Is this not a Day cycle? We have what, 17 players left? WE NEED TO TALK. We're hitting the crucial swing point, where if we slack off, the Spiked will win. If you suspect me, fine. I've tried to help the village as best as I can.

For the last time, this is my Spiked suspicion list:

Hero

Mark

Elbereth

Ripple

Weiry

Although I do, without question, suspect Mailliw, I do agree that discussion is always a good thing - and something that I must confess to not having aided this game. In the interests of allowing greater movement here, and because Mailliw does have a ring of exasperation that, on some intuional level is making me believe his innocence slightly more, I'm going to vote Hero.

Huh. Funny, I was just getting on to say we need to be discussing more, even if we are decided on our lynchee.

So by my reckoning I am (or was) one of the top suspicions of Maill, Alvron, Haelbarde, and now Orlok. There are probably a few others who suspect me as well. I can't say I'm too surprised- usually by this point in the game I've become a prime target for suspicion, whether or not I've been evil. However this game I fail to see exactly why. I admit I haven't been the most useful this game, what with activity coming in short bursts here and there, but I have tried my best to help the villagers win whenever I could.

Obviously Hael can no longer respond, but to the rest of you: can I ask why exactly you suspect me so? I'll answer any questions truthfully.

Edit: I will say, too, that if by some freak circumstance Maill ISN'T evil, then we've pretty much lost the game. Because if Maill dies and is innocent I'll almost certainly be next, and- even though none of you have any reason to believe me- *I* know that I'm innocent. Which means that in a couple cycles we'll be down two more villagers plus whoever the Spiked kill.

I definitely agree with you that we need more discussion. However, letting Mailliw off the hook isn't going to solve anything. I remember one game where I was an Eliminator, and was as exasperated as Mailliw is getting. That's not evidence towards his innocence. In addition, it looks like the Eliminators are going to let this lynch go through. Whether that means we're wrong, or if the Eliminators are sacrificing a teammate remains to be seen. So In the interest of discussion let's consider both possibilities.

If Mailliw is guilty. Well, that's definitely the best outcome, but we still need other suspects. Mailliw has indicated 5 players in his suspicion list. I would imagine he would include both innocent and guilty people to throw us off the scent. Of the people in the list, I would suspect Ripple the most. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Mailliw hasn't suspected her very much until recently.

On the other hand, if Mailliw is innocent, then we have a serious problem. Then we can take his list at face value, and hone in on a new suspect. Of the people listed, I would suspect Mark the most if Mailliw is innocent. He's just the right amount of active, and his conversation with the Spiked Lurcher still strikes me as odd. What are your thoughts?

What are your thoughts?

That if you kill me, you are about to be in big trouble. Would you even consider any other lynch targets?

If Maill is innocent, his suspicions aren't necessarily correct, but we can trust them to be without misleading intent. If Maill turns out to be guilty, his list becomes very helpful, especially with how he has been pushing to lynch Hero.

There are 2 hours left. If you're all set on killing me, fine. When I'm shown good, listen to this please:

Kill Mark next, then Hero. If a Mistborn finally gets lucky enough to pull Steel, do this for me. Elb or Jain should be next, with Ripple and Weiry after that.

There are 16 players left. Of those, only 12 are active enough to (probably) vote. It would be reasonable to estimate there are 4 spiked left. While it is possible some are among the inactives, it is probably safer in determining how much time we have left to suppose they are not. So we likely have 8 players to their 4. However, voting power also depends on emotional allomancy. There are 2 active soothers. The one who soothed Alv last cycle was likely Spiked (they disregarded Hael's advice to look for the smoker and they caused a tie when it was clear Maill would soothe one of the votes for himself). I don't know if their goal was to cause a tie or to protect Hero or to make Hero look suspicious. If Maill is spiked, it would be a bit odd for them to endanger him, but they knew he would be soothing someone who was not smoked, so unless a new emotional allomancer showed up, he would be safe. A tie was beneficial to the Spiked because it means only they have a say in who dies. It gives them time to kill off the confirmed players without narrowing down who is spiked.

As a soother, Maill is a great asset if he is good (unless his vote manipulation is negated by a smoker). However, if we don't know his alignment, he is a liability. If we lynch wrong this cycle, next cycle we will be at (possibly) 6-4. If they have two soothers at that time, they will be able to force a tie (assuming none of them are inactive). So if Maill is spiked and we don't lynch him, we might be at the point where it is impossible to win. However, if Maill is good and we lynch him, we still have one more cycle as long as everyone who appears to be somewhat active votes.

I do think Maill is suspicious. Catching eliminators in lies is a useful way to find them, and many things Maill has said have been fishy. Also, he was instrumental in the death of our seeker. (Revealing him to the thread allowed the spiked to kill him without worrying about making someone look suspicious for knowing about him beforehand. It also made it possible that Hael might be lynched instead of having to risk the kill being protected by a lurcher.) While I can see his point about knowing Hael was the seeker beforehand making him look less suspicious, I'm not convinced that means Maill is good. Whatever other reasons could be conjured up, Hael dying would have pointed right to Maill. Would Maill really be willing to sacrifice himself to get rid of a seeker, especially if they have a smoker? Especially if Maill though he could potentially manipulate Hael, and even more so one he heard about the lurcher? Maill himself said he would fight his death as a villager, even if it might be better for the village if he died. Wouldn't he do the same as a spiked? Also, the spiked had been doing a good job of killing verified players (Ada, Wyrm, and Kipper) so the trust group might not have seemed too dangerous for them yet.

I'm not really sure of anything right now. I'm a bit worried about how little opposition there is to the lynch on Maill. I'm also wondering why Elkanah and Mash both didn't vote. If Mash is trusting of Maill, why not vote for Hero? Why wouldn't Elkanah vote for either of his suspicions, either to increase discussion or to decrease the risk of emotional allomancy changing the vote?

I'll put my vote on Maill for now. This late in the cycle, it is unlikely to change. I wouldn't be opposed to changing if there were enough people on a different reasonable target. But whatever happens, it is important to make sure someone has at least three more votes than anyone else. There is evidence for two soothers, and both soothed votes off Maill on Day 6, so they could work together again.

Also, what exactly is the case against Hero? I feel like I've missed everyone's reasons for suspecting him. (Maybe I just haven't read closely enough.)

Current vote tally
Maill (6): Hero, Elbereth, Sart, Mark, Ripple, Lu
Hero (2): Maill, Orlok

Hey, Meta/Spiked, can I be made into an honorary Spiked when I die? I've got 0 influence in the village and I feel like the Spiked are more accepting.

Night 9: Cobblering Time

Maill felt like he was already a veteran at this ever since he saw the writing in the snow that first night. He felt like he had already been through this a couple of times before and now, it would all pay off. It was a strange feeling for a cobbler. It was akin to the skinny bookworm kid suddenly deciding to be a Spartan warrior.

But Maill wasn’t one to shy away from destiny, so he got to work right away. He started laying traps for the Spiked and he began cataloging people’s whereabouts. He kept his eyes peeled for clues at every death and he recorded minute details in the village debates.

His eyes shone with an intensity and focus that hadn’t been there before. Never again, he’d say to himself before wondering where that thought had come from. It didn’t change the fact that he found it appropriate though.

The transformation in Maill was obvious to anyone that had known him. He’d always been a very fun and lighthearted man who could talk your ear off while he took your measurements for a new pair of boots. That man was still there in many ways, but it had been tempered with this new drive. It wasn’t long before people started to wonder about the reason for this change and some began to suspect him of being in league with the Spiked, if he wasn’t one himself!

With each passing death, Maill’s determination grew and the villager’s suspicions of him grew parallel to it. It was a race to see which would give first.

Edrab’s death the night before was the straw that broke the camel’s back. While the rest of the villagers were distraught at finding the author lying dead on the floor of his home, Maill saw something else in the prone figure. He felt it all slipping away from him. He had been determined to protect the people of Tyrian Falls. He was so sure that he would be able to find the Spiked (his brain kept adding “this time” to the end of the thought even if he didn’t know why). In Edrab’s death, Maill felt the chill of hopelessness creep over him. He saw, as if in a vision, the Koloss rampaging through the streets while the Spiked celebrated in macabre fashion.

No, he told himself. He wouldn’t let it. There was still time! Without saying a word, Maill left. He returned to his shop, where he kept his notes and his musings and all of the rest of the clues he had picked up. He wouldn’t give up.

The rest of the villagers had seen Maill’s reaction and had misinterpreted it as uncaring. Between that and their rising suspicions of him, the rumors began circulating. By the end of the day, they had convinced themselves that the Cobbler was the coldhearted mastermind behind all their woes and the torches and the pitchforks were picked back up for another round of mob justice.

Maill was just starting to put the pieces together when they burst into his shop. He felt like he had found a corner piece in a puzzle and that everything was starting to fall into place.

“No!” He shouted at them as they rushed him. “What do you think you’re doing! Unhand me! You don’t get it, I’m supposed to save you fools this time!”

Maill struggled and fought the entire way, unwilling to give in.

As they pulled the noose tight around his neck, just before they pulled the lever to drop him, Maill scanned the crowd. He hoped to find one last hint of salvation out there. Instead, he found one person hiding in the mob smirking at him. He started to turn, to let the rest of the village know when the floor fell away from him.

Night 9 begins! You have 24 hours until the end of the turn.

The hunter does not pity. It was one of the first rules Slart had learned as a child. The hunter does not pity his prey. Though the deer may have been beautiful, to a hunter, it was food for the village, life for another day. He felt pity now. Maill had been too talkative for his own good. He had wrapped himself in a web of lies and contradictions. He made his bed, now he had to lie in it. During the day, Slart had pointed out so many of the man's contradictions. It was a rush, like the thrill of the hunt. But that wasn't like him. He wasn't a wild animal, chasing after his prey like a wolf. No, he was normally more patient than that. But he had hunted anyway, and his prey was being dragged off.

He considered just shooting the cobbler to give him a quick death. He started to knock an arrow, but he stopped before halfway. He pitied the cobbler. He had been the most active of them. Yelling and cajoling the town to be more vigilant. Where had that gotten him? Nowhere. Slart smilled bitterly. He knew he was probably being Soothed. The rage and passion he felt this morning were gone. He could stop it if he wanted to. He could put up his cloud and feel those emotions again. He chose not to. Maill was a Soother; he couldn't riot emotions that weren't there. Slart knew that his pity was real. He turned his back as the mob dragged the cobbler off. He didn't want to see what happened next.

The town was quiet. There were no exuberant cries from the townsfolk. He knew what that meant. It meant that they had failed again. They had lynched another innocent Villager. The Koloss would come soon. It was only a matter of time before they invaded the village. With so few able-bodied men, the town didn't stand a chance against them. The Spiked would kill them all. For now, the air was silent.

Slart started to laughing uncontrollably. He had always loved the silence. The town had always been too loud. Just once, he wanted them to shut up, to listen to the tranquility of the land. So why was he crying now? His wish had finally come true. The town was deathly quiet. There was finally peace throughout the village. And what did he have to pay for it? Just the blood of eleven innocent men. They had been friends once, even a family to him. Now they were all gone. He laughed a final time, as he wiped the tears from his face. He had made his bed, now he had to lie in it. The hunter cannot pity. As he laid in bed, he waited for the silence to overtake him. Soon enough, the town would be loud again, the debates would start again, as the Koloss drew ever nearer. He wondered if the town would ever be this quiet again. He hoped not. He didn't want there to be this deathly silence. He wanted there to be children playing, women singing, people talking. He wanted the town to become a raucous market-place filled with a thousand different sounds. He wanted the cobbler to still be making shoes in his shops. He wanted the apothecary still making strange elixirs. He wanted everything to go back the way it was. But it couldn't. The cobbler would still be dead. The apothecary would not be making any metal vials. Nothing could go back the way it was. All that was left was the silence. And for the first time in Slart's life, he hated it.

So let's see here. If Maill wasn't a smoker then that means someone else smoked him. Did we ever find out the identities of all of the smokers back when Kas was trying to get us to examine them and figure out which one(s) might be an eliminator?

Edit: I just read Sart's RP (I skipped over it earlier). So Sart are you claiming to be a smoker?

Maill was the person who had claimed smoker to me and Kas at the beginning. I'm not sure how much that helps with figuring out who the remaining ones are, but its all the information I have on smokers. Maybe he was PMing a smoker. Use it as you wish.

Yeah, I'm a Smoker. Back when a bunch of people were claiming to be Smoker, I decided to lay low, in case a late role reveal would kill me. I was only smoking myself at night, in case of Vote Manipulation. After the Seeker was revealed, I decided not to Smoke, since I didn't want to draw an incredible amount of suspicion on myself. As you can tell from the vote tally, my vote was Soothed off of Mailliw. I decided to reveal now for 3 reasons. One, it fit well with in the RP. Two, it doesn't harm me anymore. Would a Spiked really take the risk to not smoke himself? I suppose they knew they were killing the Seeker, but they couldn't be sure he wouldn't be Lurched. If they got scanned, it would be game over for them. And finally, there was one other person claiming Smoker that was never revealed to the thread, since I'm not the Spiked Smoker, I'd like to know who that other person is, and see if his actions make sense. EDIT: Apparently, it was Maill... Seriously? His mind games continue to live on.

One other thing strikes me as suspicious. On Day 1, a Soother took STINK's vote off of Jain. I didn't make much of it at the time, but I find it odd now. We know of at least two soothers. One, of course, was Mailliw. However, wouldn't he have stated that to the thread? It was something that could have soft-confirmed him! Stranger things have happened, but it would be odd. However, the only other Soother we have is most likely Spiked, since they soothed a vote off of a confirmed Player. That's just speculation though. They could have been trying to kill Maill, and accidentally targeted a confirmed player. Again, stranger things have happened. Under the assumption that the Spiked player soothed a vote off of Jain, I have to ask why. He was leading in the votes, so if he was innocent, the Spiked shouldn't have taken a vote off of him. Therefore, I'm beginning to suspect Jain of being a Spiked. Unfortunately, we know he is a Thug, so he isn't the Spiked Soother or Smoker, but at least it is a lead.

@Sart
You left your copperloud on to prevent vote manipulation… when you didn’t even vote or didn’t vote until the end of the day when no one would want to manipulate your vote anyway… and when it was possible you could be scanned. And then you turned it off to not look suspicious… when the seeker died and we are at the point when the village needs to prevent spiked emotional allomancy…. You didn’t tell us until it was possible a soother could have “wasted” their time checking you for a coppercloud (what would you have said if Maill had tried to soothe you instead of Ripple day 7?) ... but you did tell us so now the spiked soother knows not to bother soothing you… because you figured revealing being a smoker makes you not look suspicious. Okay.

I don’t see any evidence here that you aren’t the one who smoked Maill.

As for Jain, for various reasons I think he is slightly more likely to be spiked than the other inactives. However, since he is inactive there isn’t much point in killing him yet, or much information to learn about or from him. It would be more useful to look more closely at active players until there is evidence for only inactive spiked left. (Anyway, the spiked could have soothed a vote off him to make him look more suspicious or to make a tie more likely, not just to protect him when that wouldn’t be enough to save him alone.)

@Sart, your whole post says spiked to me.

Hmm. I seem to remember him claiming soother on three occasions in the thread.

You said it best yourself. If you were going kill him anyway, you might not smoke and have the spiked soother soothe your vote to protect you. You were under absolutely no threat of being scanned.

Well, that was prophetic. You are the only living smoker that we know of and someone clouded Maill to hide his allomancy from Hael. You revealed your role very late and it might just kill you.

For now you are at the top of my list; however, depending on how much emotional allomancy the spiked have we may have to all agree to lynch one target. If it's just a soother and a smoker, we might be okay. We'll need a lot of votes on whoever we decide to lynch tomorrow.

You're misunderstanding my point here. I'm saying that Mailliw never claimed to save Jain on Day 1. That would soft confirm him, not just the fact he was a Soother, but that he accidentally caused an Eliminator's death.

You said it best yourself. If you were going kill him anyway, you might not smoke and have the spiked soother soothe your vote to protect you. You were under absolutely no threat of being scanned.

As I stated in my RP, I believe Mailliw was the one who Soothed me. Whenever he was defending himself, he would take a vote off of him, so I see no reason he wouldn't do that now. Of course, there's a possibility that both Soothers hit me, but that's a 1 in 6 chance, and that's even if the Spiked even Soothed someone. Like I said before, there was no way of knowing the Spiked kill would go through, so there was definite danger of scanning. What you're suggesting would be a gamble that the spiked don't need to do. We have enough suspects that they can get us to lynch.

Well, that was prophetic. You are the only living smoker that we know of and someone clouded Maill to hide his allomancy from Hael. You revealed your role very late and it might just kill you.

I'm in complete agreement that the Spiked have Smoker. However, why the heck would their Smoker reveal themselves to the thread. That automatically paints a target on their back. I only revealed because it helped my RP. I had hoped it would put pressure on the other revealed Smoker to come forward, but that was another one of Maill's mind games. It's definitely provoked discussion, which is always a good thing. However, it does not make me Spiked. Why would a Spiked want to claim Smoker? It would be better if they could say, "Hey look Maill soothed me, so I'm not a Smoker in the first place."

The gambit you're saying the Spiked did is too risky. I admit this makes me look suspicious, but look at it from another angle. If I didn't reveal, what would have happened? Absolutely nothing. I would look less suspicious than I am now. Why would a Spiked deliberately increase suspicion on himself? He wouldn't.

Day 9: Infinite Lives

The ash fell lightly on the stained glass windows of the cathedral.  Sunlight streamed through illuminating the choir singing softly below.  In front of a large gathering lay Vron, his body wrapped in silken ribbons, atop a marble altar.

A figure decked in golden robes stood at the head of the altar and laid his hand on Vrons forehead.

"Your work is not yet done my disciple.  Arise and continue to carry out my bidding."

Vron still couldn’t tell if it had all been a fever dream or if it had really happened. Had he really been dead? Did they really being him back to life?

He didn’t feel any different. There wasn’t the slight tingle of magic coursing through him or any twinges of deja vu or anything of the sort that he figured would be indications that he had been brought back. Instead, things were pretty much perfectly normal.

Well, as normal as things could be in a village run amok with terrorists.

That, of course, was definitely cause for concern and Vron had taken the precaution of hiring someone that claimed to be a lurcher to guard him and his lab. He did find it strange that, for a lurcher, the man never asked for any supplies of iron, but after so much of the town was being turned into ruins, Vron wasn’t going to complain too much. The man seemed to be doing his job considering that his place had yet to be hit by the Spiked.

Vron had retired early after finding out that Maill had, indeed, not been one of the Spiked. He needed time to think. He started up a few new experiments, as the process of mixing and combining ingredients helped him clear his mind.

It didn’t work this time. Every time he started to get distracted with the work and started to relax, he kept seeing the stained glass windows of that temple from his vision. Each time, the sun shone through the glass from a different angle.

Was it somehow important? Was his mind trying to tell him something through some complex analogy? Or was he simply going mad?

As he made his way across his lab, he stepped on a squeaky floorboard. For some reason he paused and looked down. There was a note on the floor right next to his foot.

He didn’t reach down to pick up the note. Instead, he Instinctively threw himself to the side, just as a hatchet that had been suspended from the rafters unlatched and swung down towards him like a pendulum. If he had stayed where he had been, he would’ve likely been split in two.

How did he know about the hatchet? How did he know to dodge? How did he know, without having read it, that the note would only tell him that the Spiked had left the note there just to get him to stand still long enough for the hatchet to kill him?

And yet, there was still no sense of deja vu or anything to help explain the situation. The important thing was that he was still alive. Of course, the trap meant that the Spiked had been able to get inside his lab to set it up. He’d have to have a word with his “lurcher” about this.

He picked himself up and brushed himself off before going to the door of his lab. He didn’t let his bodyguard into the lab itself, but he had had a small shack built just outside his front door for the man to use to keep warm.

As Vron opened his front door, the first thing he noticed was the snow. A storm had evidently blown in during the evening and everything was a swirling of snow, ash, and mist. The next thing he noticed that his bodyguard was gone. The shack was empty.

Before he could do more than process this information, there was the twang of a crossbow string snapping and the bolt sailed through the storm to embed itself in Vron’s throat….

In a temple that was both far away from Tyrian Falls, but also very, very close, Vron’s “bodyguard” stood with the High Priest.

“Bring him back again,” the man said as he handed over a large sack that was bulging with whatever was inside. “He may not be the one I need to find, but perhaps his torment will draw the others. Bring him back and keep bringing him back into this same situation.”

The High Priest didn’t say a word. He just bowed low, almost reverently, as the man walked away.

Day 9 begins! You have 48 hours until the end of the cycle. And now we’re all caught up too! Yay!

Vron was a Regular Villager.

I'm going to suggest something radical, since at this rate, we're going to lose the game. I propose a role call. We know there has to be a Spiked Smoker (which isn't me). There is also strong evidence that there is a Spiked Soother as well. If we reveal our roles, we have a much better chance of narrowing down our suspects. Since they are verified, we can exclude Luckat and Orlok from this reveal.

As you already know by now, I am a Smoker. This is inevitably going to bring suspicion on me but if you vote for me, the village will be doomed. I'm going to cast a vote for Elkanah. His attack against me was suspicious to begin with. However, he also advocated forming a bandwagon. The only time a bandwagon is good is when the Village has a very strong suspect (like Maill). When there is a suspect, the Eliminators may be forced to sacrifice their own in order to remain undetected. However, we don't have a strong suspect right now. Thus a bandwagon is not advisable, as that will be driven by the Eliminators. Please tell the thread your role. I don't think any more secrets are helping our cause.

Posted (edited)

Well I have to say that I'm torn about Sart. On one hand, the fact that he's a Smoker DOES make him suspicious, because its very likely that the spiked do have a Smoker, and his "role claim" in his RP was subtle enough that it might have been a slip. Or he's trolling us.

On the other hand, he did make a convincing defense as to why he felt it worthwhile to tell us his role, and why the eliminators would have no (good) reason to do that.

However, having everyone announce their roles at this point in the game would all but literally be handing victory to the Spiked. Terrible terrible idea. It wouldn't help the village at all, because:

  • Meta's role distributions are notoriously hard to guess
  • The eliminators are going to lie about their roles. Or they won't. But we have no way of knowing, so we can't learn anything from what they claim.
  • And lastly, we have a half dozen or so players who are inactive enough that we're not going to get a response out of them.
So any roles claimed are not going to help us find any eliminators. However it will help the eliminators prioritize targets and eliminate the biggest threats to them. So sorry, Sart, I gotta vote for you for now. Edited by Herowannabe
Posted

Well, I think it could be helpful. Not because of role distributions, but because at least some roles can be proven, eliminating them from the "maybe Spiked Smoker/Soother", though that doesn't necessarily mean they're not Spiked. Unfortunately, my role can't be proven, given that I'm a Regular Villager. So I'll have to stay on that list, at least.

Sart, you might want to put Weiry into your full inactive list. He explicitly said he wouldn't be coming back to the game.

I think I trust Sart for now. I kind of want to lynch Hero, but I also feel like lynching a semi-inactive might help, because there's almost certainly a Spiked there. Unfortunately, I don't know how helpful lynching a semi-active would actually be, and I don't really have any suspicions of my own, so for the moment I'll follow Maill's dying wish and vote Hero. I'm planning on at least a partial reread tonight, though, so I may retract that if anyone else seems more suspicious.

Another thought that occurred to me: What if the Spiked don't have a Smoker? What if they only have a Mistborn who got incredibly lucky and drew Copper the cycle Maill died? Unlikely, I'm aware, but we should keep it in mind as a possibility. After all, there was only one Seeker that we know of, and at this point another one is somewhat unlikely.

Well, this was going to come out at one point or another. Better late than never, right?

I'm another thug. Apart from jain I mean.

One last thing, I'm not sure we have a Mistborn. Can anyone confirm(personally or by proxy) that there is/ever was a Mistborn in the game? Meta's role distribution might have eliminated the Mistborn.
