There is a whole thread on this. A point one person made is there are speed shooters in real life that can unload a sixshooter incredibly fast so it is not a stretch. I forgot the numbers to it though.
-
Lol then yep we are missing a rather large piece of the puzzle in the sand. I wonder if in the canon graphic novel edition will go further into than the book did or will we have to wait for book 2 (4 through 6) or book 3 (7 through 9) to find out.
-
Lol actually that was my point (assuming I am understanding what you wrote correctly). A misting that can only burn steel can burn Scadrialian steel assuming it is in the right percentages and can also burn Rosharian steel assuming it is in the right percentages. Steel is steel regardless the planet of origin. So if water is the key or focus, it would not matter the terrestrial origin of the sand as long as it is sand.
-
Hmmm, though if the water itself is invested, then wouldn't drinking it immediately "refuel" a sandmage? Basically if a sandmage had one of those beer hats but with water instead of beer, he should be able to master far longer than he would normally. But that is not the case. A sandmaster still needs time to recover. Maybe the water has to be metabolized for the sandmaster to use its investiture? A way to know one way or the other regarding your algae theory is if Kenton mastered sand in a sealed vial black, and then left said sand in the sun but still sealed in said vial. If the sand remains black, then it proves that since all the algae in the sand in the vial died, it could not reproduce and turn it white again. Unfortunately I do not recall seeing that occur. I like this theory the most. The water is not invested itself, but the act of mastering sand, turns the water into a gateway to manipulate the sand. But that makes me wonder, would that enable a sand master to master any sand (like how a misting or mistborn can burn any metal that is the correct percentages regardless the planet of origin)? And would then any sand turn black when mastered and then back to white when left out under any sun(like how any metal burned by a misting or mistborn disappears regardless the planet of origin)?

So I am going to post this once, not that the quotes will probably matter but I will attempt it anyway: Alloy of Law page 6 Deflected by his steel bubble, the bullet zipped past his ear. Another inch to the right, and he'd have gotten it in the forehead - steel bubble or no. Alloy of Law page 25 The street thug jerked his rifle toward Wax and fired. The steel bubble barely deflected it, and the bullet tugged through the fabric of Wax's coat, just missing his ribs. Alloy of Law page 26 Bullets pierced the mists all around him. Steel bubble or not, he should have fallen to one of them. It was pure luck that saved his life as he landed on another roof and rolled to a stop, prone, protected from the gunfire by a parapet wall. Alloy of Law page 99 He began gently Pushing away from himself in the way that created a steel bubble of force to interfere with bullets. It wouldn't protect him completely, but it would help. So the steel bubble is not a solid fixed plane in which to deflect everything coming at it. It is a slight pressure when the bullet comes into range that distorts the trajectory. Otherwise as shown, it wouldn't matter how many bullets were flying nor what caliber. But as you all can see from the quotes the amount of bullets flying, and the caliber (gun vs rifle) does show to matter. Now take an M85 machine gun, which is both a far higher caliber, as well as lays down far more bullets per second and the mistborn will get hit. The mistborn cannot use duralumin in response, as the machine gun will be continually be laying down fire. So the first 10 rounds shot off would be thrown back, to which will be followed up by the other 90 rounds that cannot be stopped as the mistborn drained their steel with the push. edit: Found even more quotes: Shadows of Self page 160 With the bubble on, his Allomantic instincts seached out any bits of metal moving quickly toward him, and would push on those with increasing force as they drew closer. He was getting better and better at that. Standing and letting Darriance shoot at his chest while wearing about twelve inches of padding and armor had helped. He couldn't dodge bullets, but the bubble helped. Shadows of Self page 181 Wax's steel bubble deflected a number of the shots, bending them away to cut empty air. The bullets trailed streaks in the mist. One, however, clipped him on the arm Bands of Mourning page 88 He set up his steel bubble, a faint Push away from himself in all directions that excluded his own weapons. It was far from perfect - he'd been shot several times while using it - but it did help.

Or you could put up a bendalloy bubble, and store speed while reading a book or something. Then your day isn't wasted and you stored a bunch of speed with time left to do your normal day to day activities. Not everything has to be combat orientated lol.
-
That and Scadrial's medical technology would be further along than Roshar.
-
Well first, I do like your theory so anything I state contrary to it is not in an effort to disprove it, but to work it through what we know to lend it more credibility. Two more things I noticed in my word searches that may add or not matter are this: 1. regardless how long you use the sand or how much sand you use, it turns black. So the water or power would be evenly distributed through the entire stream of sand used. There is no portion that is lighter or darker than the rest. Any sand used turns black 2. with the first scene of the book, we see how bright the sand glows and how dark of black it is turned indicates the level of power of the initiate. Drile was so bright that it could be seen from far away and turned the sand black. Kenton on the other hand was a little glimmer, barely seen unless shaded, and his sand turned a light shade of gray.
-
Your theory makes sense in a lot of cases, except for one thing. If that is the case, then why doesn't sand being mastered burn sandlings like acid? And add to that, why then does the terken shell negate it instead of melting?
-
Well I just had a thought. I think the sandmasters do something to the sand when they use it that is not innate to the sand itself. Basically if the investiture was in the sand, and when the sand is used to attack a terken sandling, it turns black and loses its power, then why don't terken sandlings create a black trail of sand wherever they go? So something changes the sand's nature when a sandmaster uses it. At least in my opinion
-
Could that be partly what makes the deep sandlings terken? That theoretically the smaller sandlings eat the sand (bauxite), and metabolize and refine it into their shells. Then the deep sandlings eat those smaller ones, thereby eating the "refined" bauxite in higher concentrations refining it further making their shells anti investiture. But here is a thought I just had. If the sand itself holds the investiture that the sandmasters use (hence light sand darkening when used), then why don't deep sandlings leave a black sand trail wherever they go? So something about the sandmasters change the sand when they use it.

It is easier than stopping it cold, but does not mean it is easy period. Another website (though admittedly I have not checked it for accuracy yet), has stated that modern weaponry has as least tripled the speed of bullets when compared to "the ole west". This is not a negligible matter. But I see you are set in your thinking so I will not continue to berate the point.

Again I have to disagree. Those are far more powerful in force and number than the pistols of "the ole west". Wax's bubble deflects enough to inch it slightly to the side. The firepower of a tanks's machine gun is far stronger. A standard modern bullet goes 1,126 ft/s. A bullet from a M85 machine gun goes 2,887 ft/s. Two and a half times faster. Please refer to the wiki link below: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M85_machine_gun

We have resulted in a loop. It goes right back to Kingsdaughter613 and my posts. It is an issue if it is important to the story to be an issue. Would it be viewed as so difficult to write a LGBT character if the world that character is in was accepting of that? No worry about how their parents see them? No worry about a law forbidding how you feel? No worry about a religion damning you? The race is not a short cut. It was viewed as abhorrent in its time (and somewhat still to this day), but when a couple......actually no. Not going to repeat myself. I stated how I felt in the previous posts. Rather not beat a dead horse. I respect everyone's thoughts, and I hope you all respect my own.

No idea. All we know is: 1. the everstorm is new 2. the everstorm is not what brought the voidbringers in the past since it is new 3. stormform is not voidbinding as per WoB So the everstorm could turn all the parshmen into stormform to herald the voidbringers, or the stormform was merely to bring the everstorm, and the next stage of transformation is something completely different.

Heterosexual relationships vs homosexual relationships are no different than same race relationships vs interracial relationships. To the people involved, it is just a relationship. No unique title required. It is when a family is disapproving that it becomes "different". It is when a politician passes a law that it becomes "different". It is when a religion says it is a sin that it becomes "different". I understand you are in no way, shape, or form stating you think it is different Argent, just I feel by focusing on it being so difficult because it is "different" prevents a lot of authors from touching the subject, for fear of portraying it badly, so it continues to be viewed as "different". Personally I am a straight heterosexual white male that is currently engaged to a straight heterosexual Hispanic female. Just because of these facts, does not mean I cannot see and understand that a relationship is a relationship regardless who is involved (assuming of course those involved are consenting adults of course). Hopefully I conveyed myself properly and did not come off confrontational.

We haven't seen any thunderclasts in action (other then just popping out of the ground, or a smoking corpse), and stormform is not voidbinding as per WoB that have said we have not seen voidbinding yet. So it is impossible to determine the effectiveness of voidbinding. If we saw all the knights radiants and their abilities, then we could say "well this is how powerful the knights radiant are, and the voidbringers are a challenge to them, so the voidbringers must have a decent power they can bring to bear" . But we don't. We have seen some powers of four orders(windrunner, lightweaver, elsecaller, edgedancer). So unless when referencing parshendi, you mean to use them in their warform, we cannot comment on what the voidbringers can do. edit: the only "voidbringer" creature we have seen are the ink creatures (forgot their name) in Dalinar's vision, and that creature could be dispatched one on one by a trained "human" (saying human in quotes to show he did not have any special powers nor equipment in the vision).

I love the Mistborn trilogy the most out of Sanderson's books, but even I can admit a mistborn deflecting a high caliber machine gun that is typically on top of a tank is a stretch. Wax deflecting regular bullets still has a chance to graze or hit him. And if the mistborn used duralumin to deflect the bullets, only a portion of the bullets would be deflected, as the machine gunner would still have a whole strip of bullets to continue laying down cover fire. If the mistborn was stealthy, then yes, totally could take out a tank. But one on one, running/jumping towards it? Not so sure on that.

That was my point. Varangian stated that Harmony wouldn't be in any trouble and it would be simple for Harmony to deal with Odium. I was showing how effective Odium's strategy is.
-
Although we have not seen it yet, Sanderson has been quoted in saying as well as in the Ars Arcanum of one of the AoL books to state that twinborn combos have a bonus "effect" from their interaction. Much like how knights radiant windrunners and skybreakers both share gravitation, the interaction with their other surge (adhesion and division respectively) would yield a separate effect.
-
An enemy that although defended is stationary and knows not what you do, is a vulnerable enemy for he or she will have limited resources and cannot predict or counter what you will bring to bear. Isolating Harmony, when he is more powerful than Odium is exactly the thing Odium should be doing.

The dwellers in the Fortress [Secret History spoilers]
Pathfinder replied to Ardjet's topic in Mistborn
No worries I agree. Would love to know if they were a splinter group, or actually represented Elantris though. -

Ah then I misunderstood. You are incorrect, healthy Elantrians do not age. They are immortal. Just it can be "draining" as per Sanderson so they chose to end it. But they are very much immortal. There is a WoB for that. -
I agree with the consensus that Scadrial will win. Just a shame that we haven't had a chance to truly see Roshar magically "in its prime" to see what forces it could fully bring to bear.
-
I think Odium's fear is Harmony's power but also what Harmony represents. If Harmony was able to pick up two shards, why not a third? Then a fourth, fifth, and so on. Odium seems like he wants to shatter other shards so he is the only top dog, and doesn't have to pick up any other shards to do it. Now he has an opponent that not only has picked up more than one, can operate with both, but is also a new unknown factor. Odium knows the other shardholders. Knows their personalities, their history, and how they work. Sazed is an unknown.
