  1. The ambient magic on Threnody is not a result of a shard's power. Also, as the essay says, Ambition splintered elsewhere, implying that it didn't leave any power on Threnody, but broke completely somewhere else.
  2. Makes sense. I don't think the Heralds are physically on Braize, but only their cognitive shadows, since Brandon has said that they are reborn into a new body every Desolation.
  3. You are correct that the defining it as storing investiture is vague. However, it is technically correct, as the spiritual elements which give someone the ability to use a manifestation of investiture is composed of investiture, which you are storing. However, as far as we're aware, there isn't a concise way to say it, since magic is not an in-Cosmere term, so investiture is the shortest and best answer there is. For your second part, that is what I said; nicrosil feruchemy can be used to store the ability to use any manifestation of investiture. However, in order to store it, you must first possess it as a result of another process, and that is what I was getting at, since your suggestion seemed to imply that you thought that you could tap any feruchemical charge in a nicrosilmind for any manifestation of investiture.
  4. That's also a possibility. I was taking Cosmere-aware to be aware that there is more to existence than just the physical world you're on. So awareness of the three realms and that there are other worlds. I don't think it necessarily requires being aware of shards. EDIT: Found something which seems to more or less state Brandon's definition of Cosmere-aware He seems to be saying what I thought. Cosmere-Aware is knowing that other worlds exist in the Cosmere. Doesn't say anything about realmatics theory, though I imagine that factors in slightly.
  5. "the scholars there" seems to be generically referring to scholars on Nalthis, not the Five Scholars. There would be no need for the term "there" if he were referring to the Five Scholars, since they are only based on Nalthis. In addition, he probably would've referred to them as the Five Scholars if he were actually talking about them. Yes, "how close scholars there were to being Cosmere aware" could've been said, but it sounds really awkward, since you are using "scholars there" to refer to a particular group of scholars, those on Nalthis. Therefore, the use of "the" in front seems to be correct. Overall, I don't see a contradication in WoB. The Five Scholars were Cosmere-aware and could worldhop. The regular scholars are not, and cannot, but they are close to being so.
  6. You would need a lot less than 10% the mass of the Earth. A moving train is enough, though a carriage is not, so that should give a rough estimate of what mass range is necessary.
  7. That only happened because nicrosil feruchemy was used to store every power. The Bands of Mourning were not just made by a single soulbearing ferring, it required someone holding all the powers, or a combination of people who collectively had access to all the necessary powers. You cannot just tap a nicrosil metalmind and turn the charge into the ability to use a manifestation of investiture of your choosing, you can only tap the ability which was stored into it.
  8. Possibly. The current vessel could probably just undo the changes in order to stop that though.
  9. 1) It's theorized that Lift asked the Nightwatcher for a boon which would prevent her from changing while the world changed around her. She assumed that the Nightwatcher would make her remain the same age eternally. In Edgedancer though, it's confirmed that she is physically aging, but it's possible that her mental development is frozen, so intellectually she will always be 11-12. The ability to metabolize food into stormlight likely has to do with that, as Wyndle says, she's more into the cognitive realm than normal people. The curse then is questionable, but the fact that her body still ages may be it, as then eventually she will be a 12 year old mind in a 30 year old body. 2) No real opinion or info on that. 3) The spren bonds really are about changing the spiritweb, and by extension the cognitive and physical of the host. The type of spren determines what the bond does. In the case of KRs, the spren were chosen to make bonds which were designed to give the hosts surgebinding powers, as well as the power to take up stormlight. In the case of Listeners, the spren bond grant them the difference forms. In the case of Greatshells, the spren bond gives them the ability to support their great size. Finally, with Ryshadium's, they get increased sentience. I think the crux of the matter is that surgebinding powers are not physical, as you asked. They delve into far greater things over all three realms, as they are changing the fundamental forces which govern the Cosmere.
  10. The problem with that is that you wouldn't be able to obtain the ability to bind the surge of abrasion and the surge of gravitation at the same time naturally, unless you manage to either obtain two honorblades or attract two spren of the necessary order. Other than that, it would be pretty impressive. Stopping wouldn't be a problem since you can just lash yourself in the other direction.
  11. Why wouldn't they regain their body afterwards? All other ascended beings regain their physical body when they cease to be ascended. The only person who we've seen not have a physical body afterwards is the person who ascended without a physical body.
  12. It's possible for someone to be able to have only one surgebinding power, but I don't think it would naturally occur. I think to have that happen, it would have to be as a result of another manifestation of investiture to artificially transfer the power. Also, the surges are naturally paired, so having a single surgebinding power would probably be violating the natural underlying laws of Roshar, therefore making it harder. Mistborn
  13. True, but as we've seen with Preservation and the Well of Ascension, a shard can separate enough investiture from themselves to give to someone in order to allow them to ascend while still holding their power.
  14. I don't think anything would happen to either person. After all, we have a case of it happening many times. Over the history of Scadrial, many Heroes of Ages have ascended using the power of the Well of Ascension, while Leras still held Preservation. Leras didn't die, they didn't die, or at least Rashek didn't, so I honestly think nothing significant happens, at least with the Well of Ascension. The thing, they aren't ascending the shard, they're just ascending using some of the power of the shard. There is some connection to the shard, but not to the main power of the shard, just a specifically isolated portion of it. The case of Vin ascending Preservation while Kelsier was holding doesn't really tell us anything, because Kelsier gave it to her. Overall though, it's possible that there are difference cases based on how the investiture used to ascend was obtained, and the holder's connection. I can see a possibility of someone ascending a part of a shard's power while somehow having a stronger connection to the shard, in which case they might be able to merge with the greater power and cause it to reject the holder. However, I see this as unlikely, as a holder's connection strengthens over time, so it would have to be a new holder. MS:SH
  15. I'll be honest, this feels like an oxymoronic statement. I don't think you could suddenly snap a collar around their neck out of nowhere. Also, I doubt they store when there's someone standing with a heavy collar at the ready. Honestly, you're overthinking this too much. Just grab a friend of theirs as well, and threaten to torture them, or do torture them, unless the brute taps and lets you put on a collar. Returning to the original post, can you explain how this would work? Why would the brutes not immediately turn around and kill the guy who had trapped them? Or at least, never return. Overall, this is a really cool concept, the idea of torturing brutes in this manner using their feruchemy, don't get me wrong. It's just impractical. You have to spend too much effort regulating anything, plus it's not a good torture if the victim can kill themselves if they want. It would be so much more efficient if you just keep them away from the pewter, and torture them the regular way.
  16. I don't think so. Cognitive presence requires actual cognitive entities in the location. Observing a place isn't the same, the cognitive aspect of the shard is still localized elsewhere.
  17. This is true. Chances are that they even have more than one. Consider, the Rose Domain has at least two that we know of, and the Fjordell Domain has at least four.
  18. Chances are that Old Magic isn't a manifestation of investiture like Surgebinding, Fabrials and Voidbinding, but rather is something more along the lines of something with a massive source of investiture directly changing people at will.
  19. What? I don't understand what you're referring to?
  20. An interesting thought. I'm not sure exactly how I feel about it. I think though that I'm weighing more towards disagree than agree. The main reason, is that the Heralds are clearly more than what their Honorblades gave them. Even without their blades, the Heralds demonstrate an unaging quality, possibly precluding to immortality. Also, Taln possessed higher reflexes than normal. I don't think it is impossible to assume that at a base, they are enhanced over regular humans, before considering whatever enhancements Honorblades bestow upon them. There is also the fact that in answer to your question, it appears that the Honorblades are a part of the Oathpact. That's why the Heralds left behind their blades at the end of the Last Desolation, because they believed it would sunder their connection to the Oathpact. In addition, it seems unlikely to me that any spren would be willing to enable someone to reach the level of power that the Heralds held. That's why they created the system of ideals and words, along with having each KR have a spren to guide them, so that the power could not be abused. Remember how Syl reacted when she observed the Honorblade, and made the observance that whoever wielded its power would be able to act unchecked. I'm not going to lie though, there is cause to support this theory. Brandon has implied that the KRs were, to some extent, caught in the Oathpact as well. As such, I don't see it as impossible that there could be a mechanism to allow a KR to advance to be something along the lines of a Herald within the system of the Oathpact. We've already seen possible evidence that Honor was sloppy with the creation of the Oathpact anyways, by way of making it so that anyone can gain power from an Honorblade. It seems likely that the intention was for them to only be held by the Heralds. I think there was something else I wanted to say, but it's late so I can't remember. Side note though, nothing is giving people surges, just the ability to bind surges. Yes nitpick.
  21. Hi "friend", allow me to clean your insides with my knife. Can I interest you in our new, 100% deadly, strawberry jam?
  22. I believe that storing, relatively speaking, requires conscious thought, at least to start and end it. Therefore, I don't see why a feruchemist, having woken due to being assaulted, would start with storing their strength. It seems like the opposite would be more likely to occur. In addition, the change in metals would probably be noticeable as well.
  23. But then they would still have a pewtermind on them so the idea that they could swiftly tap to expand strong enough to break it is viable. You would need a really strong collar, but then that would be heavy which would limit the sneaking part. Also, I'm curious as to why you would need a pewter collar. Wouldn't you want something you can easily remove to prevent them from building up a big charge?
  24. I was thinking of this too However, if you swap out the pewterminds at regular enough intervals, that wouldn't be a problem. The main issue I see is starting the process, since how would you be able to catch a brute initially in this trap?
  25. Exactly what I did the moment I finished catching myself up to date with Cosmere. Definitely why I'm able to pull random WoBs out of my chull because I remember reading them at some point.
