Important point: Metals on Scadrial aren't Invested. Souls are (or rather, they're made of Investiture), but the mechanics there aren't quite that cut and dry. Metals glow because that's a unique feature of Scadrial; we haven't seen an equivalent on another world so far, but we're very limited in opportunities to see something like that (as in, we haven't seen the same perspective on any other world), so we can't really be sure on much yet. jW

Yeah, no human being could use more of Preservation's power via Allomancy without being destroyed. I think we're missing a piece of the puzzle for Sliverhood, though, and that it's not merely a matter of reaching Mistpoint, for example. jW

SPOILERS! ---Does Kaladin like Shallan, and Vice Versa?---
Jondesu replied to ChullRider's topic in Stormlight Archive
This is Sanderson. There's no almost about it. It's either deliberately misleading, or deliberately misleading us into thinking it's misleading. I definitely agree that there's something there, but I think it's the type of thing that should blossom into friendship/rivalry, rather than a love triangle. Edit: Kalak's beard, that's an old post I'm replying to! Doesn't matter, though, and I only quoted it because @Rellar was referring to it, so I'm going to stop worrying. jW -
Nice catch, I originally read that on my Kindle and those were completely impossible to make out, but I haven't seen it in subsequent readthroughs in the paperback or my iPad/iPhone either. The levitating guy is weird, looks like a monk who can float, but we've heard of nothing like that… Also interesting to see the spear blocking a sword just below that, and it's not exactly the way I pictured their spears (but makes more sense now than the classic spearpoint I had in mind). I'm assuming from now on that's how all their spears look. jW

I would think that would be Dr Strange, from what I know of him. I'm not exceptionally familiar with his powers, but I would bet some part of it inspired Brandon in creating Megan/Firefight's powers. Scarlet Witch does in fact sound very similar to AonDor to me. jW

Can Investure be destroyed or not? Conflicting quotes.
Jondesu replied to Cartographer7's question in Cosmere Q&A
Where does the Investiture in the souls/spirits of dead people go? Back to the Shard that created them, or else to some other pool of Investiture, or maybe just some type of "cosmere background investiture (CBR)". Same with any part that gets ripped off by Hemalurgy and then lost, I would presume. It doesn't have to go back to the soul, because that's not the actual source of the Investiture in the first place. jW -
I guess it was the confirmation of Jezrien as the Windrunner Herald I couldn't remember seeing stated. Is there a chart or something in the books that states all of those? It's probably one of the images I didn't look at because I have the ebook version and they're all too hard to read. Sounds like my theory's blown out of the water, though. Storms, I thought that motivation made sense! jW

That's a different thing from being Invested, though. An Invested object is an otherwise normal object that has had Investiture placed within it by some means. In Atium's case, though (and all matter on Scadrial), the Investiture was used to form the matter (the Atium itself), but no raw Investiture was then placed into the metal. In other words, it was made from Investiture (converted to matter), but is not still made of Investiture. That means it's not what would be considered an Invested object (like Nightblood, for example, where actual Investiture was forced into the otherwise normal sword). jW

Can Investure be destroyed or not? Conflicting quotes.
Jondesu replied to Cartographer7's question in Cosmere Q&A
Actually, like other magic systems, I would assume that "lost" investiture just returns to the Shard or source. Allomancy isn't destroying investiture, nor is Surgebinding, and I don't see what Hemalurgy does as being different. Surgebinding is actually really close: they lose Stormlight as vapor rising from their skin, but it's not destroyed, it just slips away back into the system. jW -
Can Investure be destroyed or not? Conflicting quotes.
Jondesu replied to Cartographer7's question in Cosmere Q&A
My interpretation is that Nightblood is converting that Investiture into either matter or energy. Investiture, like both matter and energy, can't be created or destroyed, but it can be converted into one of the others and vice-versa. I don't doubt that there could be a way to convert some of that matter or energy back into Investiture, but that would probably at minimum require a Shard, and possibly only Adolnasium could do it (or it might be much easier than I'm thinking). Just because Nightblood is decreasing the amount of Investiture in the Cosmere doesn't mean something else can't be increasing it. :-) jW -
Kingsdaughter613, don't put a slash at all in the first spoiler tag (the last one is right). :-) You're exactly right on splitting that difference too. Slivers are a completely different thing to Splinters, and not just a matter of one being more or less Invested. jW

Do we know for sure that's Jezrien's blade? I've seen that mentioned, but wasn't sure if it was confirmed. I think there was a WoB, I'll look for it. Edit: it doesn't say what I thought. jW
-
Ah, right, thanks. That's true, and if they can't use Stormlight without their blades, that would make it likely that he was the one after all. I do wonder if they're always bonded to the Honorblades in some way (I doubt they could have broken the bonds easily, if nothing else), so it's possible that even if he didn't go back for his blade, he can still use Stormlight or even possibly the Surges themselves, which could throw off all our guessing if so. jW

There's some good reasoning there, but I think Brandon's statement about it not being cut and dry means that there isn't a set "amount" of Investiture to become a Sliver. It's less about that and more about how deeply Connected you become to the Shard, I would expect. That doesn't mean Wax and Marasi became Slivers, since I doubt that, but it does mean we can't just use math like that to figure it out necessarily. jW

Where do we see that? I didn't recall it, I'll have to reread the passage again. jW
-
By the way, I stopped messing with it, but then much later it finally kicked in (I think because I finally restarted, don't have to do that often): it looks bad because I'm not doing it the right way, but it does help, so whenever you can figure out the right way for it to work, it'll be much appreciated. Don't stress yourself about it too much, though, it's a relatively minor concern. :-) jW

Yep, and I suspect it's not who we think it is. Nalan, for instance, I think is just using a Shardblade, not his Honorblade (we never see him use any surges that I recall), and it can't be Taln, because he didn't leave his (he and his blade went to Braize, or wherever the Heralds go between Desolations). Shalash is unlikely, but possible, and we don't know enough about the others right now, even though we've supposedly seen them all, I think. My money's actually on Jezrien, but that he did it out of an almost mad guilt, and when he realized that it didn't matter and he couldn't change the outcome, he descended into a drunken stupor for most of the last 4000+ years. (That's a lot of alcohol, especially if the Herald's physical abilities make getting drunk more difficult. ) jW

That doesn't mean it's actually made of Ruin's Investiture, though. It's sort of like genetics: Atium's Spiritual DNA marks it as a product of Ruin, despite being otherwise a normal metal, and it's that spiritual genetic marker that causes the magic. It's fairly well explained in the WoB that Master_Moridin posted above. jW

More specifically: Click on this button at the top of the forums: Then, click the little pencil icon next to the name of the feed if you want to change the name (the default is "Activity", rather than "Unread Content"): Most importantly, set the filters at the top the way you want them (on mobile, you have to click Set Filters to get these options to show up). These are the ones I chose: Once you've set those the way you want them, click the Save Changes button that will appear just below those options. Lastly, go back up to the title of the Activity stream you're using, and click that checkmark icon, which will set it as your default feed. Then, when you click that button in the future to open your Activity feed, it'll default to those options you set. jW

You have to be careful with both, or they start to wobble. Investiture is like bacon. :-P

I know, but there are two things to keep in mind. First is that the meanings of the words Devotion and Dominion can shift quite a bit, and it could be argued that the Seons allow their masters Dominion over them, while the Skaze are devoted to their beliefs (I know, a bit loose), but also that the effects and purposes of magic systems often don't tie to the Intents of the Shards, just the Initiation for the magic users. As splinters, however, I would expect the Seons and Skaze to correspond at least somewhat to the Intents of the Shards they're splinters of. jW

Even more, I suspected that Cuicesh was actually bonded to a Bondsmith that attempted something to stave off or limit the effects of the Recreance, but in the process was broken and Cuicesh's faces are those of the Radiants whose Bond's the Bondsmith tried to hold in place, but instead those faces were somehow imprinted on the great Spren. jW

In that case, I think the Bond that happens is between the gemstones/Stormlight, and the fabrial itself. The person using it then gets some overflow, leading to their changes that take place with extended usage, under the same basic principles as savantism with allomancy. jW

Thanks, tried to look to see if it had been asked and couldn't find it, but I'm not surprised (either that it's been asked or that it's been RAFO'd). I suspect we'll actually see this in a book before too long. :-) jW
