Why Nahel Bonds result in 2 Surges
Argent replied to ArborealEtymologist's topic in Cosmere Discussion
If we use the standard letters-to-numbers substitution cipher, i.e. A = 1, B = 2, etc., we see that NAHEL (N(14), A(1), H(8), E(5), L(12)) adds up to 40, which - once you divide by the holy number 10, and then take the square root of (to represent symmetry), yields 2. The number of Surges granted by the Nahel bond. Illuminati confirmed. It's okay, it's okay, put the torches and pitchforks down, I'll see myself out...- 12 replies

Why did Galivar have no statue of Shalash?
Argent replied to Farnsworth's topic in Stormlight Archive
It's very very likely that it is because Shalash broke it -
Where Has Brandon Been? (A tour stop compilation)
Argent replied to ccstat's topic in General Brandon Discussion
It's pretty neat, I like it. Might be better suited in the Events forum though, not sure... -
2017-03-24/25: Germany - Leipzig Book Fair [Minor Cosmere Spoilers]
Argent replied to Pattern's topic in Events and Signings
The term "end-negative" applies to magic systems, and Nightblood is not one. The question, as I see it, is not entirely invalid, but I suspect if Brandon were to answer, he would use of his response to clarify what end-negative means. I do like your Roshar questions a lot though. -
Brandon has actually spoken about this a few times. The short version of it is that early in his career he was worried about people guessing things ahead of time (which is why Hoid tends to use pseudonyms in Brandon's first few published books), but eventually decided that it was okay if they - we - did that. Those of us who dig deep in the Cosmere lose a little bit of enjoyment occasionally when the books confirm something we've already speculated on for years (where somebody who had never suspected such a thing would be surprised and more delighted), but I think we gain a different type of appreciation for some of the Cosmere details - and Brandon gets that. So he doesn't try to hide information from us (no more than the usual, that is), and he doesn't change his world so our speculations turn out to be wrong (or right). I think it works out for the best for everyone

How are they going to find you if they can't call you by name though, @She Who Cannot Be Named? -

I would use the term "Perpendicularity" here. We know (?) that animals can be spiked, so strictly speaking - yes. Do we know that at least one of them is a dragon? We know Frost is, but he is also not a Vessel. And I think we got RAFO'd on whether all Vessels were humans. I think you misspelled "Can I please have a RAFO" here. -
Wyndle does say that his people - the Ring, presumably - tried to take some precautions when they decided to send him to Lift, so in that regard he is special. Neither Syl nor Pattern had this kind of preparation, their choices were more spontaneous, and - my understanding goes - more in line with how most spren choose their Knights.

I applaud your dedication, but it's a little difficult to read We, as a community, need to perfect this art a little bit. Learn the ways of Master Kwaan.

Jasnah and the Cosmere *WoR spoilers*
Argent replied to CosmereQuestioner's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I've seen this particular idea a few times in the past - that the bandolier suggests Jasnah has been to a place where bandoliers exist, and we know that Scadrial is in the right era for that (bandoliers are traditionally used for carrying cartridges, for gunpowder-based firearms), therefore Jasnah must've gotten it from there. I find some merit in the theory, but it's not a sure one. -
Motherf-- I am with @Kanrei on this one. WoBs will now be recorded in steel.

I'll second @BlackYeti's word of caution - the author is just somebody who is both fan and a Tor employee, and the entire article is an opinion piece. It's full of assumptions, personal interpretations, and some statements I know for a fact are wrong.

I am very interested in whether metalsight (i.e. the blue lines Allomancers see when they burn steel/iron) reveal Spiritual Connection. And if they don't, I am curious about how they work. -

I am almost entirely certain that we know this to be the case. He's been dropping hints about this for months now. Pretty much any worldhopper from Scadrial, I think. -
The original Elsecallers would often bring other people into Shadesmar, it's in one of the excerpts from (the in-world) Words of Radiance. Jasnah also obviously doesn't emerge from there naked at the end of the book either, so she can carry stuff in and out as well. But it would be cool if she used Ivory as a portal - I don't think it works like that, but it would be cool.

I am almost completely sure that the stormspren are referred to as voidspren, so the term "Voidform" isn't entirely unlikely. But, generally speaking, your replies are in line with what I believe.
-
If I recall correctly he cuts 10-15% in the final revision, consistently.
-
I am pretty sure this is either impossible or very very difficult.
-
It's one of the reasons. I really thought Odium didn't know how to properly Spinter Shards the first time around...
-
I can think of two main factors we can count as evidence that the Radiant spren did, indeed, abandon the Listeners. The only Listener forms we've seen or know of that come with active control over Surges are the voidforms, the forms of power, the forms that come from the Unmade. The Listener Song of Spren outright says both that the spren betrayed the Listeners and that they chose to give their (the spren's) Surges to men.

Laidlaw's Rule: Cosmere Edition
Argent replied to Mason Wheeler's topic in General Brandon Discussion
If I may refer you to my thread on the same topic -
I realize now that calling Surge manipulation Surgebinding and using that as an umbrella term for everything from the greatshells' crush prevention thing and the Radiants' Surgebinding may have been a bad idea... Maybe it's better to think of Surgebinding as the specific thing humans can do, even if I consider all manifestations of Surge control to come from the same source (a symbiotic bond with a spren). So, to answer you, I am not saying that Listeners bonded with the greater spren would've gained access to the Surges, not in the same way Surgebinders do. I think they would've transformed into something similar to the forms of power granted by the voidspren, but with powers closer to what Surgebinders can do (though still unique). I think the Listeners are somewhat unique in how they manipulate the Surges.

You go in the corner and think about what you have done! On topic, I like it. I don't think this explanation is inevitable as you suggest it might be - Rayse could've gone after Aona and Skai because he was afraid they might form an alliance against him (because of pre-Shattering friendship, or because of compatibility of mandates, or something else entirely), or because of another personal grudge. As to why he didn't just Splinter them like he did Ambition and Honor after them, I actually think I recall a WoB about how he didn't yet know how to Splinter properly. Rayse always knew he didn't want to just kill the other Vessels because that left the Shard available for pickup. But I don't think he knew how to Splitner their minds this early in his "career", so he did the next best thing - he made them extremely dangerous to even approach, let alone separate. By the time he got to Ambition, he must've figured it out. But I like the idea. Very nicely thematic.
