  1. But BS said that Odium doesn't Invest. From where, then, would Dilaf have his *odium-powers*. ...
  2. No, we don't know yet. And I don't believe the glowing thing to be a Shardblade, but if it was, then it hadn't been bound to Amaran at the time of Shallan's flashback. Is this understandable?
  3. Uhm, if the monster was a shardblade -- would it be not far to seek that it's the one Helaran (sp?). (That thought occurred to me when I read this, although I'm fairly sure there's no shardblade in the tresor.) Edit: Re-reading Shallan's flashback something strikes me: I might give this too much credit (as for BS is known for his subtle hints): The crystels glow sublime ... the .. safe glowed brightly ... That would hint for a gemstone inside the tresor or -- as Hoser said -- something glowing we don't know yet.
  4. Regarding the following quote I'm worried. Please bear with me for my befuddlement, the possibility that this question was brought up before (I didn't find anything), and the possibility that BS yet clarified my problem (I didn't find anything). That reads to me as if there are only "Slivers of Adonalsium," but there would be no Slivers of one of the sixteen Shards of Adonalsium. At the moment I understand Splinters and Slivers as kind of a "pair" of description. But with the above quote I likely think that that "pair" should be Slivers and Shards. edit: If I'd be right we'd have to adjust the coppermind article about Slivers.
  5. Lurking around looking for other things I just came up with another idea, why Vin avoided Hoid. I could imagine that Vin kind of feels (burning bronze, as I think she permanently does) that Hoid had the lerasium bead; more concretely: that Hoid incorporated the lerasium bead and therefor is a "Mistborn." We know that Hoid has a bead of lerasium. And we know that ingesting lerasium the first time one burns it. In The Letter Hoid tells the (yet unknown) recepient: All this together let me come up with this idea. I think Hoid became a Mistborn (or sort of a Mistborn) and, living on Scadrial with Allomancy around, he might have given away allomantic impulses that Vin felt but seemed strange to her (as for Hoid isn't native to Scadrial and his allomantic powers might "sound" different to those Vin is used to. edit -- I forgot an important part (the fourth quote)
  6. I'm re-reading Mistborn Trilogy, too. Although that much reading in the books didn't strike me as much as you, The Question, I stumbled about another thing that let me think of "cross-cosmere" similarities: Reading this part I was reminded of Warbreaker. I see, that it's not identical, but there are parallels. I could imagine that the Terris Keepers have a copy of "The Way of Kings" in their stored knowledges (especially given Hoid and Demoux as worldhoppers). And the Rosharan men are not really (or don't have to be) unread or un-educated, their way is different with having books get read to them.
  7. Yes, but remember when Szeth fought Gavilar he felt "Pain. So much pain!" (original quote from TWoK). And: "Stormlight healing was far from instantaneous." (a few sentences later) Stormlight doesn't work like Pewter. I still see Kaladin ready "to jump", reaching down at this thing on the ground. I don't see, he's off balance. And even more so I can't see Kaladin landing on stone that hard, shattering the stone. I can imagine that he's looking at the persons he is to protect (despite Szeth).
  8. That describes what I tried to say. edit: Trying to take a closer look I think these "things" might be gems indeed. And I found something disturbing: He's an absent look. Not really wary .
  9. Wow, great . From the colored picture I don't think it's a gemheart (a gemheart that big lying around somewhere?). But in this draft it really looks more like a gem than a puddle. I think he's "on the hop" (aware of his surroundings and "jumpy") but he kind of kneels reaching down at the gemheart-puddle. I don't see him out of balance.
  10. Some quotes from Q&As: hth
  11. I must have missed this information, where does it come from?
  12. I might have misunderstood you here. You say, you think that one has to experience something like Snapping to be able to use feruchemical abilities? I don't think so. Sazed explained to Vin (MIstborn, Ch 16) that the Lord Ruler hated the Terris people because of the Keepers. I think that there wouldn't be a necessity for breeding programs and castration if Terris people would not be able to use Feruchemy by birth.
  13. I've been recommended to read Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles. I've bought the first (The Name of the Wind) and on the second attempt I've read it. It didn't hook me like BS's books but it was interesting and nice to read. So I bought the second book (A Wise Man's Fear), too. And, exactly the Felurian scenes made me to stop reading. Not only because of the sex scenes. Yet in the first book I've got the impression of Kvothe being a super-mega-imba-uba-hero. Finding Felurian and the following scenes (as far as I've read them before stopping) imply that he gets still more "uba". I might start reading it again sometimes but at the moment I'm supersaturated with Kvothe. @topic and GRRM: I've read ASoIaF over a long time and I've kind of enjoyed it. Kind of ... it's a long-scale story and itched me to buy the next book when it was available. But there is a lot of violence and force and, too, sex. I've kind of ignored the sex-scenes mostly. What is really too much are the Daenerys-parts. I've got to hate her nearly since her first appearance.
  14. There are some points that are itching me for a while now. 1. One might say that Alethkar is nearly the same as Alethela. But half of the region that’s called the Unclaimed Hills were part of Alethela. The Frostlands seem to include the complete Unclaimed Hills as for I don’t see a border line there. 2. Another thing is, that the Frostlands are never mentioned in TWoK. We know that Kharbranth is a city-state but we know nothing about the Frostlands though they share a long border with Alethkar. Who reigns that land? Who are the inhabitants? Are there inhabitants? When Kaladin came through the Unclaimed Hills there was not a word about people living there. Gavilar’s expedition made its way through the Unclaimed Hills (I think at the Western edge near to the border). The records say: “It was not uncommon for us to meet native peoples while traveling through the Unclaimed Hills, ... These ancient lands were once one of the Silver Kingdoms, after all.” (That last sentence seems illogical as all of Roshar had been part of “one of the Silver Kingdoms” once.) So, who lives in the Unclaimed Hills? Natan people(s)? Parshendi? In Gavilar’s records was mentioned that “Yet here was a group who could hunt, make weapons, build buildings, and—indeed—create their own civilization.” They seem not to be nomads as they “build buildings” which wouldn’t be the case if they were nomads. Nor am I under the impression that they are sort of savaged servants. They were driven to the center of the Shattered Plains in the need to find a save place away from the invading army of the Alethi Highprinces but staying close to the chasms (for gemhearts). How cold are the Frostlands? They might be the coldest region because they are the first part of Roshar where the Highstorms hit. 3. Dalinar said: “I’d been on a half-dozen expeditions to Natanatan …” which seems curious given this: “Natanatan. The Shattered Plains lay in the land that had once been Natanatan. The kingdom had fallen centuries ago.” 4. Another curiosity: When Shallan looked for books in Kharbranth she thought: “The five Vorin kingdoms? She’d thought there were four. Jah Keved, Alethkar, Kharbranth, and Natanatan.” Jah Keved, Alethkar, Kharbranth are actual existing states. Why did she mention Natanatan (which “had fallen centuries ago”)? This implies that Natanatan was the last of the Silver Kingdoms that fell but it seems to be kept in the minds of people until “today.” But I’d like to point at No. 1: the borders of Alethela/Natanatan had not been the same as the now existing borders. Lots of discrepancies … Does anyone have some thoughts or information about this?
  15. emphasizes mine (that quote is one example) I admit that I did downvote the quoted post. Why? Because it's an insult against people. It's not about the topic and doesn't relate to the content of the discussion but is able to offend users of this forums, at least I feel offended by it and may be others too.

  17. I dare toss in another point, though it's might not be important for the question in this thread (Defining Focus): Reading the AoL-Ars Arcanum on the three metal arts I was kind of surprised that the same focus can have different tasks. I think we should have this in mind while trying to define what a focus is.
  18. We do have that confirmation: And I wouldn't say that Cultivation is a "counterpart" of Honor: And: Honor and Cultivation were on Roshar long before Odium arrived. But, yes, I'm, too, confused that there is no mention of Cultivation. edit: ninjad by Windrunner but I have more quotes.
  19. I'm with Shardlet here. But some own thoughts: "A bond (Nahel or not)" ... That's a valid question. Do we know that there are bonds aside from the Nahel bond? I think, a Nahel bond is permanent when established. What other bonds might be there? The cryptics seem to grant access to Shadesmar. Aside from the Soulcasting itself (when Shallan entered Shadesmar the second time (to proof her ability to do so to Jasnah) there was no Soulcasting involved). Though I'm not defying that Soulcasting needs this access to Shadesmar, I think the cryptics a kind of "doorkeepers" for Shadesmar and the "tax" to pass is telling a strong truth. If there is the possibility of a bond between somebody wanting access to Shadesmar and the cryptics, I'm sure, Shallan wasn't bonded after her first visit to Shadesmar. Probably she's bonded after her second visit, but we don't have evidence because we didn't see her visit Shadesmar or Soulcast after her second visit. Perhaps her second truth (I'm a murderer) was strong enough to build a bond, but we don't know. I've said: Her painting abilities might grant her the ability to paint the cryptics. But not the other way around.

  21. Yeah, Elodin is great. So is Arya, who I really like (I've been that bad with her father when she had to leave her wolf behind).
  22. I apologize for partially disagreeing. ad 1: Here I'm with you. and ad 2: I disagree. I think that the "Bonding" isn't an act of a moment but a process. With Kal and Syl, I think, that process startet when Syl revealed herself to Kal (Chapter 2) and ends with him saying the Second Ideal. This thought is based on BS' statement that "Syl has recovered everything of her personality." (I hope, he meant that she was at that point at the end of TWoK.) and my idea that she must have gained her full personality for being a full part of the Nahel bond. Aside: I'm sure "we" see Syl the first time prior to that battle when Kal defeats the Shardbearer (when his pouch is stuck to his belt (Ch. 47)), and next when he fights to rescue Cenn (Ch. 2 and 47): (I dare remind you that both quotes describe the same fight, thus this happens at the same time.) As for Shallan: Clining to my above idea I'm not sure whether there is already a Nahel bond between Shallan and a spren. Also I don't really see a connection between the cryptics and her painting abilities. If I understood this right, the cryptics are her "spren partners" for soulcasting, not for drawing. Otherwise Elhokar too would already be bound to a Nahel bond -- he see's the cryptics in the mirror, Shallan paints them unwittingly. Another musing: I think that not everybody on Roshar can attract a spren for a Nahel bond. One has to make the right decisions. PS: I seems I didn't read all posts through, so I apologizes for possibly saying something that is already said here.
  23. This is an interesting theory and I'm really curious whether you're right, as for the question about the Ten Essences being the focus on Roshar was RAFO'd:
  24. At first: I know we shouldn't do double-postings but I really don't see any way to put quotes (nearly) correctly into an edited post, neither did I find a way to make a "orderly" second quote down here. Searching the WoT-Database for "focus" I only came up with "RAFOs". But here Chaos said:
  25. It was your question. The following quote might be interesting to this thread too:
