Oh, well, today just got worse.

OK, so we moved last year, but we still have ownership of the old house.  It had a lot of work that needed done on it before it was ready to go on the market, much of which is MUCH easier to handle without anyone living in it.  Since we paid off that house way early, there was no longer a mortgage on it, so we were able to afford these sorts of shenanigans.  The foundation just got fixed, and now we're looking at getting the rest of the improvements done.

The estimate came back from the first general contractor.  It's...a lot more than we were expecting.  And of course they didn't give us a job-by-job breakdown, so we can't do stuff like prioritize and figure out what we could probably do ourselves and know how much that'd knock off the price.  Nor can we know how much the pricing might be off on a particular piece, so it's hard to just go out and do research to figure out if they're trying to rip us off without another quote on the whole dang thing.

And now on the selfish front, I am already grouchy and hormonal and was REALLY looking forward to just slinking off home and getting coddled.  Only now James is going to be in a horrid mood, too, and I'd feel like a total heel trying to demand that level of attention from him.

EDIT:  OK, James was not nearly as grouchy as I expected, so I got lots of soothing snuggles when I got home.  That helped.  And we're asking for a breakdown of the estimate of doom, and are gathering other companies to get estimates from.  So we will figure this out.

I am still highly suspicious of a company that gives you an estimate for work that needs doing without an itemized breakdown on that paperwork.

What happened?

Silver lining, you now get a break, and you have one more job to put on your CV to make yourself look impressive!

My English Professor literally just now emailed me an assignment I have to have completed before I get to tomorrows class. Which is in twelve hours. YOU CAN"T GIVE US AN ASSIGNMENT ON SUCH SHORT NOTICE! And here I was hoping I might be able to get to bed early today, but guess not.

Does he assume everyone is online 24h a day? o.O What if you were having a family evening, playing Scrabble and not checking your email before going to bed? That's crazy  :o

But Mestiv, everyone should be constantly checking their email! If those darned kids are always going to be Snapwhispering and Texttubing on their smartphones, they might as well do something USEFUL. #terribleteacherlogic <_<

That's why computers and everything is evil. Because people assume they can contact you anytime.

Not that I remeber those days, but before mobile phones your parents couldn't just call you to tell you to do something... Before internet teachers couldn't just email you assignments...

I'm gonna wrap my mobile tech in Faraday's net whenever I feel like I need to disconnect and later I will just say that there was no reception. Brilliant.

I think you could justify that you didn't see the assignment.

I definitely see my student's emails before I go to bed but that doesn't mean I answer them.

Your university/school doesn't have a 24 hour email policy? The policy at my University was that students, faculty, and staff were expected to check their email once every 24 hour period. As such, Professors had to give at least a 24 hour notice before they could expect students to have an assignment completed. So checking emails in the morning every day meant you were safe from unexpected emails or assignments.

I wonder if my university has such a policy... I generally just do that (and more), but I wonder if it is formally codified.

Personally, Patar, if the professor gives you trouble, you could file a formal complaint and he would get in big trouble. Universities take formal complaints very seriously.

Fortunately, it was a smaller assignment. It only took me an hour. But still, it was such an inconvenience to have to do. She claimed that she sent out the assignment in order to teach us to check our email more, but sometimes there are reasons that we don't check our emails. If I had decided to go to bed early last night, I would've been straight out of luck. I don't know if filing a complaint is worth it, I don't know whether or not she punished those who didn't do it. It all just seems so unfair. If she does something like this again, I might have to do something about it.

If I were you, I would go to her office and say that that was pretty unacceptable. At least 24 hour notice for assignments. Say exactly what you said, "If I went to bed early I'd be punished for that?"

Make sure you write it on the instructor evaluations. Maybe those are not read at your university but at mine they are very seriously discussed.

Yeah, like Chaos said, I'd do something about it now. There are a hundred perfectly valid reasons why a student might not check their email. They were going through a dead zone and couldn't get to it. Their internet went out. There was a family emergency and they were at the hospital with a loved one. It's perfectly valid for this teacher to want her students to check their email more, but sending out a last-minute assignment so she can punish those who didn't is beyond petty and extremely unprofessional.

Alright, I'll definitely confront her about it.

Today really pisses me off. I know you're supposed to take everything with a heaping tablespoon of salt, but when your cousin is a actor/writer, he knows exactly how to say something so that it's believable, no matter your previous mindset.  <_<

Why am I so gullible?!

Just do what I do: nod and play along until they either admit it's a joke or go away so you can google it.

Unfortunately, when the words "Coldplay concert" are spoken, logic decides today's as good a day as any to take a field trip. :P
