Creating a term for Sanderson's Plot twists
Quiver replied to gjustice99's topic in General Brandon Discussion
Sand Attack? You know, as in Pokemon. Because... Sanderson? -
I'm not completely sure where I'm going with this, so sorry; this is partly a 'cry-for-help' thread, partly something I really need to get off my chest. If you guys have any advice... I'd appreciate that a lot. I've kind of been in a bit of a rut lately- for the last few years, if I'm being completely honest about it. I've wanted to write since I was a kid; I remember getting creative writing assignments and thinking that those were just the best ones. I'm not saying I was good at them - and looking back at it, a lot of what I did was flat out stolen from stuff I'd read that i was sure no one else had- but I still enjoyed it. I used to love just lying on the floor in my grandparents house, and scribbling whatever came to me. A lot of it was terrible, but still. I liked it. The problem is... well, lately, I want to write. I've been talking about writing; I have a few ideas- some original ones and, yes, some fan fiction- which I think are really good. But whenever I load up a page, I find it hard to get started; I stop and I stall, and I end up not doing anything. Everything just sounds really awkward, and rote, and dumb. A lot of the time I end up just making stuff up as I go along, and if I do get to write the big, emotional scenes that I pictured so clearly in my head... They just come off wrong, and not as good as I wanted them to be. And even when I do get writing done... it never seems quite right. For one thing, it's never long enough; I find myself struggling- really struggling- to write a few thousand words, even for an idea that I really like. Or if I do have something, and I post it as a chapter somewhere (like I have on this forum and one FiMFiction) I find it even harder to go and do a second chapter and continue it. Even when it's stuff that i do want to continue; I just find my attention wandering, or just completely stalling, struggling to think of anything to say. Which... is another part of the problem. The more I try to write, the more I get the feeling that I don't have anything to write about; even when I'm just trying to do a goofy, light-hearted adventure series, it sounds like... goofy light-hearted adventure. And completely throw-away, so why should someone spend their time reading it, when there is so much wrong with it. I guess what I'm sayin is... does anyone have any advice on... getting over these issues?

A time loop, told from the point of view of the characters who are trapped in the loop itself- think groundhog Day, from the Point of View of the town. So every chapter has a core group of characters who go about their daily lives, except for the one person who knows that there is a loop and acts accordingly. The result is a repeating epic, where the reader can see the mental breakdown that the main character (the Bill Murray) is going through, and experience all his weird antics from the point of view of the rest of the cast; like Bill quitting his job and being a chull to everyone who works there, or him doing absolutely insane antics (and commenting in the next chapter/"same day" about them). Or, if you want to get dark, a whole string of chapters where "Bill" decides "storm it" and starts being straight up murderous to his friends, because hey, they're going to come back the next loop anyway, so it's not like anyone is going to know, and he's been trapped here for so long and just needs to vent a little...

A majestic fox, hmm? Are you more majestic than a fox which has just been made Professor of Majestics at Oxford university, where he earnedca degree in majesty? (I love Blackadder) Anyway, welcome!

New member and already had my first epic fail!

Anyway, welcome! Yeah, Hoid is a recurring character; in fact, he's in all of Brandon's Cosmere books.Stormlight Archive is the first (published) work where's he's had a major role though; he's been intended as small cameo's in Brandon's other books, like an easter egg for the readers to find. -
Series you were disappointed with...

...So, who is Veronica Roth exactly? I mean... obviously, from what you guys say, she's not very good. And I've heard her name mentioned amongst the likes of Stephanie Meyer. But I have absolutely no idea who she is, or what she's written. Granted, I didn't find out about Twilight until long after Breaking Dawn was published... but I'm a little more genre-savey and socially aware these days, and I have no idea of what awful ideas she's added to culture on par with sparkling vampires. So... details, please? If no one minds. (...For the record, I should probably add that I would say there aren't really bad ideas, just good ideas executed badly. For instance, Twilight would make a fantastic horror novel, or story about a sociopath or stockholm syndrom.) -
damnation. And that is why you don't mess with, or torment, animals for your own amusement.

Yeah! The movie does kind of set it up, what with her refusing, and the lines about her being as much of a monster as Bruce... it would have been amazing if she had lifted it. And... Civil War Speculation below (which may count as spoilers, so don't say I didn't warn you).

Octavia is the Arrow. The poor picture quality is entirely due to the fact that it is hard to get good pictures of well-trained vigilantes, and not because I have the photoshop skills of a cutie mark crusader. Anyway... I liked the episode. Joe's right in that, maybe the quote seemed out of place... but I kind of took it as "Winter-which-we-haven't-carefully-crafted is coming"... which might have borne out a little more if the resulting winter seemed worse than a usual one which... didn't seem to be the case? Either way, I am happy to overlook it, because I loved Rainbow Dash in this episode; from her "grinch face", to the fact that this episode is basically about Tank dying... it wasn't the greatest episode ever, but it was enough that I'll overlook that wierd moment. Also, the "Clear Skies, Open Skies" part was just the best.

...Am I the only one who sort of wishes 'The Wife' was her username? Anyway... I don't actually think there is a lot of Cosmere fan fiction, period. The only thing I could recommend would be to check out Featherwriter's tumblr; she has quite a few cosmere fan fiction, of the romantic variety. The only thing I would warn about is that they are actually stories based on her favorite ship from the Stormlight Archive books. I don't actually know any Nalthis fan fiction, which... is a shame. Warbreaker is my favorite book, and I'd like to see more stories set in that world; I'm not really one for romantic plots, but frankly, Siri and Susebron are probably my favorite couple in the cosmere right now. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I liked it? Yeah. I liked it; it was a fun movie, and I'm probably going to see it again. I don't think it was as strong as the first movie- partly because there wasn't any buildup throughout Phase Two for this, partly because it's pacing is different- but I liked the movie. Oddly enough, I think the only films you need to see for it are Iron Man 3 and (maybe) The Winter Soldier; the latetr explains why they don't have SHIELD backing (since Strucker can be explained as random terrorist group), but Tony's monologue at the end of IM3 explains Ultron's intentions so perfectly. After all, Tony explains about wanting "a suit of armor around the world", following his announcement in 3 that "It's not armor, it's a cocoon"; Tony went into the Iron Man armor a selfish human being, and came out a hero. It kind of explains why Ultron is obsessed with trying to "evolve" humanity, if he is tking Tony's metaphorical interpretation as literal and applying it to the planet. Anyway, Ultron was... alright. Not like the comics, but I kind of accepted that when I realised he had a mouth that actually moved. He really was a dark version of Tony, and in that regards, Spader played him very well. Also...

That face. How do you make it?

I suspect she hasn't watched the show; Twilight strikes me as the type of pony who would have read Maretin's books first.

Having a Bad Day? Stop here for a Good Rant!

Ya know what? I thought about it. And this costume is great. When you think about it, it works very effectively... As a costume for the Jokerz. If you don't know, the Jokerz were a criminal gang from the Batman Beyond cartoon; a gang of youths who modelled themselves after the original Joker. This look would work really well for one of them; an over the top punk, inspired by the Joker and showing his allegiance in an over the top way. It even works as an original villain, creating an identity for himself through body modification and painting on his bleached-body canvas. But neither of those takes work with the Joker. They aren't dignified enough to work as the 'iconic look' of a villain like the Joker. Honestly, this reminds me of All Star Batman and Robins Joker. I would not be surprised if he had a dragon tattoo on his back like that incarnation had. -

...what. I... I'm sorry, I'm going to need some time to process this... On the plus side, whoever wrote Damaged on his forehead has excellent penmanship. -
The Bands of Mourning is what locals call Elendels marching band. The trilogy has been a Machiavellian ploy to put Wax in a position to put the tuba lessons his uncle paid for to use. ...though I like the idea of TLR storing his identity. It would be neat if it was true. Do we know what a charged metalmind would do if it was turned into a spike, though?

Alloy of Law era Mistborn rp [Planning+Characters]
Quiver replied to Kestrel's topic in Inactive RPs
Dangnabit. Kinda got an idea for a character in mind, so I might join. Maybe. I dunno; I wouldn't be particularly active if I did. I'll get back to you on it. -
Hey, it sounds like an Epic-led dystopia to me. Congratulations on the job though. Wherever it may be lol.

I haven't seen the new season yet- I was planning on getting caught up on the show, but I might just skip ahead to this season and fill in the blanks later, but...

damnation justice. You're old school. (I will add that the reason I didn't mention Feather as a well known member when I mentioned her rep is because I haven't really seen her name on the online list lately. While her Renarin love is probably common enough knowledge, I don't know how much new members would know her. Which is a shame, because she is/was awesome, but still, you get my point.)

The Good News Thread: I'm So Excited! And I Just Can't Hide It!
Quiver replied to traceria's topic in General Discussion
...Sympathies? Because damnation, that is... pretty chullish behavior. I think this guy is a real life Diamond Tiara. Uh... random good news? I saw a midnight showing of Avengers: Age of Ultron. So that was pretty cool; doubly so since I was attending it with an old friend of mine. I'm exhausted now though.
