.
  18. I personally don't think so. The death cries are described to happen in the last few seconds before somebody dies, in that very moments when life leaves them. It was never told in TWoK that mortally ill people speak in a similar way (even if those could be babbling while in delirium). That paragraph you quoted seems to be a feverish dream were Kaladin sort of re-experienced that event and because he feels guilty, and thus in his dream he was a bridgeman from Bridge Two, one of those who had lots of casualties because of Bridge Four's side-carry action.
  19. There is a Coppermind article about Dalinar's visions also. But perhaps you found this page already.
  20. Do we not have to differentiate between the Shard (Honor) and the person who's holding it (Tanavast). It maybe that Tanavast died. But ... Honor didn't "die", he was Splintered, so "parts" of Honor are still around. And if Honorspren are Splinters of Honor (I remember that I saw that but it was told that that interview/q&a isn't transcribed yet), then Splinters of Honor had been around long before Honor presumably died and he freely gave them away. Nohadon told Dalinar about Honorspren. [TWoK Ch. 60] and I'm fairly sure that "we" believe that Honor's Shattering presumably hadn't been before the Recreance. Otherwise -- if Honor's Splinters were a result of his Shattering/being Splintered by Odium -- the only conclusion would be that Honor was Shattered long, very long ago. Possibly before the Heralds were put on their task (or: the Heralds were put on their task as a result of the Shattering/Splintering of Honor. Ha! One of my beloved speculations. ... What do you all think?
  21. (bold emphasizes mine) My posting was not to rebut the idea that maybe the Unmade were kind of "the ten anti-heralds" (though I don't see any evidence) but to show that "step between" the Heralds and the Knights Radiant as for Gunslinger had asked whether the Ten Fools were the anti-thesis of the Knights Radiant. That might be slightly off-topic here. Sorry. But, as I told before, I'm not convinced that Yelig-nar is an Unmade. He seems to be kind of a human when mentioned by Nohadon. But that one death quote makes him feel more *mystical*. Now I lost track , despite that I'll post this.
  22. I apologize for the late reply and me being stubborn. (Kind of a quote because that editor makes me crazy, I beg for your pardon for this, too.) gunslingers () ... Are the Ten Fools the antithesis of the ten orders of the Knights Radiant? ... Brandon Sanderson ...The Ten Fools are, essentially, the opposites of the Ten Heralds—who each represented an ideal. (Those ideals were later adopted by the orders of Knights Radiant, so yes, there is a connection—but there's a step between them.) First: BS says that the Ten Fools are the opposites of the Ten Heralds. Second: Each of the Heralds represented an Ideal. Third: Those Ideals were adopted by the KR. Fourth: There is a connection: Heralds -> Ideals -> Knights Radiant The "step between them" is the adoption of the Ideals by the Knights Radiant.
  23. I'm musing about that for a longer time. I think, I have an idea what a syre is but I'm not an expert and therefor I dare ask: Is a syre more foil or an épée or do I err totally?
  24. Why do you think he has two Divine Breaths then? Because Lightsong died immediately? (My thoughts under the premise that you answer "yes" I personally don't think, that Susebron has two Divine Breathes after being healed by Lightsong, because there were other persons in the history of Hallandren that were healed by Returned. If the Returned would give away their Divine Breath due to healing somebody, they would (wouldn't they?) create a new Returned then? If so the Hallendren Gods could much more manipulate their Court, because they could chose their successor by healing somebody they chose due to this reason and not because of necessitate. As for I think that it's Endowments choice who returns I, too, think, (s)he gets the Divine Breath back that (s)he invested in that Returned who now healed somebody. (What would explain that the Returned dies immediately, too.)
  25. Hey there! Glad that you're here, Vonotar, hope you enjoy yourself! As you've already seen the Cosmere is really enormous and has lots of similarities but also lots of singularities. For more information (although you might find spoilers there) look at The Coppermind Wiki Theoryland and here in the forums .
