Actually, those examples don't really hold weight. None of those people were bonded to spren, they all just had spren interested in them. The Stormfather basically commanded Dalinar to relinquish his bond to the Shardblade he had before he would bond him and was immediately upset when Dalinar picked up Oathbringer. I think most if not all other spren would act similarly. I think it's the main reason why Eshonai and Ehlokar didn't progress further in their bonds before their untimely demises. With time, the spren would have probably communicated with them and told them to relinquish their blade. I mean, if you were trying to date someone and they had someone's corpse in their home, you would either run or at least try to convince them to get rid of the dead body. The Skybreakers can't do anything about spren being interested in people and that isn't what they were trying to prevent, they just wanted to make sure it didn't go any further than that. For some reason the Skybreakers thought the Nahel Bonds would bring back the Fused, I think Ishar told Nale that. The Skybreakers would find people that the spren were interested in and bring them into their own organization. Some would go down the path of becoming a Radiant through a Highspren and the ones that were incompatible with that order would become agents of the organization for other purposes. I have a feeling there were certain candidates they tried to recruit over others depending on which type of spren was interested.

I'm not sure I'm understanding you correctly. You seem to indicate that Voidbringer is the less attractive option and I chose Radiant, not sure where you disagree.

Why slatrification works and why my way should be truth
Harrycrapper replied to Ark1002's topic in White Sand
I understand why Slatrification is problematic, it basically makes for unlimited Sand Mastery on Dayside. I could see it being a component of Sand Mastery that doesn't become prominent until Sand Masters are in a different setting than Dayside for narrative reasons. Slatrification doesn't create the same narrative issues if invested sand isn't a readily available resource. Spoilers for era 2 Mistborn: -
I think the reason the Skybreakers gave Helaran a Shardblade and Shardplate was equal parts test/experiment and precaution. They knew that someone in the Davar household was a proto Radiant or just plain Radiant. If you're not sure, the best way to test if someone is a Radiant is to have them try to bond a dead Shardblade. If they can't do it and mention hearing screaming, they're Radiant. Furthermore, if they haven't bonded a spren but seem like they might attract one, bonding the dead Shardblade and Shardplate would definitely repel any potential spren. Yes, I know Renarin managed to bond the dead Shardblade and Plate, but anyone who knows what to look for could probably tell that he was having a hard time due to a pre existing bond.

I'll take it upon myself then to do the Elantris one. Hrathen siding with Sarene and the Elantrians over Dilaf was very unexpected given how devoted to Shu-Dereth he was.

I have an analogy to explain my position. This seems a lot like a choice to have high speed, high cost internet with data caps(Radiants) or a low speed, low cost connection with no data cap(Voidbringer). As someone in the former position(high speed) who has friends in the latter(low speed), I much prefer keeping track of my data and having the high speed when I need it rather than having an infinite slow speed. Therefore I choose Radiant.

Do we know which surge the Fused do not have access to? Been about wondering that.

theory Specuating on Oathgate Locations (and other stuff)
Harrycrapper replied to TheWadehart's topic in Stormlight Archive
The Eila Stele references the Singers' gods "of spren, stone, and wind." This is widely believed to reference the Nightwatcher, the Sibling, and the Stormfather respectively. I'm not sure if either Honor or Cultivation took any ownership over the Sibling as they did with the Stormfather and the Nightwatcher. Random speculation here; it could be that the Sibling was more connected to Cultivation and needs her investiture to run the city, not Stormlight. Or possibly a combination of both Stormlight and Cultivation's equivalent. -
That's odd, it's working for me. Maybe try changing browsers, clearing cookies, or changing the device you're using. If that doesn't work, we might want to ask the mods if I can copy/paste the entire thing in here as a quote so you can at least read it.

I went ahead and looked at the site, there was a deleted scene and an annotation for why he cut it. https://www.brandonsanderson.com/perfect-state-annotation-one-why-i-cut-the-deleted-scene/ I'm not sure if there is something else you're thinking of but that's probably what I was recalling. Edit: Read your original comment again, yea it looks like the link works now and there's a second annotation on the consequences of cutting the scene.

poll Raoden, Sarene or Hrathen?
Harrycrapper replied to Honorless's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
The funny thing is that Raoden was fighting depression, just not his own depression. If I were voting for favorite character's chapters to read it would be Raoden, but if it's just favorite character, I'd vote for Hrathen. -
Could be just like Mars, planet in the habitable zone but didn't have life whenever Khriss visited. Maybe life was there but died out, might be it never had it, or might be that it could start developing in the future. The Drominad system seems like it will develop interplanetary trade when the various civilizations there start getting space faring tech, they might colonize it later in the Cosmere timeline. I could see Brandon making a short story or something where the characters go to colonize a new planet using one or more of the various magic systems.

As much as I'm ashamed to admit this, I'm more inclined to read Dalinar's flashbacks than Kaladin and Shallans' because Dalinar's have action sequences. Instead of being directed away from the main story to a depressing introspective story about Kaladin/Shallan's past, you're (usually) put into an action sequence from the POV of a brutal, talented warrior. You're definitely right on how Dalinar's war crimes are tame compared to historical examples, but his real crime was killing his own wife. When juxtaposed with the honorable Dalinar we've experienced outside the flashbacks, this revelation hits pretty hard and I definitely didn't see it coming. I also think his flashbacks work along the main story a lot better in rereads than the others because he's actually remembering these things as we go along. Sidenote; That bit about the Mongols sounds eerily similar to what Sadees the Sunmaker did in Azir.

Yea Karger is correct here, compounding doesn't really affect your allomantic abilities. When you compound, you're using the power of allomancy to fuel your feruchemy. This does not work the other way around, and even if it did, it wouldn't work well. While the effects of feruchemy seem pretty potent, the amount of actual power it uses is pretty minimal compared to allomancy. So, again, even if it were possible(and I'm pretty sure it isn't) using feruchemical reserves to power allomancy would be terribly inefficient. I also assumed while reading the Mistborn books the first time that TLR's compounding is why his allomancy was so much stronger than even Elend after he had a Lerasium bead. But, Brandon later revealed that TLR made himself a super powerful Mistborn, though I forget if that was a side affect of using the power in The Well of Ascension or a deliberate action. Though, there are useful combinations of feruchemy and allomancy that can make allomantic abilities more effective. An obvious in book example is Wax's ability to store weight makes him very versatile at using steel pushes and this combination would work well for A-Iron as well. The ability to compound steel would also make steel pushes stronger as the increased speed will add additional force to a steel push. Storing nutrition and hydration in Bendalloy and/or storing breath in Cadmium would be very useful for an extended pewter drag, making it so you could run for long periods of time without needing to eat, drink or breath.

Thoughts and feelings about the Mistborn series (very long)
Harrycrapper replied to NyxRo's topic in Mistborn
I still think Kelsier robbing the Ire in secret history is one of, if not the funniest sequences Brandon has written in the Cosmere. Punching both Preservation and Ruin in the face also got a good laugh out of me. -
Question About Compounding! (minor spoilers for Mistborn 2nd era)
Harrycrapper replied to ILIYA's topic in Mistborn
I doubt you could use it to directly store more health, but you might be able to use it to better deal with the side effects of storing health.- 45 replies

What I'm wondering is if there is anyone still alive from back then.

Have we ever gotten any sort of confirmation on who the Elantrians at The Ire were and when they left Sel? If I'm not mistaken, the book Elantris takes place pretty early in Cosmere history relative to Mistborn and it seemed like the city of Elantris itself had been established some time before the book. Are the members of the Ire pre or post Reod? Pre shattering of Devotion and Dominion? They're the only ones we've seen so far that could fit your question, otherwise the others we have seen on Roshar are definitely post Reod.

All the characters have such mysterious backstories before they get their flashbacks, but once you've gotten the back story it just becomes background and feels very disconnected from the main story. I do find Dalinar's easier to stomach on rereads because it isn't adolescent or very depressing(at least until the last few). I will say, Kaladin's final flashback is much better than Shallan's and Dalinar's is better than both, I mean that Cultivation reveal was nuts.

Don't tell anyone. I can't say it. I must whisper. I usually skip the Kaladin and Shallan flashbacks in rereads. Drawer 30-20, a particularly small emerald

Hoid, hair reference, and the last page of White Sand
Harrycrapper replied to ftl's topic in White Sand
I figured that was just meta commentary on how Brandon created White Sand but he wasn't the one to truly create the final publication that is the graphic novels. -
I used to have very good audiographic memory when I was in school, though like you said with Eidteic it has faded over time. I would be able to play back teachers lessons in my head during tests, rarely took notes, just made sure to pay attention in class, people hated me for that. It's very interesting for audiobooks, if I binge a bunch of books narrated by the same person I can actually hear my own thoughts in the narrators voice for a bit due to the large sample size. Only really been able to do that with Michael Kramer and James Marsters, most other series I've read weren't large enough or didn't keep the same narrator over time. As for the topic at hand, Sazed put the contents of his metalminds in The Words of Founding. So if it is possible to access old metal minds, you'd need to go back pretty far in Era 1 or pre Era 1 to find anything new. The Keepers had been quite thorough to make sure they all had each-others knowledge stored.

Also, what might add to the confusion is where Jasnah specifically asks for a garnet when Soulcasting Shallan's blood to cure her of the poison. I chalk that up to Jasnah still trying to keep up the act of having a Soulcaster instead of being one. Which really speaks to Jasnah's character, not many people in such a frenetic moment would be able to wait for the right type of gemstone when they knew they didn't need it. Jasnah really knows how to commit to a bit.

I kinda remember reading an annotation for Perfect State, maybe it got lost in the website reface shuffle.
