  1. Power the curse Existence between life and death
  2. Anyway, if Investiture in the human soul (Preservation and Ruin on Scadrial, Endowments on Nalthis in the form of Breaths) comes from the Shard it means that the Shard would be ultimately drained of Investiture (even if Breaths of the dead are somehow recycled and I see no reason they are) because growing population means that there are more and more of humans to supply with Investiture. It would mean that with every new human born Preservation got weaker but this is not the case - Preservation did expend Investiture once to create humans but after that humans gained pieces of Ruin and Preservation from somewhere else (my theory is that from background Investiture converted by Shard's influence on the planet). Odium wouldn't have to fight directly with Shards, he would just have to wait peacefully as human population grows bigger the Shards would starve themselves to death. That is not the case.
  3. "“I had no idea that Kid Wayne was so talented with beer-mat sculptures.”" Meeting in the bar. It sparked several ideas: that Wayne's name is Kid, that it is his nickname (Kid Wayne, like Billy Kid) or is it just a typo and MeLaan is referring like she does to the short-lived mortals: "kid" ?
  4. Yeah, I also thought it could be like that. Billy Kid. Kid Wayne. But of course it could just be a typo and MeLaan was referring to him as a child cause she's several hundred years old. Who knows. (Brandon knows) I guess we have to wait for another print?
  5. I remember something about Navani describing gravityspren. Bindspren are drawn to Full Lashing because...well, it binds things, so I suppose gravityspren may be attracted to Basic and Reverse Lashings.
  6. Wouldn't carapace be simpler than cloth? It was part of a living thing once so it would take less Breath than clothes, but it is distant enough from living thing that Breaths aren't stuck (as with Lifeless).
  7. Um... being here only for 3,5 months, I have to ask: Is it the correct thread to post random thoughts which I feel don't deserve a separate topic? "Random stuff" in the thread's name implies as much...?
  8. Yeah, I always wondered why honorspren are so different. Not only the issue with windspren connection, but also... Cryptics fit Lightweavers (as they're liespren). But what honor has to do with running on wind? There was a WoB out there that Wyndle would consider himself cultivationspren, so I guess that Windrunner's spren do have another name. Fitting name. Leadershipspren... Protectionspren, for Almighty's sake! It was protecting people what Syl was attracted to, not being honorable (it can be argued that protecting is honorable, but there are tons of honorable behaviours and protecting isn't very high on that list). Liespren were attracted to lies, simple. Anyway, I don't know what to make of the Radiants. Lightweavers fit some kind of the pattern (pun not intended): name: Lightweavers, they do weave light to create illusions their powers are about illusions and transforming their Oaths have to do with truth their spren is liespren attributes: Creativity and Honesty It's all connected. But Windrunners do not have such strong connection: name: Windrunners, they do run on winds their powers are about gravity and pressure their Oaths have to do with protecting (and possibly leading) their spren is honorspren attributes: Protecting and Leading Now, their Oaths and attributes are connected and their name and powers are also connected. But there is no link between these pairs. Spren doesn't fit anything. What protecting has to do with flying? It's odd. I can't discuss other Orders at this point, because we simply know too little.
  9. I don't say that they shouldn't be allowed in Cosmere Theories, but can spoiler topic be tagged as such ("[sH]thread name" or "[boM]thread name") and spoilers in other topics be within spoiler tags ([spoiler ] )? This way those of us who haven't read these yet won't be spoiled and those who want to discuss it are free to do so.
  10. Maybe 'Rayse'? It's more hidden reference, as 'Voidbringer' sounds really... I don't know, it's like naming it 'Lucifer'.
  11. Few years ago, during one of bridge tournaments (small, informal, relaxed one which we played after school) me and my partner paired off with another pair of our friends, so I played with the guy from the other pair and my partner played with the other one. To freshen up our play. Set up: After a good play I would raise my hand to my partner to do a high five. After some time he started doing it with his forehead (so he basically headbutted my hand). Even more time later he would raise his head for me to tap in some sort of head-hand high five. So, he plays with the other guy and after some good play as always raises his head and says "High-five!". The other guy thinks for a moment and then... headbutts him. Yeah, we're all weird in one way or another P.S. Later I will post some stories from sailing camp.
  12. Right, right, I mixed up your comment with the Patrick Star's. But if Nalan follows a previous version of "cosmere laws" (I doubt existence of such a thing), then why did he only recently started murdering Radiants? If back then Radiants were causing Desolations, he surely would have said something like "People, stop bonding with spren!". He is Herald of Almighty, people thought of them as deities, they would have listened.
  13. ...aaaand walked into spoiler-mine again I'm pretty sure spoiler topics have to be posted in respective subforums, or at least tagged as spoilers from BoM or/and MSH.
  14. But Hoid agrees with her. Unless he's lying (I see no reason why) Jasnah is indeed correct. Yeah, I know he's insane, but the question is whether he is just insane or insane AND crazy? ... I hope you understand what I mean.
  15. There's a question to be asked: Why Nalan hunts Surgebinders? Or rather: Why does he believe that Surgebinders may cause Desolation? Let's get a timeline. I'll be puting quotes in spoiler tags. There were no Desolations before humans were on Roshar. At first, Heralds were the only Surgebinders. At one point, spren figured out what Honor did and started bonding humans which resulted in Surgebinders. Heralds became patrons of the Orders, at the same time imposing organisation on them. We know that between Desolations Radiants fighted with some monsters (Dalinar's vision with Midnight Essence). We know that Heralds are sent back to Roshar before Desolation. We know that if they stay too long after Desolation ended, another one will start. Aharietam and Recreance: The Last Desolation was 4500 years ago. There is a connection between Heralds tortured and Desolation. Kalak seems to believe that if Odium cannot torture them to break them, he can't cause a Desolation. After Heralds walked away from Oathpact, Knights Radiant did not leave their posts. Steel stores physical speed. When Recreance happened, one of the soldiers in Feverstone Keep mentioned that Radiants should be fighting devils on the front line. So even after Last Desolation monsters showed up. After Recreance there were probably no Surgebinders (or next to none, since spren turned away from humans). Honor was Shattered after Recreance (or maybe Tanavast survived Shattering long enough. It is nor clear or known.) since it is in one of the Dalinar's visions Modern times: Taravangian believes that Desolation happens when Heralds break under torture and that spren came back because it was to happen. Stormfather forbidden spren (or maybe only honorspren) bonding with humans in fear of Recreance happening again. He has to accept Words, though. Stormfather sent Dalinar visions as demanded by Tanavast. These visions request Dalinar to refind Knights Radiant Spren started bonding humans at least ten years ago (Shallan's childhood) Nalan hunts Surgebinders down because he believes that Surgebinding may cause Desolation. Voidspren started showing up en masse after "Taln" returned to Roshar. But Venli is suspected to bear stormform earlier. True Desolation seems to be triggered by chain reaction: stormspren start hijacking Listeners -> large number of stormform Parshendi exist -> Voidbringers summon Everstorm -> Everstorm circles Roshar carrying more voidspren, triggering more Voidbringers out of formless Parshmen But Radiants existed for a long time after the Last Desolation, until Recreance. When Heralds abandoned Oathpact Jezrien said "There is a chance we might end the cycle of Desolations." But that wasn't their intention, they wanted to get free of the torture. They seem to consider End of Desolations as a side effect, not the primary goal. They know that Odium is somehow bound by their torture and they're afraid he will find a way around them not returning to the Damnation. True Desolation seems to be different to the regular Desolations, but we do not know why. The question is, why would Nalan hunt Surgebinders since they existed before without triggering Desolation? Why is the True Desolation different from the previous Desolation? How is it different? What is the exact connection between Herald's torture and breaking under it, their return, release of voidspren and start of Desolation? Do spren sense Herald's coming near to point of breaking? Discuss, provide more quotes and WoBs you find relevant.
  16. Did Heralds have non-Herald children (important specification, since Shallash is Jezrien's daughter)? If that's true, were their descendants important in the history of Roshar? Are there any living descendants of Heralds?
  17. Why would anyone want it? I mean, Nazi experiments on humans DID push medicine forward, but the experiments itself were so horrible and inhuman that I don't even want to research that topic. I had my share of depression when I read obligatory books for school - those written by survivors of German and Russian camps...
  18. I think that we don't know Wayne's other name. If he has one.
  19. Well, if Nalan meets Shallan, she could be in trouble, but he won't actively look for her. He hunted Surgebinders to stop Desolation, but Desolation is already here. He is going to have a lot of other things on his mind right now. But if he bumps into Shallan and he knows her deeds, he will probably behead her (or try to get her convicted, hard to say).
  20. We need a WoB on the percentage of Metalborn, percentage of Allomancers, percentage of Ferrings... There was something about 16% of population being Metalborn (I'm not sure about this). We do not know how many of them are Twinborns, but let's say that there are 10% of Allomancers and 10% of Feruchemists which gives us 4% of Twinborns. That gives us about 0,625% (1/16 of 10%) of the population everywhere. This means that one person in 160 is a Coinshot. I don't know the age distribution on Scadrial nor do I know when people start actively using their abilities or when they stop... Let's say that old enough and not too old yet make up 75% of the Coinshots. That means that one person in 214 is a Coinshot and is able to use Steelpushing. Now, I don't think everyone wants (or is pressured not to) to take up the job based on Allomantic abilities. For example, Coinshot scholar wouldn't leave his research just to become a messeneger. Let's say 85% of these would use a spikeway. That would leave us with percentage of Coinshots using spikeway in the Elendel, but only if the City and Roughs had the same percentage of Metalborn. I think we can safely assume that there is a higher percentage of Coinshots in the Roughs than in the city. Let's split them 45%-55%. This means that 1/10 of these Coinshots leave the City to live in the Roughs (I think even more, but I'm trying not to overestimate). So that leaves us with the percentage of population in the city actively using spikeway: 10%(percentage of Allomancers)*1/16*75%(age restriction)*85%(pursuing Coinshot abilities)*90%(dropping those born in the city and relocated to Roughs)=0,35859375%. So about one person in 279. That gives us about 17930 people spread probably evenly throughout the 5 million city. Now I don't know anything about urban developing, so I will leave it at this: Would building multiple spikeways for about 0,36% of the people be sensible? Given that they can bounce on virtually anything?
  21. Haven't seen the film, but it's as you say - there is a plot. Similar to Discworld books, amount of absurd is high.
  22. Actually some Compounding combinations are more efficient than the others (not that the Compounding itself is more efficient). For example, double gold gives you unlimited health, but double tin or double pewter gives you not only unlimited Feruchemical attribute but also respective Allomantic power. Not only Pewter Compounder would be able to be constantly super muscular, but he would also be able to back this with Allomantic pewter enhancements. Not only you wouldn't run out of Feruchemical strength, but also you would be Pewterarm... That's a very serious amount of strength you could get. Throw in koloss-blood and you're a very serious threat.
  23. So whenever I'm reading Cosmere Theories non-spoiler thread and see another storming spoiler out in the open, I can rightfully report it? Good. There will be no mercy for these storming spoiler posting cremlings.
  24. IIRC, the Elendel Daily excerpt had somebody complaining about lamposts on his property constantly damaged by Coinshots Steelpushing around. As for the spikeways, there just aren't that many Coinshots for it to be sensible.
  25. After the February 9th: I understand that: spoiler-containing topics can be posted in Cosmere Theories, but have to be marked with [bands Spoilers] or [secret History Spoilers] spoilers have to be within spoiler tags outside of respective subforums But what about people discussing things in some topic in Cosmere Theories (not a spoiler-containg one, so without warnings) and then suddenly talking about spoiler-heavy stuff without spoiler tags? I can't even count the spoilers I have seen. I knew I would have to go dark after six months since MSH passed, as spoilers will be flying left and right, but seriously, even now nobody cares! If this goes on I won't even have to read Secret History to know what's in there! P.S. Shadows Of Self spoilers have to be spoiler-tagged until 6th of April, right?
