The colonel shook his head, "no, why did you kill anyone in the first place?"

"For justice," Cruz answered quietly, "I killed them for their corruption, for their crimes, because God is not here to do it."

While Colonel and Cruz were talking, Maddy slipped away. She enjoyed being a soldier, but the talking part of the job wasn't as appealing to her. As she walked, she saw a young woman standing alone. Aryanna, she thought. Maddy approached her. "How do you know Janice?"

"Beyond the world... gone from thought and time, what's left you has yet to be mourned."

Janice didn't remember anything more than that.

The song faded into wind, and the wind faded into nothing.  Vespyr lay still, mind empty, numb.

"My mom used to sing that to me," Janice said, "before I killed her."

"Some mothers deserve to die,"  Vespyr said coolly.  It felt like the wrong thing to say.  It wasn't sure why it felt that way.

"Justice you say? Was it justice to kill those around them?" The colonel took a firm step towards Cruz, "was it justice to kill Staff Sergeant Kiley Feldman? What was her sin? What about Second Lieutenant Almad Biently, what did he do?"

Shidala is with Aryanna

“Who are you?” Shidala asked out of curiosity? Knowing more people will be helpful if will have to fight them.

"She would've." Janice nodded, closing her eyes. "But she isn't here anymore."

"Then you have no home to return to," Vespyr pointed out, in an amiable, compromising way, it thought.

I didn't kill them, Cruz wanted to say, and I wouldn't have, if it hadn't been for Trace.

But he didn't. For now, he was quiet.

"It was just life, then. I thought that was the way things were."

"It is often the way that life is," Vespyr said, "People die alone, unloved, and despised all the time.  Why should anyone expect differently for themselves?"

The colonel seemed to be building up momentum, "what did you think, that murdering so many in cold blood would be worth it? Because you thought to get justice on your own, hundreds of people will never see their loved ones again, ever. Now what about all of those people who have to suffer through loosing someone dear to them? Who's going to give them 'justice?'"

"That's not the way it turned out, though. Then I met Jay, Lloyd, Aryanna, Cadenza... they were the first people in a long time to love me."

"Then you will die more fortunate than most," Vespyr commented.

"Of course," Vespyr said, nodding.  "To be loved is to cause pain to others and to yourself when the time for parting comes.  Most must weigh the benefit of the joy against the pain."

Aw, why'd Maddy have to leave him lol

"The goal was to kill the corrupt leaders and all I did was kill the corrupt leaders," Cruz said, "I didn't anticipate Trace's... spree."

"But it can't be! How could always being alone and scared be better than happiness? When I was with them, I was happier than I had ever been!"

"Then you answered your own question," Vespyr said, smiling.  Children.
