Progress on Mistborn Movie, plus other things
Windrunner commented on Zas678's article in Brandon and Book News
Kharbranth is right on the coast, along the Tarat Sea. I'm sure they notice the tides there. Also sailors would need to understand how the tides work in order to sail effectively. -
The Emperor's Soul *Elantris Spoilers*
Windrunner replied to Windrunner's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
Well I doubt that this world in particular will be the setting for any other of the major ten. As I said above, the whole idea came after he gave us the number ten, which I don't believe he would have done unless he knew fairly well what he was going to be doing. He had refused to give us a number for a while. I understand what Brandon meant when he said ten core worlds and I agree with your interpretation. Core means having a major part in the overarching story, and within those ten, Stormlight, Mistborn, and Dragonsteel are the most important. I refuse to believe that not all the Shards will appear at some point within these ten worlds. Worlds having a Shard makes them important. If you follow my logic then this novella can't be a part of the core ten, yet will have some Shardic presence, there are two possibilities. There is a Splinter there, or a Shard will at some point be there, but will not always be on that world. I really don't see any other possibilities. I don't think there can be magic without a Shard, because it is actually an affect of a Shard interacting with a particular world. At least that's the way it's always been thus far, and will continue to be in my opinion. -
Theory on why Vin avioded Hoid *Minor spoilers for WoK*
Windrunner replied to Nesh's topic in Cosmere Discussion
It's very likely he knew about her spike, and perhaps that's even what he intended to inform her of here. However, he may have not known Vin's base Allomantic strength. Sazed thinks she took in some of the mists when she young which made her a stronger Allomancer then she was at birth. Hoid may not have known that, and was unable to take her increased power level into account. He also may have never had anyone sense his magic before, he might not have even realized it was possible. Also we know Hoid isn't infallible. He spent almost the whole time during WoA in the Terris mountains trying to find the Well. Rashek had him tricked too. As a matter of fact Vin figured it out first, Hoid never would have found it if he hadn't overheard Elend talking to Spook. The only way he managed to beat her there was through manipulating Shadesmar. Actually, the more I think about it, the more likely it seems to me that Hoid was Lightweaving when Elend met him, altering his own appearance. There's no way Hoid looked Terris enough on his own that Elend didn't notice. Hoid probably just took the place of one of the Terris leaders, perhaps one that was killed during the Inquisitor attack on Tathingdwen. He could have slipped in like a kandra, disposing of the real man's body and pretending that he had never been killed. Or maybe he had just taken control when the Synod fell, and people were looking for stability and a leader. Either way I think he was Lightweaving to hide his appearance. -
The Emperor's Soul *Elantris Spoilers*
Windrunner replied to Windrunner's topic in Elantris and Emperor's Soul
So, the fact that you can make Forgeries of items as divergent as stone and Souls has got me thinking. It really seems like the magic system of a full Shard. But I firmly believe we will see all the Shards in the core ten worlds. So I've got an idea. Maybe there is a Shard here currently, but it won't always be on this world, or it came from somewhere else. It could make an appearance in multiple books without being obvious. Especially since this is a novella. -
Theory on why Vin avioded Hoid *Minor spoilers for WoK*

Yes, I was just explaining why she was jumpy. That and mysterious, subconscious, bronze sense could have been enough to freak her out so she would leave. -
Theory on why Vin avioded Hoid *Minor spoilers for WoK*
Windrunner replied to Nesh's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Scadrial is one of the main three cosmere stories, along with The Way of Kings on Roshar and Dragonsteel on Yolen. The other Shardworlds are relatively unimportant to the overall story. That's why Hoid is focused on Scadrial, it's one of the more important worlds. In addition to this, Cett isn't even sure if Hoid and Slowswift are still loyal to him and he told Vin that. Plenty of reason for her to be cautious. -
Shouldn't this Liar of Partinel link be in the opening post? It's 93 pages long and goes further then the other one. Also I just wanted to let you guys know, if you didn't already, that the second Liar of Partinel link is broken. Edit: I just realized that the broken link is the same one that Mad Scientist posted. For some reason his link works and the one in the OP doesn't. And I just realized that discipleofhoid said the same thing. Sorry!

Theory on why Vin avioded Hoid *Minor spoilers for WoK*
Windrunner replied to Nesh's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well we don't know how he did it, but atium compounding is one of the most likely options right now. We know he is immortal, because there is an interim of 300 years between The Hero of Ages and Alloy of Law, which happens around the same time as The Way of Kings. The only known way on Scadrial to live beyond you're average lifespan is atium compounding. We also know that several Inquisitors had Feruchemical atium spikes, Marsh got one if fact. Sazed also has kept an eye on all the old Inquisitor spikes, making the Pathian earrings out of them. There are also no more mistborn or atium mistings on Scadrial. So is it really all that unlikely that Demoux got a hold of a spike and some atium? Sazed may have just gave him some, it wouldn't have to have been all that much. One bead can return you to childhood if used right. Demoux could have been chosen to protect Scadrial, after all, who better for Sazed to choose then one of his old crew mates? In short, it isn't proven or even inconceivable that Demoux is immortal some other way, it just seems that atium compounding is the easiest way for it to have happened. Does my logic make sense to you? -
Theory on why Vin avioded Hoid *Minor spoilers for WoK*
Windrunner replied to Nesh's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Well I probably shouldn't have said pulse, it may not sound the same. Perhaps different magics sound differently, like buzzing or pulsing and other things. What we're saying is that Hoid was giving off Investiture pulses but Vin didn't have any of that special training. With her enhanced bronze she was barely able to sense it, but it was so subtle and different, she didn't know what was throwing her off. Marsh is busy on Scadrial, he goes his own way. No guarantee he agrees with the Seventeenth Shard. I imagine Demoux can possibly atium compound, making him immortal. No Seeker could do that. -
Spiritual gravitational bonds bugged me too for a while, but it's canon. The way I think about it, investiture probably is the power for all the fundamental forces in the Cosmere. We know that spiritual energy eventually re-coalesces (Well of Ascension) so maybe like is attracted to like. Smaller objects have less spiritual energy, and so are less attracted to other objects. Can you point me too your post about where you divided investiture? I have trouble figuring out what you mean when you use the terms primary and secondary, so this would help me understand what you're saying.

Theory on why Vin avioded Hoid *Minor spoilers for WoK*
Windrunner replied to Nesh's topic in Cosmere Discussion
We think you can, we know this much for sure. There may or may not be another quote about general investitures but I can't find it. Basically Bronze detects ripples of spiritual energy (investiture) in the Cosmere. You can detect Shards with it because they're comprised of that same energy. With some specialized training I imagine it's possible. I wonder if Hoid was Lightweaving... But anyway they would probably be able to detect any investiture. Breath would probably make pulses, as would Stormlight being invested. I imagine with enough training you could probably even detect what surges are being manipulated. I imagine Elantrians would pulse constantly with the investiture from the Dor. It would just be extremely difficult. Vin has a bronze spike so she is stronger then regular, it wouldn't surprise me if she was subtly picking up on his magic. I wonder if Slivers always pulse as well. -
Indeed there is. Here is the image we are talking about, the chart for the the Orders of Knights Radiant and their respective Surges. Do you know how to read the table? Every large circle is an Ideal mixed with an Essence, every smaller one a Surge. The ones attached to the blue symbol in the top right are gravity and pressure, together the three make the Order of Windrunners. There is a near mirror table in the back here which many believe to be the Orders of Voidbinding, although this isn't confirmed it seems likely. If you want to see all the images the link is here. The only ones missing are the Arches that begin the chapters. I imagine with whatever type of book you have, (paperback or e-reader) you should be able to see them fairly well.

Oooh nice catch, I bet this will become significant. I just love that chart! Interesting thing I just noticed. Jezrien is connected to to his daughter Shallash, so the pairings aren't couples (not that I think that's what you were saying) I wonder what connection is besides male and female, and why certain Heralds fell where. Probably what attributes they best exhibited. If anyone's wondering why I believe Shallash to be Jezrien's daughter, it's from an epigraph. (This is not something I caught, but someone else) The vandal we have seen is almost certainly Shallash, gouging out the eyes of a sculpture of herself. We know that Jezrien is both a king, and leader of the Windrunners, thus it seems that she is his daughter. One interesting thing to note is that, Shallash's order is involved in creativity. The man who has a vision of her is a singer, an artist. I wonder if that makes him more receptive. I wish we had more details on those who have visions. It doesn't happen every time right? Maybe only to those on the path to being a Radiant.

Windrunner replied to Nesh's topic in Cosmere Discussion
My bad, it's not in the annotations it's from an interview. Clicking on that link will bring you to the Interview database. If you haven't already, you should check it out. It's got every Brandon interview we can get our hands on. It also has Robert Jordan quotes, because it is a joint thing with Theoryland. If you just want the main page you can click here. Plan for a lot of time. Also, welcome to the forums! -
Theory on why Vin avioded Hoid *Minor spoilers for WoK*
Windrunner replied to Nesh's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Wow, this is definitely something that I've never considered before, and to my knowledge, no one else here has either. It makes a lot of sense. My only hesitation is that in the Annotations it says that something about Hoid spooked her, which always implied to me that she sensed something alien about him. I guess Ruin could have been increasing her paranoia, just like he did in making her want to find the atium. Whether you end up being right or wrong, kudos for a truly original idea! -
Well if it does steal everything at once, you could simply split the spike. You would less then 1/16th strength of other mistborn though. (Is mistborn capitalized? I don't think so.) I don't think the Well would help with this. He would be blind to all metals, as a holder of Preservation's power, unable to identify any in particular. If Ruin couldn't differentiate the metal comprised of his own power from the others, I doubt Rashek could have picked out one regular metal from all the rest. Also he might not even be able to create the metal he needs. It appears those using the Well's power are much more rigidly held to the Shard's intent. Evidence for this is that Rashek was already in Preservation mode with mere minutes at the Well, while Vin had no problem defying Preservation's intent to kill Ruin after hours holding Preservation. So Preservation is not creation, Rashek wouldn't have been able to just make metal appear. Even Sazed mentions how every object is half Ruin, half Preservation on Scadrial. He would need to get Ruin to work with him to create any chromium, and whatever it's alloyed with.
-
Written in metal, not stored in a coppermind. Shards appear to be blind to the focus of their power, so they couldn't see what it says. Copperminds have power that actually appears to be stored in the cognitive realm. Since Ruin and Preservation both power Feruchemy equally well, as it is a balance magic, Ruin has no problem messing with that cognitive charge.

The origin of Shardplate and Shardblade
Windrunner replied to Telcontar's topic in Stormlight Archive
Well in my opinion, it seems that the Plate and Blade are inherently tied to Surgebinding, not some separate gift from Honor. I can't back that up with anything whatsoever, other then a gut feeling. However, I don't think Honor would be okay with this "handing out" Plate and Blade to people. That's not Honor, that's bribery. It's what parents do to control a spoiled child. "If you behave now, I'll give you this shiny new toy". I just can't see Honor standing for this, it goes against his intent in my opinion. Also once these people, who are only acting good for the weapons, actually got a hold of them, what would keep them from disobeying? Nohadon cannot stop them, especially not if his ranks of Surgebinders are all like this. Also, this persona of people who only obey for these weapons, doesn't jive with the Reacreance, where these same Orders were willing to give up their weapons for, what is presumably, the greater good. These are totally different attitudes. -
Here you go I doubt that the Lord Ruler forgot anything over time. If there was one thing I would remember for sure it would be the proportions of the metals to be used. There's really not all that much information for him to forget. Like eight alloy formulas (requiring only two metals) and some Hemalurgic spike locations. One thing to consider is that most of these metals wouldn't be known to these people. Chromium is a good example. How do you find a metal when it has no name, and hasn't even been discovered? He would know properties and physical appearance of that metal, but he can't send followers out looking for it. They'll surely know that any metal TLR is interested in is probably involved with the Metallic Arts. And he obviously isn't going mining himself. Also as I mentioned above, it's extremely likely that the Lord Ruler has insufficient technology to get a hold of the required metals. I just don't think there's any reason for Ruin to have manipulated anything when TLR had no access to the metals.

This is what Brandon has to say about overlap between the powers and names of his characters and others.

Progress on Mistborn Movie, plus other things
Windrunner commented on Zas678's article in Brandon and Book News
Am I the only one who watched it and went, "Scadrial has no moon!"? In all seriousness I loved it, it conveyed the feeling I want from the movie very well. When those guys had that weird trail thing my mind went atium, even though I'd pictured it differently it still looked cool. I realize this isn't an offical trailer, but a mish-mash, but hopefully the real end product turns out that cool. I think the movie is in good hands! -
The Ideals and Oaths are one and the same. I think Ideals are what the book actually says but it doesn't really matter. I personally don't follow the Parshendi are reborn humans theory. I haven't been able to find a reason that Gavilar would be more effective at stopping the Everstorm as a Parshendi Shardbearer then a king of the most powerful nation in the world. It doesn't mean this theory is wrong, just that I find it unlikely, no offense to anyone who agrees with it.
-
Indeed both the spike type and position determine how much the receiver is warped. I imagine if you used the iron spikes in other locations on a person they wouldn't become koloss but something else. I do think that human spikes twist people more then Allomantic and Feruchemical ones.
-
I actually am pretty sure that there can no longer be atium and malatium mistings anymore, now that Sazed has restored Allomancy to it's original form. It seems that no one would be able to burn bendalloy and cadmium. So exactly 1/16 would be able to burn each metal, although no one could burn bendalloy and cadmium. Whether or not mistborn would have been abe to burn atium and malatium is still up for debate. About the atium, if you remember Kelsier mentions when he gets back to Luthadel that he needs more atium so he goes to Keep Venture. All of it went into the kandra fee. He could have accumulated quite a hoard prior to the events of the book and then spent it all on OreSeur. Also, we have no idea what the typical rate of pay for kandra is. It could be possible that 6 or 7 beads was a huge amount to pay in a single contract. After all the Trust wasn't that massive, and the kandra had been accumulating the atium there for centuries.

That's true. I've heard you guys did some pretty tough trivia in the past so I guess it wouldn't be that hard to do. How feasible are these things, and do you think there'd be community interest?
