The magic dagger and Jasnah's plans
Scion of the Mists replied to Oltux72's topic in Stormlight Archive
@insert_anagram_here I suppose anything's possible. However, nothing that the Stormfather says has anything to do with the Unmade, only the Fused. Also, in the WoB that's been linked a couple times, Brandon explicitly says that "As long as one remains, the Desolation will not start again." Which seems pretty clear. -

The magic dagger and Jasnah's plans
Scion of the Mists replied to Oltux72's topic in Stormlight Archive
I think the defeat of the Everstorm (by some unknown mechanism that I'm not creative enough to guess) is something very likely to happen. Not only would it help solve the problem of the unkillable army, but it would also return life on Roshar to a much more habitable state. Even if you survive the Desolation, the Everstorm is just so destructive that its continued existence would be really, really bad for everyone. If not strengthen the Oathpact, what do you think killing a Herald would do? (Obviously we know for sure that the Fused are reborn; I suppose it's possible that Jasnah doesn't believe the Stormfather) -
Right we have no indication that he has either the benefits or drawbacks of savantism.

Worldhopper Elantrians

Pretty sure that this is Connection. Kelsier's mind is interpreting the Selish word "Ire" and seeing the written form of the Aon. -
The magic dagger and Jasnah's plans
Scion of the Mists replied to Oltux72's topic in Stormlight Archive
Yes, the Oathpact is still in existence. I'm not arguing that. I'm saying that it's functionally useless. It's entire purpose was to prevent the Fused on Braize from returning. But the Fused don't go to Braize anymore, so it's not going to do anything. Killing a Herald doesn't trigger anything (as far as we know). I suppose the possibility exists that the weakened state Oathpact is what allows the Everstorm to bypass it, and that strengthening the Oathpact may prevent the Everstorm's ability to revive the Fused (although this is pure speculation). Even still, I don't see how killing Heralds is going to strengthen the Oathpact. It was weakened because nine of the Heralds refused to return to Braize following the previous Desolation. But we're in a new Desolation now and we know that the Heralds are allowed to be on Roshar during Desolations (indeed, it's basically the only time it's allowable). -
Right, and Szeth in the middle of a battle is basically flaring his powers. However, he's not doing that for a very large percentage of the time, just when he's fighting. He didn't assassinate all that many people (just a key handful). Whereas, (Mistborn spoilers)

That's referring to affecting the metal with magic, not using it as a spike/burning it. Didn't Brandon say something to the effect that god metals (e.g. Tanavastium or Trellium) can be used in the Metallic Arts, provided that the Shard does something to make it work?

Lift as an allomancer
Scion of the Mists replied to not an Evil Librarian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Not entirely. Allomancy has no problem burning atium, which does provide its own fuel. Nor is this limited to pure atium. The alloys also work. We are not sure whether allomancy really requires you to use either Preservation or Ruin. In fact if anything that is hemalurgically active also works allomantically, Trellium must be burnable. Atium is a special case, both because it's a god metal and because it was an early addition to the Cosmere, prior to Brandon firming up the mechanics, so it "breaks a lot of rules." Only the Scadrian god metals work naturally with the Metallic Arts. Other shards would have to hack the system to have their metals work. Trell has clearly done this (at least with Hemalurgy). Ninja'd What @Jace21 said. Burning the metal is what causes the filtering effect, not just having metal in your stomach. -
Aren't they exactly as Invested as atium or lerasium? I thought that all the god metals would all work with the Metallic Arts, provided that you hacked the non-Scadrian ones.

Good catch! I totally missed that when I read Secret History. Yes, the Ire are all Elantrians. We don't know a whole lot about them, but Brandon has stressed that they are old - "very, very, very, very old." The Coppermind doesn't have much, but here's what Arcanum has on them: https://wob.coppermind.net/adv_search/?tags=ire When Brandon says RAFO, it doesn't always literally mean "read and find out." It's basically his version of "no comment" - it could mean that he doesn't feel like answering, it could be a spoiler for a future book, it could be way off base, it could mean that he just feels like trolling us.

The magic dagger and Jasnah's plans
Scion of the Mists replied to Oltux72's topic in Stormlight Archive
We don't know how "end of a Desolation" is defined. But yeah, that's a good idea to try to "cheat" the rules. We don't know. I have a theory (which I've been meaning to write up for ages) that the Everstorm is Odium's perpendicularity. Evidence being: The Stormfather says it's "a new thing, but old of design" - which could mean that it's been on Braize ever since he got stuck there (Shardpools come from "spending a lot of time on a world") and he just moved it Brandon has said that "there are Shards whose Shardpools are not on a planet they currently inhabit. At least one." The Everstorm distributes Investiture, just like a Shardpool does Yes. I think of it as a prison break. When a Herald "agreed [to] let Voidbringers past, it opened a flood. They could all return." Basically the Herald who broke opened the gates to the prison, but only temporarily. -
Lift as an allomancer
Scion of the Mists replied to not an Evil Librarian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
To elaborate on what @Jace21 said, Allomancy has two steps. First you burn the metal. This creates basically a door to a huge chunk of power (Preservation's Investiture) located in the Spiritual Realm (i.e. not inside of the Allomancer). This power flows into the Allomancer and is "shaped" by the specific metal burnt to determine what effect that power has (e.g. steel pushing, Soothing/Rioting, etc.). Nightblood would indeed be able to feed on this power, but only as long as it was flowing through you. Once you run out of metals, he'd start to feed on you like everyone else. But the fuel in Allomancy is Preservation's Investiture in the Spiritual Realm. I don't see how you can have Allomancy without burning metals (or Shard-level shenanigans). This is super interesting. I don't think I've seen anyone propose that before (I certainly didn't think about it). It seems like she would be able to store the metabolized Investiture in the metalminds, although this might require two hacks: the ability to use Stormlight in the magic system, and a way of directly storing Investiture in place of attributes. -

I understand your reasoning. I think "underground" could have also referred to the Purelake (where water goes underground during highstorms). @Mr Mafia care to weigh in? -
(Elantris spoiler) Anyway, the point wasn't that slatrification makes sand mastery overpowered. The point was that it's a mechanic that virtually all sand masters have access to that completely bypasses a major restriction of the magic system. Why even have the dehydration aspect if you can just make more water? Even Brandon admits it doesn't makes sense.

The magic dagger and Jasnah's plans
Scion of the Mists replied to Oltux72's topic in Stormlight Archive
Except that apparently they did also seal them while they were on Roshar. I'm not sure what the exception is that you're seeing. The Heralds, via the Oathpact, sealed the Fused in Damnation, unless they violated the agreement, which could happen in two different ways. First, they had the ability to "bend [their] oath" and voluntarily "let the Voidbringers past" (i.e. break under torture, triggering a new Desolation). Second, they (well, really only one Herald) were required to return to Braize within a set period of time following a Desolation, or it would trigger a new one. The Oathpact is still in force (i.e. binding dead Fused to Braize) during the Desolation. That's the whole point of the Oathpact - it'd be impossible for a Desolation to end otherwise. The Fused could only make the trip when the Oathpact was violated, for one of the two reasons listed above: Herald broke from torture, or refusal to return to Braize. @Pathfinder I understand your point. I think that (given what we as out-of-world readers know), Jasnah's plan is guaranteed to fail. However, Jasnah may not have all the information we have (even the in-world info available; do we know Dalinar recited the Stormfather's words verbatim?). Plus, it's defensible (in a Machiavellian sense) to try a long shot plan to save the world, hoping that some of the knowledge you have is wrong or something unexpected would happen. -
Szeth did not Surgebind nearly enough for savantism to set in. As mentioned in the WoB, it can take decades for Soulcasting to cause changes.

I think that the Dustbringers could use Abrasion to remove friction to great effect. Just zipping around the enemy like Lift does, except instead of stealing their food, they burn them to a crisp.

Yes, the crem will build up on the eastern side of things. However, this WoB makes it clear that the erosion on the east is what's causing the continent to drift:

The magic dagger and Jasnah's plans
Scion of the Mists replied to Oltux72's topic in Stormlight Archive
How do we know that? Breaking the Oathpact gave each Fused a trip from Braize to Roshar. We do not actually know whether the Oathpact or the lack of an Everstorm prevented further returns. The Stormfather says "YOUR HERALDS SEALED THE SPREN OF THE DEAD INTO THE PLACE YOU CALL DAMNATION" - I think that's pretty cut and dried. -
The magic dagger and Jasnah's plans
Scion of the Mists replied to Oltux72's topic in Stormlight Archive
I had forgotten that she said that. I still think it makes no sense. The Oathpact very clearly bound the Fused even when all the Heralds were on Roshar (i.e. during the Desolations). Them being on Roshar or Braize only mattered after the Desolation was over. The Fused are reborn via the Everstorm even in the middle of this Desolation, therefore, the binding mechanism is not working, Herald on Braize or no. -
Sorry, didn't realize you were new. Welcome to the Shard! A couple of useful links: Site Rules The Coppermind (the Cosmere Wikipedia) Arcanum (archive of all of Brandon's statements regarding the Cosmere)

For extra powers. With his current powers, he's very effective at scouting and fighting at close range; however, his powers really only augment his natural fighting ability. Something like Soulcasting or Division would give him a magical means of fighting.

Yes, as @Gasper points out, this is confirmed in the books (i.e. the Kaza interlude). You can also check out the Coppermind page for savantism.

This is getting pretty far off topic, but I don't think that hunting down a murderer who might not be the worst murderer in the world is Skybreaker-level blind obedience to the law. I tend to think of the Skybreaker-mindset as executing someone who stole bread to feed their starving family.
