"I... don't think we can run," Kaeni said, "or hide, for that matter. Unless someone wants to act as bait."

"How interested in killing us specifically is it? If one of us could lead it back to the thing we grounded earlier, would it stay and eat that instead of continuing to hunt us? We haven't made it angry yet."

“That’s all the way back down near the base of the mountain!” I’ikeq said. “We’ve been lucky so far with avoiding monsters — if we lose all our progress, we might not be as lucky the second time around.”

Necromancy is mostly just bodies, but can be used to manipulate passed spirits and souls in rare cases. This is considered completely taboo, and is exactly the sort of thing that the Reapers are fighting against.

"And we have to make it there before morning..." Kaeni brought out her bow. "And it already tried to kill you. I imagine it's very interested in killing us."

The day-night cycle in this realm is a lot longer than it is up in the Physical plane, for reference

"Is it? I've met a few acolytes who joined to keep their souls safe."

"Really? That seems like a silly reason to join."

"I agree," Avi said. "It seems to me like Death will want to have Reapers who serve for the sake of others, rather than themselves."

She stopped and looked at their path forward. "We're nearly at the third layer. It's going to get a lot harder from here..."

"I see." Avi understood Isek's point of view, even if she didn't share it.

Then again, protection from death would be nice, she thought to herself. I don't fear death. I just fear dying before I've accomplished what I want to.

What I need to.

Do we want to fight another monster, or wait till the Third Layer?

You know what? Monster here! We're ahead of the others and we haven't had a monster in a while.

Il'anque continued climbing. This cliff looked easy to climb, with plenty of amethyst jutting out from the rock face. It should be trivial to reach the third layer. But what was that glint that she saw out of the corner of her eye? It looked like something in the rock face had shifted. Probably just a trick of the light.

Il'anque was midway up the slope when one of the crystals moved.

“I don’t know if I’ll be of much use against it,” said I’ikeq.

“Didn’t Mercury just say she could ‘blast apart its skull in a blast of lightning’?”

Avi followed Il'anque up the amethyst-covered cliff. She thought she was making good progress.

Suddenly, one of the crystals shifted. A strange creature emerged, revealing the purple growth of gemstone to be an almost armor-like plating; It looked kind of like a mole, if moles had razor sharp claws that let them cling to stone and had a very vicious temperament.

Stars, Avi thought. I did not need this right now.

AAAHHH You're fighting a monster without me? I'm sorry I disappeared though

Ran'at heard the fighting from up ahead.

"What's happening? I was lost in thought for a second."

Then he saw the monster, and ran towards his friends to help.

"You got... anti-bug magic?"

"No, but I might be able to wedge something between some of the plates of its exoskeleton."

Is its exoskeleton divided into plates?
