Tulcam let out a chuckle. "It's no secret where I'm from; if Raodea wanted to take out Myria, all we would have to do is knock down the door and the whole thing will come crashing down. No offense to you, we don't actually want that to happen, we just don't think Myria would last long in a war. I'm sure things are great and all in your nation, it's just better in mine." Tulcam sounded incredibly confident in what he was saying, almost arrogantly so.

Cadenza raised her eyebrows. "Oh, really?" She folded her arms, the extra-long jacket sleeves drooping. "I'll thank you to keep your opinions to yourself. I happen to think that Myria would easily win."

Tulcam raised his hands up with his voice sounding dead serious, "I'm sorry, I didn't realize that Myria's 'self taught' Dusters would be so dangerous. Although this conversation is fairly pointless, as there's no such thing as a 'fair' war."

"Self-taught may not be as reliable, but I know how to teach myself. Do you? I'm dangerous, maybe even more dangerous than the others."

"Skill is useless without discipline, would you be able to work in a military role? In warfare, it's more often that the more disciplined side wins rather than the more skilled. That's assuming everyone who was 'self taught' was as good at it as yourself."

"No, probably not. But I'm thirteen. Youngest Duster in the history of Myria, remember? They're plenty disciplined."

"Nothing yet. Why, one might think that you're scared or something." The Queen smiled, then crooked her finger. The Qhoral began shaping itself into long bands. The Queen shoved Janice down on the table, and the Qhoral wrapped itself around her wrists and ankles, then latched itself to the table.

"First, let's get little Trace out of your head. She has her own punishment to look forward to."

Summons don't work through quote boxes, 'cuz nobody wants to be summoned when somebody quotes someone else's post.

Janice's conscience was suddenly pulled back into her mind.

"How dare you!" Trace roared. "We could have been something great, but now... all because of your pitiful little friends... now we're both doomed. Do you realize what she's going to do to me? I thought to myself when you won over, 'maybe she'll stay away from her Majesty. Maybe I'll be fine.' But then you decided to come on your own free will, and now I'm the one who has to pay for it! At least she's letting you just die!"

"I'm sorry," Janice whispered. "I'm so sorry, Trace."

Trace shook her head. "No you're not." She took a step back. "You're not sorry."

"Trace--"

"You're not sorry!" Trace shouted. "You hate me!"

Janice turned away. "You're right," she said. "You're right. I do hate you..."

Trace nodded, as if she hadn't actually known, and this had but confirmed her suspicions.

She looked back into Trace's eyes. "But that doesn't mean I can't be sorry."

The image in her mind faded, and her thoughts were pulled back into the real world; a world where a Queen was trying to kill her. A world where she was alone.

"DON'T HURT HER!" Janice screamed, then started sobbing again. "Please..."

"Now listen here . . ." Tulcam paused, looking as if he was changing what he was going to say. "How can you be the 'youngest Duster in history' if your definition of a Duster is 'someone who uses their power.'"

"You gain your power at a certain age. Mine manifested early."

"and because your power manifested early, you are qualified for this job. You know, in the confederacy we have under aged labor laws; something that I understand your factories don't seem to get."

The colonel changed positions into a parade rest, his facing returning to its typical stern expression. "We need to get moving, can you speed them up?"
