Negative reputation levels
Scion of the Mists replied to beantheboy12's topic in 17th Shard Discussion
I fully understand (and agree with) the rationale behind scrapping downvotes. But, man, sometimes it would be a really nice option to have... -
Allriandre's age and/or attitude don't make sense to me.
Scion of the Mists replied to BrainFreeze's topic in Mistborn
Being forced to repeatedly interact with the person who murdered your father (and who is lauded as a hero by most people) seems like the kind of thing that's impossible for people who haven't experienced it to really understand. -

Scion of the Mists replied to BrainFreeze's topic in Mistborn
I don't think it's unreasonable to resent the person who killed your dad, even if it happened when you were really young. Would you want to interact with someone who had murdered a family member? -

I'm thinking Luthadel (Well of Ascension), Fardex City (storage cache), and T'Telir (underground passages). @DoomStick @luckat @Mr Mafia any other ideas? -
Hoid's Inability to Harm Others
Scion of the Mists replied to StormblessedSurvivor's topic in Cosmere Discussion
The power of Preservation existed prior to the Shattering of Adonalsium. Just because the Shard Preservation didn't exist doesn't mean that the Investiture didn't exist. All Investiture got assigned at the Shattering to the Shards, but it's not new. -
Yelig-nar is a Rosharan Nightblood
Scion of the Mists replied to Pathfinder's topic in Stormlight Archive
Allomantic aluminum does more than just wipe kinetic Investiture, as the metals in an Allomancer's stomach are definitely not kinetic Investiture. -
Oh, I see what you're saying. I agree (with a few exceptions, as @Invocation pointed out).

There are only three Shards on Roshar: Honor, Cultivation, and Odium.

How many atium shadows does a steelrunner have?
Scion of the Mists replied to beantheboy12's topic in Mistborn
Here's another issue. The atium shadows have to be in real time, right? What happens then when the attack is so fast you can't even see it?- 43 replies

I've added you to the Blue Team. We'll be starting soon. -
Yes, Ashyn's medical advancement and the diseases granting surges have to be pre-calamity. Otherwise using them to keep cities afloat wouldn't make sense. Also, Calamities like that usually regress societies, not progress. That is not to say new things haven't been developed after, just that the primary means by which the floating cities remain functional have to have been known before. The PoV character even mentions the dangerousness of the powers granted by the diseases when he is pondering on the devastation. Ashyn's magic system was not always based on diseases. We do not know how any of those work precisely. We do not know anything about what the special steps required for something like the Spren or Kelsier going offworld are. So I'm not gonna speculate there. Azure, Hoid, and Mraize are all very cosmere aware people. If any of those things have this restriction, these characters could feasibly have taken the steps required to untether it. So I'm not sure if we can use those as examples here. There is a huge difference between spren/Cognitive Shadows (i.e. being composed mostly or entirely of Investiture) and standard living beings. We've never seen any restrictions on normal beings worldhopping, even highly Invested ones (e.g. Marsh's "Investiture would not prevent him from going offworld"). However, spren and Cognitive Shadows are different because they're basically entirely Investiture, which binds them to their Shard's physical location.

Don't feel dumb - that's actually a really good question, one that I don't remember coming across before and never even thought to ask. Can you steal stolen attributes? Good question for Brandon (unless the WoB-guru's stop by).

@Jruesch2 it's because the enhancement metals are more strongly connected than the other quadrants. Iron/steel and tin/pewter don't have very much to do with one another. Same for the mental and temporal quadrants. They're pairs of two different abilities. The enhancement abilities, on the other hand, are basically variants of the same ability. So aluminum/duralumin are destroy/enhance metals. But chromium/nicrosil are also destroy/enhance metals (just someone else's). Hopefully that made sense - I'm having difficulty putting it into words.

It would be nice if it was an in-world work, but it'll be really nice to not have two different SoS books.

Can all Truthwatchers see the future?
Scion of the Mists replied to IGetLIFTed's topic in Stormlight Archive
One of the Truthwatcher gems from the Urithiru Gem Archive reveals that at least one other Truthwatcher was able to see the future: It's unclear what exactly that means. It could mean that all Truthwatchers can see the future, but then it wouldn't be such a secret. It could mean that Sja-anat "enlightened" a Truthwatcher spren in the past, but it's thought in the book that that was impossible. -
Was Odium permanently ‘maimed’ by Dominion?
Scion of the Mists replied to Fanghur Rahl's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It's actually four. Ambition was a casualty too. And all the Shards started out equal. As @Lightblood theorizes, staying in one place for too long causes a Shard to Invest in that place, which ties up a Shard's power. This likely played into how Odium was able to get the upper hand on his victims, and explains why he planned to avoid Investing on a planet himself. "Odium's plan always involved not getting stuck on [a planet]." However, he is now Invested on Braize and leaving would be "very difficult" and would "involve leaving behind some of his power". However, skill also comes into play. When Brandon was asked about a showdown between between Odium and Harmony (who is "vastly more powerful than Odium"), he compared it to a fight between Vin and Elend, which would obviously go to Vin. -
Revived shardblades become what exactly?
Scion of the Mists replied to beantheboy12's topic in Stormlight Archive
Azure's blade is very, very different from either living or dead Shardblades. -

Silver: the useless metal... or is it?
Scion of the Mists replied to Vargo Seldon's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Can you explain more about how you define "balance metal" and "dead metal"? Thanks -
I would imagine that Sandmastery is powered by Autonomy's Investiture from the Spiritual Realm, while the water acts more like the metals on Scadrial, which provide the initial connection. But yes, I agree that it seems at odds with the intent of water as a limiting factor. I mean if all magic users inherently have a means to bypass the limit, why have the limit in the first place?

Methods of initiation and - Vax?
Scion of the Mists replied to Oltux72's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I agree this is the best interpretation. It explains both the Allomancy/Feruchemy not being inheritable and the koloss breeding true. -
Chromium and aluminum are internal/external counterparts. From chromium's Coppermind page: "Chromium acts just like aluminum inside the body, causing any Allomancers touched by a Leecher to lose their metal reserves." Duralumin does not affect itself - it burns at a steady rate. It doesn't actually add any power, it just turbocharges your burn rate for the other metals, so you get the effect much quicker. Good point about the earring. Invested metals (which Hemalurgic spikes are) are harder to affect, so it would take more time for the aluminum/chromium to affect them.
