  1. Not a specific incident, but still a bit funny. So, I take chorus in school, and I like to hum/sing under my breath songs we are singing in chorus the rest of the day after that class. Problem is, I only ever remember about 2 or 3 lines from a single song each day, so I just repeat them over and over. I sound like a broken record. Literally.
  2. I always picture Kelsier with grey eyes. Steel grey. Jasnah is another. I picture all of the other SA characters as pacific islander types, but Jasnah always has white skin in my head. It's so weird, especially she's the only one. The others are all more or less accurate in my head.
  3. Percy Jackson & Olympians and the Kane Chronicles are good, but I highly recommend not reading Magnus Chase. I read the first two books, and they are awful. Truly awful. Heroes of Olympus is okay.
  4. The thing is, though, that it took the Lord Ruler a few centuries to stamp out all religion. You seem to be claiming that the Legion did it all in 50 years or so. I'd expect to see a lot more resistance than what you have. Also, on the angels topic, using angels as morally ambiguous characters goes against the basic concept of angels. To tell the truth, it just feels off to me.
  5. It's good. Not spectacular, but definitely good. However, the whole created-by-dragon-gods seems a bit too similar to Eberron, and your use of metaphysics... well, in both d&d and real theology, angels are definite beings of good. And your take on souls, while unique, doesn't really fit into a d&d-style fantasy setting. However, the worlds themselves... a lot of stuff to work with there. On Arcus, is the world completely dominated by the Legion? I'd guess that there is quite a number of resistances and such, especially religious or socio-politic-ideology based ones. Work on the worlds a little, and see what pops up.
  6. Well, if he ever wants a swamp culture with good food and music, then I nominate for him to drop Lafayette, La in the cosmere.
  7. Thanks. I hadn't thought about the Vulcan stereotype, I'll have to be careful not to just copy it. Shouldn't be too hard, the bright-siders (am going to find a better name for both, eventually) aren't emotionless husks. They do have emotions, which they display under some circumstances (like parties, or recreational activities), but not under serious circumstances (the science lab, workplace, etc.). Also, both men and women tend to wear their hair cut short (pixie cut, normal guy styles) and prefer shirts and knee-length pants. The bright side tends to be a bit hot, after all, whereas the darkened side tends to be colder. Both races have silvery-grey eye color. Well, I've never been in Creation Daily before, but I'd go for it. If it's interesting and at least partially original, then it likely counts. Although, given the creativity of the official campaign settings (which I'v only ever read about), I'd love to read your setting.
  8. Wow, so many good ideas! Anyway, I have a few of my own. Okay, so there is moon, roughly the size of our's, that appears silver-white in color. it is tidally locked in orbit around its planet, again, like our moon. But, it supports life. Including humans. (the planet does too, but I'm building it with my sister. the moon is a surprise for her). Originally, this moon has no life, but was colonized but humans. Then a catastrophe happened that destroyed most of the humans' knowledge and hyper-evolved the other lifeforms. Now, the humans have regained most of their lost technology and have built new civilizations unique to them, of which there are two. The first race lives on the bright side of the moon. They have light brown skin and black hair, which may contain steel-grey highlights (They kind of resemble the OB endpages picture of Shalash). They are very logical, analytically minded. Scientists. They do not have much art or music, and do not have a real religion. Rather, they believe, by way of a lot of reasoning, that there must be something outside of space and time, which created space and time. Maybe a god, maybe something else. But that's all theoretical to them, and doesn't really matter. Instead, they spend their time unraveling the mysteries of math and science. The other culture on the moon is almost the complete opposites of the first race. They have very pale, white skin, and curly, smokey-silver hair that they typically wear down past their shoulders (both men and women do this). They are more romantic than their logical neighbors, having strong beliefs in abstract concepts like love, honor, chivalry, and heroics. They do a lot of poetry and music, especially vocal & pure instrumental (lot of orchestras and such). They have a firm belief that whatever god(s) are out there, must care for humans. Even if they've never seen any evidence of this. Annnd that's all I have. And I am now nearing my bedtime. Anyway, what do you think? Good, bad, okay? Feedback please!
  9. 75% Truthwatcher 63% Elsecaller 32% Lightweaver 22% Skybreaker 3% Bondsmith 3% Dustbringer Apparently, I should be either a Truthwatcher or an Elsecaller. It fits, I guess. I like to research stuff, but rarely share what I know. And I would have a high chance of becoming one if I ever went to Roshar.
  10. Okay, so I have an interest in biology and evolution, and I like learning about life on Roshar because of it. However, I was going over some stuff and realized, humans and Listeners must share a recent common ancestor on the evolutionary family tree. My reasoning: 1) The first, and most obvious, is that they have a very similar body structure. Oh, there are some differences, but both are bipedal, with two legs directly below the torso, two arms, and a head, all in the same place and with the same general outline. The problem with this is that it could just be parallel evolution, like with felines and nimravids (an extinct group of carnivores which look very much like saber-toothed cats). But there is some more evidence, though its more hard science. 2) Hybridization. This is a key factor. In order for two species to have hybrid offspring (horse+donkey=mule), they must be related to a certain degree (I think they must be in the same family or order, but would need to reread my bio notes to be sure). Hence, a horse and cow will not have offspring with each other. A horse will only hybridize with another species of equine. Therefore, humans can only hybridize with another hominid. Which means that Listeners must be a species of hominid, because both Horneaters and Herdazians are known to have Listeners ancestry. 3) Even more than this, two species must have the same number of chromosomes in order to have fertile offspring. Horse and donkeys have different numbers of chromosomes, which is why mules are sterile. Animals with the same number of chromosomes typically share a genus. For instance, house cats have the same number of chromosomes as several other species of small cats, which is where we get the ocicat breed, among others. Therefore, Listeners likely share the same genus as humans since they have had fertile hybrids in the past (again, Horneaters and Herdazians). Conclusion: humans and Listeners very closely related, since they have fertile hybrids with each other. I suspect, depending on the amount of time available, that either Adonalsium itself or the natural Investiture/spren caused a kind of accelerated evolution that turned the humans into Listeners. Moreover, I propose the scientific name Homo audiere for Listeners.
  11. I think there's a theory floating around somewhere that Bavadin isn't human, she's some kind of hordleling-style hive mind being? Not sure if that helps, but there you go.
  12. This story is brilliant. Thanks for posting it.
  13. I agree, bacon is awful. In any form, and bacon-flavored stuff is even worse.
  14. Is there a transcription floating around anywhere? I would love to read it.
  15. Kelsier could be Harmony's servant, and the reason he isn't on Scadrial during Era 2 is because he is on Roshar with Hoid.
  16. Is there a transcription for the reading of Skyward? Please?
  17. I have school tomorrow, and will likely not get the book until the weekend. So I will spend the rest of this week ignoring my teachers and reading the forums instead, trying to find out what happened. Once I get it, I will spend the next few hours in my bed reading.
  18. I want to see Jasnah meet Kaladin, because it seems like there'll be a clash of personalities between them. Also, Jasnah when she discovers that Renarin and Dalinar are Radiants too.
  19. Heh, anyway, Soulcasting Surgebinders have a Shardblade to fight with. But Fabrial Soulcasting isn't likely to be much use in melee.
  20. I didn't know that nickel and cobalt are magnetic... and I was hoping to avoid just using an imaginary metal.
  21. Sorry to disappoint, but WoB says that Kelsier would win. Questioner Kelsier vs. Kaladin, who wins? Brandon Sanderson Kelsier is meaner. Kelsier is sneakier. Raw power - I'm not sure, but I'm gonna go with Kelsier. If its on a battlefield, Kelsier doesn't win. If its off the battlefield, Kelsier wins. Kaladin is a soldier. He can fight a war and fight with a team and he can win a battle. Kelsier can sneak into someones house and stab them. https://wob.coppermind.net/basic_search/?query=kelsier+kaladin Arcanum is a wonderful thing, isn't it?
  22. So, I am designing an imaginary world with my sister, and I told her that'd I'd handle most of the in-depth science stuff. I got most of that down, but I just ran into a problem. See, this planet has a circumference of 16,400 miles, much smaller than Earth, and a gravity of 9.75m/s^2. Which means its core has a combination of iron and some other, denser metal. I could go on without this info, but it is bugging me a lot. So, I turn to the science-lovers of 17th Shard for help. Could some people who know more about geology than me figure this puzzle out? Please? Also, the composition of the crust and atmosphere are pretty much the same as Earth, if it helps.
  23. Um, @Calderis, Jasnah is an Elsecaller, which means she doesn't need a fabrial to Soulcast. She wasn't using the gems, except to supply Stormlight. Fabrials, I believe, don't work at range.
  24. Awesome! I like the first few chapters of your original story, but stopped about when it got to the elf-king's appearance. This redo of it sounds great. Although, if you want feedback, I'd say that you might want to have a bit more description of your characters in there. Like, what does Hewn look like, other than a large, muscular statue? Most books have an early-on description of the hero, you might want to put one in for Sam. What does the elf look like, both when he first appears, and after he gets blood in his face (does it burn him? Was he wearing an illusion that made him more handsome?). And Rose need description, too. This problem was something I noticed in both drafts, so I thought I'd say something. If you find this paragraph unfriendly or something, and don't want this sort of thing, then just tell me. Either way, I'll be following this thread.
  25. So, I found this WoB in Arcanum (link: https://wob.coppermind.net/basic_search/?query=kelsier+wax, it is number 18): Question We've had great topics and discussions about this. If all of your characters were in a death match, who would win? Brandon Sanderson Honest truth is Kelsier. This is because of most of the characters, Kelsier is the one that is ruthless enough to get what he wants. Others would not be as ruthless. Kelsier as a character is very interesting to me. My kind of pitch on him to myself was he would be the villain in most stories. Kelsier in a lot of stories being told, in a lot of books that I would write, he's the villain but in this world, at this time, it is what the world needs and he is the hero. That's why I say Kelsier. Which means, Kelsier wins. Period.
