  1. Welcome to the Shard! I hope you enjoy the place! Like the lord of scars, eh? Welcome to the party! The drinks are over by Kel, the snacks are right next to Thaidakar, Mraize is right there leading that politics discussion. Codenames are Stupid is showing Moonlight how to do a card trick.
  2. time to go back to basics and actually figure out what kind of progresses I want to have in the trilogy I'm trying to write and what sort of plot they're going to have in each one. Apparently waving my hand and saying "They will be doing something that leads into this important thing during this part of the book" is not enough.

  3. precisely. The amount of times I've had to tell people "No, it's not flirting, it's people talking normally."
  4. Yeah, but then I remember they're basically the same as us, just older and with the authority to lead.
  5. Storms, I just came up with an awesome cover and book title.

The cover is a cute skeleton dog among some books and the title is: "Murder is Man's Best Friend."

And then the dog's name is Murder.

  6. What do you want to do? If you do want to be a writer, then say keep going. Keep pursuing writing even though it might not feel like you can. Think of why you want to do it and your good experiences with writing. however, if writing is not the path for your life, don’t force it to be. You might have something else you need to do. But I do recommend you keep writing anyways at least in the side. It’s a healthy way to express ideas and learn how to communicate better with people.
  7. YES Kill your inner critic, resurrect them for drafting then crucify them when you're right about to finish your book.
  8. My friend. The only way to be a better writer is to write. You don't have to write an original masterpiece on the first go like Patrick Rothfuss. Tbh, I think it's better that you don't because then you might wind up like Pat and not be able to write more for fear of disappointing people who loved the first book. Just write. Don't think to please anyone else, just write what you want to write. And if you don't have something you want to write, necessarily, I would just write things every now and then, scenes, bits of fragments. Listen to videos and think about stories, not necessarily your own, just stories. Other's books, a movie you saw the other day, a show you want to continue watching tonight. Just think about stories, think about how they work together, let yourself imagine. It takes a while for this to actually do anything, it took awhile for me. I'm just barely starting to get where I can actually have more ideas and be a writer fully again. Just keep trying. You'll get there! Brandon wrote 13 novels before being published and a lot of them sucked or were unoriginal, though the occasional one was epic, like Aether of Night and Elantris, they were not all good at all. Just keep working on it, tinkering on ideas. Take a random idea you have, a funny thought, and apply a story to it. Write a few lines of it. Yo udon't have to do a full on thing, just write as much as possible. And if you do that enough for different ideas that you have now and then while still trying to write what you want to write, while still trying to get the point where you're a good writer, then you are farther along the road than many who say the words "I want to be a writer."
  9. Crap, the future is scary.

Building a plan for the future is absolutely terrifying...

Realizing that I'm not going to be able to live off my writing, actually accepting that knowledge, is terrifying. I now truly know that things are gonna suck if I don't have at least one back up. Especially one where I can still write on the side. For the first time, I genuinely thinking "What if I become a seminary teacher at some point?" or "Maybe I can become a podcaster" (I know, outlandish) and even "What if I become a social media manager for Wendy's and get to roast people?

That being said, there's some new online programs that allow artists to put an extra layer of invisible pixels over digital copies of art. The invisible pixels make it so the AI machine can't recognize it, so it doesn't get stolen. I believe the largest one so far is called Glaze. Some other programs add invisible pixels that actually screw up the outcome of AI if your image is taken, but I'm not sure what that one is called. Hopefully these programs can become commonplace enough that those who want to protected can be.

Oh my chasms I need to try this out then.

I can understand having fun with it, since real commissions can be pricey (though they are that way for a reason).

I agree. it might seem kinda backwards that I occasionally use it seeing as I’m an artist myself, but I mostly use it to visualize what I’m trying to draw if I’m having trouble. I don’t copy it by any means, just use them as references I guess when I can’t find a good one that already exists. I never post AI made things and say “I drew this”, though. It’s like taking pieces of cake from other bakers and making those pieces into a cake and then saying “look at this cake I baked!”

Yeah, if there's a way to use it respectfully, that'd be it. Specific references can be hard to find.

It's real fun to ask chatgpt about plagiarism and get it to admit committing criminal acts.

Copilot actually cites sources, which is a step in the right direction so woo windows.

  10. Now, I might just be under reacting to it, but is Wayne sexist? I know a lot of people say he is, and the stuff with what's her face, cool lesbian gun lady, fit with that, but... those interactions happen like three or four times at most in four Mistborn books. Maybe I just need stuff like Sokka outright saying that Suki couldn't be a warrior to actually get it. I really do want to know what's going on here and why he seems sexist to people. (And maybe if what things make him seem sexist to other people and doesn't to me. That would be super enlightening and I really want to know before I publish my books if I'm unintentionally sexist sometimes lol.) Remember... Wayne comic books in era 3.
  11. His name shall be discord and they will love him for it. I feel like it would be fun, but would over all make it more pulpy a story.
  12. Have you seen Dune? Timothee Chalamet would be insanely perfect, especially if they age him up in the right ways where he's still as lithe as he is in everything else. If they do him once he's like a year or two older, it would be exactly perfect. He has range and could do it nicely. You can't hold an actor to the fact that he hasn't exactly played that sort of character yet (Though I will maintain that Paul is at least that bad.) I think it could be amazing. Now, to actually add something to the conversation, imagine Walker Schobell. Age him up to, say, twenty years old with darker hair that has straightened a little over time. He has a little sharper features and that same smile. Now imagine him with a book in his hands. Or, perhaps, a giant bloodied sword after he just killed a bunch of Kolloss and his old buddy. Elend Venture played by our boy Walker Schobell. I think he could be great if they waited long enough, which seems like there's going to be at least enough time for that.

  15. I'm reading Eldest for the first time and the thing I keep thinking is that Christopher Paolini must have read the Shadow Rising, thought: "Hey, that would be a fun book to write." Then wrote his version of it.

I'm just saying Roran is basically the Wish version of Perrin.

Nynaeve is a queen in the "slay queen" sense but not the "epic medieval queen" sense.

I love Egwene with all my soul and I aspire to be her but I also didn't like her until like...book 7? 8? Sometime in there. So...I can understand. I suppose.

I thought she was amazing in book two and most of three and four. The scene with Mat and the girls in the dungeon makes me angry even though I know it’s super realistic and Mat was being rude (so I am told. I didnt see it, I just saw him trying to soften the situation with his brand of humor while doing what they asked, being right there when they needed him after they tried to manipulate him, their friend. BUT YOU KNOW.)

But yes, I love Egwayne too, especially where I saw her arc going. I loved her growth in the story and how she started to be learning things more. If only she’d made more of an impression on Nynaeve.

    4. Edema Rue

      Edema Rue

Yeah...her arc is pretty much the only reason I kept reading through the slog. It was incredible. But a lot of people keep saying they hated it, so...maybe it was just me.

  16. Dragonwatch is the continuation of Fablehaven, but with more dragons and cool stuff. Basically, Fablehaven is a series where Seth and Kendra, a brother and sister duo, wind up at their Grandfather's mansion on a big estate while their parents are in India or something. They wind up finding out that Fablehaven, the property, is really a refuge for magical creatures and that their grandpa is the caretaker for them. Wacky hijinks occur and they suddenly find themselves saving the world every few books.
  17. Darkness strode forward. He raised a flaming sword and pointed it at Platypus. "Do you surrender your feelings of hatred? Retreat! for balance is the key to salvation." "Good," Shadow said, "My plan is to save TLT from Darkness. What Darkness is doing will destroy many. I know what he is trying to do and I know what could happen if he does it... He will destroy reality." Zap Darkness moved sluggishly, feeling the repeat motions growing on him. Days before, he had noticed time moving slower and slower for him. Each hour in here, he reckoned, was a few seconds out there. A few seconds. It ate at him, but it was the price he needed to pay. He had to stay here, and to fight his way out. Who would never let his cause die. And if it did, he would fall with it. "I will avenge her..." Zap

  21. Where'd you get your profile picture from?
  22. Ah, yes, learning how to interact with leaders and set up times for things- I fear when I have to set my own doctor’s appointments.

I don't fear getting married, I don't fear having a life, I don't fear death, I don't fear old age, but I fear setting my own doctor's appointments on the phone. Or even by text! I am the absolute worst and setting specific times and dates for specific things when it's just me and another person doing it when I have not done the same exact thing with the same person at least a few times.

Setting dates for things is terrifying. Mostly because talking to professionals on phones is scary.

  23. Darkness felt the power tingling at his fingertips, ready to be channeled, yet every time he reached for it, it was stopped by some unseen force. Balance. If he survived, he would kill that creature if he survived it all. He swore it in his head. Micheal extended a new weapon towards Darkness, a glaive, "Ready to die, Brighton?" Darkness stood from his knees, wiping the dribbling purple blood from his pale chin, "Never." He flicked the dagger out from his sleeve, falling into a battle position, "I will kill you and free myself of this infernal place!" He charged at Micheal, dancing from side to side. Micheal swung at him with the glaive masterfully, yet merely because someone had masterful movements did not make them a master. Good thing Darkness was not merely masterful. He gripped the glaive's staff right under the blade, keeping it from hitting his ear. He attempted to rip it from Micheal's grasp, but a flash of lightning hit him in the chest. He blacked out, reforming where he'd started yet again. "Ready to die, Darkness?" Micheal asked, holding two javelins. "When you kill me, I will be ready," Darkness said, saluting with the dagger. "But that day is not today." Lightning struck him again and it started once more. "Ready to-" "FIGHT ME!" Darkness' words ripped out of his lungs as he rushed at Micheal, barely letting him finish the sentence before he slammed his knife into Micheal's throat. The blood gurgled out of his mouth just as the lightning hit Darkness once more. "Darkness, are you ready to-" The dagger hit Micheal in the eye. Zap Darkness held his dagger forward at Micheal, "I SAID FIGHT ME, YOU COWARD!" Micheal walked forward, "Ready to die?" "Not today, you coward," Darkness dodged as Micheal attacked. Micheal fought bravely this time, making it far. Darkness fought back, grinning. However, as Darkness' confidence grew, he blacked out. zap "Ready to die?" Slash Zap "Ready to die, you light blinded fool?" Micheal asked once more, wielding a long glowing sword. "I will kill you." "Not today," Darkness said, his eyes glowing with a fierce fire of determination, "You will never defeat me!" "Never is a long time, Brighton," the voice whispered to Darkness. Darkness gritted his teeth, "Get me out of this infernal place, voice!" This time, however, the voice seemed to shut up. Zap Zap Zap Each time Darkness' determination grew greater and greater. He killed Micheal almost every time now before he even began to move his weapons. Over and over again he battled and slaughtered. Each and every time he was back at the beginning. "FREE ME FROM THIS DESTRUCTION!" "When will you learn?" Darkness slashed Micheal in the chest, kicking him to the side. Zap "When will you learn?" Darkness ripped Micheal's sword out of his grasp, bloodying his fingers, and stabbed Micheal with the dagger and the sword. Zap "When will you learn?" Micheal fell to the ground, dagger in his eye. Zap "When will you decide it is enough?" "When I free them." Darkness stood, watching as Micheal said the words again. "Ready to die?" "What is freedom, Darkness? Is it the ability to chose? certainly. But what else is it?" Darkness punched Micheal in the face, throwing him at the wall, his back snapping instantly. Zap "Balance, Darkness, balance. You, one who would give them freedom, do you have balance? True balance?" "Balance," Darkness spat as Micheal said the words again, "I will bring balance. There is no balance in TLT." "And thus your failings are revealed, old friend." "My only failings are not acting sooner," Darkness replied, killing Micheal. Zap. "Your failings are many, friend. Each and every one centered around your methods." "My methods are the only ways that work." "I know." "You would rather TLT stagnated, perished, died while I sat by, not doing a thing?" Darkness slayed Micheal once more. Zap. "I do not. Good things often come from bad sources." "Hypocrite," Darkness scoffed, tackling Micheal to the wall. "Good does not excuse the evil, only highlights it." Zap. "Then I am tainted for the betterment of the universe," Darkness said with a smile despite his mind starting to grow fatigued. His immortal body could not be fatigued, yet his mind remembered a time when it was not immortal. "Fighting is the only way to fix it. Thus says the prophesy she made." "Is it? Is it truly?" "From your voice, I can tell you know the answer," Darkness said meekly, grabbing Micheal's hand and putting it in front of Micheal's own eye just in time for the gun to fire. Zap. "Perhaps I do." "I know you are Balance, but who are you truly?" Darkness asked, halfway into the rhetorical. "I am one who wants to see you achieve your true balance." "There can be no balance in this world, not until I fix that sin that started it all," Darkness said. "I will avenge my daughter." "Good luck." Zap.
