Mahad invisibly zipped away and started to search for Glint.

When they got back to the house, Ben went upstairs to his room. He picked up a book and started reading in an attempt to distract himself from his tiredness. The only thing keeping him awake at the point was Glint’s persistent prodding.

James caught Leona's grin, and smiled back- he was no mind reader, but it seemed fairly obvious what was making her smile. "This is wonderful" he said, grabbing a hot dog, and a roasting stick

"Hi. My name's Evelyn. Do you want any help with those?" It seemed like there was a lot of groceries, and she was starting to feel a bit awkward just sitting around.

Shana mirrored James movement and started to roast a hot dog over the fire.

"I like fire."

She said quietly and looked into the flames. Guilt surged when she thought of Rob, how she had burned him, but still. She liked fire. It was hers, it was life.

"Will you stay here James? Move in with us? I'm sorry, I missed a lot, because of -"

She paused, remembered Ashlyn was here and finished.

"Training."

Mahad flew over to Ben and formed his body to a dragon again. He sat down on his shoulder and picked at Ben's ear. In the end wanted to ask if Ben was hungry, but he couldn't talk to him, and talking to Glint was too easy. So he playfully imitated picking at the ear a second time and then pointed his nose towards Ben's stomach.

Ben looked up from his book to the little dragon on his shoulder blearily. Shana’s spren was pointing at his stomach. 

”Are you asking if I’m hungry?”

Glint moved next to Mahad, intending to watch the conversation with Ben. Perhaps he could learn a few things about communicating with other humans.

She asked quietly, quickly looking over to Ashlyn. She didn't want to exclude her, but she needed to talk to someone, and Doc was busy. James was another bondsmith, maybe he could help as well.

Ben nodded and slowly rose to his feet, carefully placing the book on his bed. He was rather hungry, although hadn’t been planning on expending the effort to go downstairs unless asked. He followed Mahad out the door and descended the stairs, nearly falling a few times. Seeing the light from the fire, he wandered outside and sat down next to Shana.

Flid walked outside and sat on the mats, relaxed. This was a strange family, but it felt like that was what made it special. "Hey, anyone got some playing cards? I got a hankering to play blackjack."

Shana squeezed his hand and then leaned slightly against him. She made sure to support her body weight herself, her was tired enough, but she enjoyed to be close to him.

"What do you want on your hot dog?"

She asked and reached out for a second stick to roast dinner for Ben. Mahad settled on her shoulder, invisible again.

"I don't have cards. But there should be some in the living room."

She replied to Flid and smiled at him. It was great to sit outside, with all of them around. Her family.

Flid smiled back. "Thanks, Shana."

He stood up and went inside, and looked around for a cupboard. That's were games were usually stored, right? He found one and looked through it. Wow, they have a lot of games here. Battleship, monopoly, Clue, Life, Dungeons and Dragons, and more. He selected a pack of cards in particularly good condition and walked back outside, although not before grabbing a pack of ritz.

"Hey! Who's up for a game of Blackjack!"

Jamie stared into the flames, considering various items to roast over it.

Edwin sat there, with a hot dog held over the flames, absently watching that nothing flamable fell close to the fire. This was good, and last night too, after a fashion. It had been a really good weekend, really intense.

"I can't believe tomorrow we come back to old, ordinary school." he said to no one in particular. After these two days, just thinking about it felt like purgatory.

“If you wouldn’t mind, that would be great.” One of Rob’s oaths was “I will stand where others fall” but even he had a limit to how many groceries he could carry in one go.

“Do you want to join us? We’re all sitting around the fire having hotdogs and this other food Shana told us about. It’s just that we have a visitor, and she’s normal, so no surgebinding unfortunately.

Evelyn smiled and grabbed the last of the bags. "I'm happy to help. It definitely beats standing around awkwardly. You say they're doing a campfire? That would explain where everyone went. There seems to be some sort of weird attraction to campfires. Somebody starts one and everyone just gravitates towards it."

“Agreed,” Rob said, slowly walking out of the kitchen. “I guess it’s evolutionary — if you believe in that,” Rob didn’t want to  offend Evelyn.

Funny thing, the thoughts of evolution. What evolutionary advantage was having the broken become surgebinders? Seemed counter-intuitive to him.

"If it were evolutionary, then wouldn't people want to stay away from fire? Fire is dangerous. You would probably be hard pressed to find someone who hasn't been burned at one time or another. I've heard people say before that it's cool to look at though, so maybe that's the reason?" Evelyn followed Rob out of the kitchen, glad he had taken the lead. Who knew how long she would have been lost if Evelyn had tried to find it on her own?
