  1. You are conveniently forgetting that it's about being 'self-aware' of that ability in order to make it work. Because he heard her name, he started believing that she could come sooner and in the urgency of that moment, he 'willed' her to come sooner. So it boils down to 'why' there is that Connection there. You say it's because it's a nahel bond, I still continue to believe it's because of the Bondsmith's Adhesion. From the Coppermind:
  2. Stop breaking my heart :'( It's been more than a year already!
  3. I'm not really disagreeing here tbh as I don't think I've got all the information down to have that much of a strong opinion. Just throwing counter arguments for the sake of discussion challenge (sorry!) Shallan has trouble with Transformation but she was 'affixing' illusions on Pattern since the beginning of OB, so maybe a KR doesn't need to master both Surges in order to combine them for small amounts of time? Um, I can't remember how much in control Renarin is of his 'future sight', could it be that he managed to get a few visions by chance? Haha, glad to be of help, I'm curious what the Shard has to say about this.
  4. I admit I haven't read Stump's or Ym's parts as much as I's like in order to contribute, so I'll have to come back to this sometime later. But from the top of my head, could it be that Nale, since he is invested, felt some 'tides of Fortune' (or even has someone doing this for him) and that's why he knew where the Truthwatchers were and hunted them down, in the first place? And I still think the argument that " hasn't "advanced enough yet" still stands because it's a different ability to use Progression, another to use Illumination and another to use the combination of the two. ( Edit: Shallan has trouble with Transformation but she was 'affixing' illusions on Pattern since the beginning of OB. ) Also, I don't think we can be sure that Renarin's future sight is a 'proper' one if Glys is corrupted right? Couldn't Sja-anat's interference basically 'fake' it? On Sja-anat, from Coppermind: If it's only 'lesser' spren why would Radiants fear her so much? @Pathfinder
  5. I think, a theory has been mentioned before on the forums, that seeing the future is forbidden because it's too risky. as Hoid has warned Shallan as well. Azure rationalised that Kaladin could've had the vision that Dalinar was in danger "through some tide of Fortune" and that has led to the Realmatic theory that when someone foresee the future it causes ripples of visions to people connected to the Spiritual Realm. So a TW could see the future, but the enemy would get a 'premonition' of how the KR plan changed because of that knowledge. Its a 'double edged sword' ability that cancels itself, if not used with caution. Now I personally think that Sja-anat's corruption adds one more element to that danger, because she might essentially 'highjack' that vision to be something she wants to show, in order to lead a Radiant towards a certain path. That's why the Vorin religion was established to reject the notion of foreseeing, to protect future generations from making the same grave mistakes.
  6. Started re-reading WoK and I found two things that might be relevant to this thread. Maybe this bit indicates that there is a legend about the stormstriders calling them 'the shades of the Lost Radiants'? I think someone asked what the clouds looking spren on Sja-anat's page are. I think they are supposed to be logicspren.
  7. So let me see if I got that right, there is a bond involved that needs the will of the Shardbearer, the Deadeye spren and the gemstone attached on the Shardblade itself. So that's basically Spiritual(will of the Shardbearer), Cognitive(Deadeye spren) and Physical(gemstone and Shardblade) aspects. And because there is that 'will of the Shardbearer' there is no need for Stormlight to fuel it?
  8. To each their own, so let me bring you my theoretical scenario. Adolin mentions that he needed 7 heartbeats to revive Maya but that doesn't seem to work afterward and with the help from Shallan and Jasnah they figure out that Honor's Perpedicularity had probably something to do with it, the Realms were closer together. When Dalinar asks Stormfather if it's possible to help out Adolin with reviving Maya he refuses to offer his powers branding Adolin as 'not of Honor, he is bound to break his oaths'. Dalinar tells Adolin he cannot help, Adolin has a tantrum saying he should've never expected something from Dalinar, he killed Evi after all and leaves. Adolin determined to help Maya, sees Sja-Anat in the mirror, she tells him she has a way to help. End of Book 4.
  9. Hm, probably by the fact that there is an indication that evolution played its part on Roshar (Dawnsingers were the ancient Listeners, Unkalaki have listener blood etc). And I would assume that different blood color indicates that each blood-color species evolved from different ancestors and in separate ecosystems. From Shallan's observations in WoR there is also an indication that the Greatshells' unique life cycle is what attributes to them having such huge and valuable gemhearts. So I kinda mashed the whole rationale in my head I guess.
  10. I certainly imagine Stormfather saying no to that, but that's probably just me
  11. With the Dalinar involvement in this speculative scenario, I'd like to say that I'd love to see Dalinar trying to explain to Stormfather why Adolin should become a KR, especially after Sadea's murder. I do not think he would agree tbh.
  12. I think that gumfrem should have purple blood as well then. Now I wonder if the Scouring of Aimia is connected to this. Edit: I mean, larkin seem to be native on Aimia and we know those feed on stormlight. I wonder if their gemhearts could be harvested in the same way and if what we know as the event of 'Scouring of Aimia' was essentially a mass harvesting of gemhearts. (just speculating here)
  13. Thank you, everyone, for all the information shared on Nightblood. Sorry for derailing the thread. My question was directed mostly challenge at @Weltall who seemed very determined that it doesn't matter whether something is explained in Stormlight, as far as it's done somewhere in the Cosmere books. Since my point is probably being lost on the way I'll try again. It's not that the Cosmere's holistic approach is going to be debunked in any sort of way, but fabrials need to first be explained within the Rosharan System, within the SA books, before they get attached to the general theory of Realmatics. Attempting to explain them with information gained from other books isn't necessarily 100% correct, but to be used as an indication. Case in point the WoB that @Scion of the Mists provided above. Nightblood isn't a typical case of a Shardblade but it is called a Shardblade nonetheless. In the same way, a Shardblade isn't a typical case of fabrial (we know as much at least) but we can't exclude the fact that it can essentially be a fabrial just as well. I don't think we have the complete information on fabrials just yet.
  14. @Scion of the Mists I was more pointing to the fact that there are at least three separate 'races' of beings on Roshar, that have different blood color. We've only seen Greatshells with the valuable kind of gemhearts so far and I wanted to point out that we at least know that big difference between that species and Parshendi. Just because they are both presumably native on Roshar it doesn't mean they of similar anatomy.
  15. I agree with @Gasper it doesn't make sense that Parshendi gemhearts are valuable. BTW, remember that there are three blood colors from the Herald prologue (red orange and violet); I think the valuable gemhearts belong to the crustacean-like creatures that have violet blood, like the Greatshells. The Parshendi have orange blood. Also, if Parshendi were protective of their gemhearts, fearing that humans would steal them, they wouldn't leave their dead unattended. Instead, they would have a proper funeral ceremony, burial or cremation. OB spoiler:
  16. The original nahel spren, the Deadeyes. Okay so think of the Nahel Shardblade (with the First Ideal sworn) as a Physical, Cognitive and Spiritual parts of a spren connected into one piece. When a Shardblade dies, the bond between Physical and Cognitive realm is severed. The Physical part is the Shardblade itself, the Cognitive is the Deadeyes spren in Shadesmar and the gemstone acts as the mediator that connects the two. A Heliodor is used in this case, which I think is very important here both because it's connected to the Flesh Essence (other spren call dead Shardblades corpses) but also because it corresponds to the Bondsmith order, which as we know from Dalinar is capable of connecting Realms. That's what fabrials do really, they bind spren to the Physical Realm, just to recall on their power on a later stage. And the gemstone used is important in each case. Now the fact that an 'oath' is being replaced in the Dead Shardblade case, somehow leads me to think that the Investiture that was supposed to fill this from the Spiritual Realm is no longer of Honor, but of something else. Somehow the Deadeye spren fills that Spiritual aspect without needing any Stormlight. Or maybe there is no Spiritual aspect to it anymore (just like fabrials as far as we know). Not sure what you mean here but Nightblood isn't a normal Shardblade so I don't think it's comparable. Actually, that's brilliant. I don't agree that's irrelevant per se, but it could point into something else in this case. I need to re-read that bit, Thanks! (BTW, I provided that quote to show that there are indeed gemstones on them, not to prove a point about them having to be heliodors) You seem knowledgable in the Cosmere stuff, what is Nightblood then?
  17. The topic here isn't about Honoblades and KR Shardblades. It stands to reason nobody would consider those as fabrials since they don't have a gemstone attached. But I do theorize that Dead Shardblades are essentially made into a fabrial by attaching a gemstone on them. They weren't supposed to work if the Nahel bond was severed, but the process was invented as a workaround. Like a 'short-circuit' bypassing the prerequisite of swearing the KR 1st ideal.
  18. @Jofwu I can't fail to notice that you are attributing just negative things on Veil and Radiant. Nobody is perfect and it comes to reason that Shallan isn't perfect either. By attributing just negative attributes to Veil and Radiant, you're essentially proving the point that this is what Shallan has been doing as well. Pushing back stuff she doesn't like unto 'other people'. But as Wit said 'find the balance, accept the pain, but don't accept that you deserved it', they are parts of her, that is the truth and she should've just faced it, especially before jumping into a marriage. I've also noticed that you claimed a few posts ago that the personas are pretty much static, that's not true. Shallan obviously had different masks in the past. If you go back and re-read WoR you can distinctively notice her, multiple times, changing into different people after being overcome by a sense of 'coldness'. One of those moments she killed Lin as well. Those masks initially didn't even have names, she couldn't even differentiate them as separate parts of her, but they were there nonetheless. And they have been evolving ever since. Even in OB, Veil went through a transformation, by receiving Shallan's compassionate feelings for the people of Kholinar. If it wasn't for Grund's death, Veil wouldn't have 'broken'. It's not that Veil shouldn't have existed in the first place, but Shallan still placed the blame for Grund's death on Veil and then stuffed her at the back of her mind. The truest moment that Shallan was the most whole, she couldn't even identify herself, and 'Shallan' was just one part of her. (OB Loc 15033) : I'm not trying to change your mind, but I have a different interpretation of this, as for a group of other people do as well.
  19. Pretty sure they do actually. Just from a search on the kindle version of Way of Radiance, p782: Also in Way of Kings, p758. Now I just need to re-read the books and come back to you I admit I'm not that versed in the Cosmere to know the metals by heart, but as far as I recall the Stormlight Archive should work as a separate series on its own. So whatever information we know on a Cosmere level is a holistic approach, that doesn't necessarily explain in detail to whatever makes fabrials work. For example, there is no indication that tanavastium doesn't have another name on Roshar. And even if the material is as simple as 'tanavastium', that doesn't exclude it from the fact of it being a necessary component for fabrials. I'm not sure what your initial definition of 'fabrial' is tbh. On the contrary, we tend to simplify knowledge when it's something we do not understand completely. I found this WoB below about tanavastium and it seems it's not as simple as 'Shardblades are made of Tanavastium', there is something more to it there. Certainly, it doesn't address dead Shardblades and the use of gemstones.
  20. @Invocation @IGetLIFTed So we are all reaching the same conclusion here? We need more information because Shardblade and Shardplate could essentially be fabrials. There is some kind of reaction between metal, gemstones and spren that reacts to whatever each fabrial does. We don't know: 1. If the metal matters 2. What spren types can be 'caught' 3. If all spren can be captured in some way or another 4. What gemstone corresponds for each case
  21. I agree that we are missing something vital in how dead Shardblades work, but I also think we are missing something vital in how fabrials work too, maybe Soulcasters as well. Apart from the fact that fabrials work by 'trapping' spren in gemstones, we do not know how they exactly 'release' them in order for the fabrial to work, do we? (I admit I haven't read the passages containing this information as carefully as I should.) Granted I'm not an expert at this stuff, but how I see it is that gemstones act like the mediator of something Cognitive in the Physical Realm, as a conductor perhaps. Maybe the metal used to make fabrials has something to do with the command of 'capturing' and 'releasing'? Maybe that's what the physical dead Shardblade is, that same metal. It certainly seems that the type of gemstones used in each case matters. I think they use heliodors on the dead Shardblades right? The Tenth Essense is linked to Flesh, so maybe that dead Shardblade is indeed a spren's corpse, and the 'attachment' only works with that gem. So, does that make it a fabrial? Now about the Shardplate, I think it's the same exact deal but with different type of spren instead. For example, we see some types of spren appearing mostly in the Cognitive and parts of them in the Physical. Windspren seem to be the exact opposite, they cannot be seen in the Cognitive. So maybe that's the difference between Shardblade spren and Shardplate spren? Sorry, I seem to have added more questions :S
  22. @Scion of the MistsI haven't made a thread on this theory yet. Partly because I wasn't too sure about some of the correlations and partly because I've seen so many Unmade theory threads die in obscurity. I wanted to at least go through the books one more time and see if I can find any more connections between them, just so I could bring all that information out at the same time.
  23. As others have pointed out we are being led by WoBs that it is one of the Unmade that influences the Davar family. I'll take it a step further and place my bet, obviously very prematurely, on the Dustmother Chemoarish. I know it sounds completely out of the blue right now since we've hardly seen anything about her, but let me tell you my train of thought. From the Ten Essenses table, I think the Soulcasting Properties indicate what type of physical material the Unmade 'touch' in order to influence people (Soulcasting needs a point of contact in order to work after all). For example, we've seen the Midnight Essense where oil is very much present (both in Urithiru and Dalinar's vision). Food (pulp, wood, plants, moss) were present in abundance where Ashertmarn was pulling people into his revel. Sja-anat contacts Shallan through a mirror (Quartz, glass, crystal). Nergaoul was trapped in a ruby stone, so his essence is Fire/Spark, the Thrill, the adrenaline kick of the fight. Yelig-nar influences after people swallow a smokestone and they seem to be overtaken by a cloud of dark smoke. Moelach makes people voice Death Rattles at their moment of death, using their almost dead body, the Flesh. Dai-Gonarthis/Black Fisher is linked to the spren that appears in Iris, which rises up from the water and seems to be made of liquid, so I've linked that one to 'all non-oil liquid' and Blood. Ba-Ado-Mishram, the Everstorm is back after thousands of years and has 'awoken' the Listeners by haunting their gemhearts(Bone/Rock and stone) with Fused spirits. So by this rough estimation, I was left with Chemoarish and the elements of Translucent gas/air and Nails/Metal. So, from the Coppermind, one of the little information we have about the Dustmother is that the people of Bavland swear by the Dustmother's name. Bavland was a small mining region in the nation of Jah Keved. Why would miners swear by the Dustmother's name? Hmmm, maybe because they need metal to make pickaxes and other mining tools. Incidentally, the Davar household was also involved in mining, to the point that Lin used to Soulcast in order to cover profits. He also went through the trouble of making daggers for his sons and a pendant for Shallan, by Soulcasting, you guessed it, metal. Another hint we get is that Shallan attempts to show off her Bavland accent to Tyn. So, to close up my post, even if I've miscalculated some of the Unmade essences to the corresponding Unmade, there is a small connection between Bavland, Chemoarish, the Davar household, and possibly Metal. So let me put my tinfoil hat on and shout 'Chemoarish!'
