  1. Can Splintered Shards reform?
  2. I'll agree that Rao probably does that, but Raoden might not know, and it'll probably require some crazy undiscovered modifiers if even the Original Elantrians didn't have those tattoos. It's also not so easy to just teach everyone, I think Brandon has said that it often requires years of study, and some still won't get it.
  3. Thanks for the info Velnica welcome to the forums! I hope you'll like it here, we're going nuts with this Sel information right now. No one considered that it could be set on a cosmere world we already knew.
  4. Will this be available after the fact to transcribe? Because if not, someone better record it, or be an extremely fast typist. I'll write down facts as I hear them just in case, but they won't be verbatim, I'm just not that fast.
  5. Yes that's what I meant, sorry if I wasn't clear. Elantrians could probably win any defensive war, and help protect Teod at the same time. However, can you imagine them trying to attack head on? Against the armies of what have to be 5 or 6 separate nations while at reduced strength? They would be slaughtered so fast it wouldn't even be funny. Some of their powers could be useful, like disguises attached to clothes, but other battle powers would be so much weaker. The way I see it, the Elantrians wouldn't have beat the Dakhor monks in a fair fight. The Dakhor were attacked in a massive sneak attack. If you had the Elantrians and Dakhor march across a field toward each other, their would be no contest. Few are as skilled as Raoden without years of practice. Also their transportation is of limited use, they can attack but not retreat, they would be too weak to return to safety, so they would be caught without fortifications when the enemies surprise wore off. Not saying it couldn't be done, just that I think it would be extremely difficult and require a substantial amount of Elantrians at Raoden's skill level or better.
  6. Well I don't think we need to add a whole new Shard, although I guess it's a possibility. If there was a 3rd Shard, it wasn't listed in Brandon's list way back when. I guess that could mean that no one interacted with it, but it just seems unlikely. A planet with three Shards would qualify as a major player in my opinion, worth more then a trilogy. Also, I think Teod and Arelon can exist on there own just fine, at least for now. But Elantrians have absolutely no attack ability at this time, leaving Elantris would make them ineffective against the Fjordell army. I want allies that could possibly disband the Fjordell Empire and free it's satellite nations.
  7. Hmm, what issues do you have with iTunes, Chaos and lyssie? I personally like it a lot. The only thing that I don't care for is the method of creating playlists. It would be easier if you could just drag songs to the sidebar instead of right-clicking and going through the menus. As for Windows or Mac, I really don't have a preference. I use Windows but mainly because that's what my parents use. I have next to no Mac experience beyond playing on one at an Apple store, so I don't have strong feelings either way.
  8. Well as far as I can tell, Brandon has never referred to those being affected by Ruin as something other then crazy or insane. I also can find no mention of him ever using the words "mentally unstable" in the Database, as well as in HoA or its annotations. Do you have a reference that I've missed where Brandon suggests otherwise? This is what HoA says when it talks about Ruin's affect on the insane, emphasis mine.
  9. I have discovered that I am terrible at potions. I barely got the potion heated up before time ran out. I also have no idea how to turn the page to see the second half of the formula. Also did anyone read about Petunia and Vernon's romance and their double date with James and Lily? I was just cracking up because it all felt so familiar. I also read McGonagall's back story. It was just amazing. I never realized that she had ever been married, let alone all the pain she went through. It makes me respect her way more. She's one of the strongest characters in the whole book. It also explains her ardent defense of Muggles and half-bloods. I can't wait for the Chamber of Secrets to be out.
  10. Hmm, I think that's the one I was thinking about. I still believe that Zane had to have been a little crazy to begin with in order for Ruin to be able to influence him.
  11. Hi GoldBug, welcome to 17th Shard! You should make a topic in the Introduce Yourself thread so everyone can say hi. In response to your question, I have no idea. Spiritual DNA (or sDNA as we sometimes refer to it) doesn't appear to work the same way that regular DNA does. So it's possible I guess, we just need more information on the Spiritweb and how it interacts with the rest of the body. It's an excellent question, you should also stick it in The Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon topic. It's a little outdated right now, but it's a really good space for this. I'm sure everyone will be here before long to speculate away. (It's what we do best )
  12. It's on Sel! That's just amazing. Now we have a grand total of 4 magic systems there. This points heavily to every ethnicity having a magic system. I wonder if the people from Hrovell, Svorden etc. are still Fjordish or if they're their own race entirely. I'm thinking they are all Fjordish. This also makes me wonder if AonDor and Dakhor aren't both made from a combination of the Shards. This whole world just got a lot bigger. I wonder if this is the same time period as Elantris. Wyrm is not going to be happy when he finds another whole continent of unbelievers. If it's around Elantris's time, Arelon and Teod could get some new allies to resist Fjorden's control and possibly break their empire.
  13. Eh, he was a little insane to begin with. Ruin got him to spike himself after all. I think he was referring to the voice of God not meaning he was insane. I think there's another quote where Brandon comes right out and says that Zane's mad. I'll try to find it if I can.
  14. Hi Holly, it's great to have you here! I hope you'll enjoy it here, and it sounds like you'll fit right in. We have plenty gamers, and aspiring writers, as well as fantasy fans of course. Mystery is where I started reading fantasy too. It's nice to meet you, I'll see you around!
  15. Hi J.H.McMullen! Welcome to 17th Shard, and sorry that this welcome was so late. I'm glad your brain surgery went well, from the sound of what you went through, you experienced my worst nightmares. I hope you like it here!
  16. Hi Kerry Jewel! I hope you'll have fun here with all of us.
  17. Hi Feeki! Welcome to the forums. That's so cool that you were knighted by Brandon, it's a really unique experience. Glad to hear that you still have your ears. I hope you'll enjoy it here, we spike love new members. (We're actually pretty nice here, but if someone offers you a waffle, chew it but don't swallow! )

    Hi

I just thought I'd say welcome again, in the proper topic this time. I hope you're liking it here, and say again that I really did like your alternate perspective on why Vin was spooked by Hoid. I'd never been able to think up any reason at all.
  19. Hey Scoop, welcome to 17th Shard! You've got more self-control then I do, I actually had to go out and buy a copy of Alloy of Law at the store because the one I'd ordered over the internet was taking too long. So I now own two copies, but it was totally worth it. I'm also learning acoustic guitar, although I'm taking lessons instead. I also love the quote by the way, Princess Bride was a great movie. I hope you'll enjoy it here as much as I do!
  20. Nice! Thanks for telling us this. It actually does lend some credibility to some of my other theories, where I discuss the possibility of Odium being involved like in The War Against Odium. Thanks!
  21. I was like your friend. I read TWoK and when I found out all the other books were related I was annoyed because I was so sure that they weren't going to be as good. I read them anyway and discovered how very wrong I could be. I agree, you should try tipping him off to the cosmere, that's what convinced me to read Brandon's other works. Also was the style of humor Lightsong's? Because he's so hilarious; one of my favorites by far. His line about the tarachin balls using circular logic cracks me up every time! Also, I would like to announce that I used the change from cerrobend to bendalloy in Mistborn as a way to explain copyrights to my little sister. Oh Mistborn is there any problem you can't solve?
  22. I'm PatronusNimbus20706! I am super excited for this, Harry Potter was my first real fantasy book. I spent hours finding all the bonus content on J.K. Rowling's site, and I've been keeping an eye on Pottermore for a while now. Hopefully it'll be cool.
  23. Exactly! That is my thinking as well CrazyRioter. If the spike isn't attached to the spiritual energy in your body, it's nothing different then any other piece of metal. Oh and actually Zane's spike goes through his sternum, the point just sticks out of his back, like the ends of Inquisitor spikes go out the back of their heads. Here's the original quote. Hope that helps!
  24. I tend to think that a spike has to hit a bind point in order to function correctly. Ruin controlled Marsh to make sure that the spike hit the right spot, so he couldn't have just stuck it in anywhere. If it misses the point I don't think it would have done anything other then kill him. In my opinion, the spike seems to be grafted onto the Spiritweb, in order to make that connection. If it misses the Spiritweb, Preservation's power probably wouldn't be able to keep you alive, and Ruin wouldn't have a path into your Spiritweb. Unless you were saying that he just put it into a non-Allomantic bind point? In which case I think that could be probable.
  25. I would like to announce that on this night, and around this time a century ago, the RMS Titanic sank in the Atlantic Ocean. Hopefully we learned a bit about arrogance from that disaster and won't have to suffer through another such tragedy that could have been adverted. May all those lost souls rest in peace.
