Largely Baseless Theory: F!Electrum will prove quite useful
alder24 replied to Stormtide_Leviathan's topic in Mistborn
What is an intent in Cosmere? It isn't something spiritual, it's your will to do something while expecting certain outcomes. If you know you can burn metals - you have intent now when you want to burn them (your body knows that too and can provide that intent, like with Vin or pewter healing). You can spike someone if you know metals can steal stuff - just knowing that and being willing to do that gives you intent. Tapping metalmind requires intent, knowledge that something is a metalmind, which you can access and tap/store (as clearly visible in BoM epilogue, when Wax is examining the coin-Coppermind). The only way I see it working with Feruchemy is in the same way Coppermind works - all and nothing. You store it all permanently in the metalminds, and tap it all back. It doesn't make sense to "tap intent 10x" or "store intent for an hour". And because many times for intent to work you need to know what's gonna happen - that's exactly what memories and Copperminds do. You already can store intents in Feruchemy - just dump your entire knowledge of Feruchemy into Coppermind and then you're unable to use metalminds as for you those are just some boring pieces of metal. You won't even know there is a charge stored inside. So no, Electrum doesn't store intent, because we already kind of have that in Feruchemy - Copper. Store all your knowledge about invested art, and you don't have intent anymore, because you don't even know it's possible. -
What do you mean non-human? Animals? Not possible generally, they lack sufficient intelligence to use powers even if they got them somehow. Non-human intelligent species like Singers, Kandra or Sho-Del? Fully possible and we've already seen Kandra using Metallic Arts in SoS. To use metalminds you either need to be a Feruchemist (by birth or Hemalurgy), or have unsealed Malwish metalminds. It's just invested art, like any other. Note: Below in my post I'm using the term "human level" meaning not just humans, but all kinds of sapient, humanoid species like Singers, Kandra or Sho-Del etc. A normal animal would need to become really intelligent, comparable to human levels, to be able to use invested arts given to them - you can do that with Hemalurgy but that's a brutal way. Chasmfiends or Ryshadium are still not intelligent enough to be on a human level. They have above animal intelligence, but they are still not sapient to do that. Mistwraiths are mentally stunted people. They have a mental blockade. I would say for them it's also impossible. Spren - True Spren should be able to do that. They are intelligent and sapient, and as seen by Syl in early chapters of WoK, they can use some simple Surges. Lesser spren aren't sapient, they aren’t intelligent enough. But they are a piece of raw investiture, using invested arts, especially genetic ones, might be different for them. What you need for this to work is a human level intelligence. You can achieve that through different means. One is Hemalurgy, have your squirrel being spiked by a copper spike or two, giving it enough intelligence. Second is being a Kandra in a squirrel's body - they're either on some mission, or they've liked being a squirrel so much, that they've stayed like that for centuries and they've forgotten how to switch back or change their body to create a human-like vocal cords. Thirdly make it a squirrel that lives/lived on Roshar and had entered a symbiotic bond with some kind of spren that increased its intelligence to human-levels. Lastly, Tress spoilers: Or ignore it and have fun, that's always an option.

Well, Malwish don't have Allomancy giving metallions, and not every obvious Feruchemical power is used by Malwish. It seems there are limitations to medallions that we don't know about yet. No. Just like in regular compounding, you get a surplus of attributes, in this case innate investiture which gives you A-pewter, that you can store in a metalmind again. The investiture in metalminds serves as a key to investiture coming from SR, telling it what power it should provide. You get more or less 10x the time what you've stored. Medallions are different from metalminds. They have an identity of their own, a life force. They are a little bit alive, thus they likely form a connection/bond with you, which gives you the ability to draw from metalminds.

Issues with the chronology of the Iriali (No SA5 Previews)
alder24 replied to JPGU's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Who told you that by the time of RoW Foil studies Aethers on Lumar and not on some other planet? There are multiple Aether planets in Cosmere. He might study Aethers in other places and then he moved to Lumar to study the parasitic strain of Aethers. Moreover the way this passage in Ars Arcanum is written seems to suggest something different: In Tress we see him having a great deal of control over Aethers, being able to create his habitat under Aethers spores. When Khriss is writing this (unknown date) Xisis still has not achieved his goal of controlling Aethers, thus he might be unable to settle underneath the seas. This implies that he first needs to accept Khriss' theories, learn how to control Aethers, then move to the Lumar seas, because without control over Aethers, he can't build his palace underneath the spores. Truthfully this is all open to interpretation. I've always been skeptical of the idea of two separate groups of Iriali migrating with the same ideology. There is certainly something going on with their migration and their religion is very specific about it. Having two different groups of Iriali jumping around totally different planets is weird in my opinion, and stretches too much. They all have to attend all seven lands before they will become One again, but there are two different sets of seven? In TLM there is mention of Iraili presence on Scadrial, which seems to indicate that Scadrial is one of the Lands on their Long Trail. Would that mean there are 3 groups of Iriali? TLM ch 32: Admittedly there is very little information on Iriali and Xisis. They aren't important now, they will be in the future. It’s hard to say something for certain right now, all is possible. We’ll have to wait and see, or ask Brandon and find out. -

I don't think so. They are lower than servants, lower than slaves - it's a disgrace for a noble to take an interest in them. Jasnah, a princess of the most powerful country in the world, is a devoted atheist, which doesn't look good for the Vorin church. It is a direct threat to their influence, so they tried to make peace with her, convert her back to Vorinism or at least join one Devotary and pretend to believe. WoK ch 28 Dalinar and Navani's conversation: Highly unlikely. The Diagram is a new thing, a few years old. Those doors are likely far older than that. Plus it would be really stupid to carve a secret Diagram on public doors. It's probably some image or text referring to Heralds.

Well, that guy's head exploded. Not just his jaw, his head just exploded. That's a lot of force. I think VIn could replicate what Kaladin did in the arena. But it would be even more dangerous to her - a Shardplate is much harder than human bones. Those two feats might be even comparable.

Chromium not cadmium. It's a paired alloy of chromium in Metallic Arts. "Nicrosil is a nickel alloy containing about 14.4% chromium, 1.4% silicon, and (in some sources) 0.1% magnesium." -Wikipedia. And what would Nomad do with raw nickel, chromium and other elements? Nothing, he doesn't have any forge in his pocket. It's easier to get proper nicrosil than play with alloying. Base 16 metals aren't used only by Scadrians, they have Cosmere wide importance. They have effect on investiture, they are used on Roshar in Fabrial tech, on Lumar and in other places. It's not just Scadrial.

Good idea? Sure, let's divide our nation in half and give them a reason to betray us during the Desolation, because that's what killing Sadeas did. It almost led to total disaster during the battle of Thaylen Field, and later caused Kholins to lose control over the warcamps for an entire year. By your words, Adolin as a well trained staff officer, who does the same calculations as Dalinar, shouldn't have done that. Dalinar wouldn't do that ever. But he did. Not because he knew it would be fine, but because rage and emotions made him lose control. Yes, that's my point! Adolin sees this as a total victory, he hoped to persuade at least 1 Honorspren - and there are willing Honorspren who might join him. How much, we don't know, but as Blended said, Maya's words exposed even bigger problem - Surges are more dangerous. But Dalinar? Yes, he wants more Honorspren, but by this WoB he hoped for much more. For him it's just "minor success". Not to mention Adolin is even more devoted to Maya and won't abandon her to become a Radiant, like Dalinar wants. That's the difference. Go back and read Dalinar and Adolin's conversation in RoW ch 21. It's brilliantly written, it clearly shows the division between them, Adolins overwhelming emotions and how much he struggles not to lose control in front of his father. And now Adolin returns from the mission he considers to be a great success, just to learn that it wasn't good enough for his father? The division between them will only grow. It doesn’t mean they will immediately jump to each other’s throats, it means they might grow further apart.

Hemalurgy and the clinically insane.
alder24 replied to Tamriel Wolfsbaine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It's more to that. He hates the way Harmony treated him and pushed him towards Wax's current role, he hates being Harmony's sword, he hates that Lessie died twice. Wax not wearing his earring is the manifestation of his feelings and it represents him stepping away from the Path. It depends who you were to ask. Set might say otherwise. Yes. Harmony doesn't talk to people, even with Pathians who "pray" to him. He respected Wax's wish and he doesn't speak or even listen to him anymore. It seems like the same is going on with Kel, because Kel had to meet with Harmony and didn't just start talking with him. Kel being a Sliver makes him more resilient to Shard's influence, this plays a role too. Some. Trellium spike but that exposes you to Autonomy. Maybe lots of aluminum around you. But generally there is not much you can do. Being highly invested helps. Yes to Breaths (lots of Breaths), hard maybe to aluminum. -
That was almost 9 months ago. I don't even remember that. But you should have scrolled 2 posts down, where I corrected myself: It's not your physical strength (not the one from F-pewter) that's changed, it's your body's ability to uphold added weight that changes. It's not like your muscles get stronger, you can punch harder with this added strength or something like that. It's the magic of Feruchemy that siphons a little bit of investiture from weight and supports your body so you can stand up. It still makes you slower (iirc), but you can become very heavy and not collapse under your own weight. Just a little clarification.

So why did he kill Sadeas if he's such a well trained staff officer, who makes the same calculations as Dalinar? He acted out of emotions once, he didn't regret it, he can do it again. Emotions can overwhelm even the most logical person. Adolin has a lot of repressed emotions inside of him. Adolin might see the result of his mission in a different light, see a positive side where Dalinar can't because they both think in different ways. 2 great officers can disagree on how to lead a battle, Adolin and Dalinar can disagree on how successful the mission was.

The change happens, but it's like with Kal and Syl - only for a short time, not permanently. Coppermind on Szeth:
-
I can see that happen but not like that. Adolin still loves his father and wouldn't fight against him. If Odium instead reveal himself to Adolin and convince him that now as Taravangian he holds the power to stop the war entirely, that he achieve his goal of saving Roshar but can't as long as the oath is binding him, while using Adolin's emotions, he might convince him to stand as his champion but not to fight, but to convince Dalinar to either surrender or break his word. Then Dalinar would be forced to make an impossible choice, either he surrenders/breaks the oath or he kills Adolin. That's not likely to happen, it's very convoluted and ignores that Adolin mistrusts Taravangian, but still it's a possibility. Yes, and that makes their conflict even more interesting and impactful! It doesn't need to lead to civil war, just political division.

Sure let's kill a significant portion of Scadrian population and torture the remaining one. What can go wrong? Few issues. The Mists were investing people during Snapping. You would likely need this nicrosil spike to contain more than 1 innate investiture charge in it, which would complicate the matter a little bit. Secondly, even with this spike in them, those spike-snapped Misting would be of low power. If you remove the spike after snapping, they might either lose power entirely or functionally lose their power (as it would be vestigial, super weak). That's not very useful. Spikes need to remain in people to make this useful at all. When searching for this WoB, I've found those ones: Which explains in a bit technical way why Set was unable to grant permanent powers with their spikes. They essentially squeezed all that innate investiture from 20-30 people into one spike, each piece of a soul was coded to a different power. The spike simply went nuts not knowing what to do, it may give one power which was dominant among all pieces, but eventually the interference of others shuts off the power for good. If you're able to read spirit webs and Connections, then you can choose people whose innate investiture is already coded to give the same power, let say A-steel, make a spike and give it to a person which also is coded with A-steel. It should work now, even with conflicting identities as all of the spike charge is coded to one power, the spike knows what to do. Eventually blanking identity also blanks assigned power (if this information is stored in identity). Either way I see new possibilities of using Hemalurgy to make Metalborn- if you can read spirit webs.

Why can Zahel see Syl but Azure cannot?
alder24 replied to Soulcaster05's topic in Cosmere Discussion
He can't see her but sense her, Zahel confirmed it in RoW ch 15: -
Cadmium? Alloyed with tin? Why? Cadmium steals Temporal Allomantic powers. He would need a nicrosil spike to steal part of his soul directly or duralumin to entirely remove his Connection to Dawnshard (that likely to be too much, it could be deadly but it would make him useless to the Night Brigade).

What? I didn't suggest they might fight in a literal sword fight to death. Even @Stew didn't suggest that. It's about having an open conflict, some disagreement, verbal, moral, or other kind of non-physical fight. A split in the family. Why do you think so? She went to the city to beg them to surrender and was imprisoned by them. I think it's tragic, not treacherous. Once again, I reference the "it's all about Dalinar" feeling that Adolin has. Adolin might consider he achieved a different kind of victory than it was planned at first, still very important, a chance to bring Deadeyes at least partially back to life - something that he deserves credits for. His father might be dismissive of this because he doesn't think it's as important as having new Radiants right now. During RoW Adolin didn't want to disappoint his father, but now Adolin actually feels he accomplished something big and important, but instead of acknowledgement Dalinar will tell him "it's not good enough"? More tension. RoW ch 36:
-
True, but in the WoB Brandon talks that both spren would have to agree and Venli's Voidspren didn't agree to share Venli with Timbre - it's held captive by Timbre.
-
Cough cough Gavilar cough cough. Yes. Right now Dalinar and Adolin are on very shaky grounds. Adolin loves his father, but there is a tension growing between them because of what Dalinar did to Evi, and what Adolin did to Sadeas. RoW ch 21: I don't agree on both terms. Renarin and Dalinar's relations are better now than ever, they are better than Adolin's relations with Dalinar right now. RoW ch 54: Jasnah and Navani's relations are difficult but still loving and respectful to each other. They have a different relationship which works for them. I don't think Jasnah is dismissive of her mother. There wasn't much of them together in RoW. But Renarin isn't a Truthwatcher, at least not in the classical sense. He is something new, because Glys is corrupted. We don't know what his Oaths are and how much about Truth he is, but there are some changes. Yes, he has his own affairs, he might have seen Taravangian's death in one of his visions (or at least that's how he interpreted it) because of the last letter he left to him. But either way, this is still too little for his relations with his father to worsen significantly. Nah. Dalinar, who married his own "sister" (Navani - which is a taboo in Vorin society) wouldn't care. He is tolerant. Jasnah would care even less, she is asexual and she doesn't want to discuss sexuality. I think they all would be happy for them. Overall, I don't think there is any indication for incoming conflict between Renarin and Dalinar or Jasnah and Navani. They currently have a very stable relationship, sharing much love and needed support with each other, especially Renarin is finally understood by Dalinar. Even if Renarin doesn’t share every vision of his with his father, Dalinar trusts him. But the tension is growing between Adolin and Dalinar, and a new WoB points at this as well: Adolin might once again feel that "it's all about Dalinar" and feel that Dalinar doesn't consider what Adolin achieved to be something major - for Adolin it means a possibility of helping Maya (while Dalinar wants Adolin to join an Order and get rid of her). The conflict between them seems to be rising. RoW ch 21:
-
Shallan. She's bonded to both Pattern and Testament. While she broke her bond with Testament, she still is bonded to her and can summon her as a Shardblade. It also seems like she is in the process of reconstructing her Oaths with Testament, because between the time she broke her bond and bonded Pattern, she remembers using Stormlight and Surges. RoW ch 115:
-
I get that. What I wanted to say is that's not how celestial bodies manifest in CR. Those are places, stars too, they manifest as an area in CR. Moons don't appear as glowing orbs in the sky in CR, they are actual lands you can go to and visit - the more people think about them, the bigger those lands in CR are. Thanks. I've missed that. Still, I find this metaphor to be very close to reality - the land Kelsier was walking on is a reflection of the PR, what he is experiencing is CR, so why couldn't the sun be a representation of SR? Fair, but maybe the sun appears in places highly invested, where Shards reside? What I wanted to say (before I misread the quote) is that we don't know what the sun in CR really is, we have no information about it and we cannot claim for sure that it is one thing excluding others. We don't know. We can only speculate.

How much control over the magic system does a Shard have?
alder24 replied to listerfeend's question in Cosmere Q&A
I have to point out that oaths aren't the limiting factor of Honor's invested arts, bonds are. The first Surgebinders gained powers because spren mimicked what Honor gave to Heralds and they started bonding with people giving them powers. Honor didn't even see that coming. Then Ishar came and formalized them into Orders with spoken Oaths. From WoB above: -
Sure, find me such animal then
-
First his Torment would prevent this. Secondly it shreds your soul to pieces, even if you can survive it, the damage done to you is huge, and it takes more than you want. Thirdly, this "hole" in your soul allows Shards and other invested beings and arts to affect you directly, it makes you susceptible to all forms of investiture. Hemalurgy is just a bad idea. Also I'm not sure if his Torment regrows. At first he had to keep touching the sphere which consumed investiture, but later I lost track of that sphere and if his Torment would regrow if not "stored".
