The Shaod = Snapping = Giving Breath = Acting with Honor
Windrunner replied to ROSHtafARian's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I really don't think Surgebinding is some Cultivation Honor mix. I don't even think they can "throw their lots in together". If you check my sig, it has a link to my Shard-Complements Theory, which describes why Honor and Cultivation wouldn't be able to form a balance magic. But it's all my opinion there. If you don't want to bother, or if you've already read it, I'll just say that it is my belief that Honor and Cultivation aren't complements, and so balance magic would be impossible. I think it explains nicely why there aren't 7 magic systems going on. Honor, Cutivation, and Odium are all non-complementary so they only have their own systems. It makes things neater in my opinion. Hard facts though also point to the idea that Surgebinding is Honor's magic. Brandon has said that the Shard's intent is how you access a magic system. With Surgebinding, it is accessed through speaking Oaths promising to do honorable things. In my opinion, spren are initially drawn to someone's defining characteristics, but will not form a stronger bond until that person starts acting in accordance with your characteristics. Shallan said she had never told a lie, until the events of the books, so it seems that truth was pretty important to her. It's also possible that spren come when you have trouble and doubts following your defining characteristics, and soldier on is what strengthens the bond. This is all speculation though. However, what has gained Shallan this spren, which I assume is tied to her Surgebinding abilities, is telling the truth. In my opinion, telling the truth is an honorable trait, thus Shallan has acted in accordance with Honor, has received Surgebinding as a result, so it seems to me that Surgebinding is just of Honor, no need for Cultivation to be involved at all. It makes sense logically to me, but everyone is free to have their own opinion. On Honor as Odiums opposite. I'm pretty certain that Brandon has said that Ruin and Preservation are unique in being perfect opposites. I know that one definition of Odium is dishonor, but another is hatred, and that's how I prefer to think of it. It's just a matter of interpretation. My prediction is that Honor and Odium will end up not being opposites, or even complements. This is because, according to my other beliefs, this would form a balance magic, which doesn't fit at all with Brandon's statement of 30 small or 3 big magic systems. I think it's simpler and more elegant with each Shard having their own big magic system that can then be subdivided into ten distinct powers, making 30. About Cultivation's magic. I have two ideas there. One is that the people in Shinovar use it. It's one of the best places for farming, or "Cultivation" in the world, and farmers are treated like holy men. If they had access to a magic power, that would surely increase the people's reverence of them. A problem with this is that Shinovar isn't the only place people can farm. Why haven't other farmers discovered this system? It could be extremely complex though. My other idea is different, though it could fit with the farmers having magic. It seems that every race on Roshar has some odd characteristics. Golden hair of the people of Iri, the strange shadow and shape-shifting abilities of Aiman, and the weird Thaylenth eyebrows. This could be a way to add color to the world, but it could also be related to magic. Perhaps each nation was given a kind of magic by Cultivation, tied to their strange characteristics. We know that the hair color being bred true isn't even possible, it could be tied to sDNA. The powers aren't obvios but perhaps these attributes Cultivate them somehow? It's a weak connection but whatever the racial magic of the Shin is, could be the reason farmers are revered. This is kind of a shot in the dark though. -
The Movement of Metallic Compounds in Allomancy
Windrunner replied to Odium's_Shard's topic in Cosmere Discussion
By primary I mean basic default no special knowledge required. I mean sure you could use it for other things, but Brandon says he doesn't think that anyone knows how to actually do those things. It seems a stretch that lerasium's default setting wouldn't be it's primary function. Here's a quote to support that lerasium's primary function is a connection to Preservation. Since the mists are Preservation, then it seems Lerasium does connect it to Preservation. In my opinion, I think too much is being read into lerasium's other possibilities. You could hotwire it to power other processes, but that's not what it does. I could also be totally wrong though. Sorry, I think I phrased that poorly. I mean that duralumin works kind of like electricity. You send too much power through a wire, you get more in the moment, less overall, because your connection to power, the wire, is fried. Duralumin works the same way allowing you to channel more power through metal, at the cost of the metal. More power in the short term, less overall. So basically the same thing you were saying. -
So, I'm going to preface here by saying that the basis of this idea here is not my own. Everything here hinges on the idea that Trellism is a religion from the people from the Southern Hemisphere, something that someone else suggested, though I cannot remember who. If it was you, give me a shout out and a link to your post, and I'll properly credit you. Anyway, Brandon has said this about the people from the Southern Hemisphere: So this made me think, what happens when a Ferring or Misting is born on this other side of the planet. In the times before Rashek's Ascension, both Allomancy and Feruchemy were relatively unknown. So lets say in the widespread destruction of the Ascension, the survivors in the south had a substantial amount of Trelagalists. In the centuries that follow, there are people born, people with powers that you have never seen or heard of before. Allomancy and Feruchemy would appear miraculous to anyone who saw their power. And what does a religious group do when some strange miraculous happenings occur? They attribute it to the supernatural, Trell has obviously blessed these men. Over time the religion would slowly adapt, and eventually come to be called Trellism. I cannot explain why Miles found references to it in the Words of Founding. Perhaps it sprang up near the end as the first Allomancers were being discovered, a new sect that Keepers recorded. It would have been a minor one that Sazed probably wouldn't have mentioned ever, especially not to Vin, who was so uncomfortable with being holy to one religion let alone two. Sazed would have included it in the comprehensive Words of Founding though. It seems that the Southerners are somehow interacting with the people of Elendel. (Evidence: Red and Gold cigars) Anyway, either they convert Miles or he becomes curious and reaserces it. Maybe Sazed saw it after he Ascendeded it and added it to his knowledge and the Words of Founding. No matter how this religion ended up in the Words of Founding, in my mind this is very good evidence that the people from the South are responsible for making Miles believe that Allomancers are divine. What does everyone else think?

The Movement of Metallic Compounds in Allomancy
Windrunner replied to Odium's_Shard's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Okay, I have just a couple comments/questions I don't think that duralumin works this way. I can't see matter being converted to energy here, which I believe is what E=MC2 is all about. I think it probably just increases your connection to Preservation temporarily, allowing more power to be transmitted through the metal, at the cost of it being all expended. If you're goin E=MC2 here, I believe that would be a nuclear reaction going on here, which would probably kill the Allomancer. I'm pretty sure Brandon has explicitly stated that Lerasium's primary affect is to increase the burner's connection to Preservation. An increased connection grants you Allomantic abilities. Sure there's other mysterious stuff you could do, but it's primary function is pretty simple. Have you seen a quote that I've missed that says otherwise? -
So are you saying that each of the Heralds holds a Splinter, and that their individual Orders are the magic-users of that Splinter's system? Because these hypothetical Splinters have to be of Honor, because the way to access their power is through "Honoring" oaths. If these Splinters weren't related to Honor then the Radiants wouldn't have to be honorable. If this is not what you were saying, where did I misinterpret your thoughts? Do we know that Honor hasn't been Splintered? From what we've seen with spren and all it seems likely to me, and haven't seen a quote saying otherwise. Either way, I don't think there were Splinters that are unrelated to any of the Shards, 16 is fundamental to the cosmere so saying, "There were 16 big pieces and then a whole bunch of random smaller pieces that don't fit with the others" seems inelegant. If so then all these Splinters would need their own unique intent, separate from the intents of the others. My main problem with it is the messiness it would create, with all sorts of random intents flying around. As always I could be totally off-base here, but Brandon's systems have always seem very orderly to me, and introducing random splinters throws everything into chaos. Also, I think the reason Brandon doesn't like the word Shardholder is because he thinks people will mix it with Shardbearer. Also it seems he doesn't separate the Shard from it's holder as much as we do, they become the Shard, so to speak, so they don't need a different title. I like the new perspectives though, and I'm interested to hear your responses.

Background on brandonsanderson.com
Windrunner replied to discipleofhoid's topic in Cosmere Discussion
There was a topic on this a long time ago. I don't think they managed to figure anything out though. Here's the link if you want to check it out. -
Windrunners were really what caught my imagination, straight away in TWoK from the minute we saw Szeth. And I cannot believe I forgot Hoid. Fail... Also we don't now if Brandon intends on making the cosmere connection more overt. He's mentioned making some books where worlds collide, but he isn't sure if he would publish them, because he doesn't want other new readers to have to read 36+ other books to understand whats going on. He says if these conflux books do happen he might just post them on his site. I personally hope they would be published as real books, everyday more people discover that Brandon's books are connected, so maybe by the time he's ready to write conflux books, it won't be such a big deal.

About Shard's intelligence without a holder, here's the quote for anyone interested. I am really excited for this! From the tidbits you've mentioned, it's going to be excellent.
-
Sorry, somehow I backspaced half the quote, I'll edit my post, but here it is in it's entirety. So it's implied that spikes can be used to kill multiple people to increase their charge.
-
It's nice to be useful, considering TWoK introduced me to the comsere, I should know a lot about it. My brain is jammed full of crazy random cosmere knowledge, and sometimes I feel like the Brandonothology is imprinted inside my skull. And being a Windrunner rocks! I'll have to show off my Stormsurfing abilities sometime. Let me know when the next highstorm is. I was actually thinking about this the other day. I find it hilarious that most of the cosmere stuff we know comes from interviews and the like. I mean Shard is mentioned once, Andonalsium and cosmere twice. Other then that there isn't a whole lot that makes the books obviously connected.
-
Spikes do have a maximum charge, but they can be repeatedly charged from different people As for Scadrialeese domination of the cosmere, I'd say it's possible but I don't think Harmony would let it happen. He could easily justify directly using his power to stop them if he so chose, Ruining some of his own people to Preserve the people of the other worlds. Or he could get the Faceless Immortals in there, putting people who are less violent and aggressive in charge, like TenSoon did for Wax. Mass Hemalurgy is frightening, but it is possible, especially considering the people in the Southern Hemisphere might still know how to do it. Hemalurgy was actually best known of the Metallic Arts before Rashek's Ascension, so the knowledge might have stayed with them, whereas it died out under the Lord Ruler's reign. Another thing to remember is that the farther we go into the future, the more the Allomantic and Feruchemical genes diffuse. A large portion of the population could end up having powers. However, I think that Hemalurgy might not be extremely threatening. Barring some Allomantic Holocaust where metalborn are slaughtered for spikes, I think it's pretty unlikely that this is going to be legal.

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Windrunner replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Does he get another one? He already has at least one scar on his head by the beginning of Hero of Ages. -
Could Szeth be stopped or captured? We know that Dalinar will be defended by Adolin, one of the best duelists in the world who also has Shardplate, Kaladin who has the same power set as Szeth and may be potentially stronger then him, as well as Kaladin's crack bridge team guard. If Kaladin gets the Basic Lashing figured out by the time Szeth attacks I think they have a real chance of winning. Kaladin at least also understands how Szeth's powers work, and knows to try to deprive him of Stormlight, something none of Szeth's other targets knew about. If they can stall long enough for Szeth to run out of Stormlight they may have a chance of capturing him. Also, is it possible that if Szeth feels that he will be throwing his life away by attacking, that he will feel honor-bound not to? I guess it really depends. We know he hasn't been able to be foolhardy in the past, but I'm not sure that he would be able to disobey his primary orders in favor of his safety. Whatever happens, I think we can expect it to occur near the beginning, as we know that Szeth and Shallan and Jasnah are all departing for the Shattered Plains at the same time, and at Jasnah and Shallan will be at or near their destination at the opening of Stormlight 2. Edit: I just realized Reader made the same point about Adolin as I did, and Kurkistan is right, it depends if Adolin is ready to go or not. Kaladin could potentially buy Adolin some time to get his Plate on. Good news is it isn't difficult for Adolin to summon his Blade even if it is unwieldy.

Words to live by...

A fanfic would contain characters, magic, plot elements, and/or setting from the work of another, most likely published author. You would write in their world, so to speak. An example would be if I started writing about Vin's adventures between Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages. An original work of fiction would contain all the things I mention above (plot, setting etc.) except they would all be an original work by you, and not contain any elements borrowed from other authors.

I don't think that having different sDNA means that they have to have different origins from the rest of Scadrial's people, although it is possible. What if Preservation waited in the early days for one group to distinguish itself, and when the Terrismen did, he gave them Feruchemy so they worshiped him. Or perhaps it was the other way, and the Terrismen worshiped Preservation so he gave them Feruchemy. They actually seem as if they were kind of his chosen people. Another, less likely possibilty, is that in the very early days anyone could be born a Feruchemist. Once the people figured out that Feruchemy was genetic, then they could have started breeding with each other, like nobility almost, and they eventually created their own distinct population. I don't think this happened though, because then the Terrismen would have ruled, instead of being confined as herders in the north.
-
I personally doubt that ChayShan has any storage parts similar to Feruchemy in it. I know Brandon has parallels in his magic systems, but I wouldn't like it if all balance magics were storage, it would feel unoriginal. If I had to say that ChayShan parallels any cosmere powers we've seen so far I'd say Allomantic pewter. He becomes stronger and graceful, strong enough to shatter the super-tough Dakhor monk bones.

I can't find a quote where he says specifically that Travel is teleportation. It's more that he's mentioned the word Travel and we know that Radiants can teleport so I think we just put two and two together, because they made sense together. There may be a quote but I can't find it. Here you go Chaos, it's the only place I can find him mention it.
-
This is a tiny spoiler from pg. 830 of TWoK. Kaldin is having conversation with someone who knows about his powers. The reason stories contradict each other is because, as Reader says, Radiants belonged to different Orders, and had different abilities. They would control two different Surges and then also have access to another power (presumably a combination of the two) that was unique to their Order. If you didn't read the spoiler, I'll just say that mythology says that Radiants had control over Heat, Light (basically confirmed by Brandon to be similar to Lightweaving), and they also could manipulate some surge that allowed them to fly. This might be a more advanced Kaladin power but I doubt it.

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Windrunner replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Okay here's this quote by Sazed at his moment of Ascension: If Sazed had been unable to control Ruin and Preservation, would they have Splintered each other? A couple other atium questions Why can lerasium be burned by anyone in the cosmere, while atium is restricted to a small portion of the population of one planet? When Preservation replaced cadmium and bendalloy on the Allomantic Table, did that mean that no Mistborn who ingested that metal would be able to use those metals? Were there simply no Pulsers and Sliders born during that same time period, or were those Misting instead turned into atium and malatium mistings? Now that Sazed has returned the Allomantic Table to it's previous form, does that mean there are no longer atium and malatium mistings born? Edit: One more How did Demoux end up with a scar on his head? -
Today I was browsing the Elantris portal on Brandon's website. I had been checking out the Aonic linguistics section, because I wanted to make sure Brandon hadn't thrown out the letter v in Arelish, because I want my name to contain an Aon. (Here's hoping Aon Avi shows up in the sequel). Anyway I noticed the Brandon also had a glossary for all Elantris terms on his website. Elantris Glossary Had anyone seen this before? It's chocked full of terms and extra info on gyorns, Derethi and Korathi and a lot of other stuff. There are a few problems though. It appears that it's a little outdated. I noticed that it says that Seons only die when their masters are taken by the Shaod or they expend the Aon in their core. As far as I know Seons only die sometimes when their master is taken by the Shaod (Evidence: Ien) and I think Brandon has removed the power of Seons to use their Aon. This brings up the question of what we should do with it. Is it considered canon? I don't want to put incorrect stuff on the wiki, but there's a wealth of information here. What should I do? Also, is it possible that there could be just a general wiki questions topic pinned to the top of the thread? I feel stupid starting a new topic every time I have a question.

Hi khchick, good to have you aboard! I have to say that I am totally jealous of your job. It wold be incredible to be a videogame tester.

Hi glougee, it's good to have you here! Those Way of Kings drawings are seriously amazing! The symbols seem just about perfect to me, it's how I've always pictured them. I am totally jealous, I've tried my hand at fan art before and it hasn't gone well. Edit: Also I also totally thought someone here had joined the Fray.
-
Good to have you here Qazxvy, I hope you enjoy the forums here. Just out of curiosity, how did you choose your username?

I feel like such a slacker, but I promise that I haven't forgotten about this. I'm at about the halfway mark (30 minutes) but I have to go back now and add in all the parts I edited out. It will be completed, I promise. Thank you for the example in the OP, I really debated with myself about adding in words that Brandon had forgotten.
