Idk if this is just me but the phrase "claps at" sounds very aggressive.

Just imagine someone staring at you intently, slowly coming closer and closer. They raise their hands, and begin to clap. You stare in confusion and slight terror and they increase tempo, clapping faster and harder, all while never breaking eye contact.

Actually, I think of it more as shoving my hips out, extending my hands, and clapping like a cheerleader with locked elbows, all with an incredibly large grin on my face!
