  1. Well, the trailer for Dune Part Two came out, so now I'm rereading the book. It's a lot easier now than it was back in early 2020.
  2. I'm pretty sure that's the case, yeah.
  3. Saw the trailer this afternoon. It looks really good, and I'm quite excited to see how it goes! The costumes look lovely, I like the call back to the first movie's music, and the cinematography looks gorgeous as well. What do y'all think?
  4. Viva La Vida, baby! Something about this song and the melody is scratching an itch in my brain, and making me start to think about the next story I want to tell.
  5. Welcome to the Shard! What do you like to write about?
  6. I gave The Justice of Kings a shot, and I'm kinda on the fence. Objectively, I think it's written quite well. Personally, I don't really care for it. But I feel like I should read it anyway, because again, it's objectively good. I reread Howling Dark, and wow, but I caught more this go through. It makes me really excited to reread book three, Demon In White. Next up is mostly just misc. books from the library. I am halfway through the sequel to Justice of Kings, The Tyranny of Faith, but I might drop it.
  7. Gosh, is it really almost May already? Wow. Well, I went back and looked at last year's thread, and I've got to say: I've come a long way since then. I still have pretty significant lows, but I have a support system now, at least for what ended up being determined as anxiety. There's still other things that I'm not sure about/am researching, but even just the research has helped a lot. So my two cents will be this, then: It does get better. It can be difficult, and talking to people is scary, and there will be setbacks. But it gets better. And for those of y'all who are in the spot I was in last year: If you don't have a name for what's going on, that's okay. If it's hurting you, then that's a reason to get help.
  8. Guys

    Guys I'm kinda disappointed

My top sci-fi series, The Sun Eater, had a Kickstarter for a special edition of the first book.  It went live yesterday.  I found out today.  There were only 500 physical copies because the original publisher would only allow that many.  They all sold out in the first hour.

And that cover art is really pretty, folks.  I'm a sucker for pretty cover art.

But this is also really cool, because I like seeing this guy succeed, he's pretty darn talented and it's always cool to see someone's work do well.

Anyway, it's a pretty neat series.  Y'all should check it out if you like epic sci-fi tragedies

I don't really but I can summon a friend who does. And I might give it a try since you so highly recommend it.

  9. For years, since the beginning of high school, really, I have really struggled with finishing stories. I tend to get ten or thirty or fifty pages in, and end up abandoning it. Well. I finally managed to finish a story. And there's a lot that needs to change, but I think that this one's actually decent. But the big thing is: I finished it. I wrote 'the end'. It makes me really happy
  10. Been building a new playlist - All the melancholy songs I like. So stuff like Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, 7 Years by Lukas Graham, Somewhere Only We Know by Keane. Just songs that give me that 'we can't go back to how it was when we were kids and life was simple' feeling.
  11. Quick association check:

When you hear 'Sic semper tyrannis', what is the first thing you think of?  Spoiler box your answers so there's no cross-contamination please.

uhhh i think its something roman? 'semper fi" is the marine thing, and tyrannis sounds like tyrant so its something to do with military + leadership

maybe "down with the king" or something similar

i've definitely heard the phrase before but i got no idea what it is specifically

  12. So, my current story writing method is to hand write, and then type what ensues, right?  It helps me pace things better.

Here's the thing.  Sometimes, I don't want to type.  Sometimes, I get in the groove, I understand the vibe, the words fairly spill out, I've got such a good grasp on the characters.  And then, all of a sudden, I have twenty pages I need to type.

That would all be well and good, I can put on some music and spend a couple hours laying on the floor typing.

Except I type really aggressively.  Extremely so.  So I'm honestly surprised it took so long to find out that the floor is thin enough that my dad had to ask me to stop because he could hear it down below.

In other news, I think this is the first thing I've written where I went to check the Geneva Conventions just to see if I was making my character as bad as I mean for him to be.

That could be a funny video game character, actually - The Librarian.  Individual of indeterminate age who says cryptic/strange things occasionally.  Your only warning of their approach is the sound of furiously clacking keys growing louder

  13. I've started listening to The Oh Hellos, and it turns out it's really good music for writing my current project. Hello My Old Heart hits hard, too.
  14. Last night I finished A Memory of Light, which means that I have read through the entirety of the Wheel Of Time twice. That's twenty-eight books. Wow. It's still far from my favorite series. But that ending really is beautiful. And I defintitely caught more the second time through. I don't think it would be surprising if I caught more the third time, but that is a ways off, I'm rather burnt out on Randland right now. Next, I might reread the five published Sun Eater books, since I just acquired Howling Dark and Demon in White.
  15. I'm up to Towers of Midnight in the Wheel of Time reread, and going pretty slowly. I'm so close now... I did finish Ashes of Man, and. Oh boy. It's not often that I read a book once and know that I want to buy it for my personal collection. To be fair, I already have book one, but this really encouraged me to track down the others. I also read two books by the author Amanda Dykes, those being All The Lost Places and Yours Is The Night. These were both really good, especially since I'm really in the mood for happy endings right now.
  16. Ashes of Man is finally out! Ahh, I'm so excited, The Sun Eater is my favorite ongoing sci-fi series!
  17. Junkyard by the Zac Brown Band (Specifically the version with Angie Aparo) and Blind Guardian.
  18. Not really, but also yes. TPBM is wearing a bandanna.
  19. I'm working my way steadily through Knife of Dreams. Wheel of Time is definitely a lot more enjoyable to read when you already have an idea of what's happening.
  20. If I had a nickel for every time the same person asked me if I'm Amish, I would have two nickels.  Which isn't a lot, but you would have thought he would learn after the first time.

I think it's hilarious (he just does not know what to make of me), but slightly weird all the same.

  21. I'm currently steadily moving through Shards of Earth by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and liking it quite a bit more than most of the epic sci-fi I pick up. I'm not sure if it's the writing style, or just how the world is treated, but I'm having an easier time clicking with it.
  22. I'm sorry. (Sending you hugs) I know how some of those things feel, and they suck.
  23. Only in the very vaguest sense, but I have liked what I have listened to in that genre.
  24. Two truths and a lie:  When I was cleaning out my desk drawers today, I found three 3-D printed models of my upper teeth, a box of rocks, and a prism from Miami, Florida.

Which one do you think is the lie?
