He'd already martyred himself to keep Ruin imprisoned at that point. He'd used up a large portion of his mind to create the prison. Leras was already mostly gone by that time, and he didn't get anything back when the prison was destroyed (if anything, things probably got worse for him at that point, beyond the damage that had been done by creating the prison and then the time after that). The last of his strength and mental capacity was used up communicating with Elend outside of Fadrex, and that's the time he truly, completely, and irrevocably died. jW

Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Jondesu replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
After getting storming screwed over yet again (the same leave servicing company that can go service themselves, told one of my doctors that I will no longer have insurance, which isn't rusting true, but I will now potentially have to shell out $450 at my first visit if that's not straightened out), I've decided the only way I can make it through this without finding an Honor Chasm is to not give a Ryshadium's rear end about anything anymore. jW -
SPOILERS! ---Does Kaladin like Shallan, and Vice Versa?---
Jondesu replied to ChullRider's topic in Stormlight Archive
Don't forget, though: Shallan is thrice a murderer (even not counting the situation with Tyn). She shouldn't really judge him too harshly, though I don't know if she'll actually be so kind since she has such a history of lying to herself and others. I liked your point about Kaladin not allowing himself to love, btw. Goes well with his martyr complex. jW -

I think we should revive this, because I want to show off. :-P My new avatar is my initialgram, similar to the way Tolkien signed many things, and it's a combination of my three initials (JAW) overlaid on top of each other. I've used it plenty of places before, but I'm happiest with this version. jW

A few hours ahead of schedule, I give you my review of Lost Stars, by Claudia Gray.

Understandable. One final question on the editor, at least from me: is there an option (without demanding much effort from you, or possibly already enabled), to use a simple text input instead of the rich text editor. I can use another app to write long posts, but that's not practical all the time, and it'd be nice to have an option to avoid some of the quirks. jW

We don't know if there must be a conscious, active desire, and since the existence of the Cognitive Realm indicates that there's some different things going on in terms of minds than a strict physical existence, I'd say not needing to be awake for some forms of magic isn't much of a surprise. The examples given of Vin, Elend, and Zahel/Vasher all seeming using magic while asleep or unconscious should be taken as proof of that, and now all we need to do is figure out a likely explanation for how. jW

I already posted a bit of one I started over in the Creator's Corner board here: Stormlight song Obviously, I'm a fan of the idea! :-) jW

preservation 16 or 2? Sign from Preservation
Jondesu replied to Sam Script's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I suspect Preservation didn't have a lot of control over the Well taking 1024 years to refill. Some, possibly, but not enough to make it work out as a multiple of 16. Perhaps Scadrial's natural inclination is to exponential numbers, since we know 16 wasn't really a native thing necessarily. jW -
@Oversleep, we only know that intent is required for Hemalurgy, not other magics. Wayne says you have to heal a head wound as it's happening, because you can't tap after you're dead. However, we know both TLR and Miles were supposed to have survived beheading and that Hoid, at least, would grow a new head if beheaded per a WoB, so there's obviously something going on that doesn't require active brainwaves. jW
-
There's two parts of that I think are important. Even while you sleep, you have thoughts and desires, which can be more than simply random unconscious thought (that's part of why our dreams so often play out desires or fears), so a desire to preserve or heal yourself may play into that. Elend certainly didn't want to die when he was hurt by Leras' Cognitive Shadow, so while he didn't even know he'd burned the Lerasium and then the pewter in Vin's vial, I assume his desires, possibly with some Shard-assisted Intent, caused him to burn it even while unconscious. The other factor seems to be habit and instinctive body functions. When an Allomancer has burned metals enough, their body seems to take over the process and do it automatically while they're sleeping in some cases. That can't be common since Kelsier told Vin to burn off her metals before sleeping, but it seems to be possible. jW

Nice quote, I'd forgotten that detail. Yeah, sounds like he was truly invincible apart from his one weakness. jW
-
He still has a Prime Invincibility, and would still be nearly impossible to kill without figuring out his weakness. I don't recall any reason that would disqualify him as a High Epic. jW
-
He's superstrong, can fly, and shoots energy beams from his hands. Good luck drowning him. But yes, if you could pull it off somehow, I assume he can drown. jW

What are you playing right now?
Jondesu replied to Link Von Kelsier Harvey's topic in Entertainment Discussion
Just started working on LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. Just as fun as the other LEGO games I've tried (and I've done a lot), but this is my first one playing solo, and on the computer. Got it from the Steam sale for $4.99. Just have to find and hook up my controller to make it a bit easier to play, though. jW -
Having a Bad Day?: Get 'yer Hugs here!!
Jondesu replied to Curious Anamaximder's topic in General Discussion
I just found out that not only was my short term disability claim not extended (despite the fact that we're merely continuing the same treatment that I was put on when this began), but it's due to information not being provided that we could have easily provided had they storming called us back even one time during the month it was being worked on. Incompetence drives me mad enough, but when it has the potential to cost me my income, that's unforgivable. The appeals process is crazy too, but we're probably going to have to jump through all their hoops and hopefully get paid again in a month or two when that completes (at least they'll cover back pay if we do successfully appeal it). jW -
Those are both awesome, @thegatorgirl00! Personally, I'd want to see the hallway scene when Kaladin says the third Ideal and Syl forms into the Shardblade. I'd have a dark hallway, a last sphere or two in the distance not yet gone out, while Kaladin is glowing dimly and Syl is wisping into the shape of the blade. Elhokar behind him, cowering, and Moash and {I forget his name} leaning back in fear (or maybe just not show any of them, only Kaladin and Syl). That might be more spoilery than would be best for a movie poster, though. Another option would be to simply have a Shardbearer (Dalinar or Adolin, probably), looking through the eyeslits of their helm, holding the Shardblade up in front of them. Slightly cliche, but would be amazing if they got the blade and plate right. Glyphs on the blade would be perfect too, but I don't recall if either of theirs has anything like that (I don't think they do). A Parshendi warpair in warform leaping over a chasm would also be incredible, perhaps with Alethi spearmen awaiting them. They'd have to be shoulder-to-shoulder, covering for each other, with their weapons up and ready as they're jumping. I'd probably have the Tower visible in the distance, or perhaps a pupating Chasmfiend. jW

crazy theory Different Dalinar's Wife Theory [Stormlight 3 Spoilers]
Jondesu replied to Lightspine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
That's the big thing to me. Sarene is not only happily married to Raoden last we saw, but she's not the Elantrian, he is. Unless she's also turned, she'd need some other source of magic to have even lived that long. jW -
Indeed. Never even watched him, but from what I hear, he was pretty much unbearable to watch or work with. The other Chris Evans, however. :-) jW

Are Shardblades and Shardplate made of Honor's godmetal
Jondesu replied to Omniforce's topic in Stormlight Archive
Actually, we know that metals from other worlds work just fine for Allomancy. The fact that they're created by Preservation and Ruin doesn't matter, only the actual structure of the metal that acts as the key. Shardplate, not being one of the Allomantic metals, might still not be burnable if it isn't made of Investiture (instead of just from Investiture), but it's not because the Shard involved didn't invest in Scadrial, at least not directly. jW -
There's even two of them (one's not worth watching, though). jW

crazy theory Different Dalinar's Wife Theory [Stormlight 3 Spoilers]
Jondesu replied to Lightspine's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Something that just came to mind about the left-handedness: Shshshsh wouldn't actually have needed to be left-handed for the results we hear about from Navani, simply very new to the idea of safehands and forgetful (or intentionally playing on people's assumptions). That said, Sarene wouldn't have married Dalinar. I'm curious, it seems an obvious conclusion, but do we actually know for sure that the woman in the reading was Shshshsh? jW
