  6. That feeling when you sit down and write a page or more of solid worldbuilding is nice.

Today, for me, that was religion. Got some nice religious conflict in my little collection of worlds that I'm stewing up...and some books of scripture. Which I'm proud of. They leave scriptures out of a lot of fantasy religions. Name one sci-fi or fantasy world besides Dune that has a Bible equivalent.

    Spoiler

After I write that I realize there are a lot more...Mistborn Era 2 has the Words of Founding and the like...but still.

Now I just need to figure out magic. Or if there should be magic. Because the way I've been building this it would make a lot of sense narratively if there wasn't.

...This is a rant without context from the Bookwyrm. Don't mind me.

Mistborn Era II's is still off screen mostly, so I don't blame you.

Tell us about your creations, unless you are trying to keep it a secret.

  9. ...Okay. I hope by "in person" you mean you saw it yourself and not that it was still inside a person.
  10. We should organize a Dune RP around the time Part 2 comes out.

that would be a lot of fun

      THE SPICE MUST FLOW!!!!

  11. You know you don't RP enough when they all go too fast and your poor little characters are left in the dust with unresolved trauma and nothing to do while the world rapidly evolves around them.
  12. You won for 46! I'm guessing now that I will win for less than that. If I'm right, my loss is tempered by the fact that I won in my little guessing match. If I'm wrong, it means I won for longer. So either way I'm happy. EDIT: And then I get ninja'd and the whole thing becomes obsolete so I'm no longer happy. Wow. 46 minute gap ninja. Might be a new record.
  13. ...I came here out of curiosity and found a Dune discussion that was happening without me...
  14. I'm attempting to read Empire of Silence in the Sun Eater series. Only like two chapters in. It's kind of slow right now, so I'm hoping it picks up. (I'm assuming it will; that's how these kinds of books go.) I'm also reading The Road for a class assignment. It's really interesting so far.
  15. .... But where's the plot? The intricate worldbuilding? The nuances of character and the conflicts between them and others and the world?
  16. Who wants to help me figure out a magic system?!

    It'll be fun!

    I hope!

And then maybe I can add some nuance to this cliche interplanetary fantasy empire I've constructed!

I can donate a magic system.

Or you can run an idea by me and I'll give my thoughts. I suck at narrative, but love everything else.

The setting is a group of planets spread out across a star cluster with nine stars. (This is medieval era fantasy, they travel using magic portals.) In ancient times, each star was inhabited by a god. The magic system is closely tied to the religion of the cluster (which I haven't worked out much yet either) and involves taking energy from the suns and using them for magic.

That's the basic gist. I know where I want the magic to come from, but I have no idea what the effects should be. Do I want it to be like Allomancy, where each star gives a specific ability, so people from entirely different planets have entirely different magics? (This would be cool in interplanetary conflicts, which will happen in the stories I'm thinking of.) Is there a baseline, things everyone gets to do? Are magic users only able to get energy from the sun they were born under?

Things like that. Any ideas are welcome.

  18. Everyone (non personified) came to lunch. The food was quickly eaten and riots began in the streets as those without food unleashed their rage. Somehow the sandwich escaped uneaten during the chaos.

    Spoiler

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY RPS NOW

    Spoiler

Astute followers of my SUs will remember a large chunk of writing I put in a spoiler box detailing the tragedy of a man who fell to corruption after obtaining a powerful artifact that made him immortal.

His tale spans thousands of years and a whole star cluster.

Problem is, now I have a multi-millennia epic within a larger connected universe that also has an intricate history.

    So yeah.

I've been trying to figure out some worldbuilding for it. Basically all I've come up with is "their magic is boring and comes from the sun(s)." But that's okay. I'll figure it out eventually.

I want to write a story somewhere in this scattering of worlds during this time period, but I have like, five separate eras with unique settings and situations that I could write stories in and I don't know which one to do.

I might rant about this more later and ask for suggestions.

Oh yeah, I've finally seen Jurassic Park now.

    Spoiler

....Actually I don't need to rant about this part to you guys. You deal with your own problems anyway. And it's not really that bad.

    Spoiler

    Guys, be nice to people.

I started a Sociology class today with a teacher I know very well and only three other students that I range from kinda tangentially knowing to not knowing at all.

This class is sociology, so we're going to be talking a lot about "spicy" topics, I suppose you could say, questioning assumptions about society and wondering why we act the way we do.

I got called out for my religion within the first portion of this class.

Not in a bad way. He respectfully asked my permission, then proceeded to tell the other students about how I was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (he had to correct himself, but he got the name), but also remarked on how he'd noticed how I'd spent time trying to understand and respect other perspectives differing from my own. He noted that even with that attempt at understanding, that didn't make me any less devout to my faith, which is 100% true.

I could tell the respect he had that I'd been willing to listen to other perspectives. The school I go to has many people with plenty of views that generally differ from my own, considering my religious upbringing. But the people there still respect my faith and belief, even though they disagree with it, because I give them the same thing.

I know a lot of you are members of the same church, so this applies to you. But no matter what group you're from, what beliefs you have, that doesn't justify you treating those who disagree with you as garbage. Respect their views, and come to understand them, no matter how strongly you hold to your own. It stands out. People notice. When you respect their worldview, they'll respect yours, even if you disagree with them.

    So yeah. Be nice.

Uh, I think that's all for now.

Maybe I should try to get active in the forums again.

Respect others and they will respect you.

It’s a subject I could go on for hours on end ranting about. But that would make me a hypocrite for not respecting them, even if they will not respect me.

      so there’s that.
