Well here is a question, Syl is the stormfather's "daughter". She has stated she is of honor. So are you saying Syl is actually of Adonalsium, and Honor corrupted her and all other honorspren too?

Szeth and Screaming-Spren-Swords (spoiler-y ness)
Pathfinder replied to KnightRadiant's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well here is the thing as to why I feel that WoB throws out the theory that it is the honorblade or shardblade, and that shardplate shields it. I have bolded below: BRANDON SANDERSON Uhhh, Szeth's screams. Uhhm, I'm trying to decide how to answer this. It is not, see here's the thing. What we would call magical may not be considered magical in the Cosmere, but it depends on your definition of magic. Would Szeth if he were on our planet and have done those things would he hear those screams, probably not, but would someone else in the Cosmere who had gone through what he had gone through hear those screams, yes. He did not say if someone else in the Cosmere wielded an honorblade, they would experience that. He said if someone else, anywhere else went through what Szeth went through, they would hear screams. That to me means if Wax went around whole sale slaughtering people, he would experience that. If Silence Montane went around whole sale slaughtering people, she would experience that. And so on. No honorblade or shardblade required. In fact there is another thread where people are wondering if there is a shard influencing characters on various worlds as there seems to be a trend of dissection (Nan Balat, Bloody Tan, etc). Who is to say those characters are not suffering from similar effects of their actions? Again without any honorblade or shardblade needed.- 46 replies

And comic books hold even less consistency. Magneto goes from only manipulating metal, to all magnetic fields to which all things in existence have so he can manipulate everything (oh oh and I forgot, he can make black holes and turn invisible that way too!), to oh yeah by the way, suddenly he had telepathy. What is consistent in both comic books and movies, is that Captain America can and has damaged and or destroyed Iron Man's armor. He has accomplished this even against armors specifically made to fight/kill Captain America (and that armor had nothing to do with the Civil War story line, it came long before it). edit: just to clarify as this always comes up when posts go back and forth quickly, when I bold words, it is in an effort to show emphasis. This is to avoid using caps so as to not sound like I am shouting. Ironically enough, the use of bold has been in the past still been viewed or assumed to be as yelling or being upset. Again I am not. I am only using bold to call attention or highlight specific points in my post. edit 2: also if this thread has taught me anything during my research is this: Tony gets manipulated, taken over, or his armor stolen or taken over a lot. These armors also get beaten up, stopped, or destroyed by other heroes a lot lol.
-
Ok, then how about Captain America being able doing exactly that? Strong enough to rip apart Tony's suit. Also if the amount of force as result of a push of shooting coins is comparable to the power of the shield damaging the armor, then a duralumin push and pull should clearly tear the armor in two. Aiming systems and heating seeking which both would be distorted due to a Bendalloy bubble, homing missiles which would be stopped by steel, and we haven't even mentioned atium. edit: also tearing the suit apart should take less effort than trying to penetrate the armor. Tearing it apart is going against the joints and seams of the armor, which has only so much structural integrity to allow for manipulation and motion. edit 2: it also has not been stated at what point the two fighters begin, do they have knowledge of each other's location, do they have knowledge of each others capabilities, and if so do they have time to prepare based on this knowledge? Because if so, Vin gets benefits of this as well.
-
A man at peak human fitness (that is all the serum did for captain america) throwing a discus (cap's shield) can damage it, why wouldn't pushes and pulls from a pewter burning mistborn? edit: vibranium absorbs energy, so what his shield is made of did not give him any additional penetrating power

Szeth and Screaming-Spren-Swords (spoiler-y ness)
Pathfinder replied to KnightRadiant's topic in Stormlight Archive
The quote still says to me that honorblades do not hold the limitations of a sprenblade, and that would include the shouting. I have copied the quote below and bolded what I feel is the relevant part: With this sword, someone can do what you can, but without the....checks a spren requires."- 46 replies

Pathfinder replied to KnightRadiant's topic in Stormlight Archive
Thing is Syl stated that honorblades work differently, and do not have the same rules as sprenblades. You do not have to hold to oaths or ideals to wield them. So I believe this extends to screaming as well.- 46 replies

That is why I stated she could push on arms and legs individually. So for instance, steady pull on his chest to go towards him. While flying towards him, he raises his arm to shoot her. While still pulling on his chest, she pushes on his arm, causing the shot to go wide. Same with his other weapons edit: that is also not accounting for the fact that she can switch what she is pulling on, or push. He would have forces throwing him every which way preventing him from aiming or locking on with any of his weapons. For instance yanking on him to accelerate towards him, then pushing on his right shoulder while pulling on his left should would spin him around. Then yank on his leg to further close the distance, making him flip backwards. Storms, keep it up enough and Tony may very well lose his lunch in his visor lol.
-
Well therein lies the continual problem with versus bouts. The conditions need to be named. Does Tony know Vin's abilities and same vica versa prior to combat? If they do have knowledge, do they have time to prepare (to make aluminum weapons for instance)? Where do they start, how far apart do they start, and do they have knowledge of where each other are when they start?
-
I checked, the anti magneto suit is made of carbon tubes. So I believe that is not metal, though those in the scientific field may be able to better elaborate. Again, Vin does not need to push off coins to fly up to Iron Man. All she needs to do is pull on a part of him and she goes flying right at him like a homing missile. Now to clarify, anytime I think of fights like these, I picture an arena where the two characters face off. If we are talking in general, then there are going to be a lot of other factors coming into play. edit: ninjaed by Landis lol
-
That is the one problem with this discussion, Iron Man has a lot of armors. He also had an armor that was immune to Magneto, and a nano armor that was within his body. So given there are countless iterations, I figured I would use the standard armor in the battle. But that choice would ultimately be up to the OP. The icing problem I do not think would be a huge issue for Vin for two reasons. One, she could easily rip him apart long before he got that high. Second, Ham walks around in just a vest numerous times while it is snowing out and doesn't show any signs of frostbite. So although I do not believe Vin would be immune, I do believe she would last more than long enough to dispatch Tony.

Sanderson "Would you Rather"
Pathfinder replied to KnightRadiant's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Returned stranded on Roshar. Just gotta hop out in the storm for a little bit to recharge, and given I am a Returned and immortal, being dirt poor in spheres will change over a long enough time line Which would you rather, be a mistborn, but it having to be through hemalurgy so you have to spike the people yourself to get the powers, or be a Returned but having to convince people to voluntarily give you their breaths so you are always a breath away from dying (you cannot use any other means to sustain yourself.)- 954 replies

But Iron Man's flying wouldn't matter as Vin could at any point pull herself towards him, or push herself away. She could also throw off his shots by pushing only on his arms, throw off his flight by pushing only on his legs. Also she could potentially rip off his armor if she aimed a push at his chest, and a pull at both arms, and burned duralumin while doing it. Actually she could aim the push at his chest, and a pull on his helmet, arms, and legs while burning duralumin. Suddenly Tony Stark is in midair with only his chest plate. Assuming of course the pull on his helmet, arms, and legs don't result in ripping his head and various appendages off while she is at it.

Although a stretch, he is a collector of antiquities (various bones). Maybe he likes certain clothes to match with certain bones. "Well I am wearing the hand bones of Breeze, and he wouldn't be caught dead in anything other than this deep shade of brown.....But hmmm, now I am going to a less formal occasion and my bones may be damaged. Let me switch out to that street urchin from just after the Cacendre. That was a very excellent year, and he was rather durable. I think his hand and leg bones would be best. But this coat is far too good for such likes, so I shall go a lighter shade. Perhaps a tan." Again, total stretch, but would be pretty funny if that was the case

Men typically have body hair as well. It would not be a long term solution, but the kandra could certainly migrate chest and leg hair to the face and let it out in bits over time to emulate stubble. Given the time period, walking around naked or with little clothing is very rare. True servants tend to draw their lords and ladies baths, but at least in men's case I believe it is rare to have a male servant wash you as well. Especially as an adult.

I believe, though this is a hazy recollection so take it with a grain of salt, is the why he was discharged of his command when the reason his team was killed seemed beyond his control. Also WoB say that Brandon wants to keep Abraham's history a mystery, so there is something more.

Problem with this is it seems to be accepted within the world, that the shades predate the Evil. Quote below: Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell kindle location 210 "The first people to come scout this continent, the first to homestead the Forests.... the first to stake a claim on hell itself" "Don't call the Forests that. This is my home" "But it is how men saw this land, before the Evil. Doesn't that make you curious? Hell, land of the damned, where the shadows of the dead made their home." So they saw that the land was home of shades even before the Evil showed up.

So I reread the short story and came away with some insights that might answer a lot of these questions. But first regarding why shades do not fly or walk on water. This is a personal theory but I think because they are cognitive shadows of people they naturally hold to some of the rules they had while alive. People don't fly or walk on water. Now maybe over a long enough time, they lose their humanoid form, they might act differently. But it looks like it acts like "people". It would however be interesting to see a bird shade and see how it flies lol. Now regarding passing through buildings and trees. I believe this was a misunderstanding based on descriptions in the book. I will state my understanding and then quote the relevant scenes. So when shades are not active (I mean this to mean not green nor red eyed. When they are white), they naturally pull away from people as if pushed by a breeze. So wind does not actually push them, it is merely to illustrate how their motions appear. So if not active shades avoid running into people, it would stand to reason the same would stand for trees. Now I believe shades either cannot, or do not typically pass through walls and such. The reason for the silver barrier is it ensures that the shades cannot break through. The barrier can be weakened when attacked, but it throws the shades back and is a solid line of "force". With a normal wooden wall, there are going to be gaps and it could be broken down. The breaking down the wall is a personal theory, but what I believe is concrete is the other reason why I think there is a difference between a silver barrier and a wooden wall. A silver barrier you can walk over, but the shades cannot. There is no opening or closing of a door. It is a solid wall to shades, while an ease of travel for humans. A wall on the other hand can keep shades out, but in order for a human to walk in and out, the door has to be opened. In the book it mentions that shades are always around. Just during the day you can barely see them if at all. Shades get behind the walls not because they phase through the walls, but because they wander in with general traffic. So now you have an unknown amount of shades within your walls when night comes, and some idiot decided to strike a light, or get into a fight. That is why Silence's place is so valuable. Because she constantly has concentric circles of silver, there is never a chance of a shade (except her grandmother), ever ending up within the barrier. Regarding Theopolis's silver lined cave. It is later commented on that Silence sees the silver barrier in front of the cave. So that is what she was referring to. This would then line up with my theory that they do not pass through solid matter (at least voluntarily) and that silver is just a means for a completely sealed location. Also I would like to state that although this question did not come up in this post, I do not believe the Evil and the shades are related. Theopolis states how this was Hell when the first forescouts came to scout it. And how that was before the Evil came to the homeland. Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell kindle location 210 "The first people to come scout this continent, the first to homestead the Forests.... the first to stake a claim on hell itself" "Don't call the Forests that. This is my home" "But it is how men saw this land, before the Evil. Doesn't that make you curious? Hell, land of the damned, where the shaodws of the dead made their home." So they saw that the land was home of shades even before the Evil showed up. Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell kindle location 420 Shades slid through the trees nearby, almost invisible with nothing to illuminate them. She kept her distance, but even so, she occasionally turned to see one of the things drifting past her. Stumbling into a shade could kill you, but that kind of accident was uncommon. Unless enraged, shades moved away from people who got too close, as if blown by a soft breeze. So long as you were moving slowly - and you should be - you would be all right. So it could be said that scene literally says they slid through the trees. But personally, I take that again as being literarily descriptive. As in to illustrate the spooky, silent, and invisible way they move. Not to literally state they walked through the actual tree. You can write the same exact sentence but with a wolf in place of the shade. "Wolves slid through the trees nearby, almost invisible with nothing to illuminate them." Same exact sentence with one word changed, but because we know how wolves function, we take it to mean they pass through the forest stealthily, instead of actually walking through a tree. Then again we have a descriptor that makes it sound like they could be moved by wind, when it in my opinion is meant to only illustrate how they seem to drift away from people as long as they are not active. Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell kindle location 831 Silence found Theopolis's hidden cave after six hours of hunting. It was about where she'd expected it to be, in the hills not far from the Old Bridge. It included a silver barrier. She could harvest that. Good money there. So it states there is a silver barrier, and it could be harvested. That would be rather difficult if it was as it sounded earlier as "silver lined" if that meant silver was embedded in the entire cave. Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell kindle location 843 "I like it. It feels peaceful. The homesteads don't have good silver protection. They just.... let the shades move about. Even inside." The man shuddered. So again, I feel this quote conveys that the main thing the silver border act as is as sort of a airlock regarding shades. It prevents any form of slipping it, "airtight". Never have to worry about leaving a door open too long, or if you open a window a shade slipping in. Never have to worry about making a little mistake during the three rules, and suddenly a shade you didn't know was in the house already, jumps you. Yes the silver can fail after repeated attacks, but it is the sense of security in knowing once you pass that barrier, no shades are here.

Adonalsium was, essentially, useless?
Pathfinder replied to CaptainRyan's topic in Cosmere Discussion
For all we know Adonalsium could have viewed the people of Yolen like the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still. That the people on the planet could end up destroying the universe and Adonalsium was acting to destroy them or prevent them from advancing. So in defense the group worked together to shatter Adonalsium. Or it could be that some of the group had a nefarious goal, and tricked the rest into thinking it was a good idea through mis-information. We already have (though admittedly biased) testimony that Rayse was a liar and manipulator. There are a whole host of reasons for Adonalsium shattering. I think what Blight is saying is that there is so little information, that based on what little we have, your theory doesn't feel like it fits. He doesn't have enough evidence to disprove you, but you do not have enough evidence to prove it true either. Yes it is a theory, but there are some theories with more info to back it up than others. This honestly in my own opinion, is pretty loose and a stretch. Yes we know Adonalsium was shattered. Yes we know the current shards have intents. And yes we know an instance of one shard where its intents make it difficult (though not impossible) to act. Yet none of that means that is how Adonalsium had to have functioned prior to the shattering. If anything I feel the fact that Adonalsium could have split in multiple different ways shows he didn't have specific intents prior to the shattering. That intents were probably a result of the shattering. Not something that predated it. But like you said, that is my own opinion about your theory. We just do not have any information to lend further credence to either of us. -
It will hurt. This has been asked and WoB says it is possible but painful. Assuming of course you mean the person is burning a spike embedded in them.

New Information On AonDor Intitiation.
Pathfinder replied to Blightsong's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Elantris page 161 "But" she said, thinking out loud "your people's homeland is Derethi now" Shuden's face darkened, eyeing the gyorn. "I wonder what the great master thought when his two students, Korath and Dereth, left to preach to the lands northward. Keseg taught of unity. But what did he mean? Unity of mind, as my people assume? Unity of love, as your priests claim? Or is it the unity of obedience, as the Derethi believe? In the end, I am left to ponder how mankind managed to complicate such a simple concept." He paused, then shook his head. "Anyway, yes, my lady, JinDo is Derethi now. My people allow Wyrn to assume that the JinDo have been converted because it is better than fighting. Many are now questioning that decision, however. The Arteths are growing increasingly demanding. Also I cannot find a quote that specifically states when exactly JinDo became Derethi, but from the context it is within Sarene's life time, so not even a generation has passed. Derethi is a religion. England was still England whether it was Protestant or Catholic. The main changes from Derethi to a nation conquered are worshiping in Fjorden (much like the catholic church made people worship in Latin), and obeying Wyrn if he makes any "requests". This mainly manifests in a standing army he can summon from any nation to help him take over other countries as need be. Otherwise the culture remains intact. What I believe Nyali and myself are referring to (correct me if I am wrong) are instances such as South America during colonization. The colonists intermarried with the native population till over enough generations a whole new ethnicity, culture and language arose that was an amalgamum of both. So had the natives had their own magic system, it might have changed over time to something unique of the natives and the foreign power entering. That perhaps over enough generations and with advancements in travel and information, culture will merge more and more till there is unity. In some ways that is already happening today. Cultural ideas that would have never been heard or considered in other countries, thanks to the internet are flowing back and forth and being picked up like never before. I believe at the time of Elantris, unless the Elantrians become a world power with their magic allowing teleportation and communication at little to no cost in comparison to the other magics, this theory of unity is impossible. Perhaps in a few centuries and maybe even as of the time of Mistborn but the current time of Elantris would make this very difficult. -
