Welcome Liryve! Nice to have you here. I would consider reading Elantris as well if I were you. It's not a huge thing, but there are full book spoilers all over the General Theories and Elantris sections. I personally hate knowing the ends of books beforehand so I thought I would mention it. A lot of the big theories here have examples from all the books, so a knowledge of them all is useful. That being said it's not irreplaceable, you can probably pick up whatever you don't understand from somewhere around here. I hope you enjoy it here

The Shaod does indeed have genetic component. It will not take Fjordish or Jindoeese. However it is fine with taking Teos and some of the Duladelish (I just made that up and it sounds awesome) because they are both related to Arelenes. Teos are the same as Arelish, but they must be inside the area for the "Elantris Affect" to take place, and only some Duladelish people can be taken. I imagine they have to have a certain amount of Aonic sDNA. As far as I know, no one has posted a theory about the Skaze possessing the Dakhor, so feel free. I would be cautious about using the term possessed by a Splinter though. People possess Splinters, and are still completely under their own control (although the Splinter's intnet may influence them). As far as we understand it Splinters are just a part of a Shard's power that has become separate from the whole. How they obtain personalities and cognitive aspects like Seons, and presumably the Skaze as well, is still unknown.

Does the Cosmere Universe open up for a sci-fi setting?
Windrunner replied to oGGe's topic in Cosmere Discussion
Someone must have left the gate open again. We're going to have to install a padlock or a firewall or something. -
I posted this in the comments section of the article, but people may have skimmed over it, because it was a part of my three comments in a row as I found more information. Here's a quote from their Facebook page. The website also has the PC symbol now along the bottom! Is there any reason I should consider getting it for PC rather then Xbox 360? A lot of people seem really excited about a PC release and I was just wondering what the benefits are.

Hey just a random question. For all those people who aren't staff there are these yellow circles similar to coins underneath the member title. What do they represent? Is their number tied to post count?

I would like to announce that today, I finally managed to snare a stuffed animal with a claw machine! That was right up there next to flying on my life of impossible things. Surely this 50 cent stuffed dog makes up for all the money I've poured into those machines?

I meant the second one, surely it should have suffered from the loss of power like all the other attributes? I think someone once told me that it was because knowledge is cognitive, but I've never seen Brandon say that before.

I understand what you mean about Mistborn being centered in one city, although I rather enjoyed the change of pace. I love big epic books, but in my opinion it was nice to read such a concise story that didn't leave my trying to remember all these separate places. I think if you go the opposite direction and have to show too much of the world, you sometimes end up on sort of a grand tour, rather then in the important places. Another reason Brandon wrote the books as he did was because he wanted the Mistborn books to be plot based, instead of setting. Have you got around to Mistborn 2 and 3 yet? If not I think you'll enjoy 3 more, you have travel scenes as well as two major new locations, Urteau and Fadrex City, both of which have some unique characteristics. If you'd like expanded world information I'd suggest you check out the RPG. You can get the digital edition for only 15 dollars, and you get all sorts of cool world information, (Brandon had all the world information you seem to be missing, even if it didn't make the books) as well as a short story by Brandon entitled the Eleventh Metal, about Kelsier finding malatium. I must confess that I haven't purchased it myself yet, I plan on remedying that oversight soon.

I'm still having an issue with the quote. It's not Brandon's exact words, but I don't think Chaos would have worded it like that unless he was sure that's exactly what Brandon meant. It's not Elantris supplements the Shaod or Elantris makes it more powerful, it's the Shaod is an effect of Elantis, not that it is only partially responsible. I don't think the wording leaves any space for argument. I simply don't believe we can argue around something that clear. What does everyone else think?

I think I'll bow out graciously on this one, you've both convinced me that this doesn't make sense. I think I'll go back to my original belief that Feruchemy can't be divided into halves, and both powers are responsible for all parts of the power, both storing and tapping. To put this fully to bed I'll add the final nail to my own coffin. I just wish I understood why extra power has to be expended when you over-tap your metalminds. Perhaps this goes to powering the extra attributes? Like some of the power Sazed expends when he draws so much strength goes to his skin, so it won't tear? Or maybe not. Does anyone know why Sazed didn't lose information when he dumped all his knowledge from his copperminds into his head as he Ascended?

Allomancy is of Preservation, this is certain. Intent is only important in how the power are obtained, not what they do with the energy. Chaos has talked about this a lot, it was in the Principle of Intent I believe, and Brandon has specifically confirmed it. About Feruchemy: I think I do remember debating it with Goradel's Nephew. I still maintain my position. The way I see it, if Preservation gave Feruchemists power, why not all of it? Why have it decay when you draw too much? It would make more sense if you got it all back. Also having energy destroyed and then recreated seems odd. I personally believe it to be more elegant if power is never destroyed.

Nice one Chaos! I personally believed Odium left Scadrial alone because there was nothing for him to really do there for millenia. Ruin was imprisoned for what might as well have been forever, and Preservation was all but mindless. Scadrial had made itself the way he wanted it to be, there was no one there to challenge him there. Now that Sazed is there, who knows what odium will do. One one hand Sazed has two Shards, and Odium has only one. However Ruin and Preservation aren't full powered Shards. Ruin put himself into the creation of life on Scadrial, and Preservation did the same only more so. It's possible that Sazed may not be all that much stronger then Odium. I think that Odium hasn't done much of anything that would tie up his powers, or he has followed his intent so closely that power hasn't "been expended in a way he was hesitant to do". If Odium corrupts the creatures that other Shards have made, to become the Voidbringers, rather then making his own, he could still be near or at full power. Regardless, if Brandon ever writes a conflux book, Scadrial better be ready as well.

Ah I see now, thank you very much, I misread what they were saying. I still maintain that you wouldn't be able to break the ability to draw Aons from the rest of the Shaod. I think you would have always glowed, if more faintly.
-
That's how I always saw Feruchemy, with a foot in both camps. I remember not everyone agreed with me, which was okay, but I still believe that Preservation is what allows you to temporarily store attributes, and Ruin was what moved them to the time you tapped it so it could be Ruined, and it also lost some power because of his touch on it. There had to be a cost, in my opinion.

Do you have a quote on Brandon saying that Dominion doesn't have a magic system? I am fairly certain that the monks of Dakhor tap into his power. Devotion has Seons and AonDor after all, so it seems odd that Dominion would get the skaze but nothing else. My own personally theory about balance magic systems is that they occur when complementary Shards are on the same world.
-
That wouldn't work out though. You say that there was a weak Shaod that made the Elantrians glow and become stronger and live longer correct? And then they built Elantris which gave them power to make Aons? If the Elantrians couldn't draw functioning Aons they couldn't build Elantris because it is itself an Aon. I also don't think you can break the Shaod down like that into different traits like that. The way I see it, the glow and increased lifespan is an affect of being able to draw Aons, which they can do because of their constant connection to the Dor. That is why the glow, and live longer, the Dor is sustaining them, even as it sustained the Post-Reod Elantrians, who had no need to eat. Am I missing something? I only see two solutions, which both contradict what Brandon has said in some place. One is that Elantris has been there forever, constructed by Aona for the Elantrians, but I believe Brandon has said the Elantrians built it. I don't think I'm imagining things but I cannot find the quote, so I may be incorrect, and so this could be a possibility. The other is that the Elantrians built it themselves which cannot have happened if the Shaod is an affect of the city because there would then be no Elantrians who could make Aons. Does anyone see a way to reconcile these problems?

What is this Fos Ro Da? Is it painful? Only the best for my friend Justin I. If not I guess we could always spike him. He'd only be good for a human attribute though, no chance he's an Allomancer

It sounds reasonable enough, although I would like to mention, that at least in my case, Brandon isn't answering questions about the cosmere, but rather the writing process, about characterization and deciding when to change the plot and stuff like that. If you still want a word-by-word transcription of this, I would be perfectly willing to go back in my transcript and fix it. Also do you want the into, before any questions are asked?
-
Ah good point, I'll run through them again and replace the beginnings of sentences. Is it okay if I chop down the questions? It's a podcast so the guy, will go off on tangents about where he first found Brandon's works, and explaining exactly what this other site that Brandon gave an interview from does. It seems superfluous to me, but if you want it I'll go back and add it as well. And as Kurkistan said, it's okay to remove "ands" right? Sometimes Brandon just appears to be using them to string his thoughts together, and not because the sentences are supposed to be attached.

The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon
Windrunner replied to Chaos's topic in Cosmere Discussion
So, since we know that animals can receive Hemalurgic spikes (mistwraiths) the question becomes, can spikes be made from animals as well? -
So I am furious with Bethesda, the makers of Skyrim. I had an issue with the game and so I sent them this message: And this is what they sent me: Did they even read the e-mail? You think that if they're asking someone to plop down 60 bucks for the game they could attempt to give me a relevant solution, rather then suggesting one I'd already tried. Does anyone here have any advice for how I'd go about solving this problem? I have it on the Xbox 360 by the way.

I always believed that the only purpose of Elantris was to enhance the power of AonDor but this contradicts it. This makes me wonder if the city existed even before the original (Pre-Aonic) people lived there. Maybe there never were any Pre-Aonic people. But then again I might remember Brandon saying that Aona helped the Elantrians build the city. I'm beginning to think that Brandon may have changed his mind on the canon of how Elantris came to be.

Yeah, and also the Skaze influence politics greatly which would be difficult to do from a monastery. Also, as far as we know, the Seons, which appear to be the Skaze's opposites have no similar role in the creation of Elantrians. If only people who had a Seon bound to them could become Elantrians, then I would believe the Skaze are involved on the other side. I just think there should be some similarities between the two magics.

Welcome again Bunyod! It's good to have some international posters in the forums. What did you get your degree in? Anyway you had some really excellent questions in the Stormlight thread! Wow Joe, I think you just made me cry a little bit, haha. 2030 is so far away. Did you factor in the interim period between 1-5 and 6-10 plot arcs? Brandon wants to write the Mistborn 2 Trilogy there, since there is a small gap in time between those two arcs. So that's three more years at least.

You mention the Parshendi not attacking the Alethi army. Something odd is going on there, which we've noticed around the forums. The Parshendi are often more honorable then the Alethi. They only bring only as many armies as the Alethi do, they are easier on injured soldiers, and they never follow retreating Alethi troops to harass them back to the war camps. Szeth is a special case. I get the sense that he doesn't agree with his punishment, but is too honorable to disobey. Szeth cannot do anything stupid or allow himself to be killed. I believe whatever oath he has sworn requires him to do his utmost that he survive, and not be fool-hardy. For example he certainly he could have attacked the King of Jah Keved without his Shardblade, but doing so would increase his likelihood of dying, which contradicts his oath, so he is obligated to use his blade. That is why he begs for an equal opponent, so he can lose a fair fight. My only question having to do with Szeth is about his oathstone. Is there a magical bond that compels Szeth to follow the commands of it's holder, or is he just honor bound to do so? Also welcome to the forums! Once you read the other cosmere books you'll be hooked for life, if you're not already.
