  1. Ah my bad. Crystalline stuck in my head, and when I hear that, I picture quartz crystal. good catch. Regarding dissolving the lichen, I am not so sure that it doesn't. Water does not dissolve sandling carapace into nothing, it makes it liquid till it dries out again. That is where nearly all food and a lot of goods comes from. Dissolve carapace into a puddle, leave out to dry, spice and now you have zaipon. Take a carapace and a wet cloth, running it along to make an edge, now you have a sword. Dropplets of water act as a "drill" creating a hole to make desks and such. So as far as we know, sand that is wet is dissolved film.
  2. That is incorrect. Parshendi have cracked shardplate with hammers and axes. Shardbearers would not need a cohort accompanying them into combat if a normal person could not break it.
  3. Way of Kings page 32 Szeth underestimated his opponent. The king stepped into Szeth's attack, trusting his helm to absorb the blow. Just as Szeth hit the helm a second time - shattering it - Gavilar punched with his off hand, slamming his gauntleted fist into Szeth's face So it was a sucker punch that Szeth didn't expect. Gavilar willingly let Szeth hit him, trusting that he could handle the damage to his suit, in exchange for possibly ending the fight for good. The sucker punch did not rely on speed, but surprise. That was due inadvertently to a thread I wrote a long time ago where I was trying to figure out how much stormlight is used to accomplish various goals. Basically it took almost all of Szeth's stormlight to barely heal his jaw while much later in the book and next book, he is healing grievous wounds in seconds with far less cost. Please refer to my above response Kandra do not even need to be leaders or generals. All they need to do is look like they belong to join mission reports and planning. Officers get killed on the battlefield just as much as general infantry. All you would need is for Scadrial to win a skirmish or two, and go through the bodies. Then before Roshar knows they can accomplish this and how, you have already seeded the Rosharian army with spies.
  4. My wife is puerto rican and speaks fluent spanish, so I know what that phrase means, and its connotation. In fact she has a colorful response for what you said herself. But I will chose to ignore your comment to close the issue.
  5. Ah my misunderstanding. Sorry!
  6. Pretty much everything that CaptainRyan said. You made excellent points Arraenae, but that would stand more if it was left ambiguous and not confronted. In the example given, he is confronted, is apologetic, and ends up more open minded as result (his interest in MeLann regardless what form she takes be it female, male, or horse he sees she is the same person).
  7. Although I am still leaning towards my own interpretation, that is an excellent point. So like I said, the fact that there can be three different understandings of it, shows it needs to be referenced. Putting links to the full WoB would solve that and I whole heartily support.
  8. I quoted the Shallan scene because you stated she did it for shock value. When the quote is referenced, it is clear she did not. I sought to explain why from a narrative perspective the "poop" scene was used. You disagree and I respect that. In that it seems we must disagree. Shallan used the jokes and comments to distract Kaladin from being so morose and dwelling on the imminent death of the highstorm. Once the highstorm passed, and they were (for the most part) safe, it was no longer necessary. I quoted the scene to illustrate why I feel it was not appropriate for them to continue their light hearted banter given the darkening of moods on both their parts. Again you disagree, and I respect that. It is continually commented on how Adolin goes from girl to girl to girl. That every date is chaperoned and that he courts them as per his society. Dalinar and Navani do not scold him fearing he will produce a bastard out of wedlock. Despite his reputation, fathers continue to approve dates for their daughters with Adolin. His real personality demonstrates that this makes sense for him. But again, you disagree and I respect that. That is my own interpretation of the events. That is incorrect. You should ask, but also be open to differing opinions that could expand and bring a greater understanding of the novels by hearing other people's views. Now personally I find that comment you made patronizing.
  9. The only times we see a shardbearer have faster than normal reflexes is Dalinar. He is an exception as he was a proto radiant, and was stated he could seemingly get more out of the armor than anyone else. He has pulled the same feats without armor as with armor (catching the chasmfiend claw in armor, and catching Szeth's honorblade out of armor) Yes you do run faster than humans without armor as we see from Adolin, Elhokar, and Dalinar out running their cohorts on numerous occasions but that is a strength enhancement from the legs. That does not imply reacting faster. Also the strength increase is in order to move a far heavier load. A shardbearer needs to build up to speed. Shardplate also does not bequeath endurance. You get tired swinging a giant sword regardless how strong you are. So pewter burners are lighter, react faster, last longer, and have better balance to employ said speed.
  10. Bolded for emphasis. I am responding to each point again as you stated you were being misunderstood, so I wanted to ensure I was giving each point its due attention. Words of Radiance Regarding Adolin and Shallan's flirting about poop: Words of Radiance page 570 He paused again. She was probably supposed to ask what happened next. "What if you need to poop?" she asked instead. "Well, I put my back to the chasm and laid about me with my sword, intending to....Wait. What did you say?" "Poop" Shallan said "You're out there on the battlefield, encased in metal like a crab in its shell. What do you do if nature calls?" "I....er...." Adolin frowned at her. "That is not something any woman has ever asked me before" "Yay for originality!" Shallan said, though she blushed as she said it. further down "I'm not doing anything to you" she said "I'm just curious." And honestly, she was. She'd thought about this. Perhaps more than it deserved consideration That's Shallan being genuine. Adolin doesn't pay attention to women for long, because they don't truly pay attention to him. It is a play that is acted out because it is expected of him. Shallan did not bring up poop out of shock value, but because she genuinely wanted to know. That scene threw out the whole "when on a date, don't be yourself because you might scare the person off" out the window. Shallan said "hey this is me, you want to keep talking?" and Adolin replied "wow really? cool! Let's do this again!" When you find something that feels right, when you find someone that you feel really groks who you are and what you are about, things speed up. I went from thinking I need to be boyfriend and girlfriend with someone for about three years before contemplating moving in together, and five years before proposing. After meeting my wife, we dated for a year before we started discussing moving in together. Finding and buying the coop took about a year, and after moving in together and being there for me amazingly when I lost my mother to cancer, I proposed. Year later we got married. Every step of the way felt right. When people first heard we were moving in together, some thought we were moving fast. Meanwhile I couldn't be happier. To you it struck you as crude, to Adolin it was endearing. Also consider given that is the form their flirting took place, and you felt it was crude, would you really want to read more? Word of Radiance page 879 For now, he wanted to think - though he was still glad for her presence. And aware of it in more ways than one, pushed against him and wearing the wet, increasingly tattered dress. His conversation with the Stormfather, however, drew his attention away from that sort of thought. Syl. Had he really....killed her? he had heard her weeping earlier, hadn't he? So when they wake up, he notices her physical proximity. But he had just found out he killed her brother, and killed Syl. I don't know about you, but as it states in the book, my mind would not jump back to the curves of the woman next to me and continuing our friendly banter. They both have a lot on their mind. Shallan just confessed to killing her father. A fact that she has been avoiding since she actually did the deed. That would weigh heavily on a person's mind. So given the content of the scene, the travel back was more than likely in companionable silence. Warbreaker As already pointed out, the main content over the course of weeks/months was each night Siri stripping down, jumping up and down on the bed moaning, and then once the spying individuals leave, reading together. The purpose of that was to demonstrate Susebron's naivety, and show the simplicity of two people connecting on a personal and intimate level without needing all the pomp and circumstance of a date or sexual tension. They were comfortable together. Siri felt safe with Susebron and Susebron felt safe with Siri. Personally I see a scene painted in a dark room, by light from a fireplace, reading a book together, smiling and learning together to be very romantic. Mistborn era 2 As I stated it was Wax and Steris truly discovering what makes them who they are. She may have grated on you, but Wax saw something in her that resonated with him. He saw past the cover. I think it speaks volumes about their relationship that Wax can start abhorring a task Steris enjoys, and learn to appreciate it and in fact enjoy it with her. I do not see why Adolin needs to start a physical advance in order for her to know he is attracted to her and visa versa. What does it truly add to the story, or even their narrative in their relationship? Adolin never reached that point in courting with a woman before. It is all new to him. He is nervous. It shows a vulnerability and sense of humanity to the stereotypical "pretty rich boy". Everyone sees him as a womanizer and spoiled brat, but the reality couldn't be furthest from the truth. Shallan realizes that, which is why she makes the first move on him. All these relationships referenced work differently than normal because those relationships are used to help develop the character. Kaladin is not going to act the way Adolin acts who is not going to act the way Wax acts who is not going to act the way Shallan acts who is not going to act the way Steris reacts in a relationship. They are all unique individuals. I didn't respond to the rest of that post as those points I covered earlier in this post. So you identified with the character and felt she should get with the main character. Not everyone identifies with Marasi. Quite a few people identify with Steris, and for them it is nice to see that relationship play out because it may be harder for them to connect with another person on a deeper emotional level due to all the factors she is dealing with. I am very regimented and scheduled with my life, yet my wife light heartily teases me and understands. We understand each other, which is why we love each other. Wax understands Steris. He doesn't understand Marasi. So you did not like the crude comment about poop from Shallan to Adolin. Nyali and I were making fun of the poop comment, but that comes off as patronizing to you? I apologize if so, but it was not meant as such, and pretty much everything Nyali said. As well as I corrected the downvote too Nyali. I think I covered everything. Whew, took awhile to type all of that. I will close this post with the point that you did ask and I quote: What are your thoughts guys? We told you our thoughts, and did it as respectfully as we could while disagreeing with you. You did ask.
  11. Ah but of course, it would only be proper. (Yeah, sorry about that. Right after I posted I realized that was a big unfair assumption on my part )
  12. LOL, yes it must be! Your husband and my wife will understand that our meeting was foretold in the stars as our gazes met across the written word of this forum. So.........ummmmm.......now what to talk about.......how about them yankees? lolol
  13. So I am going to do my best to try and not to offend because I actually really dislike the type of romance Luciellav is referring to. So this is totally and completely just my own opinion, and any negative comments regarding the type of romance are purely pointed at the type of romance and have nothing to do with Luciellav as a person or her own preferences. Hopefully that covers it. So I have always felt that kind of romance comes off derivative, artificial, lazy writing, and takes away from the plot of the story. Real life (in my opinion) doesn't work that way. There is not some great catastrophe, or occurrence that throws two people together and then their eyes lock and they long for each other. It takes away from actual relationship development. Things like spending time together organically and talking genuinely are what build real relationships. Even with the Steris and Wax situation where she gets all excited over his roguish hero mystique, there are still times where they are together getting to know who they each other outside of drama. The train car scene is the prime example. Wax learns to see Steris not as an awkward, dry, OCD laden, judgmental, and boring woman, but as an intriguing, clever, passionate, and strong woman. That is what begins the attraction for her. Marasi and Wax conversely realize that any attraction was purely at face value. Marasi saw Wax as a heroic idol, that got shattered when she met and got to know him. Wax saw Marasi as a young naive girl that happens to hold the same interests that he needs to protect and never fully accepts that she is capable and strong on her own. Steris is not a damsel in distress, she is a capable member of the team. Marasi is also a capable member of the team, but when working on her own/in her own way. It takes far more to build that level of interaction, than to throw two characters into a dangerous situation, and suddenly they realize they are meant for each other. I think there is even a clinical term for those kind of relationships though I blank on it now. I might get some flame for this, but a huge example of lazy relationship writing in my opinion is Jim Butcher. Sorry I ended up going on a rant. To sum up, I like Brandon's style of romance because it doesn't take center, or even second stage. The world ending should be a priority. Whether you like a girl or boy or not, life still moves on. Events in the world still occur regardless of a relationship status, and I feel books should reflect that. I am sorry if I come off critical or derisive. Just the kind of romance I see in books regularly irks me, and I tend to skip over the scenes because they seldom if at all add anything to the actual story. edit: LOL now i feel better to know someone feels the same way I do Nyali to the point that we wrote very similar arguments at the exact same time.
  14. I thought the order was that Odium shattered Devotion and Dominion. Seons and Skaze came about and the cognitive realm is a dangerous place because of the unguided Dor. Many many years pass. The chasm occurs which screws up the aons and the elantrians causing the reod. So It looks to me that the dangerousness of the cognitive realm is not connected to the Reod at all. In fact despite the chasm line being added to Elantris making the Elantrians good again, I do not believe changed anything about the dangerousness of the cognitive realm. So if that is the case, then Hoid could have come and gone whenever and however he wanted since it seems the cognitive realm was still screwed up, but he was able to use the well in the end scene.
  15. So two minor nitpicks First sandling "poop" is crystal like. It is clear, not brown. Terken sandlings are very rare, and it is believed terken because they get to be so big/old which can't happen in shallow sand due to the network of vines.
  16. I dunno. When Khriss is viewing the class without Kenton's knowledge, she comments how the maester teaches the class how to put sand underneath an object to lift it up. As she watches, she notices how one of the students is able to pick up the object from the top which is harder, and the student has a self satisfied smirk. That student is still far and away less powerful than Drile and Kenton's father, yet simply because he is more powerful than those around him, he acts arrogant. Kenton comments on numerous occasions how the whole structure of the Diem is built on strength. If you are stronger than someone, they are your subordinate and have to do whatever you say. This is further exemplified by the old tradition of trial by combat. The way it is set up, lends it to the stronger wins. I don't actually have to be right, as long as I kill you, my might makes right. Finally Elorin is pretty high in the maesters. I believe he could have attained an even higher rank but he chose not to. He was not arrogant. I believe it is more the culture than the power itself that resulted in the arrogance. But that is my own take on it.
  17. Exactly. We plain and simple just do not have enough information.
  18. As there does not seem to be a quote feature on this page, I will bold my answers (edit: LOL and now I realize the quote button is greyed out unless you move your mouse over the post. whoops! lol) I'm sorry Pathfinder, that's not something that's going to happen,it would take up too much space. I think you mistake the purpose of me listing all these facts like this. It's meant for people who don't keep up as closely with new information, most of this stuff was posted a couple weeks ago, or for those who want a brief overview of the new interviews as a jumping off point. I don't even include every new question because that would take up too much space, and there's not much point in me simply posting a whole interview on this article. It's meant to be a quick overview of what was said. I'll add links to the interviews themselves next time, but most of these use essentially the same words that Brandon did. If you disagree with my interpretation, feel free to discuss it here, that's what comments are for. I hope I did not come off personally critical or confrontational Windrunner. I was not stating that to say your interpretation is wrong, and I am right. I was stating to say that there can be two ways to look at the WoB and I felt it would be helpful to those viewing it to be able to reference the source and derive their own conclusions from it. I understand there is a space issue which is why I whole heartily agree with yours and Chaos's idea to include links to the WoB themselves. I think that solves both issues perfectly. If you have specific issues with the interpretations here, please do say so. But I do think there are space concerns. Full quotes take up a huge amount of space. I intend to have future things of this nature to involve direct links, however. Those we will have. That way the balance is better on this issue. This article is already one of the longest articles on 17S news. I like long articles, but they do need to be distilled appropriately. Additionally we generally discuss factoids (with people like Windy, Weiry, Zach, and I, and some more) and stand by minor interpretations made. We are always happy to discuss, however, as is already occurring in the comments. Sure, I would be happy to . So basically the WoB I am referencing is this: QUESTION Can spren be put back together through the Bondsmith? Like Shards can be combined? BRANDON SANDERSON They can be combined, but I won’t say if the Bondsmith is the method. I bolded what I feel is the pertinent parts for my point. I took this to mean that the questioner was asking regarding a spren that was killed via an oath being broken, and then the radiant dying. That could a bondsmith, whose literal name is regarding smithing bonds, could use their abilities to reforge the bonds for the dead spren to new people to increase the ranks of the knights radiant. Potentially turning all those dead shardblades into new knights. That since Shards (big S to refer to Shards as in Harmony and etc), could be picked up by people and combined (as they were once a whole like a dead spren was), and potentially reform Adonalsium, could Bondsmiths do the same for dead spren. Now again, that is totally my own interpretation. Not saying I am any more right or wrong. That is my own take from those words that is completely different from the take away that different spren such as creation spren and lifespren can be combined into a new spren. Or I could be completely misunderstanding your interpretation Windrunner. The fact is, the ability for me to misunderstand your interpretation, or having an interpretation of my own that is completely different than yours means people should be able to see the WoB itself so they can come to their own conclusion. Which as I stated, I whole heartily agree with you both. Including a link to the WoB itself right under your own interpretation allows people to decide for themselves if they agree with what you came up with or not and fosters further discussion which is the core purpose of these forums.
  19. Way of Kings page 831 "Journey before destination. there are always several ways to achieve a goal. Failure is preferable to winning through unjust means. Protecting ten innocents is not worth killing one. In the end, all men die. How you lived will be far more important to the Almighty than what you accomplished." So killing one innocent is never worth saving ten. Jasnah was stopping three murderers, to protect the lives of countless innocents. She could have gone to the authorities and pushed her stature as a princess to get something done. She could have brought a group of soldiers or officers with her and apprehended the men, or she could end their lives. All could potentially accomplish the same goal of preventing the murderers from continuing to kill. The only difference is the first two could still result in the men getting back on the street and killing more people.
  20. I took that as to try and get the recovering humanity back up to a level of technology and know how to get ready for the next Desolation that they herald is coming. Basically I take it as "hey a whole storm of bad things is coming. You need to get ready for it. Here is how you make weapons to kill the things coming. Here is how you heal people to hopefully not have a ton of people die when the things coming to kill you come. Here is how you can get more food to store and ration to survive the things coming to kill you.
  21. So my theory about Prof in other worlds, is they were looking for a powered Prof that wasn't corrupted. But that doesn't mean there isn't a reality where Prof and Tia never got powers, had a daughter and she ended up an epic. As to the famine, now that you have superheroes that are good people, there is a high likelihood that the famine could be repaired by anyone with earth powers. I believe regarding Abraham Brandon has stated either he didn't want to reveal it and let it remain a mystery, or that it would come up in the new series. I forget which. Calamity was an extra dimensional entity. We might learn what and why he was in the new series considering it deals with dimension hopping. Obliteration got away and will probably end up a reoccurring villain in that world. Dunno, and dunno lol.
  22. I had posted a response to this similar question in another thread. Life before death is in reference that killing one innocent to preserve the life of many is not acceptable. The men Jasnah killed we not innocent. They regular patrolled that area to hurt and kill people. Had she not done what she did, they would have continued to hurt and kill people. They attacked first. Yes, Jasnah knew what she was getting into and yes, she ended their lives when she did not have to, but at no point were those men innocent. Otherwise no order could fight the voidbringers without breaking their oaths as they are killing living beings. edit: to clarify, had Jasnah sent Shallan in alone, and let her die at their hands, so she could catch the killers "red handed" and thus have an excuse to kill them, then that would have broken the first vow.
  23. The elendel basin has a whole network of rivers that are used for transporting goods. It is used so often, that it was natural that the Vanishers used a barge to go up against the train tracks and steal the car. On the planet of Sixth of Dusk, it heavily dependent on boat travel. So there are just two examples of two planets where travel over water is important and regularly used.
  24. I disagree with the paraphrasing of new information. There is already one instance I can see where I recall the WoB and disagree with the interpretation. I am not saying I am right, but I feel posting the WoB themselves would allow people to derive their own conclusions.
  25. I forget the whole quote, but there was a part that said how Odium was god's divine hatred without the other attributes to be a guiding force. I take that to mean when all the intents were together in harmony (the word, not the shard), they guided each other. Basically what happened in Divergent. Normal people have the whole range of emotions that are balanced and governed by the others, while the genetically damaged are utterly focused on one attribute and come into conflict with the other genetically damaged with different attributes.
